The tickets were purchased, the children were excited and the family was set for a day out at Carrow Road to watch Norwich City F.C play Middlesbrough F.C. Packets of sweets were at hand and they were wearing their Green and Yellow. The club were on an unbeaten run and there was a full house. If they could win they would go top of the league, and the omens were looking good. Norwich always upped their game against what would be called top opposition, so what could go wrong! The sun was out and the atmosphere was electric, but after ninety minutes of huffing and puffing everyone went home with a sense of dejection. Norwich lost one nil after an early goal, and once it went in you just had the feeling they weren’t going to win. Their luck seemed to have deserted them, with a referee and linesman who seemed to be seeing a totally different game to the twenty six thousand Norwich fans in the stadium.
The opposition players spent as much time as possible in wasting time by rolling about the pitch every time a Norwich player went near them, and it was not a good advert for professional sportsmanship. With parents trying so hard to install the right values into their young children professional football is not the best of role models.
The following week as other parents and I stood on the touch line for an under 7’s football tournament is was pleasing to see such effect by the little ones, but occasionally there was the odd incident that you knew they hadn’t learnt from the coaching staff, but from watching their hero’s on T.V. It’s a shame, but its life and as they grow up the more it will affect their behaviour.

But there were two things that happened which you won't ever see from professional footballers. The first was when one of the seven year old boys in the opposition team was substituted. He didn't want to leave the pitch, but wanted to play on. The team manager tried, and tried again, and then tried again, to get him to come off, but he just stayed on. The referee asked him nicely to leave the pitch and then asked again and again, but he still would not leave. In the end the manager went on the pitch after him, and the boy just ran off, chased by the manager all around the pitch. It was comical like the famous last scene in the Benny Hill television show when Benny Hill is being chased by a crowd. In the end the child ran off the pitch and across the other football pitches while his team manager chased after him.

The second event happened when another young boy was swapped with another player. He hadn't been off the pitch very long when the ball was kicked out of play, and ended up at this boys feet. In the excitement he had forgotten he had just been substituted, and with the ball he ran back onto the pitch and headed for goal with the manager shouting after him to come back off. He didn't hear. He was so caught up in the game he just carried on playing, even when the referee realized our team had one more play on the pitch then the other team, and stopped the game, this young lad carried on playing.

After the tournament as us parents walked back to our cars we couldn't help it. We all started to hum the Benny Hill tune which brought a smile to everyone's faces, well most people at least.

Regards

Mark

The Election

For my readers around the world you may not be aware, but in the U.K we are in the process that's leading up to a general election on May the 7th. Parliament has been dissolved so officially there is no one running the country for six weeks!

I think that's a good indication which shows who really controls things in the country because nothing has changed. In fact for a lot people employed by the state like health workers, teachers, the arm services, police etc things will be just that little bit more relaxed, and thus are running more smoothly. A bit like when you boss goes on holiday somewhere far away, and for two weeks of your working life you can enjoy your work. No more silly memos, or silly targets to worry about, or wasting time replying to silly emails, or demands for this information, or for that pointless task to be carried out.

Not much has grabbed me during the election campaign other than two things. The first is the amount of free air time the smaller parties are being given compared to what they used to get when only the Conservative and Labour were considered the natural parties of power. The smaller parties are being treating like equals even though one party has only one elected M.P (Member of Parliament) another has only two M.P's because they defected from the Conservative Party, and two of the political parties only true purpose is to ultimately see the break up, and thus destruction of the United Kingdom. Something which various Spanish Monarchs, Two Napoleons, The Kaiser, one Adolf Hitler and various terror groups from the I.R.A to ISSI have failed to do. If you including the three main political parties in Northern Ireland, with Sinn Fein as well, then only in Britain can you find the situation of having three parties who want to see the end of Great Britain as their ultimate goal. I doubt you can find this anywhere else in the world?

