TubbTalk 148: How High Performing MSPs Leverage People Power for Success
In this episode, I’m joined by Dean Watmough, an expert on MSP people power. He’s the CEO and co-founder of Humnize, a UK-based business that is focused on empowering MSPs to build, develop, and retain highly skilled teams.
An Interview with Dean WatmoughHow Humnize Help Their MSP Clients to Leverage People PowerDean says it’s not easy to describe what they do: “We try to avoid the word recruitment. We find that people have had bad experiences with recruiters, and we don’t want to be damaged by association.
“And similarly with HR – it’s a term that’s clinical and impersonal and doesn’t reflect what good HR should be. So for us, we’ve coined the term “people partner.” It’s about dealing with your people in a more human way and not just ticking boxes.
“We help MSPs find solutions to their people challenges and to be proactive rather than reactive. Recruitment is just one of the services we provide and ways we support our clients. We do so much more besides.”
Where MSPs Go Wrong with RecruitmentAnyone who’s done recruitment for an MSP business knows how hard it is. It’s time consuming, but you also don’t want to pay a recruiter a fee if all they do is send you candidate CVs to choose from.
Dean explains: “The biggest mistake that you can make in an MSP when you’re hiring people is to not give it the time and effort it needs. It’s a full-time job, and it’s not enough just to post an ad on LinkedIn or a job board and wait for the applications.
“And today, you’ve also got to make your business attractive to candidates. If you can’t compete on salary, what else can you offer to make your MSP somewhere they want to work? Is it a shorter working week, bonuses or learning opportunities? It’s getting harder to find the top candidates in the industry.”
How Humnize Find the Right Candidates for Their MSP ClientsHumnize make working with them a positive experience, both for the MSP and the candidates. They also strive to understand their clients’ requirements and the business problems that will be solved when they find the right person.
“We like to deep dive into what they’re looking for and the qualities the person needs to have. We make a really detailed brief, and we also meet the existing team and experience the culture. Because we don’t believe we can promote a business without having experience of it.
“Then, we build talent pools of potential candidates and thoroughly screen them. We recruit for sales and marketing as well as tech roles, and our team has experience in all of those fields themselves, which is a big advantage. We really understand what the MSP needs. That’s people power.”
The Aspects of Recruitment That Humnize Want to ChangeDean wants to change the way MSPs think about recruitment. “So for us, it’s about credibility. We’ve been employers looking for staff, and we want to dispel the idea of snake-oil salesmen.
“We’re trying to build awareness that there are other ways of doing it. Recruiters get a bad name, but most of them are working hard, and they do it all up front. So they don’t get paid until an employment offer is made, and then it’s a commission.
“But at Humnize, we have several options. For instance, our larger clients have us on a retainer because they’re growing so quickly. We do market research first, and if we can’t fill a role, we say so. We want to be a professional partner for the MSP.”
How MSPs Can Leverage People Power for Staff RetentionWe all know that the most successful MSPs retain their staff, while others have a high turnover. Dean says no company can retain everybody, but if you treat them well, it won’t be a surprise when they do leave.
“An annual one-to-one isn’t enough. Instead, you need regular touchpoints and a more personable approach to management. Because people stay in places they enjoy working in.
“We come across MSPs who had great retention rates in the early years. But because of mergers, the environment changes and people leave. When a company is too big and you lose the human touch, people don’t want to stay.”
How MSPs Can Support Their Team’s Mental WellbeingMental health is top of the list for many business owners, but Dean says that someone is five times more likely to have a mental health issue if they work in the tech sector.
And as MSPs are becoming more in demand in the digital age, having conversations about wellbeing is more important than ever. HR departments need to be supportive, because employees tend to know their rights.
“The younger generation is much more open about talking about mental health. Because in the past it was seen as a weakness, a vulnerability. But that’s what makes us human. You can’t give people everything, so do as much as you can.”

Top Tech and Insights from Cloud & Cyber Security Expo
The Cloud & Cyber Security Expo is aimed at anyone in the technology sector that’s interested in securing SaaS (software-as-a-service) applications and data for businesses and end users alike.
