Boxed Set - Why You Should Consider Them

Creating a boxed set may have been one of the best decisions I've ever made.  For the last three months that little set to the left has been in the top #100 of New Adult/College and Romance Anthologies.  All of these books were ones that had seen their day in the sun individually and were starting to lose traction on their own, but bringing them to life was easy when I put them in the set.  I did offer something that I found lacking in other bundle book sets, these were full length stand alones.

Other authors told me it was a mistake to bundle, but as per my normal motto, I did what I felt would work for me.  The set made it to the top #80 overall on Amazon, so I think I'll call that a win!  Was I making a ton of money selling the books this way?  Depends on what you call a ton.  The first month it released I pulled in a $18,000.00 paycheck. Granted that type of forward momentum couldn't last, but in the last two months I've managed to make $6,000.00 and then the fall to $4,000.00 but hey that's a decent payday for three months and has allowed me a little more freedom to write without worrying if I was going to survive on book sales.

The idea with pricing a book/bundle at 99¢ is numbers.  Obviously if you don't sell a score of books, you won't get the payout.  It was a shot in the dark idea, that paid off.  I think some of the craziest ideas we have as authors usually do pay off.  I'm a big watcher of what's trending on Amazon.  There's not a day that goes by that I don't look at the top 100 bestselling books in my genre.  When I decided to do the book bundle, that's what was trending.  Granted you want to be the ones setting the trend, but sometimes you have to just go with what someone else has already figured out.  I don't look at the free bestsellers, only the paid, because that's where you want to be.

On this free idea.  I don't do it.  I've tried it before, for one book series it worked, but on a whole I think the free scenario is a waste of time.  I'm sure there are authors out there that will call me out saying that it helped them, it just didn't do the trick for me.  I look at that from a readers perspective.  If I have a budget for the month and don't want to get the best books, THEN I will look at the free ones.  When I think quality, I think about paying for what I get.  Instead of going free I will kick off a series with 99¢.  Depending on the length of the book, I'll keep it at that price for anything under 180 pages.  That's a personal thing for me.  I won't pay more than that amount for a book with less than 180 pages.

On to higher priced eBooks.  I'll tell you right now, I'm not paying more than $2.99 for an ebook unless it comes highly recommended from people I really trust.  Which is another friend that's read the book and won't shut up talking about it, so I have to make myself pay the higher cost.  Believe me I don't discriminate either.  You could be J.R. Ward and unless friends are screaming about your book, my stingy little fingers aren't clicking.  I guess you can say I've been trained by reading tons of crap and paying an outrageous amount for an ebook that should have been free in the first place.  Since throwing my Kindle into the fire really isn't an option, I'm going to make sure if I pay $9.99 on an ebook that it's worth my time.

Did I mention I get a little over exuberant when it comes to books I read?  If I waste less than a dollar and hate it, I can live with that.  But ten bucks?  That's the price of a Starbucks coffee and banana bread, so you better be writing pure gold charging that price! A girl has got to have her standards!  So yeah, keep that book at under $3.00 and I'll buy what you're selling without wanting to smack you upside the head if I hate the book.

The boxed set was a great idea for me, and I think we're going to see more trending in that area for the rest of 2014.  People aren't making a ton of money right now, and they still want to be entertained.  Let's not forget that impulse buys are much easier for the reader when they start at lower prices.  As a girl who reads about four books a week, I know I'm more apt to purchase something new by someone I don't know if they keep it a price I don't mind paying.  Just my two cents worth of advice for the day.  Use it as you will! Thanks for joining us at Tears of Crimson. Excerpt
A wet tongue licking her nose woke Francesca from a lovely dream in which she was making out with Sean. A hot, sexy and knowing lover, he’d almost taken her to the ultimate peak. Hating to let go of the fragile threads to her fantasy, Francesca had no choice. The tongue had turned into tiny teeth and they were nipping at her chin. She gathered the puppy into her arms and soothed him with caresses. Then she looked at the body lying way over on the far side of the mattress. Sean’s back was turned to her and she listened to his breathing.
“You’re awake.”
The man rolled over to face her. “Sweetie has been crying since I put you to bed and crawled in myself. He wouldn’t shut up, until I finally picked him up and put him beside you.”
Francesca spat out the strand of her hair caught between her lips. She gathered the unruly mass, twisted it and pushed it away from her face. The pillows lifted her high enough to read the clock and she noted it wasn’t yet morning. Rousing slowly, she realised she still wore her sundress and her cover was a throw blanket from the closet.
Embarrassment took over. Despite the fact that she hated to apologise, Francesca didn’t hesitate when it became necessary. “I’m sorry for passing out. I don’t drink very often. I can’t seem to hold my liquor very well.”
Turning her way, he bent his arm and put his head on his hand. “You can’t hold your liquor at all. I’m surprised what came out of your mouth before you slid out of the chair.”
Terror took hold. She laid her head down on the puffy pillow and stared into the darkness. “What did I say?”
“Mostly about how you always wanted a puppy but the Snow Queen wouldn’t let you have one. Then you ranted about how children need mommies and daddies, and it was a crime against nature if a mommy didn’t even tell a daddy there was going to be a baby.”
“Oh!”
“Not all. You went into detail about how mommies should love their babies more than anything else in the whole wide, wide wor—”

