My 3 Words for Unleashing a Powerful 2024

At the start of every year, I choose My 3 Words to help guide my direction and goals in the year ahead.

If you’re unfamiliar with the My 3 Words concept, it was created by Chris Brogan, who, since 2006, has chosen three words to serve as a guide for the year ahead.

I have found the My 3 Words concept to be a simple yet powerful subconscious motivator for ensuring you’re heading in the right direction through your actions and decisions.

For instance, let’s take a look at My 3 Words for 2023 and see how they affected last year for me.

Divider

The Results of My 3 Words for 2023

At the start of 2023, I published My 3 Words for 2023 And My Year in Review.

Of course, you don’t have to share your 3 words, but I find that by putting my intentions out there, they help others understand my motivations and intentions for the year ahead.

My 3 Words for 2023 were:-

Share – Share my story, my knowledge, my routines and habits, and my contacts, to help others via writing, videos, podcasts and books.Slow – Politely decline more. Do less. Think and reflect more. Seek out opportunities to get into “the flow” during work and play. Lose yourself in the activity without clock watching. Embrace a slower pace of life with more fun and more downtime.Student – Be curious. Try new things. Seek out tuition and training to aid my learning and development. Be humble and open to being taught as a beginner.

So how did those words impact my 2023?

Well, 2023 was definitely a year of growth for me, and in hindsight, the above three words did provide structure and guidelines for my daily decisions.

Share

Ever since I started writing my blog way back in 2005, and like many other content creators I’ve spoken to, I wondered who could possibly be interested in what I have to say?

Well, almost 20 years and 10,000+ articles, videos, podcasts and books since 2005, and it seems quite a few people!

Looking back on 2023, I do wish I’d made more time to share more of my personal thoughts on life and business too. In 2024, I’ll expand upon this theme by doing more writing, videos and podcasts around my own systems and routines in personal productivity, personal development and growth.

Sharing my mental health

However, the biggest win under the “share” banner, was that after many years of being encouraged to speak openly about it, 2023 was the year that I stood on stage and talked about clinical depression and my mental health challenges.

The response was incredible, and I realised that by sharing my story, I could help others who are struggling with their mental health too.

(A personal thanks to my friends Gemma Telford, who was the first to encourage me to speak up, and the wonderful folks at both CompTIA and SuperOps, who gave me the public platform to speak on this important topic).

Back in 2016, I wrote my book The IT Business Owner’s Survival Guide which contained a lot of subtle mental health strategies and insights.

Of course, what I really wanted to do was to write a book focused on mental health, but back then, the timing didn’t seem right.

Fast forward to 2024, and conversations about mental health are thankfully now commonplace.

Therefore in 2024, I’ll continue to share by writing a book on mental health for geeks like me. If you’d be interested in contributing with your own story or thoughts, please get in touch.

Slow

In 2023, I declined more paid speaking work than ever before and decided to focus exclusively on speaking work with those clients who retain my services as an advisor.

I also expanded Team Tubb with some strong hires to help continue our goal of becoming a media company, and to lighten the load on me personally.

In terms of thinking and reflection, I continued my daily journaling and hired a new life coach to help me unpick some big challenges.

On the fun side of slowing down…

Claire and I did a Ghost Hunt at Newcastle Castle KeepWe visited the Doctor Who exhibition at the National Museum of ScotlandWe joined friends for Europe’s Strongest ManClaire and I enjoyed a relaxing week in a beachside cottage in FileyWe visited the North West Computer MuseumI visited the Crash Live show for ZX Spectrum enthusiasts

… and many more fun activities!

So, I certainly slowed down somewhat, doing less work than in 2022.

But did I slow down enough?

Probably not.

Instead of using the time I’d created for myself at work to get into “the flow” (and perhaps do more sharing, as above) I found myself doing more busy work.

This is definitely a type of procrastination!

So, going forwards to 2024, and at 47 years of age, I have to be more conscious about slowing down and doing the right things.

Student

If I nailed any of my 3 words in 2023, it was this one!

I totally threw myself into seeking out new opportunities for learning, unusual classes and new teachers.

The goal was to cultivate my beginners mind, and to ask uninformed questions of smarter people than me.

Well, early in 2023, I gained a Diploma in Cryptozoology, and this was the beginning of a journey into the esoteric and spiritual.

I did a number of courses with The College of Psychic Studies in London.

I’ve always considered myself a sceptic when it comes to certain subjects like spiritualism and mediumship.

However, rather than being as “woo woo” as I thought, I found they underpinned my self development journey.

