An interview with D. Bryant Simmons, author of How to Knock a Bravebird

3D Thick no reflection

Today, I am pleased to welcome the lovely D. Bryant Simmons, author of  “How to Knock a Bravebird From Her Perch”. It is a dark family tale of domestic violence.

Welcome D! It is a great pleasure to have you here today!

Thank you Fros, the pleasure is all mine!

So tell us about  “How to Knock a Bravebird from her perch”. What made you write about domestic abuse?

It is because it has plagued my family for more than 3 generations. I’ve seen how it can destroy family units and relationships, even between victims. I wanted to find a way to reach out to women in that situation and let them know that they are stronger than they think they are. And to say that they have a right to stand up for themselves.

What was your inspiration for the book?

“How to Knock a Bravebird From Her Perch” is inspired by my great-grandmother. She married a horrible, mean man and had 9 kids! Her story ends much differently from the book but she was still the major inspiration for it.

What are you working on now?

I’m currently in what I call writing-only mode, which means no reading and no editing. It’s by far the most fun for me. When writing new material, I generally work on several projects simultaneously. I’m jumping back and forth between the second and third books in The Morrow Girls Series. Both are sequels to “How to Knock a Bravebird From Her Perch”. The way I have the series structured I’m able to work on the third book without finishing the second because each book has a different main character. I also need a mental break from time to time so jumping between them keeps me fresh.

Sounds like you’re keeping very busy! Well done! Tell us about your blog. What will readers find there?

Well, I have two blogs actually and they are both about female empowerment. I write about violence against girls and women. I write about parenting and self-defense and anything else that I feel can help us make tomorrow better than today. You can find out more at http://www.dbryantsimmons.wordpress.com or http://www.dbrayntsimmons.blogspot.com.

If you could choose another profession, other than the one you are in, which would you choose?

That’s easy. I would go back to education. I still plan to someday. I want to put together a curriculum that is empowering for girls and people of color. So much of the education system, in the US at least, is organized through the prism and perspective of white patriarchy.

What is the Morrow Girls Fan Club?

It’s basically an all-you-can-read buffet about the series. Members get exclusive access to extra scenes and chapters, alternate endings, character diaries, and my thoughts about the writing process. Each member also gets email alerts when I have an event or there’s a new book in stores. The basic membership is always free and includes limited perks but the premium membership is $15 per year and also includes novellas and short stories about the characters from the series. Plus premium members have access to the Fan Club website where they can chat amongst themselves and with me.

Who is your favorite poet? Quote a couple of lines from your favorite poem.

Favorite poet…hmm…Well, my favorite poet is Maya Angelou. She’s also one of my favorite writers. But my favorite poem is Mother to Son by Langston Hughes. Here it is (by the way you have to imagine it spoken with a southern accent):

Well, son, I’ll tell you:

Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.

It’s had tacks in it,

And splinters,

And boards torn up,

And places with no carpet on the floor—

Bare.

But all the time

I’se been a-climbin’ on,

And reachin’ landin’s,

And turnin’ corners,

And sometimes goin’ in the dark

Where there ain’t been no light.

So, boy, don’t you turn back.

Don’t you set down on the steps.

‘Cause you finds it’s kinder hard.

Don’t you fall now—

For I’se still goin’, honey,

I’se still climbin’,

And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.

Thank you for that – it was beautiful! What about your workstation? Can you describe it? And are there any favorite objects you have placed there for inspiration?

My desk is a mess. A complete utter mess. I’m currently writing in two notebooks (my attempt at being organized), so they’re on my desk, plus a few sheets of paper I tore out but haven’t thrown away yet. Credit cards. A bottle of lotion. A microphone, for when I get around to doing a podcast. My computer, which I adore (I’m a mac girl all the way), with framed photographs on either side. A black and white of my daughter when she was 4 months old. And a portrait of my father before he passed away. I have a strange attachment to both. I moved and for a few months couldn’t find the photo of my dad and I thought I was going to die. I had a similar reaction when my mother accidentally gave away my photo of my daughter to a family friend. Luckily I got them both back. They center me. It’s a bittersweet love, I think, which is generally the place that all my best writing comes from.

If you could have one super power what would it be?

Easy. Time travel.

3D Thick no reflection

BLURB

Naive and blinded by grief, Belinda “Pecan” Morrow agrees to marry the up-and-coming boxing sensation, Ricky Morrow. Her first daughter arrives within a year of the marriage and suddenly Pecan finds herself on the receiving end of Ricky’s violent temper. Scared for her life, she hunkers down in this marriage of convenience as the babies and fists keep coming. Will the abuse ever stop? Will Pecan and her girls live happily ever after?

How to Knock a Bravebird From Her Perch is poignant and hard-hitting. You will be touched by Pecan’s courage and resilience. If you love dynamic female leads and succinct yet poetic storytelling, this novel is for you.