The other thing that has struck me is how scared all the parties are of telling the truth, especially when it comes to money. The country is sinking under one and half trillion pounds of official debt. If you add in the other one and half trillion pounds of hidden debt that was kept off the state books by the previous labour government, then there is no money spend. With all this hidden debt like unfunded state pensions, government guarantees for the banks, railways and all the P.F.I projects that need to be payed for I don't think anyone should be talking about taking on any more debt.

As the government is supposed to be by the people for the people then this means all that debt has to be payed by each tax paying individual. If you divide three trillion by the numbers of working people paying tax then we are all sinking into the shit very quickly, and its just about up to our nostrils.

Every party is promising to spend anything from an extra eight billion to fifteen billion on the National Health Service which is very quickly turning into a self feeding money monster that is out of control. That's fine if we had the money, but when who ever we owe that three trillion too comes calling for us to pay it back, the only thing the N.H.S will be able to offer if you fall ill will be a plaster.

Never mind I will be doing my bit for democracy on the day by not only voting, but also volunteering to carry out the vote counting on the Thursday night. I have to start at 9.30 in the evening and will work all the way through until the sun shines on Friday morning. I'm then in again at 1.30 on Friday afternoon to help count the votes for some of the local elections which will be taking place at the same time as the general election.

We might moan about all our politicians, but if you don't take part in the democratic process in one way or another then you can't moan about the bastards you get in power.

Regards

Mark.

The sun was out and spring was in the air. I had the urge to get out into the brightness while at the same time I had the urge to write. So I decided to get the garden umbrella out of its winter storage in the garage and to sit at the garden table with my laptop.

There was a chill in the wind so I had a light jacket on, but when the sun appeared you could feel the warmth on your face. If you closed your eyes you could image laying by the water's edge on a hot day enjoying the cool shade of the beach umbrella. Once the laptop was up and running I opened up Daniel Jones Revenge and read the first chapter. Once I was finished I thought about the second chapter, but my mind wasn't focused on the job. I kept thinking about the new story that I have in my head. Should I make a start on it? Bugger it, I did. I opened up a new page on Word, gave it a title and just started to type. The words came out of me like a steam train out of a tunnel and four hours later I had written ten pages.

For the following three or four days I got caught up with the day to day routine of family life so no further writing was completed. Then I decided to keep Thursday clear to carry on with my new story. I still haven't decided at present if to write two books at once; with the sequel to Daniel Jones Doom plus my new mystery adventure, or just concentrate on the one book.

I decided to go for an early morning run at my gym. Forty five minutes of being in my own world with my iPad shuffle to keep me company; while I was pounding away at the revolving rubber floor was just the perfect tonic to clear my mind. But! Yes there is always a, But. As I slowly increased speed and the sweat began to seep from my flesh something flashed into my mind.

When I wrote those ten pages it introduced the main character as a man. Then I thought, 'What if he became a she?' Should the lead person in my story be a women and not a man. Suddenly the whole outline of the story started to change and with all the possible different outcomes. My mind began to buzz. Then I started to wonder if I could write as a women. That might sound silly as I have the two female characters of both Mary and Gwendolyn in both Frenzy a Daniel Jones Story and Daniel Jones Doom. But this was different. Could I see the whole story through the eyes of a women? As a man could I understand life through the female form? The more I thought of it them more I believed he should become a she.

Well I've decided to give it a go. I'm going to rewrite the first ten pages again, but this time the lead character will be female, and then I will compare the two together, and see what happens. Because at the end of the day we are all different as individuals, but at the same time we all share the same basic desires and wants in life.

I think it will be interesting. So watch this space to find out my conclusions.

Regards

Mark

Di-monds

It's been a funny old week. Easter Sunday was a traditional affair with the family visiting the local parish church for the service followed by an Easter Egg hunt for the children afterwards. Then we headed over to the Mother-in-laws for a traditional British roast lamb lunch finished off with evening tea and hot cross buns.