For instance, I’ve always meditated, but in 2023, I also visited The Harmonic Egg.

But, it wasn’t all peace and tranquillity, as Claire and I also smashed our way through a Rage Room. 🙂

In terms of reading, my Goodreads profile shows me I read 31 books in 2023.

These 31 reads including many books on topics I’d previously not have explored.

On a professional level, I engaged a couple of new, world-class expert coaches to help me with subjects I knew very little about.

I also attended events such as Atomicon and the B2B Marketing Expo to listen to experts and learn from my peers.

So, yes, I definitely embraced the word Student in 2023, and fully intend to continue doing so in 2024!

However, as we head into 2024, what are My 3 Words for the year ahead?

How to use your 3 Words

Think of your three words as a guide.

As a result, you can review your 3 words to help you make decisions.

For instance, I have my 3 words printed and pinned to my main work desk.

Additionally, I write my 3 words down every time in my journal.

Plus, I have a smartphone wallpaper that displays my 3 words for 2024.

(There’s a nice Canva phone wallpaper template that can help you).

The words act as a daily reminder to myself of the direction I want to head in.

My 3 Words for 2024

If you’re interested, you can also see how my 3 word process has developed.

For instance, I published My 3 Words for 2022 and How They Motivate Me.

However, if you’d *really* like to learn more about the 3 words process then go to the master!

The originator of my 3 words, Chris Brogan, gives an excellent overview of My 3 Words on his blog.

Five Powerful Security Tips for Keeping Data Secure This Christmas

Keeping your data safe over Christmas is as important as ever. We’ll assume you’ve already done this for your business, but what about your household?

That’s why we’ve pulled together a selection of seasonal security tips for you to keep family and your guests safe over the holidays.

Between Black Friday and the run up to Christmas, scammers and threat actors are trying their hardest to gain access to your precious data.

Furthermore, your family may unwrap a number of new devices that will be need your router password to get online.

Here at Team Tubb, we’ve put together a few tips for your consideration, before you settle in for a stress-free cosy winter break.

Divider

Introduction

Keeping your data safe should be something you take seriously regardless of the time of year. You probably already have all the necessary basics for your home, such as a computer updated to the latest patch for your operation system of choice, a firewall, antivirus and a password-protected router.

However, we often let our guard down with the excitement of new devices, especially after a sherry or two.

Cyber criminals won’t be taking a break, even if you plan to. And so, we’ve put together these five tips for you think about to keep your household’s data safe.

Five Powerful Security Tips for Keeping Data Secure This Christmas

Divider

Seasonal Security Tip #1: Set Up a Guest Network for Your Visitors

For those visiting relatives that will only be over for the day or overnight, they’re going to want to access your broadband. However, rather than dole out your WiFi password to your private network, why not consider setting up a Guest WiFi network.

Setting up a Guest WiFi can be as easy as setting up parental controls.

There are two advantages of setting up a Guest WiFi network:

It protects your sensitive data.It limits your network’s exposure to malware infect devices.

Also, consider investing in a VPN if you travel for work. Wi-Fi hacking is a real danger, as our article highlights here.

Divider

Seasonal Security Tip #2: Check New Smart Devices Will Comply with Next Year’s Legislation

From April, Smart Devices sold in the UK will need to comply with the Product Security and Communication Infrastructure Act 2022.

Compliant IoT devices will require individual passwords, not just a universal manufacturers password.

Uncompliant IoT devices are at risk, because criminals can use the same manufacturer’s password to gain access to your Smart security cameras, for example. From there they can review your saved footage.

Make sure you read the fine print on any devices you buy for Christmas, especially if you buy online.

If you’re unsure, then change the password on the device as soon as possible, and enable two-factor authentication (2FA) if possible.

Seasonal Security Tip #3 Be Aware of Christmas and End of Year Scams

This time of year is notoriously bad for phishing scams and other fraud. Therefore, we need to be extra vigilant, for ourselves and our families.

Here are three of the most common to be aware of, especially around the holidays:

Online Shopping Fraud

Fake websites, social media ads that look too good to be true, and cleverly-worded descriptions that look to promise goods that differ from what you expect.

Fake Delivery Scams

With everyone sending gifts and buying products online, it’s the perfect time for the fake delivery scam.

These emails often look legitimate and provide links to portals where you’re encouraged to put your username and password in to prove your identity.

Doublecheck the email address and link URL looks legitimate before imputing your credentials.

