A Mile Apart by Sarah Jae Foster

Today, I’m happy to present another post by the awesome book tour organizer, Fabulosity Reads. Take a look at this inspiring romance that’s set in the Wild West and make sure to take a chance on the raffle at the end, as to win some goodies!

BOOK SYNOPSIS

Only one thing stands between her and the man she loves…gold

Eden Montgomery arrived in the lawless territory of Whistle Creek as a newlywed, but she quickly lost her husband to his mistress…gold, and the claim he called The Golden Angel. When a premature blast at the cave killed her husband, and took the life of her unborn baby, Eden closed the mine…for good. Now she runs the local supply store, and in her bitterness, looks down on the men who shirk familial responsibilities in pursuit of something as meaningless as gold.

Joseph Benton knows the crime, filth and disease of a mining camp is no place for a child. So when his young son Christopher suddenly arrives at his tent, he turns to Eden Montgomery to care for the boy. But the uppity and righteous Eden refuses. Joseph is shocked at what he thinks is her lack of maternal instinct. Now he’s torn between his need to strike gold…and his desire to be a father.

When a ruthless speculator encroaches on the camp, threatening Joseph and the other miners, Eden knows she must do the one thing she vowed never to do…for the one man she vowed never to love.

BOOK EXCERPT

It took several moments for Joseph to comprehend not only a female’s voice in the camp, but one calling out a Mr. Benton. By the time he got his bearings on the notion, his name had been called three times. Intrigued, he turned toward the whimsical voice and said with caution and curiosity, “I’m Joseph.”

In an instant, his heart fell like a stone as his eyes went from the shopkeeper to the little person at her side. Surely, his mind was playing with him and being cruel. It wouldn’t be the first time lack of nutrition did things to his head. But the apparition continued to move toward him. Then he heard a frightful word come from the boy.

“Pa!”

He nearly choked and staggered backward. Questions assaulted him. Where was Katherine? Francis? Why is the storeowner frowning at him like she wanted to hurt him? And definitely, the man with her looked like he would carry out the deed.

“Christopher?”

The woman gave his son a small nudge forward.

Christopher ran, promptly wrapping his arms around his thighs. Joseph threw a confused glance at the woman, while planting his palm on top of his son’s familiar head. Before he could help it, he flung himself down and held on tight, likely to never let go. “I don’t understand, son. I was going to come home to you—why did you come?”

The woman emitted a sound of pity and Joseph looked up to see her turn away. Was she crying? Alarm shot through him. “Christopher, where’s your ma?”

“She’s gone and died, Pa. Her and Baby Nell.”

Baby Nell? Who was Baby Nell? He sat hunched on his heels, unable to speak, and buried his face into his hands. What had he done?

He became aware that the rest of the camp was now at a standstill—a woman and child coming into their midst was highly unnatural. Now all attention was on him and he didn’t like it. Imploringly, he pierced the woman with a look as she began walking away with the man.

He found his voice and choked out, “Wait!”

An Interview with David Litwack, Author of Along the Watchtower

Today, I’m pleased to welcome David Litwack, fantasy author of Along the Watchtower. David is touring with Masquerade Tours and comes bearing gifts, so make sure to enter the raffle at the end of the post. But first, join me as I ask him a few questions to find out more about him and his book.

Along the Watchtower Thumb

Title: Along the Watchtower
Author: David Litwack
Publication Date: June 13, 2013
Genre: Contemporary Fantasy

Synopsis

A Tragic Warrior Lost in Two Worlds…

The war in Iraq ended for Lieutenant Freddie Williams when an IED explosion left his mind and body shattered. Once he was a skilled gamer and expert in virtual warfare. Now he’s a broken warrior, emerging from a medically induced coma to discover he’s inhabiting two separate realities. The first is his waking world of pain, family trials, and remorse—and slow rehabilitation through the tender care of Becky, his physical therapist. The second is a dark fantasy realm of quests, demons, and magic that Freddie enters when he sleeps.

In his dreams he is Frederick, Prince of Stormwind, who must make sense of his horrific visions in order to save his embattled kingdom from the monstrous Horde. His only solace awaits him in the royal gardens, where the gentle words of the beautiful gardener, Rebecca, calm the storms in his soul. While in the conscious world, the severely wounded vet faces a strangely similar and equally perilous mission—a journey along a dark road haunted by demons of guilt and memory—and letting patient, loving Becky into his damaged and shuttered heart may be his only way back from Hell.

Hello David, and welcome to my blog!

Thank you Fros, I’m very happy to be here.

What has inspired you to write this book?

