As I wrote in a previous posting the school half-term is upon me already. We just seem to have got Christmas out the way and, bang, the little ones are once again at home on leave. You could call it an advantage to be able to work from home or you could see it as a disadvantage when the children are snapping at your ankles to keep them occupied. I always have plans to complete interviews etc during this period, but this soon goes out the window. You just can't help but get involved with them. On Monday they were at the cinema. On Tuesday the whole family went swimming and on Wednesday I took them over to Lowestoft to see one of their nannies were they got lots of tweets like sweets, ice-cream, etc.

I did manage to get a days worth of work out of the week for my two books FRENZY a Daniel Jones Story and the new sequel Daniel Jones Doom. I was interviewed by a web-site for readers and authors called Awesomegang.com and below is the end result. So take a few minutes out to read and enjoy.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERATell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Mark King and I’m a free spirit, lover of life, family, friendships, good food, and travel. I live in Norwich in the county of Norfolk in the U.K. It’s one of Britain’s most historic cities and a hub for present day literature. I’m the author of the internationally acclaimed book Frenzy a Daniel Jones Story and the sequel Daniel Jones Doom. I’m also the writer of the world-wide blog at www.always-hanging-around.blogspot.com. I’m now starting on the third book in the Daniel Jones series. What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Daniel Jones DOOM was released in December 2014 and is the sequel to FRENZY a Daniel Jones Story. I was inspired to first write Frenzy a Daniel Jones Story when my father-in-law passed away after a short battle with cancer. It came out of the blue and was totally unexpected. It was then I knew you have to follow your dreams now and not wait for some distant point in the future. So I resigned from a secure job during the worst financial crises in living memory to start on the manuscript to Frenzy and two years later it was published.Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I try to write as if it was a normal working week starting on Monday morning then finishing by Friday afternoon. The weekend I try keep for family time. Sometimes though you wake up in the middle of the night and your mind is buzzing. You try to get back to sleep, but you can see a picture in your head and it keeps going around, and around, and then there’s only one thing you can do! That’s to get up and start writing. This can be the most creative time to write as there are no distractions, no outside noise, now commotion from daily family life, no television or phones. It’s peaceful and your imagination can flow freely. What authors, or books have influenced you?
George Orwell was a massive influence as well as Ken Follett and Dan Brown. Animal Farm and 1984 are two books I have read, and then read again, and no doubt will read again. I like the way he tells a greater story within the stories. I love the fast pace of the story lines of Dan Brown’s writing and the detail of Ken Follett. Three different types of writing that are blended together in both FRENZY a Daniel Jones Story and Daniel Jones DOOM. The final book that had an influence on my life was The Secret by Byrne Rhonda. You either get it or you don’t. I did. What are you working on now?
I’m now working on the third book in the Daniel Jones series which I have titled Revenge. I haven’t decided on the final title, but will wait to see how the manuscript unfolds before I decide on the final wording. But there will be Frenzy, Doom, Revenge and then maybe more! What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
In the past there were limited media outlets, but now we have multi-media which might sound good, but only means you have to cover many different platforms and sites. There is such a great choice it’s very hard to get heard above all the noise, but sites like Awesomegang are a great way to get exposure.Do you have any advice for new authors?
The best advice I can give is to never give up once you have started. It’s hard, very hard to make it as an author and if you give up too easily then you will struggle to get the story out of your head. And you can’t do that then you will never get into print. What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Never feel sorry for yourself. If you don’t believe in yourself how do you expect others to do so.What are you reading now?
I’m reading, The Girl Who Played with Fire. To be truthful I have found it a bit of a slog and after getting halfway through I put it down, and now I’m struggling to pick it up again. Stieg Larsson’s first book in the series gripped me a lot more. What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m the author of the world-wide blog www.always-hanging-around.blogspot.com which I post on nearly every week and I’m starting on Revenge the third book. I’m also promoting both Frenzy a Daniel Jones Story and Daniel Jones Doom so between the three I’m kept quite busy. The next thing for me is seeing my three books on the big screen and is something different reviewers have said they would like to see.If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?