The expo is part of the London Tech Show, which is one of the biggest exhibitions in the UK.
From MXDR and endpoint protection to data loss prevention and security awareness training, the expo covered a broad range of security disciplines. And of course, the speakers provided some valuable insights.
Richard Tubb and Stephen McCormick both went along to see if it lived up to its reputation.
Cloud & Cyber Security Expo IntroductionThe Cloud & Cyber Security Expo was part of the Tech Show London 2024, held this year at the ExCel Conference Centre in London’s Docklands.
Taking place over two days, the Cloud and Cyber Security Expo was just one of the five partner events located in adjacent halls featuring all the big players and up-and-comers in the cloud security space.
The trade show featured a plethora of vendors, resellers and associations, all there to showcase their products and services. Alongside these businesses occupying the show floor, there were a number of theatre spaces offering keynotes and presentations.
The event was expected to bring together over 15,000 exhibitors, visitors, sponsors and speakers, all with cloud security on their minds.
Like any trade show, there were a fair number of companies there to showcase their latest products.
The significant footfall over the two days gives both established vendors and growing start-ups the opportunity to engage with their audiences. And right now, cloud security is a thriving market.
Cloud Marketplace providers Pax8 were one of the exhibitors there to discuss their new developments with new and existing customers.
Some of the other exhibitors that caught our eye included:
Wasabi, a cloud storage providerAbnormal Security, a cloud email security platformThreatAware, an asset discovery and vulnerability toolWiz, a unified cloud security platform
Fires, Finance and PhishingPax8’s Senior Director of Security, EMEA, Mostyn Thomas, gave an insightful presentation on how lessons from the past can better prepare us for the future of cybersecurity.
Fires: Mann GulchHe started with a lesson from a man named Wagner ‘Wag’ Dodge.
In 1949 Wag Dodge led a group of ‘smoke jumpers’ (firefighters who would parachute ahead of wild fires to tackle them) in a place called Mann Gulch, Montana.
The blaze picked up due to high winds, and they were cut off from each other. And many of the men perished in the blaze.
Dodge survived only by doing something you might not expect a firefighter to do – he started a fire at his feet! The fire quickly burned dry grass around him before the blaze reached him, effectively starving the fire of its fuel.
Today fire crews are trained at Mann Gulch to learn the lessons from that day, to prepare them if they have to engage a forest fire themselves.
The three big lessons from Mann Gulch were:
Communication – radio equipment was destroyed in the parachute dropTeamwork/Training –firefighters were not experienced in working together as a teamStrategy – Forest fire procedures were too rigid and not flexible enough for fluid and dangerous situationsFinance: Lehman BrothersNext it was the lessons learned from the Lehman Brothers collapse.
In 2008, the Lehman Brothers went bankrupt as a result of the subprime mortgage crisis in the US.
The practice of subprime lending was a risky strategy driving unstable economic growth. Lehman Brothers’ assets were almost as much as the amount of debt owed on those assets, and when a mass exodus of clients occurred, the value drastically dropped all at once.
The lessons to take away from the Lehman Brothers collapse were:
Risk – Too little margin for disaster, as proven in 2008. Their risk model (QRA) was misused and decision over-reliant on itCulture – Management rewarded excessive risk-taking, driven too much by profitOverconfidence – Investing in complex high-risk products that they didn’t really understand, and didn’t follow market forces closely enough. “It won’t happen to us”Small Issues can Become Big IssuesSeemingly small breaches can become big problems if not addressed:
Optus had 9.8 million records breached. The lesson here: Don’t let known security risks sit unresolved because you think another layer of security is in place.
Uber had 57 million records breached following a series of bogus MFA requests. The lesson: Never rely on MFA alone to protect your critical assets. Defence in depth is key.
Zaun, a security perimeter fencing company, had one of their Windows 7 PCs infected with Lockbit ransomware. The company erected fencing for prisons and military installations. Therefore, some of the data obtained was highly sensitive.