I’ve always been fascinated by how our view of reality is subjective, how each of us brings our own experiences and biases into play. But when we’re ripped from our normal lives and placed in extreme circumstances, our reality becomes fragmented. Such is the case with hospitals and war. A couple of years ago, I became engrossed in the online game, World of Warcraft, thanks to my son. I’m on the east coast and he’s on the west, so we’d meet every Wednesday evening in the virtual world of Azeroth, where our avatars would go on quests together. I was struck by how immersed I became in the mood of the game as we wandered through castles and crypts, solving riddles and vanquishing demons. For a short period of time, I could totally buy into the alternate reality. The gaming experience has a dream-like quality to it. And I began to wonder: how would this experience affect the dreams of someone whose reality has been fragmented by the trauma of war? These concepts—war, hospitals, and the fantasy world of online gaming—came together in Along the Watchtower.

Wow, the book sounds amazing! What other writing have you done? Anything else published?

I’ve had two other novels published. My first novel, There Comes a Prophet, is dystopian fiction. Unlike the latest batch of dystopians like The Hunger Games, it’s not about an oppressive dystopia, but rather one paved with good intentions. The word dystopia is derived from dysfunctional utopia—a world where idealists trying to make things better have made them horribly worse.  My most recent effort, The Daughter of the Sea and the Sky, just came out in May. It’s about a world divided between the Blessed Lands, a place of the spirit, and the Republic, whose people worship at the altar of reason. A mysterious nine-year-old girl from the Blessed Lands sails into the lives of a troubled couple in the Republic and changes everyone she meets. She reveals nothing about herself, other than to say she’s the daughter of the sea and the sky. But she harbors a secret wound she herself cannot heal. You can find out more about these on my website: http://www.davidlitwack.com

What are you working on at the moment? Tell us a little about your current project(s).

I’m working on a sequel to There Comes a Prophet. I hadn’t planned on writing a sequel, but the main characters, Orah and Nathaniel, told me their quest wasn’t complete and kept nagging me to finish their story. Now, I plan on making it a trilogy.

What genres do you read mostly and what are you reading now?

I like the various forms of speculative fiction because I’ve always been suspicious about absolute reality. Different cultures see the world so differently. We conveniently choose to construct a world view that suits us—at least until something challenges it. What better way to challenge our view of reality—and therefore enable the potential for change—than to invent new worlds and show how characters cope with them.

I just started Neil Gaiman’s Stardust. I’d previously read American Gods and thought it was wonderful.

Do you have any advice for other indie authors?

Follow the advice of Abraham Lincoln (no stranger to adversity): “Let no feeling of discouragement prey upon you, and in the end you are sure to succeed.”

Very wise! Are there any sites or writing tools that you find useful and wish to recommend?

Of course, I never start writing without Dictionary.com and Thesaurus. com open in my browser. Wikipedia is also invaluable. But googling almost anything can yield rich results. For my new book, the sequel to There Comes a Prophet, I needed to learn more about weaving and the workings of a manually driven loom (think eighteenth century). I found a YouTube video where a nice Scottish lady describes weaving in a detailed and charming way.

Another good tool when editing is Autocrit, which scans your prose and identifies stylistic weaknesses. It doesn’t fix problems for you, but it certainly highlights opportunities for improvement.

Thank you for sharing these tips, David.  I bet the authors among our readers will be very grateful. And I’ve used Autocrit, it’s truly fabulous. Tell us about your website/blog. What will readers find there?

My website is http://www.davidlitwack.com. My blog is a part of it. In addition to author information, it contains a lot of details about each of my three books (description, trailer, excerpt, review quotes), as well as an advanced look at my work in progress. I post a variety of topics on my blog—about my writing style, where I get my ideas, and what it’s like being an author.

What are the things in your life that you’re most grateful for?

My wife and my sons, and their good health and happiness.

Who is your favorite poet? Quote a couple of lines from your favorite poem.

A.E Houseman

“And since to look in things in bloom,

Fifty springs are little room,

About the woodlands I will go,

To see the cherry hung with snow.”

Thank you David for being here with us today!

Fros, thank you for this opportunity. It was a pleasure!

Copy of David Portrait
Bio

The urge to write first struck when working on a newsletter at a youth encampment in the woods of northern Maine. It may have been the night when lightning flashed at sunset followed by northern lights rippling after dark. Or maybe it was the newsletter’s editor, a girl with eyes the color of the ocean. But he was inspired to write about the blurry line between reality and the fantastic.

Using two fingers and lots of white-out, he religiously typed five pages a day throughout college and well into his twenties. Then life intervened. He paused to raise two sons and pursue a career, in the process becoming a well-known entrepreneur in the software industry, founding several successful companies. When he found time again to daydream, the urge to write returned. His novels include: There Comes a ProphetAlong the Watchtower, and the newly released The Daughter of the Sea and the Sky.

David and his wife split their time between Cape Cod, Florida and anywhere else that catches their fancy. He no longer limits himself to five pages a day and is thankful every keystroke for the invention of the word processor.