With the children still on their school holidays it's been a frantic week of events which came to ahead on Friday. In the morning after a visit to the gym I headed into the city. I was asked to appear in a promotional video that was being filmed. A clever chap I know call Paul Rudd has invented a new board game called Di-monds. He has produced the prototype and an app and now is in the process of raising funds via crowd funding to get it into production.

The filming was a laugh. It tells the story of how Paul came up with the idea while out walking his Rabbit. Yes you read it correctly, a very large black rabbit called Geoffrey! When he got home he put his idea into practise by making a rough copy out of a card board box, and any bits or pieces he could find including a mint. While testing the new game with others in his local pub a chap who works at City College Norwich said he would make Paul a proper version of the game. He only wanted a bottle of vodka in return and the above pictures are the finished product.

later on some one else designed an app for the game and now the crowd funding is the next step. Once it starts I will post the link here and on my other media sites like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram etc and would ask that you support Paul in bringing Di-monds to production.

Geoffrey the rabbit makes an appearance, not the real one but an electronic one. In a way it could be another product in its own right? You never know! In years to come the newest rage to hit the toy shops could be Geoffrey the Rabbit and you could be seeing people walking abut the streets with rabbits in toe.

In two minds

Easter week is upon us. The children are off school so any thoughts of finding quite time to write goes out the window. In fact finding any time to yourself just disappears like the white blooms of the cherry tree after a gust of wind. But on Thursday I did just manage to find a couple of hours to myself at lunch time.  The children were at their grand-parents and I had the house to myself.

Now sometimes when you suddenly find yourself on you own all the things you planed to do at such a time seem to vanish from your mind. You could do this or do that and your head starts to spin until it's empty. This is what happened to me. I should have sat down at the dinning table with my laptop, and started writing the next chapter of Daniel Jones Revenge the third book in my series. But I didn't!

I decided to be decadent and to take a lunch time nap, a siesta, sleep or what ever word you may call it in your own country.  We lead such double quick lives now, always on the go, and we can forget about the real luxuries of life. Taking a midday break from this world as we close our eyes and let ones mind drift off to another plain is one of them.

I put the cat outside because the last thing I wanted, while I laid down, was for the cat to think it was time to get some fuss. For her to jump up onto my chest purring as she paddy-paws my belly while I gently stroke her head. I turned the phones off so that I wouldn't be disturbed by some stupid call from India asking if I knew I could make a claim on a car accident I never had two years ago. Everything was in place. There wasn't even anyone outside mowing the lawn or hammering away at some D.I.Y project in their shed. I even put out a note on the front door just in case there were any deliveries; asking them to leave any packages at the house next door.

I closed the bedroom door and laid my head on my pillow. Even the temperature was just right, cloudy outside so not too hot, but warm enough to be comfortable. I could feel my muscles relax. I cleared my mind. I felt sleepy and could feel myself drifting off. Where too I did not know or care about. I then sensed the sun must have made an appearance because I could feel the extra warmth on my face and the darkness of my sleep suddenly became bright.

And then it happened!

It popped into my head. It was as if someone had instantly down loaded into my mind a whole new story, like plugging a memory stick into a computer. It wasn't anything to do with Daniel Jones Revenge, but something totally different. The whole damn thing from the first scene in the first chapter to the very last scene in the final chapter; even the lead characters name and the title. It's nothing like the Daniel Jones series but a work of fiction based in the present and in the genre of Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code. My head started to buzz as my thoughts jumped from one chapter to the next, and for 30 minutes my mind was on a high that dispelled any hope of sleep. Eventually I couldn't take anymore and had to get up, and make myself a cup of tea.

Since then you would think it would be as easy as just sitting down and getting the story out of my head, but as I say there is always a but, it hasn't. The last two days have left me in turmoil. You see, it takes at least two years of very hard work, and personal commitment, from when you very first start writing to actually getting it into print. So this is the dilemma I have faced. Do I put the Daniel Jones series of books on hold for at least four years as I concentrate on this new story, and thus risk loosing my fan base as they drift off to other author's? Or do I concentrate on getting the next book out after Daniel Jones Doom and take the risk of never getting the new story published?