Everyone will experience colds, bugs or flu during the year if you have a young family. No matter how hard you try to keep yourself from catching such things, and suffering the miserable effects they bring, you still end up with a sore nose, throat or muscles. You can teach your children to wash their hands, and to be as conscious as possible about germs, but you can’t count on other parents being so careful with their little ones. This means you are guaranteed children will come home from school soon after the holidays with the sniffles and then you know worse is on the way. I think teachers must have an immune system that is extra resilient because if they didn’t they would be constantly on the sick list.

So far since the return to school after the Christmas holiday the family haven’t suffered too much, until now that is! The dear wife has been feeling very ruff with a stinker of a cold, and as I write this article my throat has the dry feeling that can sometimes foretell that worse is to come. By the time you read this article I may well be suffering too.

With any bug you never know how bad it’s going to be. It can be just a few days of feeling under the weather, or it could be something that seems to takes weeks to get over. And you are normally powerless to do anything to improve your situation once you feel sick other than to stock up on cough medication, and mediated hot drinks, and hope for the best.In the end if all we have to put up with is the odd cold and nothing more, I count it as a blessing because many people in the world have to go through a lot more dreadful things in their lives.

It can be easy to feel sorry for yourself when your under the weather, or if things aren't going your way. It's times like this when you can blame others. You feel grouchy, down in the dumps and you want to cheer yourself up by pushing your pain onto someone else or something else. The best way to lift the spirit is not to blame, but to open your eyes to those around you that are helping you in your time of need. To the person who makes you a soothing hot medicated drink while you're curled up on the sofa. The person who comes round to check you are o.k, or the person who is there to listen to you while you get off your chest the daily tribulations of life.

Open your eyes, see the truth and be grateful. life will then become more positive for you.

Regards

Mark

I’m also the writer behind the successful worldwide blog Always hanging around. My varied working life has taken me from an auctioneer to a Court bailiff and then finally to an area operations manager, plus other positions in-between. It has given me a rich tapestry of experiences that has helped feed my imagination, which is now used in my creative work as a successfully published author. One of the big spurs for my writing career was the death of my father-in-law. I’ve started writing stories over the years, but never got passed the second chapter, as the daily tribulations of life requiring my attention took priority. So, my scribbles would end up in a drawer waiting for the day when I had time to finish them.  It was after this heart breaking event that I realized you can never guarantee tomorrow will arrive. I made the decision to resign from my secure job during the biggest world recession in living memory to concentrate purely on writing. Two years later, I published my first book, FRENZY: A Daniel Jones Story.I’m now working on the third book in the series, which at the moment I have titled REVENGE, although I’m still toiling with various different options. I’m going to see how the book pans out as I write the manuscript, before I decide on the final title. The best advice I can give is to be prepared for disappointment. It starts from the beginning and will carry on throughout your career. It’s doesn’t matter what field your artistic talent lies. Don’t be surprised when you receive your first rejection. Even when you have finally get published, be prepared for strangers and reviewers to slate off not only your book, but you yourself, even though you have never met this person.Never give up. Keep going, especially if you have made the commitment and have the belief in yourself. The final bit of advice is to be prepared to listen to what people have to say. If you do, you have a good chance of making it. You have to take a positive look at every failure. See each one as a learning experience and think how you would work differently next time.Mark King standingMark Kingmarkkingtheauthor@gmail.com

Sometime ago I wrote a piece on Always-hanging-around in support for a local Norwich lady who during a very dangerous period in world history showed exceptional humility and bravery that her actions deserved to be honoured. Her name was Elsie Tilney and there were many who thought she should be remembered at Yad Vashem the Righteous Among the Nations. I am pleased to say this is now going to happened as reported in the local press. The article below brings into true prospective how comfortable modern life is for most of us in the Western world and what little is expected of us in return for this pleasure.