“Stop! I get it. I was deplorable and boring.”
“No, your pain tore my heart out, and all I wanted to do was beat Mommy with a stick and kiss you better.” He slid close to her, lifted the now sleepy puppy over to his side and took her in his arms. “What were you dreaming about?”
Shyly, she let her finger trace his perfectly-shaped eyebrow. “Why do you ask?”
“Lady, once I put you to bed, I thought nothing could keep me awake tonight. Then I heard your moaning. It nearly had me crawlin’ the walls.”
She chuckled low, hiding her glee since the joke was on him. “I can’t tell you.” No way would she admit that they had been having hot sex in her dream, and the sounds had been in appreciation for what his hands had been doing.
“So…did my performance satisfy you?” He kissed her cheek, then pulled back to wait.
Feeling her eyes widen before she could curb the move, she asked, “How did you know?”
“You called my name. Then you moaned. Then you laughed and moaned again. I’ve been lying here worried about that laugh.”She rose to kiss his cheek in the same way he’d put his lips to hers. “Are you that insecure?”
“Not usually. But then women don’t normally laugh when I make love to them.”
“Let me assure you, I wasn’t laughing at your performance.”
Another kiss followed, and this time she moved closer to his lips.“Please tell me it had nothing to do with the size of any body parts.” Faked horror made her laugh softly.
As if that sound brought back memories, he reacted. Not waiting for her reply, he swooped in, the naked warmth of his arms and chest surrounding her. Once again she fell under a spell as his kiss reignited the earlier flames.
Soft tongue, yielding lips and a sucking rhythm guaranteed her investiture in his caresses, to the point where every thought fled and only emotion survived. Shivery and loving the sensation, Francesca engaged in giving as well as taking. Her arms circled his neck, and she filtered her fingers through his hair and then then stroked his back.
Pulling her blanket aside, Sean leaned back long enough to lower the tiny straps on the sundress now twined around her waist and upper thighs. “Here, let’s get that off of you.”
She helped him and loved the grin that lit his face when he saw her naked breasts. His eyes zeroed in on hers and the sultry gleam caught her in its strength. She found herself being pulled in, swirling, her pulse now crazy and her breath uneven. Unable to deal with such intensity, she lowered her lashes and arched her body.Trailing his lips from her mouth, to her neck, up near her ears and back down over her breast-mounds, he licked and softly bit her hungry skin. Nearing the outer side of her breast he hit the one spot on her body that tickled. Her giggle stopped him. Full of devilment, he leaned back. “So that’s what made you laugh?”
Biting her lips to stop the merriment, she nodded. “It tickles.”Movement to her left caught her attention and she shifted. While the puppy growled his dislike of their activities, he began to circle. Then he squatted and let loose.
“No, stop!” Lunging, Francesca tried to get to him, but having Sean’s body partially covering hers left her no wiggle room.Sean’s face landed on her chest and the moan that rumbled through his body made had her start laughing again. “Macho-man’s just a baby.”
Sean got out of the bed and slid on his pants. Then he lifted the shivery pup and placed him on top of the towel bed he’d made for him earlier. Dawn was breaking and the room was light enough for them to be able to make out the larger than expected wet stain.Francesca couldn’t stop herself. “The puddle’s on your side, Sean. Kinda looks suspicious don’t you think?” Typically, teasing didn’t come easy to her. But with this man, it seemed to fit. When he smirked, worry emerged and made her listen.
“Sorry, sweetheart. The room’s registered to only one person. You!”

Kindle Fire - Sharing the Love

Kindle Fire HDX 7", HDX Display, Wi-Fi, 16 GB - Includes Special Offers
I'm a Kindle Lover for Life, and I think you'll be one too after trying it out.  I don't normally advertise on my page, but today I wanted to talk about my favorite device, and why I think it's the most amazing thing since sliced bread.  I've had mine for two years now and I honestly can't imagine not having it these days.  It goes everywhere I do.  Originally I was an iPad user, but when mine hit the tile floor (seriously don't ask) and the screen was cracked, I decided to try out the Kindle Fire instead.  Best decision ever!  I paired mine up with a defender case and I think I could drop it off a cliff and it would survive.