Telephone Scams

You may get a call from someone who claims to be from your phone company, calls you to discuss an early upgrade. Be careful not to give them your account details and do not impart with any money unless you’re absolutely sure they’re representing your telecoms provider.

The same goes for energy providers, broadband suppliers or any other kind of service provider.

Divider

Seasonal Security Tip #4: Consider a Pin-Locked External Drive

If you use flash drives or external SSDs, you might want to consider upgrading to a pin-locked drive for any data you need to carry around.

These devices are great for keeping things you don’t necessarily want to upload to the cloud, or for where you do not have access to the internet.

The advantage of this kind of device is that your data is completely encrypted until you key in your code, and isn’t limited to a specific operating system.

iStorage have a great number of pin-locked devices, including the diskAshur M2.

It’s packed full of security features to withstand external tampering. It’s bootable, shockproof, and despite being small enough to fit in your pocket, can carry upto 2TB of data.

Five Powerful Security Tips for Keeping Data Secure This Christmas Divider

Seasonal Security Tip #5: Backup Your Files

If the worst does happen, and one of your home devices is compromised, you may need to do a complete clean-up if a system restore is not possible.

We’ve all had to do this, either for ourselves or for a member of our family.

At this point, the affected device owner is going to thank their lucky stars if they had the foresight to previously backup their files. A backup can be either a backup to another physical drive, such as an external hard disk or flash drive, or uploaded to the Cloud.

We should all do regular backups of our personal laptops and smartphones just in case.

It’s worth doing, even if we know most of our files are backed up elsewhere.

Data can be lost if we accidentally overwrite files, or if files are deleted by undetected malware.

Divider

Conclusion

It’s true that we should be vigilant of phishing and other scams all year round. And we should always keep our software up to date.

If a sale is too good to be true, check again before you part with your money.

As technical experts, we’re our family’s go-to member of the household when the broadband router needs a reset. So, we should go the extra mile and install the latest software updates for all our household tech while we’re at it. Doing so will ensure it’s difficult enough for other unwelcome guests to access the network.

Taking work home over the holiday is tempting too. So if we are taking projects home on a flash drive – why not buy a pin-locked portable drive to protect your data.

Are you making sure the data in your home is safe over the Christmas period? Have you lost data because you’ve left your flash drive in a jacket pocket, and perhaps left that jacket on the train? We’d love to hear how you’re preparing for Christmas and the new year in the comments.

Revealing Event Takes From The On The Road Round-Up 2023

In 2023, our calendar was bursting with great events for Managed Service Providers (MSPs) and IT business owners to attend.

Here at Tubblog, we managed to attend several events, which we were able to reflect upon shortly after. These reflections were recorded as travelogues.

The On The Road Travelogues were a chance to share our views on the event, the speakers and the presentations.

Alongside our key takeaways, we also had a chance to inject a bit a fun into these recordings – in the form of quizzes.

Below we’ve the collected the five On The Road travelogue recordings we made in 2023, for you to revisit.

Divider Introduction

Beginning as an idea to debrief Team Tubb after an event, we began the On The Road Travelogues to give our verdict on the events we had just visited.

It was a good way to discuss the event, and pick out our highlights, as well as speakers and trends to look out for.

Then we thought, perhaps others might like to know what we thought as well.

Divider

On The Road Episode #1: Channel-Sec 2023

The first travelogue took place as a follow-on from Richard Tubb and Stephen McCormick‘s visit to Channel-Sec conference in London, in May 2023, including some of Stephen’s prior travel mishaps.

On The Road Episode #2: CompTIA Channelcon 2023

The second travelogue took place in August in Las Vegas, Nevada for CompTIA Channelcon. Richard gave his key moments with Akamai Linode‘s James Steel, and they discuss the rejuvenating oxygen bar.

On The Road Episode #3: Huntress Breaches & Brews UK Tour 2023

In October, cybersecurity experts Huntress toured four cities in the UK: London, Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol. Richard and Tracie Orisko discuss how the events went, kebab meat and chips and Brummie slang.

On The Road Episode #4: Managed Services Summit North 2023

Richard and Stephen talk about their highlights from the MSS North event, which took place in November, including meeting footballing legend Kevin Keegan.

On The Road Episode #5: B2B Marketing Expo and Contact Centre Tech Expo 2023

Richard and Pascal Fintoni went to the ExCel in London in November for two valuable conferences. Listen to their takeaways from the expos and which desserts they decided upon.

On The Road Returns in 2024

Team Tubb will return with more On The Road Travelogues in 2024, were Richard and the team will be reporting on more great events for MSPs and IT business owners. And of course, more quizzes.

