#IWSG: Do Major Life Events Affect Your Writing?

Time for our monthly post in The Insecure Writer's Support Group. If you've not heard of it before, check out the complete details by clicking here.

The purpose of the group is "to share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!"

This Month's Question: How do major life events affect your writing?

My Answer: Ugh.

Seriously. The current national events have made me not only lose writing time, but I've also lost sleep and peace of mind. People have become so mean lately. People I've known and respected for years are suddenly sharing opinions that have left me dumbfounded. I've had trouble verbalizing how I truly feel about it all. When I've tried to write about it, I've been at a loss. Then, another video aired. This time: mockery of a sexual assault victim.

Maybe, one day, I'll be better able to articulate how I feel about the current events happening in our nation. Right now, this is all I have to say:

RAINN (the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization) has tips regarding how to speak to and treat sexual assault victims. Mockery is NOT acceptable. Be sensitive and speak with kindness. You don't know what others have experienced in their lives. For more information, visit the RAINN website: https://www.rainn.org/

Maybe next week more writing will be accomplished. Maybe next week people will be nicer to each other. Maybe we can each strive to be the reason someone else smiles, today. Don't wait for next week.

STAR-CROSSED by Pintip DunnOctober 2, 2018Publisher: Entangled TeenISBN: 978-1633752412
Publisher's Description: Princess Vela's people are starving. Stranded on a planet that lacks food, Vela makes the ultimate sacrifice and becomes an Aegis for her people. Accepting a genetic modification that takes sixty years off her life, she can feed her colony via nutrition pills. But her best friend is still getting worse. And she's not the only one.

As tensions rise between Aegis and colonists, secrets and sabotage begin to threaten the future of the colony itself.Unless Vela is brave enough to save them all…

About the Author: Pintip Dunn is a New York Times bestselling author of young adult fiction. She graduated from Harvard University, magna cum laude, with an A.B., and received her J.D. at Yale Law School.
Her novel FORGET TOMORROW won the 2016 RWA RITA® for Best First Book, and SEIZE TODAY won the 2018 RITA for Best Young Adult Romance. Her books have been translated into four languages, and they have been nominated for the following awards: the Grand Prix del'Imaginaire; the Japanese Sakura Medal; the MASL Truman Award; the TomeSociety It list; and the Romantic Times Reviewers' Choice Award.
Her other titles include REMEMBER YESTERDAY, THE DARKEST LIE, GIRL ON THE VERGE, STAR-CROSSED, and MALICE.
She lives with her husband and children in Maryland.

My Review:
Star-Crossed by Pintip Dunn made me want to read more quickly to find out what was going to happen next, but it also made me want to read more slowly to make the story last longer.
I've heard so many great things about Pintip Dunn's writing -- I was excited to finally jump in and read a book of hers. Star-Crossed exceeded my expectations! Set on a futuristic planet with problems and conspiracies and new-found love, Star-Crossed has elements that will appeal to most fan bases. But if you enjoy sci-fi and/or romance and/or mysteries - pick up this book for sure!
With captivating characters, a finely-layered plot, and a sci-fi setting, Pintip Dunn's Star-Crossed captured my interest on the first page and held tight through the final page.
Some of my favorite lines from the story:
"This doesn't sound like my best friend. Gravity has never pulled so strongly on her words."
"He could give me the smallest look, or place the tiniest emphasis on a single word, and my nerves dart around like they're the flame to his flint."
"The tears poured out of me the way lava rushes from a volcano--fierce and unstoppable."
"The laughter bubbles inside me like carbonated soda, as if it was always there, waiting for the tab to be pulled."
"The next few hours pass like a swarm of bees--chaotic and fast, with one minute blending into the next. But once in a while, a moment lifts out of the fray and descends like an individual sting."
"Astana can't scream so we're doing it for her."
I highly recommend Star-Crossed by Pintip Dunn to all readers of all ages.

Where I Want to Be Right Now

My spirit craves the mountains, the rivers, and the trees. Writing in the outdoors with the breeze and the birds is invigorating, and I miss it! My husband and I are eager to go again before the snow falls, but there is so much smoke in the mountains from all the fires, I'm not sure we'll go. Until we can, I'll lift my spirits with pictures! :)

Book Review: SURFACE TENSION by Mike Mullin

SURFACE TENSION by Mike Mullin
May 8, 2018
Publisher: Tanglewood
ISBN: 978-1939100160

Description from the Publisher:

After witnessing an act of domestic terrorism while training on his bike, Jake is found near death, with a serious head injury and unable to remember the plane crash or the aftermath that landed him in the hospital.

A terrorist leader’s teenage daughter, Betsy, is sent to kill Jake and eliminate him as a possible witness. When Jake’s mother blames his head injury for his tales of attempted murder, he has to rely on his girlfriend, Laurissa, to help him escape the killers and the law enforcement agents convinced that Jake himself had a role in the crash.