Cover Reveal: An Element of Time by Bebe Knight

An-Element-fo-Time

“A vampire and a slayer walk into a bar… Sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, but for Veronica and Mackenzie, it’s the beginning of the rest of their lives… “

The world has seen its fair share of evil, but Veronica Chase had no idea such monsters truly existed. Werewolves, poltergeists, witches… even vampires. Ignorance was bliss. But her reality was crushed on that horrid day her family was taken away from her. Now, Veronica has devoted her entire life to hunting those very creatures, searching for the werewolf pack that murdered her parents in hopes of finding her abducted sister. Nothing will get in her way of settling the score for the hand she was unjustly dealt. That is until her newest assignment brings her to her knees.

After one hundred and eight years on earth, Mackenzie Jones thought he had seen it all. With the exception of daylight of course, but that’s what comes with the territory being a vampire and all. Perpetually damned to live his life as a bartender in the shadows of the night, nothing has sparked his interest lately. Just once he wished something exciting would happen in his mundane life. Little did he know, his wish was about to come true. Walking through the door to his bar, and into his heart, Mackenzie allows love to take the wheel for the first time. There’s just one slight problem. She’s there to kill him.

EXCERPT

The delectable scent of meat searing on the grill hit his senses as he made his way into the kitchen. Daniela was making his favorite meal; filet mignon. Mackenzie hadn’t realized how long he’d gone without food until now; his stomach growled in response to the sizzling steak, ready to eat it raw if he had to. Daniela turned off the blender and poured the concoction into some glasses.

“I thought this might cheer you up,” Daniela said, handing a glass to Mackenzie. “Drink up!” Her attention went back to the blender as she sang, “You put the lime in the coconut, and drink them both up.”

Daniela had a way of making all the troubles in the world just disappear, even if it was as simple as making his favorite meal or whipping up a tasty drink. Mackenzie sat at the head of the table and gulped down the contents in his cup. But for some reason, it didn’t work this time. He was still as depressed as he was before. Maybe even more so.

Smacking the glass down on the table a little harder than he intended, the crystal chimed delicately in response. One drop of blood from the Type O cocktail escaped the lip of the glass and started to slowly slide its way down to the base. Mackenzie stared at the liquid ruby and couldn’t help but image it being the warm blood of a lover, descending down her neck after a fresh bite. His fangs released in response. How he longed to hold a woman with soft, beautiful skin in his arms. Maybe Daniela was right, maybe he did need a companion. Instead, the opaque crystal goblet sat lifelessly in his palm. He picked up the glass and slowly licked the droplet in one upward flick of the tongue. The action, as harmless as it was, opened a flood gate of instincts Mackenzie had to try to repress; he had to push back into the coffin where he stashed them years ago.

“You okay?” Daniela asked, sitting down next to him. “You look a little pale, like you’re going to be sick.”

“Of course I’m pale. I’m a vampire.” Mackenzie smiled, showing off his protracted fangs. Daniela chuckled in response and went back to finishing the meal.

Lucky for him, she bought his lame excuse when in actuality he was scared. Scared that his vampire nature would spring to life and drown him in blood lust for all the years he suppressed the urge. He barely knew what it was like to be a vampire, but his instincts were rushing back to him. Now, after visualizing that tantalizing temptation, he had to try not to be one again.

Shit, Mackenzie thought.

The Lady of the Pier – The Ebb is a quarter-finalist in the ABNA contest!

LADY OF PIER EBB 533x800

Hot from the press! My upcoming novel, “The Lady of the Pier – The Ebb” is now a quarter-finalist in the Amazon Breakthough Novel Award (ABNA) contest in the category Romance!

The next stage is the semi finals. The novels that’ll make it to the finals will be announced in June. Even if my book doesn’t make the list of 5 out of the current 100 in its category, the joy I am feeling cannot possibly be lost. It has already turned into the precious steel of determination for me to carry on, no matter the adversity.

Thank you all for your wonderful support and especially to my author friend & precious ‘guardian angel’, MM Jaye. If it weren’t for your friendship and encouragement honey, I wasn’t even going to enter ABNA! Thank you for this ecstatic feeling in my heart!

Easter Celebrations in Corfu, Greece: A unique experience!

IslBG

Easter in Greece is a special time of the year. Unlike the rest of the world that favors Christmas and the New Year in this respect, the Greeks seem to be in waiting for Easter all year round for a real celebration. And how can it not be so with so many festivities and delicacies in store? Wherever in Greece you may be, the evening of Good Friday will find you outside a church holding a brown candle, waiting to follow the Epitaph procession around the streets. As you walk with your lit candle in the semi-darkness, you cannot help but participate with piety and respectful silence as this ritual commemorates the death of Jesus and His placing in the tomb. The following day of course carries a message of joy and rebirth. At midnight on Easter Saturday, holding a white candle this time, you return to the same churchyard, in time to share the joyful message of Resurrection as fireworks light up the sky.