Did you agree with the highlights we mentioned in these travelogues? Perhaps there is an event you think we really should cover next year?

Please let us know in the comments.

TubbTalk 143: How to Navigate the Cybersecurity Landscape: A Comprehensive Guide for MSPs

This podcast episode was originally recorded live as a chat between Richard Tubb, Dray Agha and Joe Burns on the topic of cybersecurity. Dray is UK manager for threat operations for Huntress, a managed cybersecurity platform.

Joe is the owner of Reformed IT, an MSP based in the East Midlands. He’s also a Huntress customer, using their outsourced SOC services. They both generously gave up their time for this TubbTalk Live show.

An Interview with Dray Agha and Joe Burns

Watch the Video of the Interview

The Huntress Approach to 24/7 Cybersecurity Support

If a business decides to outsource their SOC (security operations centre), then having 24/7 support is essential. It’s impractical for a company to provide this just with local staff.

So, Dray explains: “We have people in the UK, Australia and North America. And what’s cool is we don’t let anyone work outside of 8-4 hours. We don’t want analysts experiencing burnout, so we try to follow the sun and let them do normal hours.

“For me, I don’t want anyone working until 3am to resolve a problem. So international staff is key. But I also want customers to get the Huntress experience regardless of where those analysts are. And we achieve that by immersing employees in the team culture so it’s consistent.

How to Assess Your Cybersecurity Systems

Joe explains that because cybersecurity is a priority for Reformed IT, they make sure that everything they use for their clients they also use. “So our stack is made up of those same tools. We’ve been able to use them to resolve major breaches for clients.

“Of course, nobody is 100% secure, but it’s in our best interest to look at all the potential risks. And then work out how you can mitigate it. Which tools do you need, and what control measures should you put in place?

“But you have to really understand the risk before you can defend against it. Personally, I want to work out how hackers get in. Because once you know that, you can control risks. It’s an evolving cycle of checking and testing.”

How Huntress Support Their Clients to do Cybersecurity Better

Firstly, Dray says Huntress encourage MSPs to protect their own internal assets. One way to do this is through the free Neighbourhood Watch tool that they have. This allows them to quickly identify problems.

“We’re quite good at figuring out when something’s misconfigured. During an intrusion we’ve often pointed things out to a partner and suggested they fix it. And offer support to do that, too.

“We always try to iterate and become better. Sometimes that means coming up with a solution at the point we notice a threat. For instance, we spotted adversaries looking for passwords.

“So we reverse engineered our agent to collect password files and secure them. We didn’t look at them, but we told the partner about it. We want them to be proactive with their defence.”

Understanding Session Hijacking

Joe says that session hijacking is a big thing that the MSP community is seeing at the moment. “I’ll give you an example to help you understand it. One of our clients is based in Nottingham.

“We got a notification to say that they had just signed into Office in Switzerland. We contacted them to make sure they weren’t using a VPN. They had, however, received an email which they clicked on. So the hacker had used it to gain access to their Microsoft mailbox.

“I always recommend multi-factor authentication (MFA). But imagine you go to a festival, they scan your ticket and give you a wristband. As long as you wear it, you can come and go all day. The same applies when you sign into a website, even with MFA. So MSPs need to help clients to lock things down.”

The Importance of Conditional Access Policies

Dray and Joe both agreed that conditional access policies are essential, and the more complex the better. Dray explains: “Say you only use Chromebooks. You can create a policy that only lets Chromebooks access your networks.

“They’re great for frustrating adversaries, but not enough people are using them. One reason they’re so good is because even if the hacker has the right password, they’re still denied access.

“These are cheap obstacles you can put in the way to make things harder for the cybercriminals. And you’ll also get notifications when an attempt is made, which can help to strengthen weak points.”

Why Government Involvement can Help Regulate MSP Cybersecurity

Joe says that he’s in favour because MSPs are in a powerful position. “For instance, we’ve got clients involved in extensive supply chains. So the more protection they have, the better.”

Dray adds: “IT is a sort of governing entity, and it’s so important. That’s things like national infrastructure – electricity, water and so on. We need to protect against aggressive nation states. And we also need to protect our clients from cowboy IT providers.

“And on top of that, companies, schools and hospitals are being ransomed. The more stringent the IT regulation, the better. The only thing I’d add is that the MSP and IT community need to be involved in defining those regulations.”

SBSC North West: Advantages of Sharing Best Practice Among Local Peers

The SBSC North West group is an independent forum based in and around Manchester, in the UK.