As a writer, I spend hours at my computer each day and while that helps to sell books, the negative side to that is my vision was affected.  The constant strain on my eyes made it really hard for me to look at small print and after getting glasses, I found that reading paperbacks was still almost impossible.  It happens!  One of my favorite features on my Kindle is the ability to adjust the font to any size I choose.  I hate to say it but the Kindle made paperbacks obsolete for me.  If it doesn't come in a Kindle Book, I just don't read them these days.

I'm not a huge app user, yes I know the app companies are groaning out loud about that, but what I do love is movies.  With my Kindle I can watch all my favorite shows on the go and that just makes this little device my favorite thing outside of my desktop.  Yes we can hear groaning again, because I'm not a laptop fan. Seriously who wants to type away on one of those things?  Not I, but for those that love the laptop, more power to you!  I'll admit pricing was a huge factor into replacing my iPad for the Kindle, but it's a decision that I've never regretted!

I'm not a huge techy person.  What I was looking for in a product was a way to keep enjoying the books I love to read and the added perk of being able to watch my favorite shows was just a bonus.  When I say not a techy person I mean I don't even like to text on my cellphone.  I will however use the Facebook app to send updates.  Again, back to the size of fonts, when you're straining your eyes to see the keys on the mobile it makes it more of a hassle to share things.  I can definitely say that Kindle has kept me social.

Another perk in owning my Kindle is I don't have to drive 45 minutes to the nearest bookstore to find my next favorite read.  Instant download?  Oh yeah baby, I'm there!  Let's just say my former English Professor would be impressed with how many books I'm reading these days!  I live in a little rural town in Alabama, you know the kind where you have to drive 30 minutes just to reach a gas station?  So getting to the bookstore was big pain in the arse!

My Kindle Fire truly was the best purchase I've ever made, and I just fellt like sharing the love today.  Even if you aren't a writer, and dealing with eye strain, I could see this being a great gift for people in your life that have trouble reading small print.  My little people love playing the games on it, I wish they were reading more, but hey at least the options there.  Since my Kindle seems to get more love than their iPads, I'm guessing that it works just as well, if not better for them as well.  That's just my two cents worth on the Kindle, take it with a grain of salt, but for me it was the right choice.

Mary Elizabeth Matthews is a reclusive novelist with a great appreciation for actor Cody McAllister, so much so that he inspires a character in her newest novel. Unbeknownst to her, Cody’s friend and co-star Jennifer Johnstone is a huge fan of her books and gives the newest one to Cody. She insists he find a way to make it into a movie, saying he’d be perfect for the lead. Cody is instantly lost in the world of this novel , absorbing it in one sitting. He makes it his mission to find the mysterious author and convince her to let him produce a film version, having no idea that the character he is so determined to play was written only for him…or how his mission would change his life…forever.
Adult, Romance, 18+ Includes some non-graphic sexual situations. Excerpt
I knew Mary Beth was older than me. I had known that all along, from my dreams, from the picture, from what little I had learned from Julie and from what I had learned about Mary Beth since arriving in Texas. I had been foolish to think she was the one with the experience, wondering what in the world she would ever see in someone as young as me. Now I knew while she had life experiences that no one should ever have to live through, I was the experienced one as far as relationships were concerned. I was going to have to be the one in the driver’s seat where that was concerned, that was evident.
I don’t know what I expected Mary Beth to tell me today. Even though I feared the worst, what I feared was something that was going to end in her telling me she wasn’t interested and that she was sending me away. I would have taken that ten times over and would have lost her forever if it meant she never would have had to go through what she did. I had never felt such rage and anger and sickness over the vile things Mike had done to her. I wanted to kill him. I wanted in that moment to use every ounce of strength in the body I’d worked so hard to build, find Mike, and rip him to pieces. It hurt me in places I didn’t know existed to know that my Mary Beth had been hurt in such ways.