Indeed, wherever you are in Greece, Easter is a celebration of stark noise and bright lights. There is a multitude of places around the country, which are famous for special local customs. Yet, there is one part of Greece that stands out with magnificence. The island of Corfu overflows with tourists for its special Easter celebrations on a yearly basis. Crowds gather repeatedly at the historic town center with its large square (the largest in the Balkans). First, they join in at the numerous Epitaph processions around town on the evening of Good Friday.

corfu-easter-music

Next, there is the major procession on the morning of Easter Saturday around 9 am. Its feel and character is sorrowful. You stand in a crowd on the sidewalk to watch a multitude of local schools, boy scout groups and philharmonic orchestras pass by and if you are not in the know, you have no idea what it is that the locals keep whispering to each other about. Their eyes are seeking out the “Old” philharmonic of the town. They are waiting with baited breath for the first notes of  “Amleto”  that only this philharmonic has the honorary right to play exclusively. “Amleto” (Hamlet) is from Faccio’s opera and it is a soulful piece of music that is greatly loved by the locals. As the mournful notes finally rise up into the crisp Corfiot air in loud crescendos, there is not one dry eye left among the locals who await these moments all year round as a special treat. The procession ends with church banners and the gilt casket of the preserved body of St Spyridon; the patron saint of Corfu.

But the sadness of the hour does not last long. Unlike the rest of Greece, Corfu doesn’t have to wait till midnight on Easter Saturday in order to change its mood to one of excitement and happiness. As spectacular as the firework display is here at midnight, it fades in comparison to the celebration of ‘First Resurrection’ that takes place only an hour or so after the end of the procession. Crowds gather at the edge of the square by Liston (an arched street that was modeled after Rue Rivoli in Paris and which was made by the French during their occupation of the island).

413787_600736079954065_1212067907_o

Hoards of both tourists and locals clear the streets and stand under balconies or at the square, away from the buildings. The locals come out on their balconies all over  town and at the strike of eleven throw big pots (botides) to the ground, making a loud crashing noise. The custom is very old and it is believed that it signifies the noise during the Resurrection of Jesus. The crowds gawp, gasp and cheer and the atmosphere is electric. If you haven’t experienced it, you cannot imagine it and for those who have, it is still difficult to put it into words. It kindles within a uniquely heightened emotion that leaves you breathless and ecstatic. You feel the most joyful you’ve ever felt and when it’s all over, you find yourself compelled to go to the street, pick up a shard of ceramic and take it home with you for good luck.

Greek-Easter-3

Every year, if I can’t be in Corfu, I sit in solitude for a few minutes to listen to Amleto in the morning of Good Saturday. This year I thought I’d share it with you.

May its sadness stir the same kind of emotion in your hearts as it does in mine. I believe it makes the joy of Resurrection that follows feel even more special and real by comparison.

Wherever you may be this Easter, have a great celebration and KALO PASCHA!

Fellow traveler, a word of advice! Before you visit Greece for Easter, make sure to check the date of Orthodox Easter for that year as it coincides with Catholic Easter only once every few years!

Criss lives in a special kind of prison. He can see and hear everything around the world. Yet a restrictor mesh restrains his reach and keeps him cooperative. His creator, Dr. Jessica Tallette, believes his special abilities offer great promise for humanity. But she fears the consequences of freeing him, because Criss, a sentient artificial intelligence with the intellect of a thousand humans, is too powerful to control.

Guided by her scientific training, Tallette works cautiously with Criss. That is, until the Kardish, an otherwise peaceful race of alien traders, announce they want him for themselves. With technologies superior to Earth’s, the Kardish express their desires with ominous undertones.

The Union of Nations is funding Tallete’s artificial intelligence research and she turns to them for help. Sid, a special agent charged with leading the response, decides Earth’s greatest weapon is the very AI the aliens intend to possess. But what happens when an irresistible force meets an immovable object? And what is humanity’s role if an interstellar battle among titans starts to rage?

Crystal Deception Tour Button

Hello Doug and welcome to my blog!

Thank you Effrosyni, it’s a pleasure to be here!

I must say, your book sounds fantastic! What has inspired you to write it?

I was interested in finding a new creative outlet in my life and started pursuing a handful of projects. Over a period of months, I’d found I’d stopped working on every one of them except creative writing. I sought to write a book I would enjoy reading. My hope is that Crystal Deception appeals to anyone who likes a fast-paced, action-adventure story with great characters, a science tech theme, and a plot with surprises.

What was the first thing you ever wrote and how old were you then?