So I have been in two minds ever since. One minute taking the pragmatic view and deciding to concentrate on Daniel Jones Revenge, and then the next my heart jumps with the thrill of writing something totally different. So when in doubt do nought and as it's Easter nought is what I'm going to do. On Saturday I'm going to my local at The Fat Cat and Canary and take the advice of Doctor beer. The prescription is always enjoyable although the after effects always aren't.

Of course I could write two books simultaneously?

Regards

Mark

Last Friday afternoon I popped into my local pub the Fat Cat and Canary to have a drink and meet up with friends, especially my mate John Butcher. I have inspired him to take up writing after successfully getting my two books published, Frenzy a Daniel Jones story and the sequel Daniel Jones Doom. He has finished his first manuscript and is now in the rewrite stage. It's a historical piece of fiction based on true events that happened in Norwich during the first centuries after the Norman invasion when Norwich grew to becomes England's second city.

There I was supping my pint of ale when in walked Delia Smith with her husband. Now for my followers in the U.K you will know that she is one of the countries top cookery writers and T.V personalities when it comes to cooking in this country. For my readers abroad I don't know if you will have heard of Delia Smith, but if you like British Football (or Soccer to my  U.S cousins) you will know she is also the owner of my local football team, the mighty Canaries who play at Carrow Road in green and yellow under the banner of Norwich City F.C. Delia is a legend in this part of the country and what is affectionately called a national treasure.

As the evening unfolded we got talking about our combined love of N.C.F.C and of writing. Later on when the good wife turned up in the car with the children, after visiting the mother-in-law, Delia Smith posed for pictures with my family, and took great delight in hearing they are true Norwich supporters.

You never know who will pop into your life, and moments like these can only really happen if you are out there experiencing the world, and not just sitting in front of the television expecting it to do it for you. Local pubs are closing down in U.K at an alarming rate due to greedy landlords and incompetent governments of all political persuasions. So do something different and your local a good turn at the same time, and take some hours out from in front of the T.V box, and pop down to your local for a social drink and a chat, even if it's for a soft drink and a packet of crisps.

Because you never know who will pop in!

Regards

Mark.

After last weeks activity with starting the first chapter to the third book in the Daniel Jones series after the success of both Frenzy a Daniel Jones Story, and its sequel the recently released Daniel Jones Doom, my mind has been shooting off in different directions the story could take. The first chapter in Revenge follows the same style as seen in both Frenzy and Doom. All the chapters in the three books are no more than a page or so long, and all three are very dramatic in their writing. The final similarity is that all three introduce characters into the story line that appear at some stage later in the book.

The below first chapter is in its raw state. There has been no editing done, no proof reading and it may change from what eventually could be printed in Revenge. It may not even appear at all, but I like it and hopefully you will too.

CHAPTER ONENUMBER 45
The stench of death hung in the air with the rotting remains of human flesh that littered every blood splattered piece of rubble; confirming that humanities last stance of defiance had truly been confined to the history that will now be written by the new victors. Swarms of hungry flies buzzed incessantly in their frenzy to feed. They battled for space with an assortment of creepy crawlies that now feasted on the mass of massacred bodies that lay in tribute to their doom laden last stand.

A lone voice called out in vain; appealing over and over again the same name in a desperate hope of finding a response. Then something caught his attention. There on the floor was a picture. For a fleeting moment it flashed its image before the wind caught it and it tumbled over. A desperate hand reached for it, but a sudden gust snatched the picture away before placing it on the charred remains of a women's body.
Bending forward with a quick sprint Michael grabbed the precious piece of paper from the corpse and turned it over. The sudden realization of its meaning sent him crashing to his knees in dread. There in his hand was the only picture that existed of him and the women he loved. ‘Mary,’ he cried out. ‘Why did you have to die?’

So there it is. The first chapter of the third book in the Daniel Jones Story. Now there is two years of hard work in front of me before it comes to life as a book. During this time you are more than welcome to take a look at life through my eyes by following my weekly postings here on Always-hanging-around.

