Grandpa’s Gift – A Children’s Story

Peggy and Paul loved Grandpa, and he loved them very much. Every Saturday Mom would take them to Grandpa’s for a puppet show. He had a little white bunny rabbit puppet named Blue Ears.
Blue Ears had friends too, Malcolm The Tiger, Oscar The Gopher, and George the Giraffe. Grandpa would say so many funny things, and each one had their own funny voice to go with them. Paul and Peggy loved going to Grandpas, they loved Blue Ears, and they loved the puppet shows.
One Saturday though, they didn’t go to Grandpas, he had to go out of town on business. Paul and Peggy were sad most of the day, they loved Grandpa. Grandpa was sad too, but he smiled at the surprise he would bring back.
The next Saturday they were all excited, it was time to go to Grandpa’s! They loved the puppet show that Saturday even more. When it was over, Grandpa told them he had a surprise for them both by the front door.
Paul and Peggy almost ran over each other getting to them. They found two matching little suitcases, their eyes sparkled when they opened them. In each one was a Blue Ears puppet, a Malcolm Tiger, Oscar Gopher, and George the Giraffe. Each little suitcase also had its own cardboard puppet stand too.
They couldn’t wait to do their own puppet shows when they got home. Both did their best version of Grandpa’s puppet shows, with their own silly voices and funny things he had said. It was fun, but it wasn’t as fun as when Grandpa did it. Paul and Peggy didn’t understand, they loved Grandpa’s present.
Mommy sat down with them and explained while Daddy held them. “Honey the reason that it’s more fun when Grandpa does them is because he loves you so much. He puts everything he has in those shows for you all. It takes him all week to write them. The real present isn’t the puppets or even the puppet show, it’s the love Grandpa shares with you both.”
Paul and Peggy understood, and it made them love Grandpa even more. The next Saturday, and from then on, they spent less time watching Blue Ears, and more time watching Grandpa. They loved it even more, because they now understood the gift that Grandpa gave them every week.