I wrote my first novel, Mr. Sombom and His Robots, in fourth grade as a class project. The book had a hard cover, a title page, chapters, illustrations—it was quite official. I think it’s now in a box somewhere in my basement. But clearly, I was destined from an early age to write science fiction, and it only took another four and half decades for my destiny to fulfill.

Any hobbies or interests that you enjoy in your spare time?

Writing is my hobby, and I spend most of my spare time working on my next book. I’m on the engineering faculty at the University of Connecticut and am founder of a tech startup company. The combination of these activities makes for a very full work week. My writing is my creative outlet, and I spend twenty five hours per week sitting at home in my comfy chair with my laptop on my knees writing Crystal Conquest, my next book. For exercise, I walk through the streets of my neighborhood during the week. On the weekends, I enjoy the day with a hike, kayaking, or some other active recreation.

Do you see yourself in any of your characters or do any of them have traits you wish you had?

Various characters in Crystal Deception display behaviors that make them seem confident, brilliant, insightful, personable, creative, and loyal. This is not a single character, but a list of positive traits pulled from several roles. I like these traits and would be proud if others saw any of them in me. The book also has characters who show behaviors that are petty, antagonistic, brutish, and unethical. I work hard not to display these behaviors in my daily life.

What are you working on at the moment? Tell us a little about your current project(s).

I’m working on Crystal Conquest, the second book in the Crystal series. I’m well past the half-way point and am targeting a release date of November of 2014.

Do you have any advice for other indie authors?

I lurked on the http://www.reddit.com/r/writing forum while I was working on Crystal Deception. The forum has changed a bit since then, but the most helpful advice at the time was posted by Michael J. Sullivan. He moderates http://www.reddit.com/r/write2publish now, and many of those posts are summarized on the right hand side of write2publish under the heading Popular Post Links. I recommend these as “must reads” for those starting out. His contributions still help me as I wrestle to understand the world of self-publishing.

Tell us about your website/blog. What will readers find there?

My website, http://www.crystalseries.com, provides book and author blurbs, links to reviews, and serves as the nexus for my social media. Visitors can read a bit about me and the Crystal book series, and find links to my Twitter, Facebook, Goodreads, and Amazon pages. Each of those sites offers different content. I invite your blog readers to visit and explore!

What were your most and least favourite subjects in school?

I was fortunate in that school was easy for me. In high school, math and science were fun. History and English subjects were a bit harder because they required more memory than logic. Foreign languages presented the greatest difficulty. I studied a fair amount to learn Spanish and French, but I don’t have an ear for languages and never used either enough for them to take hold. I spent nine years in college and decided I’d had enough after I earned a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Colorado. Now my life is spent teaching and mentoring college students, and I enjoy it immensely.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learnt so far in life the hard way?

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards put it into words for me. “You can’t always get what you want. But if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need.”

As a young child, Doug stood on a Florida beach and watched an Apollo spacecraft climb the sky on its mission to the moon. He thrilled at the sight of the pillar of flames pushing the rocket upward. And then the thunderous roar washed over him, and shook his body and soul.

Since then, he has explored life as an educator and entrepreneur. He enjoys telling inventive tales, mentoring driven individuals, and everything sci-tech.

In his new book, Crystal Deception, Doug swirls his creative imagination with his life experiences to craft a science fiction action-adventure story with engaging characters and a plot line with surprises.

He lives in Connecticut with his wonderful wife and with pictures of his son, who is off somewhere in the world creating adventures of his own…

50 Self-Published Books Worth Reading by Indie Author Land

athena,goddess,greekmyth,greekmythology,mythology,painting-f2d63097113a0f9d32438e42a23e59fd_h

Indie Author Land are currently accepting nominations from readers in order to announce the “50 Self-Published Books Worth Reading”. This competition closes on April 6th and so far, the site has received just under 5,000 votes.

I am as always an optimist and therefore, keep my hopes up for “The Necklace of Goddess Athena” making it on this list! If you feel inclined to support this fantasy adventure that has reached Amazon’s Nr. 1 in Mythology, please take a minute to nominate it but kindly note:

I do not expect fellow authors to vote for my novel as it makes sense for them to promote their own published books. In this sense, this post serves three other purposes only:

a) To inform fellow authors as to get fans to nominate their books.

b) To inform readers as to give them the opportunity to spread the word for any books truly worth reading (and my hope here is that obviously my own book will get a vote or two in the process!)

c) Last but not least: To promote David Njoku – a dedicated professional who runs Indie Author Land and offers a great (and free!) service to self-published authors. Not only does he give them the opportunity to have an interview on his site but he also promotes them (on his site and on Twitter) whenever the books are discounted or free.  The only thing you are expected to do in return is to grab one of the badges on his site and display it permanently on your website/blog.

This in itself is a means to pay it forward as by promoting David’s site, you are offering fellow authors information on an excellent resource!
