Detective Pat hates the water. She’ll need to get over that if she is going to be able to investigate this case properly. Preferably before the rest of the department figures out her weakness. There is a killer out there to be caught. Somehow she’ll have to get past her block to find him.

Fair Warning — It Could Happen
October means Halloween, and Halloween means some great reads. Check out my Halloween Reads post. Even if you saw it last week, I’ve added a few new books for you to check out.

Fair Warning is book 3 of Michael Connelly’s Jack McEvoy series. I don’t think that I’ve read either of the previous two books, but there was enough backstory to understand the broad strokes of what had happened earlier in the series.
Jack is trying to track down who turns out to be a serial killer, who is using DNA databases in a way it was never meant to be used to target his victims. From the research that I have done on DNA and the consumer genetics industry for my books, Connelly hits the nail right on the head with privacy issues and the non-regulation of this industry.
Interestingly enough, the consumer watchdog news company that Jack McEvoy works for, Fair Warning, is a real company, which Connelly is on the board of. The Editor of the Fair Warning in real life is also a character in the book. Kind of cool.
I understood that Mattson and Sakai obviously knew more about the circumstances of Tina Portrero’s murder than I did. But the questions about what happened between us a year ago seemed overly important to them.

I am well into Deborah Harkness’s A Discovery of Witches, the first book in the All Souls Trilogy. I don’t think I’ve read anything else by this author, but I am certainly enjoying it.
A paranormal romantic suspense story about Diana, a witch with mysterious powers, and an ancient vampire. Well, you can guess what is going to happen. It is well-done, with lots of suspense and deep character building. It’s fun and mysterious, and I’m still trying to unwind all of the secrets and find out what is going on and how they are going to solve their problems.
Oh, and there has been some interesting DNA science thrown into the mix, which has been well-managed and presented. I love the mix of history, science, and fantasy.
A mild shock made me withdraw my fingers quickly, but not quickly enough. The tingling traveled up my arms, lifting my skin into tiny goose pimples, then spread across my shoulders tensing the muscles in my back and neck.

I just finished reading The Reversal, book #3 in the Lincoln Lawyer series by Michael Connelly. It’s always great to slip back into a familiar series and see old friends like Mickey Haller and Detective Bosch. Mickey Haller, normally counsel for the defense, crosses the aisle in this case to act as an independent prosecutor against a child killer who was freed after twenty-four years due to DNA evidence.
A great courtroom drama and police procedural wrapped up in one. Get your fix of both. Hang on tight, it’s a wild ride.
It should have made me feel good. It should have made me feel like I was part of something that was noble and right. But all I had was the bad feeling that I had crossed some sort of line within myself.