This demonstrates the vulnerability of the supply chain, and the need for all partners to work together to keep each other safe.
Building Best Practice and the Changing Role of the MSPWith cybercrime being the third biggest growing economy in the world, we have to take the lead on cybersecurity.
Here are some of the ways we can become better cybersecurity partners:
Get your own house in order – make sure your MSP cybersecurity is effectiveEmbrace governance, risk and compliance (GRC)Frameworks and certification (NIST, ISO27001, Cyber Essentials, etc.)Get to those client’s board tablesFollow the dataContinuous learning and researchPartnershipsTherefore, what have these lessons taught us? As the technology advances, so must our approach change also:
Face Facts – Perform an honest and realistic appraisal on your cyber risk. Think like a hacker, not like Lehman Bros.
Culture – Aim to have all staff onboard with cybersecurity practice by altering the culture of the organisation
Back to Basics – Although new and sophisticated tools and techniques are out there, start with practicing the basics first.
Use Your Own Knowledge – Be like Wag and think what will work for your organisation and what will not work.
Cybersecurity Synergy: Nurturing High Performing Teams Through Psychological Safety and DiversityStuart Seymour, Group CISO for Virgin Media O2, provided one of the highlights for the second day of the Cloud & Cyber Security Expo.
He started his presentation explaining that there’s no such thing as a typical day in security.
Theft, fraud, protecting customers, security and governance are just some of the examples of what a Chief Information Security Officer has to deal with.
As a dyslexic, Stuart believes that neurodiversity and cybersecurity are intrinsically linked, and today leads a team of great people.
Have a Purpose and a North StarIn his early career, Stuart was in the Armed Forces.
When he was deployed to Bosnia, the UN mandate at the time meant that British Armed Forces could not be directly involved in operations.
Once the mandate changed, coming home in one piece became their ‘north star’ – a common shared goal the troops could rally behind.
He’s taken that message to heart throughout his career. Having a purpose and a north star binds a team together, encouraging them focus on achieving a desired result.
Don’t Be Afraid to FailWhen he went on to work for Lockheed Martin, he noted that you had to do something exceptional in your work to achieve an ‘outstanding’ grade in your appraisals.
To do something outstanding, it meant taking a risk and not being afraid to fail.
Reflecting on this, Stuart believes that there’s psychological safety in having the space to experiment, and to learn this way is a good thing.
When we resolve incidents, there’s a sense of relief for cracking the puzzle. But afterwards, we don’t always take the time to reflect on what we’ve learned, which is a massively missed opportunity.
If engineers are not permitted to fail, they will be less inclined to take risks and miss out on potential success, not to mention the learning opportunities that come from making mistakes.
Embracing NeurodiversityIt was when he was working for BAT that he took a risk with the SOC team he put together.
In his son’s school he was aware that one boy there was an exceptional swimmer. He was autistic though, and so any discomfort, such as asking him to swim in a different lane, would cause him upset.
Stuart noted that he picked up on changes to his normal environment, and wondered if it could be something that a Security Operations Centre (SOC) team could benefit from.
Therefore, Stuart put his team together with neurodiverse candidates as a big part of his threat intelligence strategy. He thought they would be able to spot abnormalities easier – things that neurotypical threat hunters might miss.
He was right and a result, the SOC’s success rate at intercepting threats improved dramatically.
Applying the Lessons To Build a Strong TeamNow at Virgin Media O2, Stuart adopted a similar strategy for building his team.
50% of his leadership team are women71% are black or minority ethnic30% are LGBTQ70% are neurodiverseWorks with specific recruiters and charities, he’s able to find the right people for the right roles, allowing them to play to their strengths.
He is very proud of his team. They have a purpose and a north star, and a strategy that they all understand. This results in improved engagement scores across the board.
Strong communication is key, as well as promoting psychological safety to allow his team the space to learn and develop.
He shows appreciation for his team through personalised one-to-ones with all members of the team. And he shows recognition with rewards for those that go the extra mile.