Time is short when you have a young family. They seem to suck every spare minute of your time. They are like Hoovers that are constantly on, rushing about. You have to plan every day at least a week in advance and the calender will have dates booked on it throughout the year. It can seem as if you never have time to do what you truly want to do. Since the release of my second book Daniel Jones Doom I have been mulling over in my head the lay out of the third book in the Daniel Jones series. I have been itching to to have a go, and every week when I find space in my busy life I have been determined to start it. But like I say there is always a but in life; something would suddenly pop up out of the blue and those precious hours would suddenly disappear.

This week though I did it! I started on the first chapter. On Thursday after my I had finished my volunteer shift at Norwich Cathedral I walked up to the Forum; Norwich's central library, sat my back-side down in one of the reading booths with my laptop, and started to write. I didn't think I would make it at first because I felt tired until I was inspired by a piece of sculpture by the artist Maria Pacheco that was on show in the cathedral. My picture below doesn't do it justice and it shows I'm a better author than I am a photographer.

Each figure is larger than life and hand carved from single pieces of wood; including the central figure of a son carrying his father which is based on Greek myth. The figures are haunting, almost creepy, but you find yourself walking around the exhibit admiring the craftsmanship. I have never seen anything like it before. All hand carved. The fine details were just stunning.

After this I had no choice but to write. There was no going home to put my feet up and enjoy a couple of quite peaceful hours to myself without the noise of family life. When I started FRENZY a Daniel Jones Story I used to visit the library once a week to get me out of the house and into a different environment, and this routine I carried on with when I wrote Daniel Jones DOOM. So there was no better place to start the first chapter of Revenge. This is the initial title I have given the book because I haven't made my mind up let on the final title. It could be Daniel Jones REVENGE, or even REVENGE on Daniel Jones, or maybe Daniel Jones and the REVENGE of the Overseers. I will just see how the manuscript pans out, and next week you will get the chance to read some, or maybe all, of the first chapter here on my weekly blog at Always-hanging-around.

Regards

Birthdays seem to come around as quickly as the school holidays and as you are just about recovering from the Christmas spending spree it all starts again. You have your daily house hold bills, and then you have the one offs like new carpets, or a car; then you have the special things to pay for like anniversaries and this can cause emotional conflict. Do you give your little ones a day to remember on their birthday, or do you splash your hard earned money on a new carpet?
It’s a conflict most parents face.  In the space of a month there are three birthdays in the family. At the same time the good wife has wanted to replace the original carpet on the stairs, and in the hallway, which was laid when our present home was built over twenty years ago. We’ve had a hectic few weekends looking around carpet shops and party venues that cater so well for young children today. These type of venues just didn't exist when I was growing up in the seventies. Hours were spent with the calculator working out if we could afford this style of carpet with that type of birthday event, but in the end we did it.

We managed to square all the circles and come up with a solution to everyone’s desires. As you read this article we will have had fitted new floor coverings for the stairs and hallway, supplied and fitted, by Bateman’s Carpets in Norwich. The invites to the children’s birthday parties will have been sent out too. Of course now we have to find the money to fund the presents. In this department the children were more than happy to help with their birthday wish list. They managed to both get these in front of us as soon as Christmas was out the way. Don't get me wrong, my little ones aren't spoiled by us. If they want something we encourage them to save up for it and then they can pay for what ever they want, within reason. We also make sure they have worked for their weekly pocket money. They have to keep their bedrooms tidy everyday and be polite to people, although it doesn't seem to work when it comes to winding each other up. They have to do well at school and if they achieve something special then they get a little bit extra.

That’s the wife and children satisfied. As for me? Well my dream of a little place in the sun, somewhere in the Mediterranean, where I can escape during the cold winter months so I can concentrate on writing my third book in the series after Daniel Jones Doom will just have to wait for another year or two!