Book Blast: Paradise Coast by Renee Novelle

June is finally upon us,  and I thought this book cover from Masquerade Tours’ latest book blast will seem quite apt! Make sure to enter the raffle at the end of the post to win some goodies!

This isn’t your average happily ever after…

Publication Date: 4/30/2014

Genre: Contemporary Women’s Fiction, Satire

Welcome to Naples, Florida! Where the beaches are perfect and every day is a vacation. But in this small town paradise that serves as a playground for the rich and elite, not everything is as beautiful as it first appears on the surface.

Offering an irreverent, and often sarcastic, glimpse into all the sexy scandals that go on behind closed doors, Paradise Coast, delves into the shadows of another way of life and proves that money doesn’t always buy happiness. Following five couples as they navigate their way through love, expectations and revenge, this story explores how different personalities react when faced with unsavory realizations about their current states of affairs.

Authors Note: This is not a romance. There are no alpha heroes who swoop in to save the day, or brooding bad boys who are easily converted into marriage material. If that’s what you’re searching for, then keep looking. Inside these pages is an unparalleled drama with many happy endings, but not so many happily-ever-afters. At least, not in the traditional sense… It’s a story about quick-witted women who find creative ways of empowering themselves and rising above their conflicting situations.

Sand dollars and other wondrous treasures of the sea

little mermaids

I love the sea.

No secret there, seeing that I come from a family of islanders from all over Greece. My great-grandfathers hailed from the Ionian Sea (the islands of Corfu and Lefkada), the Aegean Sea (the island of Lemnos) and the Cretan Sea (Sfakia, in Crete).

I often like to say that all three Greek seas run in my veins and as such, I feel that I can’t live without it. I can’t remember life ever being more miserable than it was during the only time in my life that I lived far from salty water. It was a grisly year that I spent in the very center of England once, suffocating every minute.

Having said that, you can imagine how blissful I feel these days, having made a home for myself and my husband in a small, serene town on the surf, very close to Athens. Any sunny day all year round is a chance to hit the beach, whether it’s just for a walk during winter or for a cooling dip on a blistering, summer’s day.

During my visits to the local beach, I also like to pick seashells. I’ve always jumped at the chance to do this, and often display my findings around the house in glass bowls and shelves. I’ve acquired a large selection of really rare ones too over the years, from visits to secluded beaches on the island of Lemnos.

In our local beach, the seabed is rich with sea-urchin shells. Often in the summer, I dive to collect them, then make decorations by putting them through string as you can see in this picture.

140601_184449

With their soft colors in all possible shades of purple, pink and green, I used to think they are the prettiest things ever to some out of the sea; that is, until recently.

A couple of weeks ago, my Greek-American friend and amazing amateur photographer, Kathy Poulos Gregory, posted the following picture on Facebook that had me marveling, mesmerized. Apparently, she picked this beautiful selection of shells in a beach in California where she lives and even found that red plastic crab toy that I thought really made her  picture!

sand dollars

“What on earth are those amazing, round things?” I asked her. It turns out these are sand dollars (also called sea cookies in New Zealand) and they are a kind of sea urchin that burrows in the sand. I guess this makes them a distant cousin to the ones I collect in my part of the world!

A quick Google search yielded some more amazing pictures – sand dollars in purple shades, and also a certain variety that’s called ‘keyhole sand dollar’ thanks to the perforations it bears.

Keyhole_sand_dollar_01

I must say, having spent hours and hours of my sea-worshiping life picking shells of various kinds, I foolishly thought I’d seen it all, but it turns out the sea treasures of the world are much more wondrous than I imagined.

So until I see something even prettier than this, although I can’t imagine, the sand dollar is now the prize seashell for me! If I’m ever in the U.S., the Carribean or even Brazil, you guys know where I’ll be and what I’ll be looking for!

So what about you? Is there a certain kind of seashell that you find particularly beautiful? Do you perhaps pick them at your local beach and if so, where?

Cover Reveal: Beyond the Count by Margo Bond Collins

Today, I’m pleased to present to you another cover reveal from Fabulosity Reads, this time by the lovely and prolific fantasy writer, Margo Bond Collins.

Book Synopsis

Long before Dracula, vampires stalked the literary scene.

These early literary vampires are sometimes terrifying, at times melodramatic, and occasionally ridiculous, but they are always out for blood—and their vampiric descendants continue to fascinate and captivate us.

Beyond the Count is a collection of vampire stories, plays, and poems from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This collection gives students, scholars, and vampire aficionados the opportunity to examine works often long out of print and to contextualize the development of vampire legend beyond that most famous of literary Counts.

The magic paragraph that will get you more reviews!