And should anything go wrong, the response he gives his team is: “Great, what next?”
This acknowledges the incident has happened, but makes the focus on how they move forward from it.
The Cloud & Security Expo had acres of things to see, both in terms of exhibitors and presentations.
As a result, it was difficult to see everything over the two days.
Professor Brian Cox gave the opening keynote via live stream on the benefits of exploring the universe.
Arctic Wolf gave us a look into a typical day in the life of a concierge security team.
A panel of security executives talked about the importance of having a cyber hygiene checklist in their organisations.
LogicMonitor gave the crowd a demonstration of their product and how it helps engineers to check the health of cloud applications to optimise performance.
ConclusionThe Cloud & Cyber Security Expo was just one of many events that were part of Tech Show London 2024, and it was very busy both days.
With such a growing market, cybersecurity products are in abundance at the moment, and that doesn’t show any signs of slowing down.
Seeing so many different products in one room was a little overwhelming, but it was a great opportunity to see what’s out there, and the trends that are developing in this area.
It was nice to see lots of solutions covering the depth of defence, security awareness training and compliance.
Did you attend the Cloud & Cyber Security Expo, or one of the sister shows? What vendor impressed you the most? And what did you think of the event as a whole? We’d love to hear your view in the comments.

Don’t Count Sheep: 3 Tech Gadgets to Help You Sleep
We all know that getting good quality sleep is key to being able to consistently perform in business and life.
I’ve written before about Why You Need More Sleep.
And we’re often told that technology can negatively impact our sleep.
In fact, in my book The IT Business Owner’s Survival Guide, I share how banning technology like smartphones from your bedroom can help you sleep.
However, I’ve found that there is tech that can help you sleep better and deeper, to aid your rest and recovery.
Here are three pieces of technology that can help you sleep.
The Simba Hybrid Duvet
A tech duvet? You may be skeptical, but the Simba Hybrid Duvet is engineered for cool comfort and to help you get a good night’s rest.
The cotton outer layer of the Simba duvet features what Simba calls Stratos Heat Control Technology, which draws heat away and provides an instant cooling sensation.
If you’ve ever experienced waking up being too hot one moment, throwing off your bed covers, then being too cold the next moment, then this tech can help you.
The duvet itself arrives in a very nice storage bag and has two sides — a blue-lined heat control side, and a plain cotton side.
The blue-lined side features the heat-control technology.
This tech helps make the fabric feel instantly cool to the touch, as well as enabling it to react to your body temperature, dissipating any excess heat to keep you cool and dry (yes, even when it has a cover on it).
Pro tip: For optimum temperature control, make sure the blue-lined side is closest to your body as you sleep.
Simba have also added a QR code to a label on the duvet for easy access to recycling or care advice – and they’ve popped another label at the foot end of the duvet, so you’ll always know which way round it goes.
The duvet is made from “Simba Renew Bio” — recycled PET bottle fibres gently combed into soft, airy layers, which offers a great feel compared with traditional luxury duvets.
In practice, the duvet really does help you get a better night’s sleep, and feels incredibly luxurious — my wife refers to it as a “posh hotel” duvet!
You can buy the Simba Hybrid Duvet directly from the Simba website, with duvet prices starting at £139.
LC-dolida Breathable Sleeping Mask with Bluetooth Headphones
If you’ve ever experienced the challenge of waking up too early with things on your mind or struggling to get to sleep at all, then this tech can help.
The LC-dolida Breathable Sleeping Mask with Headphones looks like a traditional eye mask to help block out light.
However, the mask features built-in speakers that you can connect with a device via Bluetooth to play music or sound to help you sleep!
In reality, the mask is very comfortable, blocks out light, and the quality of the speakers is very good.
The speakers can be connected to any device that uses Bluetooth — so think smartphone, tablet, or even computer.
The mask has a long battery life — I’ve used it dozens of times between charges.
When you do need to charge, you can pop out a small USB-C cord that is normally hidden away in the mask itself.
As for the music you can listen to through these headphones, I prefer to listen to one of Paul McKenna’s Hypnotherapy products.