The group meets once a month and is open to all local Managed Service Providers (MSPs) and IT Support businesses.

Richard Tubb, and I, Stephen McCormick, were invited along to see how the SBSC North West group conducted their version of a peer group meeting.

As the last one to be held of 2023, there were a few surprises for the attendees too.

Divider Listen Here to The TeamTubb Travelogue Divider
SBSC North West Group

There are many different reasons to attend a local peer group for Managed Service Providers (MSPs).

They’re a chance to meet other MSPs and discuss best practice. To talk about emerging trends and opportunities for collaboration. You can discuss how to solve the problems of running a modern IT business, as well as the benefits and shortcomings of the tools you’re using.

It’s a group run by MSPs for MSPs.

Robert Gibbons of Cara Technology chairs the SBSC North West group, and Dave Brereton of MySon Pages hosted the event at the Zen Internet building in Rochdale.

The Last Meeting the SBSC North West of 2023

There were nearly twenty of us in the room on Tuesday 21st November 2023  inhe boardroom of the Zen Internet building, located on the top floor of the building that used to be the headquarters for the Co-Operative. Now called the Alan Turing suite, it’s a room that’s dominated by a large circular table somewhat reminiscent of a Bond villain’s lair or Camelot’s round table.

As it was to be the last meeting before Christmas, attendees were asked to bring a tin can of food in for the Rochdale Foodbank and Soup Kitchen Rochdale.

Attendee Introductions

The meeting began with everyone giving an introduction.

This consisted of their name, and a little bit about their business. This could be the type of customers they support, how long they’ve been running their business and where they’re based.

Richard and I weren’t the only non-MSPs in the room however. Phylip Morgan and Michael Breeze of Pax8 were also in attendance.

The SBSC North West group sometimes invite third party vendors and solution providers to get better insight into their products and future developments.

Discussion Topic: Outsourcing

The first topic up for discussion was around outsourcing. Specifically, how to find good companies to work with and avoid the bad.

Here were some of the points raised:

Before you outsource, it’s good to decide what your core competencies are. It’s best to keep the things you’re best at to yourself and consider outsourcing other thingsIt’s a good idea to outsource those things that you don’t want to spend your time doing yourself.Strategic Partnerships with other MSPs could be one consideration. You might find another MSP who specialises in those elements you need help deliveringThen there are specialist providers like Uptime Solutions, who can deliver a Security Operations Centre (SOC) or Network Operations Centre (NOC) provision as a white label serviceVirtual Assistants (VAs) are workers that you can hire for a few hours each month to deliver the parts of your business that take up a lot of time, or distract you from growing your business

The SBSC North West Awards

In partnership with Pax8, and as a way to give something back to the group, Rob revealed the winners and runners up in a number of categories.

The winners received a lovely cut-glass award with their name and the category they won it for.

Just before the pizza arrived, Richard and I recorded a live Travelogue with our Content Strategist, Pascal Fintoni, with everyone else in the room as special guests.

We talked about our experiences at the Managed Services Summit North, earlier in the day. Then we invited a few of the people in the room to give their impressions of the Summit too. This included Phylip Morgan from Pax8, Robert Gibbons of Cara Technology and Sam Sheridan from Sheridan Computers.

2024 for the SBSC North West Group

For 2024, several areas for MSP business improvement were highlighted as possible themes for future meetings.

Themes included: Automation, Outsourcing, Financials, Processes, Standardisation, Staff Confidence, Expectations, Measuring Results and the Rollout Process.

To finish off the meeting, Pax8 were put on the spot with the MSPs in the room. The attendees were asked to give their criticism on ways Pax8 could improve their services.

Michael Breeze and Phylip Morgan were there to listen and offer their response.

Some of the criticisms included:

NCE licence issues making billing difficult to reconcile at the moment. Would this be fixed in the new marketplace, coming next year? The platform doesn’t perform too well with Microsoft EdgeIt’s difficult to know where to go for support, whether it’s Pax8 or the individual vendorAccount managers don’t have a very good handover process. New managers don’t seem to understand the customer’s requirements

Some of these criticisms were addressed though:

Licencing will be tighter in the new version of the marketplace, with clever automation to make it more efficientAccount managers will be listed in the portal, so you know who to go to if you have any issues

There were also some compliments for the Pax8 Mission Briefings and The Pax8 Academy, with both recognised as excellent benefits for Pax8 MSP partners.

Closing the SBSC North West Meeting

Robert thanked everyone for coming and making a contribution – to both the discussion and the food bank collection.