Book-That-Sparkles-Wallpaper-HD

Yesterday, I came across a gem of a post and felt that I absolutely had to share! Like everyone else, I read the odd article that offers useful information about every possible aspect of writing and marketing.  Yet, the little treasure I unearthed yesterday, stands out because it contained a simple, yet pretty logical tip for a problem that’s been plaguing me for a while. Although “The Necklace of Goddess Athena” has been downloaded by just over 2,100 readers since March during its FREE promo days, it’s still displayed on Amazon with a humble total of 16 reviews.

And it’s not like it’s been badly received, seeing that all said 16 reviews are 5 stars! So why am I not getting more reviews? What is it that makes readers rush back to the e-store to voice their opinion about other books by the hundreds, but not for mine?

I’ve suspected for a while that the main reason is that the majority of readers don’t realize the importance of reviews or indeed, of word of mouth. One of my most fervent fans, a Greek-American girl who wrote to me on Facebook, told me among other things that she loved my book so much that she’s now reading it again from the beginning. The next time I checked on Amazon, I was surprised to see that she hadn’t written a review, as it was something I sort of expected from a reader as enthusiastic as she seemed to be. I asked her to do that for me politely, explaining to her that it would be very helpful to me. She responded immediately, prompting me just minutes later to go back on Amazon and read her comments, which got me another precious, 5 star review.

The specific episode made me realize that actually, readers need a little nudge: something that will explain to them that writing a review is an act of support to authors, and therefore something they really appreciate. Under this light, provided they’ve liked the book of course, they feel immediately motivated to oblige.

Which brings me to the amazing post that I started telling you about. Fellow author Jackie Weger, has published this  post on the brilliant site ChoosyBookWorm. It just might save the day for any of you who share my frustration on this matter.

Jackie’s tip is so simple, it’s almost unbelievable. It entails the mere addition of a tiny paragraph in the book, just under ‘THE END’.

Apparently, it works like a charm and I for one, intend to try it! Jackie’s post is highly informative – there are lots more interesting tips to look into!

While you’re on the ChoosyBookWorm site, make sure to check out their free promo opportunities!

So what’s the magic paragraph, I hear you say? Find out, here!

Poetry from The Lady of the Pier: Advice from the Moon

Today, I’d like to share with you one of the three poems that are featured in my upcoming novel, ‘The Lady of the Pier – The Ebb’. It is called ‘Advice from the Moon’. I wrote it in my 20s. Late one evening, I was sitting in my family house on the balcony, alone with my thoughts, admiring the night sky. It was a cloudy night but the moonlight shone strongly. It was such a beautiful site that it overwhelmed me. I went inside to fetch my notebook and wrote the whole poem in one sitting. I hope you will enjoy it.

moonlight_by_sea_by_touzenleesouichirou-d3ahz7v

ADVICE FROM THE MOON

Mother of tides / your magic word the sea abides

Healer of pain / look at my heart, the wretched, the slain.

Of gathering clouds you slide on the silk

Of worrying souls the bread and the milk

You are; as you were and always will be

I’m longing for truth, your face to see

I’m looking for answers, my dreams to come true

Will they from the clouds one day come through?

And then as She slid, majestically pale

Behind grey veils, so silky, so frail

She shone on my face and filled me with bliss

Then blew these words like a motherly kiss:

‘When morning should come

-Then whispered The Moon-

The Sun will awake and blind me too soon

He puts me to sleep with powerful rays

And blind I stumble throughout His days.

At night, I’m The Queen, The Mother, The Guide

But sometimes behind the clouds I should hide.

And if your keen eye should try to find me

Don’t blame the clouds that gather to hide me.

Hold on to your dreams and hang on still proud

I hear your pleas – you stare at the cloud.

I haven’t gone out; I’m still all around!

I hold all your dreams behind the cloud.

And as I emerge from silver grey lines

As clouds will then yield, as moonlight then shines

One day your dreams at last will be there

They’re already here my child;

As long as at clouds you solemnly stare…’

A short note of gratitude

Indie Author Land_rgb-01

Indie Author Land announced today the winning titles for the “50 Self-Published Books Worth Reading”.

Unfortunately, my novel “The Necklace of Goddess Athena” didn’t make the list.  Two other books of fellow authors that I had been rooting for, didn’t make it either; much to my surprise as they are both commercial hits, published by the innovative and very successful hybrid publisher, Booktrope.

Having said that, I guess it is all to be expected. There are thousands of published indie books out there and a great number of them are terrific ones that surely deserve some recognition. Putting things in perspective therefore, if anything, I’m still amazed that my debut novel even made it to the shortlist!

From this blog, I wish to congratulate the winners and I give myself a pat in the back for competing.

Last but not least, I wish to thank all of you who have supported “The Necklace” with your votes. You guys are the best!
