INTERVIEW: CHELSEA HODSON
![]()
New York City
Chelsea Hodson is smart, has good taste, and writes very, very well. People often talk about vulnerability as a weakness, but the word’s deeper meaning does not mean being susceptible to attack — it is the ability to withstand attack, to survive, to endure. It is about being a boss in a deep and soulful way. In this sense, Chelsea Hodson’s work shows an unflinching strength and vulnerability in a way that is as intellectually vibrant as it is grounded in the body.

This is my favorite image from julietescoria‘s collection of poems Witch Babies. I think it is Juliet’s favorite, too. The Poem was called Team Angst and was about two girls in a mental hospital and also scar envy. There is a little reference at the end to sea world so Juliet asked me to draw a Shamu even though there aren’t any Shamu’s in the poem. This, I felt, gave me the creative License to do whatever the fuck I wanted.
When I was 12, I cut myself. I did it because my parents were crazy hoarders and I would do anything to get out of their house. A mental hospital was very much so a preferable place to live. There was a lot less crazy in a teenage mental ward than in my family home. I don’t remember what I day dreamed about when I was there. If I had been as close to sea world as Juliet was in her facility, I might just have dreamed about this. I loved orca whales back then.

This is an illustration for julietescoria‘s poem Handle With Care which is about, like, not really doing that. It has a fire and a car in it, though not as the same image. But fuck it. I am a rebel and I do what I want.

I have several copies of the German edition of Black Cloud that I don’t quite know what to do with. They have these full-color stills from my videos and 5 additional stories that weren’t in the American version. If you want to buy one for $8, I will write a poem (in English) on the topic of your choice in the front. (PayPal to julietescoria at gmail, make sure to include your address and your poem topic of choice.)

Amelia Gray interview at Vice

I interviewed Amelia Gray at Vice. You should buy Gutshot NOW NOW NOW!
Amelia Gray is an author I’ve long admired. Her first book, the vignette-comprisedAM/PM, was published by indie mainstay Featherproof Books back in 2009, and established Gray as a truly weird and formidable talent. Gutshot is her fourth book, and her second on Big 5-imprint FSG, following her aptly named novel-in-threats, Threats(several of which VICE featured in 2011). The stories in Gutshot, also aptly named, get at you right in the viscera, full of bodily fluids and strange sights and smells. They often end not with a neat tying-up of the various elements, but as if something exploded, like dynamite breaking down a door.