Both Richard and I really enjoyed the meeting, and enjoyed meeting local MSPs.

If you’re an MSP local to the North West of England, you should definitely give the SBSC North West group meetings a go. It’s a great way to network with your peers and learn some great insights on trending tech and best practice.

Tech Priorities in The Cloud, Security and AI from MSS North 2023

There are a lot of events in the Managed Services calendar throughout the year, many of which showcase some of the incredible technology vendors have to offer.

It’s no surprise that the number of companies who have invested in technology to keep data and systems secure are on the rise. It was apparent by the sheer number of cybersecurity vendors present in the exhibition hall.

However, there was more to the Managed Services Summit North than just cybersecurity pitches. Thought leadership, cloud services, best practice and artificial intelligence were also key themes at this event.

The Managed Services Summit North (MSS North 2023)

The Managed Services Summit North is one of now four regular events run by Angel Business Communications and IT Europa that take place in Europe. Managed Services Summits are held in London, the North of England, the Benelux region, and from next year, the Nordics.

This event took place in Manchester at the Manchester Central Convention Centre on Tuesday 21st November 2023. It was a one-day event, sponsored by many leading names in the channel, including: Pax8, Arcserve, Connectwise and Kaseya.

Aside from the exhibition hall, where MSPs could talk to the sponsors, there was an action-packed itinerary of speakers too.

Here are some of the highlights.

MSS North 2023 Opening Keynote: Kevin Keegan on Giving 100%

Footballing legend Kevin Keegan kicked off proceedings with a fabulous keynote speech about ‘Giving 100%’, where he introduced us to his ‘Dream Team’.

Kevin’s team of eleven consisted of words fitting his definition of giving 100%.

Words like: Reputable, Maximise, Attitude, Discipline and Culture – all of which add up to 100 if you convert each letter of the alphabet into a number.

For each word, he gave a short quote from a famous person. One of my favourites was this one from American author John C. Maxwell:

“Motivation gets you going, discipline keeps you growing.”

Kevin gave real world examples and anecdotes from throughout his football career, both as a manager and a player. It was an uplifting way to begin the summit.

Elevator Pitches from MSS North 2023

Many of the vendor sponsors put forward some elevator pitches throughout the day, which were no longer than fifteen minutes. Some of them were quite interesting.

Building the Modern Cloud

Nerdio, a company which specialises in cloud management plaftorms, told us all about Nerdio Manager for MSP.

Speaker Joseph Landes began his pitch with a quote from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella:

“Our industry doesn’t respect tradition, it only respects innovation.”

Joseph said, modern MSPs are facing unique challenges:

Native tooling is not designed with MSPs in mindAzure and Intune are complexRapid rate of changeMargin risk

Nerdio’s cost estimator gives you an accurate and scalable estimate for cloud workspace solutions.

Joseph also told us about Nerdio’s partner programme, called Partnerd. As well as Nerdiocon, which is taking place in the Dominican Republic in February 2024.

Winning in a Cloudified World: Data is the New Oil

Pax8’s Phylip Morgan gave an excellent talk on how data is the new oil, and is a massive opportunity for businesses.

In 1901, one of the largest reserves of oil was discovered in a little town just outside of Houston, Texas. The backwater of Spindletop suddenly expanded from the sheer volume of oil it produced, which revolutionised industry and transportation.

Today, we can gain an advantage in three significant ways:

The power of proximity: leveraging your local presence

First class service: happiness through kindness and courtesy

Knowledge is power: leverage your technical expertise, skills and insights.

Cloud services today are bought through a series of online catalogues – and Pax8 are no different. However, they are looking at changing this in the near future.

Pax8’s new marketplace will be more than an online catalogue. It will provide product recommendations based on data-driven insights.

The data is synced directly from your PSA (professional services automation) and RMM (remote monitoring and management) systems to provide some value-added benefits.

The data is held in a fully GDPR compliant private container, where it is categorised and protected, and where it links to three new functions:

Opportunity ExplorerSolution CentreCustomer StorefrontOpportunity Explorer

This gives the partner a top-down category view of their customers’ cloud applications, identifying any gaps or unrealised revenue. It shows their security posture, suggesting areas for improvement all within a simple interface with CIS controls on endpoints.

Partners can use security posture scores to advise customers during their technical business reviews.

Managed Services Summit North 2023

Solution Centre

Allows partners to configure and price intuitively. It includes a quote builder tool that can be shared in multiple ways, to avoid them sitting dormant in your email outbox.