I also use Brain.fm – Music to improve focus, meditation, and sleep.
However, you might listen to white noise or whatever helps you drift off.
This sleeping mask has become an essential part of my home and travel sleeping kit.
I’ve bought a number of these masks and put them beside my bed, in my luggage, and in my travel rucksack.
Then, I can use the mask (paired with my iPad) to listen to music to help me get to sleep at home, on airplanes, or in hotel rooms.
The LC-dolida Breathable Sleeping Mask with Headphones costs around £16 and is available via Amazon.
Dyson Pure Cool Link Fan
If you want to get a good night’s sleep, then you need to stay cool.
But during those hot summer nights, leaving the window open might lead to noise pollution that keeps you awake.
Or, if you’re a hay fever sufferer like me, then an open window can lead to an increase in allergy symptoms.
Thankfully, there is a solution to staying cool while keeping your bedroom windows closed.
The Dyson Pure Cool Link Fan is a remarkable piece of technology that I first discovered while staying in an Airbnb in London.
As with most Dyson tech, the fan itself looks beautiful.
But the real magic is when you turn the fan on. It’s quiet and powerful!
Granted, it isn’t silent, but compared to your traditional rotor fans, the Dyson is so much quieter.
The fan also features a Glass HEPA filter that captures 99.95% of pollutants as small as 0.1 microns⁵ — helping your allergies.
Additionally, the Dyson Pure Cool Link range of fans allows WiFi and Bluetooth connections, so you can control the fan via Amazon Alexa, Google Home and more.
Plus, you can control the fan, and set schedules and timers via the Dyson app, available for iOS and Android.
Yes, Dyson technology isn’t cheap, but you get what you pay for, and in my experience, the Dyson Pure Cool Fan range is incomparable to other fans.
You can buy the Dyson Pure Cool Fan range directly from the Dyson website, with fans starting at £249 ex VAT.
Getting a good night’s sleep can sometimes feel like a challenge, leaving you tired and frustrated when you’ve got a busy day the next day.
And while I typically advise that removing techs such as televisions, smartphones and tablets from your bedroom will help you sleep better, some of the techs we’ve featured in this article are definitely great additions!
The Dyson Pure Cool Link Fan and the Simba Hybrid Duvet are two great pieces of tech that help keep you cool and sleep better.
And the LC-dolida Breathable Sleeping Mask with Bluetooth Headphones is a cheap, powerful way to ensure you get off to sleep or go back to sleep if your mind is racing.
Do you have any technology that helps you sleep? Please let me know by leaving a comment below, or by getting in touch.
I hope you have a very restful sleep tonight! 🙂

Cybersecurity Masterclasses: Practical Advice To Boost Security For MSPs
The Pax8 Cybersecurity Masterclass is a great hands-on event for managed service providers (MSPs) to understand the risks in today’s threat landscape.
The topics explored in this one day event are aimed at helping IT providers develop a more comprehensive security stack.
They are hugely popular and are open to any MSP who is a Pax8 customer. Though to keep them intimate and more interactive, there are only 20 places open, and the classes are held once each month.
For the first Masterclass of 2024, I, Stephen McCormick, went along to see what they were all about.
Masterclass IntroductionsPax8’s Cybersecurity Masterclasses are held in their UK Offices in Bristol, and start off with breakfast and a chance to meet the other delegates.
After which we were ushered into the briefing room for introductions and housekeeping before the Masterclass began.
Alex Cotterell, Regional Sales Manager for Pax8 UK, started with a conversation, asking if anyone in the room would like to share their recent cybersecurity journey?
And from the responses, it was clear that MSPs had already got to grips with cybersecurity audits for their customers, but were here to gain more knowledge and confidence about best practice and selling solutions to customers.
When it comes to your typical managed service provider they tend to fit a certain profile.
MSPs are mostly male, middle class and aged between 35 and 55They’re more technically-focused, but usually time poorAnd analytical with an attention to detail and with tactical problem-solving tendenciesHowever, it’s important to remember that typical MSP customers are not like this!