Norwich’s unsung heroine of the Holocaust has finally gained international recognition for her selfless actions to protect Jewish people during the Second World War – and her home city has been urged to help celebrate it.EmailPrintThe story of Elsie TilneyElsie Maude Tilney was born in Norwich in 1893. In 1919 she applied to the North Africa Mission (NAM) and was appointed jointly with the Mildmay Mission to the Jews. She spent several spells in northern Africa until the second world war loomed. In 1939, Elsie travelled to Vienna, in Austria, and brought a one-year-old Jewish girl called Ruth Buchholz back to Paris on July 23. Ruth later became the mother of Philippe Sands QC, whose family research helped uncover Elsie’s exploits.Elsie continued working in Paris until it fell under German occupation in June 1940.Along with hundreds of other foreign nationals, she was placed in an internment camp at Vittel – described as one of the more “hospitable” camps, as it was located in requisitioned hotels. One of the most extraordinary accounts of Elsie’s selfless bravery involves Sashe Krawec, a Polish soldier who was imprisoned in the Warsaw Ghetto, but was transferred to Vittel along with 400 other Jews on the basis of his South American passport, probably bought on the black market. Elsie became his English teacher. When orders were issued for all those people to be taken to Auschwitz for extermination, Sashe mysteriously disappeared – until Vittel was liberated by French forces in 1944.A letter included in a NAM newsletter tells of some of Elsie’s actions. It says: “She hid for a period of 16 weeks a young Jew condemned to be sent to an annihilation camp in Poland.”A second letter says: “When the Germans abandoned the camp in September, she again put herself in great personal danger by hiding the camp records and papers, for she had been camp archivist.”Elsie stayed at Vittel until the Germans abandoned it in September 1944, and then remained to help with the repatriation of about 200 Jewish people. After the war, Elsie travelled to Lisbon, and worked with the Swiss Mission in South Africa. She eventually moved to Florida in the USA, where she lived close to her brother, Frederick. She died there in 1974.The extraordinary story of Elsie Tilney had never been told until it was uncovered two years ago by London barrister Prof Philippe Sands, when he began researching his family history. He discovered that his mother Ruth Buchholz had been rescued from annexed Austria as a one-year-old in 1939 and taken to Paris by the devout Surrey Chapel missionary, who was subsequently held for four years at an internment camp in Vittel, in occupied France. There, she used her position as camp archivist to hide camp records and papers which could have exposed Jewish internees to Nazi suspicion, and the horrors of the concentration camps. One Polish soldier named Sashe Krawec, destined for Auschwitz, was hidden in Elsie’s bathroom for 16 weeks – until Vittel was liberated by French forces in 1944.Now, her humble heroism has been formally honoured as Righteous Among the Nations by the official Holocaust remembrance authority at Yad Vashem in Israel – one of more than 25,000 people recognised for risking their lives to save Jews during the darkest days of the war, but only the 21st British recipient of the honour. In a London ceremony on Wednesday, a medal is due to be presented by Israel’s ambassador to Elsie’s closest living relative, 84-year-old Joseph Schultz, who lives at the Great Hospital in Norwich’s Bishopgate. And on February 1, the people of the city have been invited to join a special commemorative event and service at Surrey Chapel, Elsie’s spiritual home.Dr Derek Haylock, a retired elder at Surrey Chapel who is organising the event, said: “We knew of Elsie Tilney as one of our missionaries, but she was not much more than a name in our archives. The story of her extraordinary exploits in France during the Second World War was something she seemed to have kept to herself.“We’re very excited that one of our former church members is being honoured as Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem, one of only 21 such award to British people. This award is a great honour for our church, for Elsie’s surviving relatives and for the city of Norwich.”Mr Schultz said: “Elsie was my mother’s first cousin, but I can’t really remember her saying anything about her. I think people were more modest in those days, they didn’t wave flags about to say what they had done.“Elsie is an unsung local heroine, and she is very similar in many ways to Edith Cavell. When you look back at the facts, how people lived daily under the threat of Nazism and in those conditions during the war, you cannot believe how people in those conditions could risk their lives to save other people.“I am very proud to be associated with her, even at this distance. I think locally many people will be very, very surprised to learn of this story, but they can be very, very pleased about it too.”The commemorative event at Surrey Chapel on Botolph Street in Norwich will start at 4.30pm on Sunday February 1, with a presentation by Philippe Sands QC, followed by a themed evening service from 6.15pm–7pm.