Customer Storefront

A full-branded storefront linked to payments, customer services and where clients can manage their subscriptions and accept quotes.

Panel Session: Building a Better Mousetrap

Will Garside from IT Europa held a panel with some of the morning’s pitch-leaders, from Arcserve, Pax8 and LastPass.

Predictions for 2024

SaaS buyers have not given enough thought to disaster recovery and business continuity, says Steve Butterworth of Arcserve.

Pax8’s Phylip Morgan believes that Microsoft Copilot will revolutionise how we use AI to save time and gain a productivity edge over competitors.

The killer sales question to ask MSPs

Phylip said you have to think about how to start a conversation about security with your customers.

Would an outage in the cloud push customers back towards on-premise data storage?

Steve said it would be a good reason to consider a hybrid solution, but Phylip disagreed that outages would cause such a shift in cloud adoption. It would just drive cloud providers to be more resilient.

How will M&A affect the sector in 2024?

Phylip said that he regretted selling his MSP too early. It’s exhausting running an MSP, but there are some golden opportunities ahead. So, don’t make the same mistake he has.

How to speed up the sales cycle

Will from LastPass said, you should leverage your vendor partners and their services.

Afternoon Keynote: How to Become One of the Worst Companies in the UK to Work For

Following lunch, MSS North 2023 continued with another great keynote.

Kate Wood, an expert on people and culture, delivered a wonderful keynote on how not to run a business if you want to keep your best talent.

She started off with a few interesting statistics:

On average, tech workers are approached about new jobs 3.61 times a month54% of UK tech employees work more on weekends/evenings than before Covid-19Mixed gender teams (up to 50% women) outperform male-dominated teams in both sales and profits, yet only 21% of tech employees are female

Then, Kate took a look at three aspects that companies can easily get wrong if they’re not careful:

LeadershipStrategyCommunicationLeadership

Examples of bad leadership include a lack of trust and empathy, and a failure to live up to business values.

Also, poor communication, a lack of recognition and being too busy to lead effectively.

Whereas, good leadership involves performance management, promoting personal development and encouraging upskilling. As well as open and honest one-to-ones, mentoring and providing health/mental health support.

Strategy

Poor strategy means no plan, or a reluctance to review existing plans. No communicated targets, or targets that keep changing, and a team that doesn’t help to pick up the slack when required.

Good strategy involves a plan that is documented, communicated and reviewed at regular intervals. Milestones that are realistic and wins that are celebrated big or small. It’s also about ensuring that personal, team and company goals are in alignment.

Communication

Bad communication comes from inconsistency, a lack of documentation and mixed messages from multiple channels. Side meetings and hearsay, and a lack of trust in the process are also examples of poor communication.

Also communicating out of frustration or anger can lead to avoidance from the person you’re communicating with, which can end in disaster.

Conversely good communication involves listening, encouraging feedback and reviewing meeting structures regularly. Over-communicate any changes, hold lunch and learns, and shout about what you do well to build a culture of trust and recognition.

It’s especially important to ensure communication works for anyone in the organisation, with post-Covid hybrid working arrangements to make sure anyone isn’t left out if they’re not present in the office.

Leveraging AI in Cybersecurity: Key Considerations

Kyle Torres of Sophos gave an interesting example of how threat actors can use tools like ChatGPT, despite the guardrails.

Artificial intelligence is often shown in the press as a scary thing we should all be afraid of.

However, AI comes in a number of forms, including Machine Learning, Deep Learning and Generative AI.

AI is responsible for lots of useful applications:

Midjourney is an AI driven image generator – creating images based on your text promptsBard will write you a script from a simple prompt, in any style you defineSynesthesia can create avatars to help deliver sales training to sales operatives

We all know that AI can be misused too.

ChatGPT won’t write a piece of malware if you ask it. There are clever failsafes in place to prevent that. Despite that, it will help you convert an email that you could use for phishing repurposed into a multitude of languages.

Kyle described four prompts that would be allowable singularly on ChatGPT, but together could be used for nefarious purposes by a threat actor.

Then there’s WormGPT, which will allow cyber criminals to train their own chatbot using ransomware data.

Education and Protection

By having a conversation with our customers about Generative AI and the dangers, we can limit any exposure. They can build an acceptable policy for Generative AI, for example.

Secondly, you should ask if your security products are monitoring Generative AI.

For example, Sophos Firewall has a specific Generative AI policy enforcement category.

What Did You Think of MSS North 2023?

There was so much to see and take in on the day, but everything was within easy reach at MSS North 2023. The exhibition hall was only a short walk from the auditorium, and the speaker itinerary allowed for a lot of presentations, panels and pitches.