So when communicating with customers, we have to consider what it is that matters to them.
How Clean is Your House?Mostyn Thomas talked about the importance of depth of defence in cybersecurity and why we should experience what it’s like to protect our own business before securing those of our customers.
The Parallels with CasinosCasinos have always taken a multi-layered approach when it comes to securing their money. Everyone in the casino’s employ are trained to keep a watchful eye on the players, and each other, in case someone attempts to cheat or steal from the business.
Now that casinos are online, they have some of the best security that money can buy, but even they can become victim of cyber criminals.
Alongside the technology, threat intelligence also plays a part. Knowing how to think like criminals and scammers helps to design better defences.
Some of the areas where casinos have improved security:
Investing in advanced facial recognition and tracking technologyAdopting threat intelligence training to help staff identify suspicious behaviourAnalysing how the casino cheats think to develop ways to catch themDespite the amount spent on security, casinos make attractive targets and mistakes do happen.
Mostyn talked about a few high-profile hacks affecting casinos that made the news headlines, including the smart thermometer on a casino lobby tropical fish tank that was left unsecured on the network.
The lesson for MSPs is to make sure you’re aware of any smart devices your customers use and take steps to secure them. You can segregate them onto their own network, keep them patched and up-to-date, and practice management, including using multi-factor authentication (MFA).
MSPs Are Becoming a More Attractive Target for HackersThe supply chain of an MSP can be another way for hackers to infect multiple businesses.
As an MSP, your intellectual property (IP) is your access to your customers, and that’s what makes you attractive to hacker groups.
According to a survey by CompTIA, 62% of MSPs are very concerned about being targeted.
The NSA recognises this threat too, and shared some advice for how to make MSP defences more robust:
Never share credentials between different users. Supply unique accounts with least privilege access to limit exposure if compromised.Use two-factor authentication to protect every account, both admin and user, against unauthorised remote access.Don’t rely on antivirus software alone to detect a breach. Consider more proactive security, like conducting internal phishing simulations to assess risk and educate users.Invest in endpoint security to see how users’ devices are accessing the network and where from.Protect against exploit kits leveraging known vulnerabilities. Use endpoint security to create policies that block access from risky devices attempting to gain egress into your network and systems. The Joint Cyber Security Advisory is an initiative between the UK and the US to tackle cyber crime and share advice on trends and attack vectors.
How Easy Would it be to Break into Your Own MSP?Focusing on the 20 MSPs that were in the room, we took a look at how many of them were showing security vulnerabilities over a number of categories.
No individual MSP was singled out, and the data was collected by Pax8 purely to highlight that we don’t always ‘drink our own champagne’. Meaning we we’re not always as prepared as we try to make our customers.

Not getting the basics right, or a lack of consistencyTechnical staff logging in as adminLack of visibility of network vulnerabilitiesNot recording or retaining logs or not actively using themInternal user awareness training not being carried out regularlyMSP supply chain not secure
Interaction was actively encouraged throughout the day. And none more-so than in the session before the lunchtime break.
We were split into four teams and encouraged to engage in discussion before giving our answer to a number of risk-related questions.
I don’t want to give away what we talked about, but it certainly got everyone thinking and talking about risk in general.
It was a great way to round off the morning and keep everyone engaged.
The Cybersecurity CloudscapeThe afternoon of the Cybersecurity Masterclass began with a look at ways (with product examples) of improving your cloud security stack.
Asset Discovery and ComplianceYou can’t manage what you can’t see. Furthermore, you can’t prove compliance if you don’t know what’s on your network.
When you have an agreement in place with a customer, it’s important to be clear about what that agreement covers. If that customer has compliance obligations, you need to be aware of that to ensure your solution is adequate.
ConnectSecure is a tool that carries out both security assessment and vulnerability management to ensure assets are secure and risks are mitigated.