Excerpt
Sean Collins shared the seat kitty-corner in the four-booth set-up. He’d worked late trying to get a patient through a crisis and had gotten as far as the steak house, before hunger grabbed hold and dragged his sorry ass inside. Exhaustion had left his eyes gritty and his brain twisted like a pretzel, but two male voices still got through. Listening to a man unloading on his buddy about a mistaken one-night stand had his attention pretty darn quick.
When the friend’s advice matched with his own ideals of truthfulness between a husband and his wife, he found himself nodding. He didn’t agree with the jerk’s reasoning about being a player but he his basic counsel of honesty was sound. Not that he was married; hadn’t found a woman he could trust further than he could throw her. What was it with the females in the state of Nevada? Did they all have to get caught up in the hype of the fun city?
Suddenly, a female voice entered his awareness. The husky note in the slightly slurred words was pleasing and he concentrated on what she was saying.
“Don’t listen to your friend. Not only is he an asshole, he’s full of shit. If you love your wife, then don’t tell her—ever.”
What the hell?
The screwball continued in the same vein, proceeding to give unwanted advice to a man who was in a fragile state and probably willing to listen to anything that would get him off the hot seat.Sean came close to standing up and cutting her off. If he weren’t so tired, he’d have given her a piece of advice. Mind your own business! As a psychologist and profiler who often worked with the cops and saw every kind of misfit out there, he knew she’d most likely wrecked this man’s life. In her final statement, she let the poor guy have it with both barrels.
“In my way of thinking, being the best husband and father you can be will go some ways to making up for being the miserable, lyin’, cheating prick that you are.” Sean heard the noise of a chair being knocked over, a grunted swearword and light footsteps heading toward the door.
Something beyond his power to control brought him to his feet. The redheaded advice-giver stopped and their eyes caught for as long as it took her to stumble. Hers were pure liquid heat, the bluest blue he’d ever seen. Her glance slid past him as she straightened the chair and carefully manoeuvered her way to the door. The light over the entrance caught the coppery-gold highlights in the mane of loose hair flowing every which way over her shoulders and down her slight back. She bumped into the doorframe on her way out, stopped, re-aligned herself and then the nut-job was gone.
Stunned, he slid back down into his booth and the truth hit him. Hell, in Las Vegas there was every kind of mental disorder, maladjusted behavior, psychosis, neurosis and insanity a person could imagine, but some just blew the others right out of the murky pool. That stunning deranged wacko, whose fabulous long legs might get a man to do almost anything in order to get his hands on them, had just ended his otherwise shitty day perfectly. What a fucking shame!

When Sarah moved away from her hometown to go to college she thought she was doing it to be with her boyfriend Huck. But when she discovers he's a cheater out to get whatever he wants, she finds herself alone in a new city. Armed with only a few people she can trust, Sarah sets out to carve her place in the world.
Jeremy's life came to a stand still two years ago, but now he's trying to make something of himself. He heads off to college to put his past behind him and start something new. When he meets Sarah he knows he's in for a roller coaster ride. He hasn't felt this way about someone in a long time--he never felt like he'd feel this way, again.
As Sarah and Jeremy get to know each other, she realizes there's something special about him. Something she has never felt before. But there's something he's holding back from her, something he's keeping hidden. Can Sarah find a way to trust someone again, or will Jeremy's past reveal itself? And will she be able to handle it if it does?
Finding You is book 3 of The By You Series but can be read as a standalone novel.

Sarah's stomach exploded into a jittery mess when she saw Jeremy standing there, giving her that sexy smile. Before she could say anything, he took a step closer and threw his arms around her, pulling her into a tight hug. All at once she felt the hardness of his chest against her cheek, and the sweet smell of his cologne--it smelled expensive, whatever it was.

As their bodies pressed into one another, Sarah's breath slipped away from her. One moment she had been watching Billie, and the next she had found herself in the arms of the guy she'd been thinking about all day. Heat rushed to her face, and she was thankful he couldn't see her.
Get a hold of yourself, you barely even know this guy.
When they pulled away, he still had that beaming smile on his face. And those crystal blue eyes took all of her in--they might have been the most gorgeous eyes she'd ever seen. He was wearing a fitted, black button-up shirt with his hair spiked like it normally was. His jeans were tight, and they were rolled up at the bottom with black shoes to round off the image. The top two buttons of the shirt were undone. MeetTheAuthor FACEBOOK / GOODREADS / TWITTER / WEBSITE
Like for many, life for Kelly didn't really begin until her 30th birthday. That was when she decided she was done with the corporate ladder and was going to start publishing some of her stories to see if people liked them. Fast forward a couple of years, and she's still amazed that she's able to spend her time doing something she's loved doing since she was a little kid.
Most of her free time is spent working in front of the computer at various coffee shops around Houston. But when she's not working on her next book, she's probably sitting in front of the TV with her eyes glued to whatever Netflix show she happens to be obsessed with at the time. Do we really have to wait this long for the next season of Orange Is The New Black?!