The recent events in Paris, with people killing people while trying to use faith to justify their actions, has been in the world wide media to the point that has sent the western world into a frenzy. I look on life with a positive eye, and when I see terrible things happen between the human the race it just goes to prove to me that being negative only produces negative results.
The terrorists actions in Paris were a terrible event, but one that can be added to many such things that have occurred throughout human history. The word assassin  comes from biblical times when the people in power had to look over their shoulders in-case they were stabbed in the back by some unknown person. Just look at Julies Cesar. The assassin's have now become the terrorists.
What I find even more frightening is not what happened, but the response of our rulers. For centuries the ordinary folk on the street have been fighting the people at the top to gain some freedoms; let in the last thirty years these basic rights of man-kind have been eroded in the name of democracy. Every time there's an outrage we are expected to give even more power to the top people so they can supposedly make us safe!
For the last twenty years the British security service have been requesting unlimited powers to monitor the most basic freedom of all, and that's the basic right to privacy. Without privacy of the individual you have no freedom. The Nazis in the 1930 understood this, and that's why they made all Jews wear the Star of David. The Jew was no longer a private citizen, but somebody that could be identified, and thus abused.
What I find to be a double standard is that every time someone causes an act of terror we find out later on that they were known to the powers to be in the first place, but they never took any actions! It does make me think that maybe they let these people carry out these terrible deeds so our masters can then use this to gain more control over us, the individual, and thus regained what they see as their historical right to rule without challenge.
The most dangerous sentence in the English language is. "If you have done nothing wrong you have nothing to fear." Why is this so dangerous? Because it turns on its head the simplest requirement for all freedom. You are Innocent until proven guilt. This sentence states that you are guilty until you prove you are  innocent.
It's such a small change in the British way of life 99% of the population will never notice, and thus will agree to it by default by their failure to act against it.
Don't let the terrorists win by giving more power to the people at the top to control our lives.
Regards
Mark.

The children went back to school after the Christmas break on the 5thof January and although it was a hectic, but enjoyable, holiday I was glad to get back to some normality. I sat down enjoying the piece and quite with a hot mug of tea answering questions to my latest interview for my new book, Daniel Jones Doom, on my laptop when the wife set down some old letters next to me.
She had decided it was time to go through them and recycle some. Most were letters from various groups and the school with dates and information on them. One she did keep had all the school holiday terms for 2015 and when she left the room to answer the phone I took a quick peek at it. I looked and then took a double take at the dates. The next holiday term was only six weeks away! Six weeks, that’s it! As a parent the school holidays seem to come around too quickly, but as a child I remembered it seemed the other way around, and took ages to arrive.

We had one week’s grace before all the groups the children attend started and King’s taxi service had to resume which felt like a small luxury, but one we knew would not last for long. As they grow older more things spike their interest and the more things they like to try. This only means more groups they potentially want to attend, and so the more time us parents have to sacrifice to full fill these new desires. On the one hand it’s great for any child’s development, but on the other it can be hard work, not just with your time, but also financially, but it’s something well worth making the sacrifice for.
Regards
Mark.

The decorations are down and packed away for another year. The family lounge now looks bare and with the grey, and cold, wintry weather blustering outside it's not the time to look back over 2014 with negative eyes, but to look forward to 2015 with positive eyes.

The children are back to school so now for a short period during the day there is enough piece and quite to concentrate on the all the hard work involved that all authors do in self promoting their works, and with the release of Daniel Jones Doom at the end of December their is plenty of work for me to do.

Christmas was hectic, but enjoyable, although when I climbed the stepladders on a cold Sunday morning to take down the outside fairy lights I was glad it was all over. There are only so many nuts, chocolate, sweats and cheese you can eat before the thought of a hard workout in the gym becomes ever more appealing by the minute.

So here we are. 2015 has arrived. You can never tell what the future holds although history can give a sneaky preview. All I know for certain is that the up and coming year will have high moments and also low moments. I just pray there will be more highs than lows.

What I also wish for is that all my readers at Always-hanging-around will be with me for the following year as we travel through life together. Also that you all enjoy reading Daniel Jones Doom, and that it brings you as much pleasure at it brought me in writing the manuscript and bringing this story into being, and the characters alive.