Locking Down Your NetworkSome of the ways you can secure your network include:
VPNFirewallIdentity ManagementConditional AccessSecure Access Service Edge (SASE)Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA)LAN Zero Trust (LZT)Todyl is a solution that covers most of these bases, and is a great addition to your depth of defence arsenal.
The Weakest LinkPeople are often the weakest link in your defences.
88% of all data breaches are caused by an employee mistake93% of modern breaches involve a phishing attack22% of data breaches involve phishing attacks**common phishing attacks involve Loaders, Spear Phishing, Zombie Phishing or URL shortening
However, when staff are trained to spot phishing attacks they become your human intrusion detection system.
Ironscales and Proofpoint are two examples of security awareness training (SAT) tools.
The aim of these tools is to provide training and assessments to change employee behaviour, and can run phishing simulations to put this training into practice.
Some statistics on cybersecurity in the UK:
Up to 88% of UK companies have suffered breaches in the last 12 monthsOne small business in the UK is successfully hacked every 19 secondsOne in every 3,722 emails in the UK is a phishing attemptAround half of cyber attacks in the UK involve phishing37% of UK companies have reported a data breach incident to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) in the past 12 monthsThe essentials of cybersecurity for come under three pillars:
Risk Assessment – A record of all company assets with risk ratings and who’s responsible
Vulnerability Assessment – Hire a third party IT professional to conduct a vulnerability assessment and then document them as areas of weakness
Security Monitoring – Train people to be better at noticing suspicious activity and use technical auditing systems to identify unauthorised or malicious activity.
Together, all three will help you identify new risks, as well as what to test and what to monitor.
The vulnerability assessment will determine the risks, and educate staff about the types of threats to expect. In turn, this determines the skills your staff will need to provide effective monitoring.
Compliance and FrameworksThe role of frameworks is to show your customers and regulators that you have taken “appropriate measures” to keep systems and data safe and secure.
The Cyber Essentials scheme is a self-assessment questionnaire focused on 5 key security controls:
Boundary Firewalls and Internet GatewaysSecure ConfigurationSecurity Update ManagementMalware ProtectionAccess ControlSome of the questions do consider the training of staff, as well as the risks posed by your supply chain.
The Government wants every organisation in the UK to be Cyber Essentials Certified.
It’s worth noting that insurance companies believe that companies with CE in place are 80% less likely to claim on cyber insurance than those without.
Cyber Essentials Plus goes further to include an audit, as well as more in-depth checks of user credentials, 2FA, mobile devices, malware checks, vulnerability scans and an audit of your self-assessment questionnaire.
Cybersecurity Masterclass: Assured Service ProvidersIan Groves of Midlands-based MSP Start Tech gave us an insight into his Microsoft365 solution, and the benefits of becoming an accredited Assured Service Provider.
Start Tech provide Microsoft 365 Business Premium managed services to their customers under three packages. One of these is the core offering, which includes RMM, EDR, backup, teams and email security, security awareness training and signature management.
Then there are two optional add-on packages, one aimed at compliance, and the other aimed at additional security.
Part of the compliance pack includes Cyber Essentials, which is baked-in to the cost. Paying upfront gives customers something to work towards.
Assured Service ProvidersThe Assured Service Provider initiative was launched in April 2023 by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).
The idea is that once you become an Assured Service Provider, you can be officially recognised by the NCSC and recommended as an official NCSC Cyber Advisor.
In order to become an Assured Service Provider you need to have:
Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials PlusAnd either ISO27001 or IASME Cyber Assurance Level One and Level TwoAs well as these, someone from your organisation needs to complete the Cyber Advisor assessment.
Ian said that although it was a big investment, it has provided over £20k in revenue for security audits. It’s also raised the profile of his business dramatically.
There are around 70 Assured Service Providers so far, and not all of them are MSPs.
Cybersecurity Masterclass: ConclusionThe Cybersecurity Masterclass is just one of many different types of events that Pax8 hold for their MSP partners.
As technology providers and business owners, we should all be taking cyber crime seriously. It’s consistently on the rise, and the frequency and sophistication of cyber attacks means that anyone and everyone could be a target.