After the release of any book all authors will be on an excited high and then, as the title of my blog goes, it feels as if you are Always-hanging-around until the first reviews start to filter through. Then the questions start bounce around your mind while you wait. Will people like your story? Will the reader see the same picture you first saw in your own head and tried so hard to transfer onto paper through the use of words? The first reviews for Daniel Jones Doom are now coming through and below is the first from America. Joseph Spuckler is a highly regarded review in the U.S and probably one of the most honoust with his views. So below is what he thinks about the sequel to Frenzy a Daniel Jones story and now you have the chance to see it too. Unlike some authors who have very large multi-national publishing companies with the financial fire power behind them to pay for reviews; this is not the case with me and what follows by the Evilcyclist is as pure as the day is long.

Evilcyclist's BlogSKIP TO CONTENTHOMEABOUT FEBRUARY 17, 2015 · 11:49Book Review: Daniel Jones DoomDaniel Jones Doom by Mark KingIt is not odd to remember a book’s storyline after two years. It is also not that odd to remember a book in the context of what was going on at the time when you read it. I do think it is a bit unusual when a book takes priority over scheduled events that you have been looking forward to. I was really looking forward to seeing Rickie Lee Jones in Dallas. She has been a favorite singer of mine, but life events and the military kept me from catching even one of her shows. I finally had a chance to see her in Dallas. At the time, I also received a copy of Frenzy: A Daniel Jones Story to review. I started the book a few hours before catching the train. Read it on the train. Read it at the venue before the concert. Regretted when the lights went down and the show started. Read it on the train home, and finished it late that evening. It was that kind of book.I was happily surprised to hear from Mark King just over a week ago that he had the second book in the series ready and would like to send me one of the first copies. Daniel Jones: Doom arrived a week later and it had a lot to live up to. Mark King is a private man aside from mentions of traveling, his blog, and living in Norwich, he is pretty quiet about himself. From the information on the cover flap, it looks like Frenzydid pretty well.I gave up fantasy and science-fiction/fantasy a while ago and read mostly non-fiction. When I tried to pick up a book in the genre its been difficult to want to read through it. I read many of these books in the early 1980s but since then, it has been hard to find a match for me. The Daniel Jones series, however, seemed to hit the spot perfectly. I gave the first book five stars which is really unusual for me to award to contemporary fiction. The characters seemed to be just right. There was a mix of experience, youth, recklessness, and caution among the characters on the side of good. Evil held that relentless drive that made them believable and hated; there was little in the way of their weakness. There was hope, blind hope, the darker side of human nature, and a sense of community mixed into the story in a near perfect ratio.Doom picks up after Frenzy ends with very little time passing. It keeps to the formula set in Frenzy with the same characters, with a few minor additions. The story now lets on a bit more about the characters and exposes new and perhaps unexpected connections between the core characters. The new revelations work well in the story and are not forced to make the plot work. They blend well together.Although not much time has passed for the characters between books, plenty of time has passed for the reader. It has been eighteen months and more than two hundred books ago since I read FrenzyDoom very gently reminds the reader of the events in the past book while progressing in the new story. I couldn’t quite place the character Wolf in the story, I knew who he was, but had forgotten exactly what his role was in the first book. The character’s past from Frenzy was reintroduced in Doom by his rival piecing together Wolf’s past while plotting against him. Cleverly done, and very effective. The important parts of the past are recounted in a non-intrusive way and eliminated my need to go back to the first book and use it as a reference. The story is well done. The plot flows smoothly and moves at a quick pace. The events in the story are all plausible if you buy into the overall premise of aliens occupying the earth — it is science fiction, after all. The actions of the aliens are really no different than any occupying force in history. Maintain dominance, recruit help from the local population, remove methods of resistance– like weapons, organization, and printed communication. Like pacified populations, most people conform, especially decades after the occupation. A few fight and use their differences to build a strong team. Doom is a sequel that fully lives up to the original book. It is part of the plan and not an afterthought. Like the first book Doom brings closure to the immediate storyline but leaves it room for continuation. A very enjoyable read and well worth the effort. Great science fiction.