I know one other thing and that's life won't be dull in the King household during the next year.

So I wish you, your family and your friends all the best for 2015, and may your highs be many and your lows be few.

Regards

Mark

I am proud to announce the release of my new book Daniel Jones Doom the long awaited sequel to frenzy a Daniel Jones story. As you can see by the header above I have inserted the links to the book for my readers not just in the U.K but In America and other countries too. The book is available in digital format and at a special introduction price. Daniel Jones Doom is also available in paper back and a limited edition hard back version should be released soon. To co-inside with the release the cover price for the Kindle version of Frenzy a Daniel Jones story has also been reduced to match.
The New Year will soon be here and by February 2015 it will be four years since that day when I emailed my resignation to the company operations director explaining my reasons for giving them my notice. It was still the height of the financial crises and the world was still on a tight rope. The world order could have collapsed into a frenzy of mayhem (and it may still!), but I was determined to become a author, and now four years later I have two books published that are available for sale in over twenty countries.
By the time the date arrives where I can celebrate my fourth anniversary as an author I plan to have started writing my next book. It will be the third in the Daniel Jones series, and I plan to keep to the fast pace unique style of writing that my readers have come to love. New characters will arrive and like the previous two books a beloved character will go. No one character is safe from the author’s cut, even Daniel Jones himself, because I don’t want the books to become predictable.
The last four years have been full of lows and highs, but to be truthful there have been more lows than highs. In fact for any author that’s new it’s a constant struggle to get established. For every high I would say there are ten low points; a constant stream of rejections, no shows and failures. I’m still not there and have a long way to go, but as Sir Winston Churchill once said. ‘Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is perhaps, the end of the beginning.’
So I still have a long way to go and probable that’s the best part of it because I still have plenty of dreams to follow, and hope, like one day seeing my books on the big screen, and according to some reviews for Frenzy this could be a good possibility one day. But until that day arrives another of Churchill’s quotes is in my head. ‘My rule of life prescribed an absolutely sacred rite smoking cigars and also drinking of alcohol, after and if need be during all meals and in the intervals between.’
So with this in mind I’m heading to my local pub the Fat Cat and Canary  at lunch time because my football team, Norwich City F.C are playing away at Derby County, and it’s live on the Television. So I don’t care what the health lobby say because if it’s good enough for the great man Churchill then it is good enough for me.
Regards

MarkP.s As this is the last post before Christmas I just want to wish you peace and joy during this festive season and to remember the true power of Love.

It's a hectic time of year for anyone with a young family as we hurtle through this festive season. Every single group seems to want to put on something special to celebrate Christmas, and with the school there seems to be something different every week that needs to be done because of some event they are putting on. From the Christmas fair, nativity plays, parties, there is always something we have to make for the children, or send them to school in some special clothing. When you add on all the after school clubs like Beavers, Guilds, football, athletics, music, it goes on and on, and so does the stress and expense for us parents.
Gifts for the stalls and prizes for the draws, cakes and costumes for the shows, and then there is the taxi service as you shuffle not only your own children, but others too whose parents can't do it because of work reasons, or they just can't get any child cover for their other children. By the end of Christmas it leaves us looking towards the New Year and hopefully a short break before the school term begins once again.
Schools in Norfolk close on the 19th and all the clubs my children attend stop as well as the wonderful volunteers who give their time for free get a well-deserved break. Then the real excitement begins as they both wait eagerly for the big day. My daughter may be too old now to truly believe in Father Christmas, although not that old she will totally dismiss it, but my son is still a firm believer in the power of Santa.
As the verger at the parish church the little ones still know the true meaning of Christmas as a time to celebrate the birth of baby Jesus, and that it's not just a time for self-interested consumerism. The local schools' naivety plays were held within the church building, and we will hopefully find time to visit one of the two Crib services on Christmas Eve. My daughter will be singing in the church carol service a week on Sunday with the whole family attending, and it's during moments like this that the real spirit of Christmas fills your soul with joy.
I think if you celebrate Christmas although you consider yourself a non-practising Christian, then you should try out just one of the many different types of services held over the festive period, because it just adds a little warmth within your heart during these cold nights and days.
Regards

Mark