An event like this shows how much Pax8 invests in building relationships with their partners so that they can get the best out of their security offering.
They are a great chance for MSPs to network with other MSPs too, to discuss what products work for them, and what doesn’t.
Are you a Pax8 partner, and does the Cybersecurity Masterclass appeal to you? Or are you thinking about becoming a partner and want to know what other events they provide? If so, please let us know in the comments.
The benefits of the Cybersecurity Masterclass don’t end there either!
After the event, attendees are invited to join the Cybersecurity Masterclass Slack channel, where they can get a copy of the event slides and interact with other members of the community.
Anyone in the channel can ask their questions, share content and ideas and talk about what tools work for them and what doesn’t.

TubbTalk Bonusode: The Cloud & Cybersecurity Expo: What’s New for MSPs?
In this bonus interview, Richard speaks to Mostyn Thomas, the Senior Director of Security at Pax8 and an expert in cybersecurity. The conversation was recorded live at the Cloud and Cybersecurity Expo in London in March 2024.
Mostyn is responsible for overseeing the company’s channel security operations, empowering Pax8 partners to reduce risk, improve efficiency, and ultimately grow their business.
An Interview With Mostyn ThomasThe Surprising Cybersecurity Lesson from a Deadly FireMostyn gave a talk at the Expo, and used an analogy to illustrate the idea that we need to quickly adapt in a rapidly-changing cybersecurity environment. The story he shared was about the Mann Gulch wildfire in 1949.
Essentially, the lead firefighter told his crew to get behind the fire and drive it away. However, high winds caused the fire to blaze up more rapidly than expected, killing 13 men. In part, this was due to confusion over the instructions from the leader.
And the lesson? Mostyn says: “We need to use our strengths, but learn from lessons of the past about how things can move quickly. So, how can we adapt and look at things know using our knowledge that we’ve gained over many years ourselves, rather than just following the crowd?”
Watch a Video on the Mann Gulch WildfireHow Attitudes Towards Cybersecurity are Changing Amongst SMB OwnersWhile many SMB owners still think that cybercriminals aren’t interested in them, the MSPs that Mostyn speaks to say that their clients are starting to see that that’s no longer the case. “They may not be interested in you.
“But they want your data and your credentials,” says Mostyn. “They know it’s not an issue yet, but they want to be prepared. So we’re supporting our partners to educate the end users and find ways to protect them now.”
Why Education is Key to Making MSP Clients Cybersecurity AwareIn the IT space, we all know that cybersecurity is important, but our customers have so many other things to think about that it’s hard to get them to take it seriously. That’s why Mostyn says that education is key.
“Say to them: ‘We know someone in your sector who got attacked. And we don’t want the same to happen to you, so let us help you to protect yourself. In many cases, security can be an enabler as well.
“It can make you more efficient and help to reduce risk. And you can even help clients to save money on their insurance. Offering a security service also gives you an edge in the market. So it’s essential that you help your clients understand its importance.”
How to Deal with Objections From Rural BusinessesSometimes an MSP will say that their smaller clients in rural areas really don’t see the point in cybersecurity, believing it only impacts companies in towns and cities. Mostyn previously ran an MSP in a quiet community, and has some advice:
“It’s a slightly different mindset you need, but we’re all facing the same threats, and as the MSP in a rural location, you also have an opportunity. So if your clients push back, find stories that they can connect with.
“The police-run cyber resilience centre in your area can help with examples of rural cybercrime. You could also think about giving a talk at the local chamber of commerce or Farmer’s Union. You know that market and the local challenges, so there are real advantages for you.”

This could be powerful for MSPs creating Standard Operating Procedures.
#4 The SSO Wall of ShameFrom the awesome to the appalling.
We all know that single sign-on, or SSO, helps organisations manage user accounts across dozens of vendors, reducing cybersecurity worries — so why do so many SaaS vendors charge extra for SSO?
Well, Rob Chahin wants this to change and has created the SSO Wall of Shame.
C’mon now SaaS vendors — do better!