The number of security vendors in attendance was telling of how important security has become for managed service providers and their clients.

However, the speakers on the day gave some excellent presentations too.

Did you attend MSS North 2023? What was your highlight? We would love to hear about it in the comments.

TubbTalk 142: AI, The Future of Managed Services and Pax8 for MSPs: What You Need to Know

In this episode, I speak to Phylip Morgan, the Chief Revenue Officer at Pax8. A cloud marketplace, they believe that the distribution market and the whole channel is fragmented, and somebody needs to unite and bring it together. This will be essential for the future of managed services.

An Interview With Phylip MorganWhy Data is Like Oil

In recent years, there’s been a data explosion, and businesses are constantly measuring analytics. So, Phylip explains: “Just as the discovery of oil changed the world, data will transform it too.

“It’s the new currency that’s creating huge shifts. And at Pax8 we work with data to give our clients vision and visibility through their cloud ecosystem. It’s gathered from the RMM and PSA, from mobile usage and more.”

Pax8 aggregate the data for their clients and refine it into useful information. That’s things like customer buying habits, gap analysis and market behaviour. The client can then use this for regular review and planning sessions, which is really valuable.

Why Data Sharing Doesn’t Affect Your Competitive Advantage

In the modern world, everybody is giving their data away every day. So all they can do is find ways to safeguard themselves. And the best option, Phylip says, is to make sure the data you give away is shared with trusted partners:

“Because if you’re using a free product, ultimately you are that product. So we make it quite clear that when we use our customers’ data, we’ll give it back to them as insights. We won’t sell it to a third party and we won’t do anything else with it.

“Let’s be honest – this is a journey and we’re all working out the best way to do things. But the market can decide whether or not they’re happy with data sharing. At Pax8, it all comes down to trust, and we want our clients to feel confident in how we handle their data.”

The Pax8 Approach to Community

Phylip says he’s a big fan of The Go Giver by Bob Burg and John David Mann (also a Team Tubb favourite!). “He talks about being a servant leader, which is about approaching the market with a ‘how can I help’ mentality. It’s the opposite of having a ‘me first’ view.

“And that’s the way we do it at Pax8. Our founder and CEO, John Street, is the epitome of a servant leader. So we all take our cue from him. And remember that humans aren’t logical, whether they like it or not.

“There’s an emotional level to us which is both IQ and EQ. So the heart drives the head, which drives the hands that do the leadership. And a servant leader uses those hands to support and nurture their employees. Pax8 is all about team players.”

Pax8 Beyond and the Future of Live Events

The ‘Beyond’ event is Pax8’s flagship event. Phylip says it’s a great way to get closer to their customers and better understand their businesses. “Those insights help us to help them to grow, to be more operationally efficient, and manage risk better.

“Rob Ray, CVP of Community and Ecosystems, wants to take ‘Beyond’ around the world. So as well as the Colorado event, we’re going to host in EMEA too. For us, and for all event organisers, conferences like Beyond are essential for community and enablement.

“We’re careful to make sure that there’s a mix of speakers, so it’s not all vendor focused. We also aim to give educational opportunities, because that really helps with MSP growth. That should be a key part in events in future.”

The Pax8 Culture

How does Pax8 attract the best and brightest minds in the tech world? Through their culture, Phylip explains. “Because culture is everything. Peter Drucker said ‘culture eats strategy for breakfast’. And yet so many business owners ‘skip breakfast.’

“Why do they do that? If culture is so important, why don’t they prioritise it? For Pax8, the customer is first. Because without them, we don’t have a business. So the best decision for us is to have the most motivated workforce in order to serve the customers better.

“We have the best community leader, channel leader and marketing people. So we need to hire the best talent. We explain what we do, and for whatever reason it resonates with employees. They operate with integrity, honesty and trust, so our clients trust us too.”

What AI Means for the MSP Sector

AI is one of the three jump curves that MSPs should be aware of (the others are security and voice technology). MSPs need to consider AI in terms of what it means for their customers, who could be in any industry.

“My prediction is that Microsoft CoPilot will be a game-changer. It’s an AI assistant, which is really helpful. Firstly, unlike ChatGPT, the data you give it is contained. It can’t go anywhere else, or be used to help the AI get smarter.

“Secondly, CoPilot is going to help massively with productivity. It sits alongside all the other tools you’re using and can take over the more mundane tasks. So it can give you a meeting summary, identify action points and carry out research. All of those are game-changers.”
