When is a Man Educated?
"When he can look out upon the universe, now lucid and lovely, now dark and terrible, with a sense of his own littleness in the great scheme of things, and yet have faith and courage. When he knows how to make friends and keep them, and above all, when he can keep friends with himself.
When he can be happy alone and high-minded amid the drudgeries of life.
When he can look into a wayside puddle and see something besides mud, and into the face of the most forlorn mortal and see something divine....

Mountain Trip 2014: Part One (Blog and Subscriber Exclusive)
For as long as I can remember, I've been in love with the Appalachians, and this past weekend, I had the pleasure of taking a bit of time off with my wife and visiting said mountains.
We went to Saluda, Chimney Rock, Flat Rock, Hendersonville and Asheville.
The weekend consisted of great fun, cool mountain rivers, scrumptious food and fresh mountain air. There was chocolate-on-chocolate at one point, and did I mention rock statues? They weren't made out of chocolate, but I'll explain all...

Creativity Needs Room
Finding your voice is a beautiful thing.
I recently finished a book by Jeff Goins, entitled, "You Are A Writer (So Start Acting Like One)"
In it, he spoke about the trade and industry, but he also touched on who you are as writer vs. who you think you are vs. who you need to be. And he wrote something great about finding your voice. He said:
Finding your voice is the hardest, most important task a writer will undertake. Some authors say it takes years. Others say it's a matter of writing hundred...

Your Response To My Apology: I'm About To Come Alive
Some great things are going on lately.
I've recommitted myself and my talents to God, to my readers, to life, and things are looking up.
Last July, I published Waking Alive. Earlier this year, I published Down Home and Before She Grows Cold. And yet, with those three great things, nothing compares to the response I've gotten over my apology.
It took a lot to write all of that, mostly because I was afraid. Very afraid.
I didn't know what the world would think of me,...

An Apology (To My Readership)
I've failed you.
I don't mean that in a, "I've failed you. I'm so sorry. So, so, so sorry. Please forgive me. Pleasepleaseplease" kind of way. I mean it in that I've failed you by not respecting you. And I'm dreadfully sorry for that.
By my own nature, and something I've yet to overcome, I am a rather impatient person. With life, I'm pretty laid back. When it comes to things I'm excited about, ideas I'm working on, stories I'm writing: I want them to get done and out!

Great Outdoors, Great Relief
This week has been very busy but I have to be thankful. And this week, it's not that hard.
I'm thankful for:
Radio interviews // People that buy actual books // This song and this album by NEEDTOBREATHE // Finding new music to agree on // Friends that try to go out of their way to find you, to see you, to spend time with you // Family that does the same // Long walks with my Mom // Long hikes with my wife // Majestic views from short mountains // Reminders that passions might be put t...