About the Author:

Mike Mullin’s first job was scraping the gum off the undersides of desks at his high school. From there, things went steadily downhill. He almost got fired by the owner of a bookstore due to his poor taste in earrings. He worked at a place that showed slides of poopy diapers during lunch (it did cut down on the cafeteria budget). The hazing process at the next company included eating live termites raised by the resident entomologist, so that didn’t last long either. For a while Mike juggled bottles at a wine shop, sometimes to disastrous effect. Oh, and then there was the job where swarms of wasps occasionally tried to chase him off ladders. So he’s really glad this writing thing seems to be working out. Mike lives in Danville, Indiana with his wife and her three cats. His debut novel, Ashfall, was named one of the top five young adult novels of 2011 by National Public Radio, a Best Teen Book of 2011 by Kirkus Reviews, and a New Voices selection by the American Booksellers Association. My Review:

Surface Tension by Mike Mullin features dynamic characters fighting for their lives in a compelling plot of murder and mayhem.

There are many elements to praise about Surface Tension, including its interesting premise and well-told story. There were also a few things that made me scrunch my forehead in frustration. These included hard to believe elements in the plot line and character behaviors, forced dialogue, and a nonlinear timeline. A nonlinear timeline by itself is not an issue; however, in Surface Tension, when the point of view would shift from Jake to Betsy or vice versa, sometimes the story would jump backward in time, which often left me confused and forced me to read the passage again.

Some of my favorite lines from the book:

"It's not easy growing up with a memory instead of a mother." (page 52)

"I ride fast, trying to out-pedal all my doubts and fears." (page 138)

#IWSG: The Number One Pitfall Writers Should Avoid

Today is the first Wednesday of the month, which means it is time for The Insecure Writer's Support Group.

This month's question is: What pitfalls would you warn other writers to avoid on their publication journey?

My answer: The number one pitfall to avoid is submitting your manuscript (to agents, editors, or anywhere else) before it's polished and ready. Revision fatigue is a real thing, and sometimes as writers, we think we just need to be done with the freaking thing. But either take a break from it and come back with fresh eyes or take the time to have a new critique partner review it. Then revise it again. How do you know when it's done? You'll know, because bells will sound, angels will sing, and the heavens will open and pour money down upon you. Just kidding. There's no way to know for sure, but if you push through the revision fatigue, get another set of eyes on it, walk away from it for a while, and then make one more pass, chances are, your manuscript will be better because of it.

Book Review: THE CHEERLEADERS by Kara Thomas

Oh, this was a terrific murder mystery that had me engaged from page one with just the right amount of suspense and tight writing. Scroll down for my full review.

THE CHEERLEADERS by Kara Thomas
July 31, 2018
Delacorte Press (Random House)
ISBN-13: 978-1524718329

Description from the Publisher:
There are no more cheerleaders in the town of Sunnybrook.

First there was the car accident--two girls dead after hitting a tree on a rainy night. Not long after, the murders happened. Those two girls were killed by the man next door. The police shot him, so no one will ever know his reasons. Monica's sister was the last cheerleader to die. After her suicide, Sunnybrook High disbanded the cheer squad. No one wanted to be reminded of the girls they'd lost.

That was five years ago. Now the faculty and students at Sunnybrook High want to remember the lost cheerleaders. But for Monica, it's not that easy. She just wants to forget.

Only, Monica's world is starting to unravel. There are the letters in her stepdad's desk, an unearthed, years-old cell phone, a strange new friend at school. . . . Whatever happened five years ago isn't over. Some people in town know more than they're saying. And somehow, Monica is at the center of it all.

There are no more cheerleaders in Sunnybrook, but that doesn't mean anyone else is safe.

About the Author: Kara Thomas has written for everything from her high school newspaper to Warner Bros. Television. She is a true-crime addict who lives on Long Island with her husband and rescue cat. She is the author of The Darkest Corners, Little Monsters, and The Cheerleaders. To learn more about Kara and her books, visit her at kara-thomas.com or follow @karatwrites on Twitter and @kara_thomas on Instagram.

My Review:

THE CHEERLEADERS, by Kara Thomas, is a terrific murder mystery with just the right amount of intrigue on every page. Kara Thomas is a wonderful writer, engaging my imagination on page one and keeping my attention through the very last page.

As the fifth anniversary of the cheerleaders' deaths approaches, the main character, Monica, is determined to learn the truth, because Monica doesn't believe the stories that everyone else has accepted. She knows there has to be more behind how and why her older sister died.

Monica struggles to not only find the truth, but she also struggles to find her place in the world, making some questionable choices along the way.

Some of my favorite lines:

"The empty house has been the subject of my mother's bitching. All the house is doing is existing, not bothering anyone. It's exactly the type of thing that offends my mother."

"In my head, I break down the agonizing wait for Saturday. Twenty-four hours; nine class periods; one dance team practice; one awkward Friday family dinner at Ristegio's, the Italian restaurant in town; and one restless night's sleep. All hurdles to clear before I can talk to Daphne Furman."

"...computer club boys plagued by ill-fitting jeans and cafeteria pizza breath."

"I knew what we were doing was wrong, and I didn't care because I was ready to set my perfect life on fire and walk away while it burned."

I highly recommend THE CHEERLEADERS by Kara Thomas to anyone who enjoys a twisty murder mystery.
