Celebrating JRR Tolkien and His Artwork

“The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.”

J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born on January 3, 1892. I won’t write some kind of biography here. I won’t write about how his work influenced modern fantasy and the writing world. There are articles, online communities, films, and books upon books dedicated to those topics.

I will, however, share a few images of his original artwork. He was a brilliant artist, and these are a few of my favorite pieces that I’ve seen.

Starting when I was very little, my dad, a huge Tolkien fan, read me The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings trilogy from start to finish several times. I don’t remember the times he read them to me as a baby when I wouldn’t sleep. I do remember him reading me a chapter at a time before bed when I was a little older, and him explaining everything from what the long words meant to why people do evil things and why others must stand against them even when it seems futile.

I do remember the magic of feeling like there was a whole, fully realized universe that I could catch glimpses of, or even visit, through the pages.

Thank you for the magic, J.R.R. Tolkien.

Allison Dickson: Jennifer Greene first approached me about the possibility of re-releasing a silly vampire book I’d written and released a number of years ago called Scarlet Letters: The Tale of the Vampire Mailman. Because it had been []

That least understood and most variable of personae, The Witch, remains a source of fascination and fear the world over.

They walk among us, plying their skills, stealing our hearts -and perhaps other pieces of us- for purposes known only to them.

In this boiling brew, you’ll taste not only eye of newt and wing of bat, but wrathful scorn, summoned spirits, and pierced veils that bleed wonders dark and delicious.

Straddle the whisk and travel the worlds of Witchcraft, Voodoo and eleven worlds ‘twixt. But be careful not to fall…in love or into the abyss.

Come inside, out of the damp dusk, out from under that ominous black cloud. I want you to meet someone.

Set down your treat bag, take off that stuffy mask. I’d like to introduce Jack.

Yes, that Jack, the legend behind the leering lanterns, like the one burning just outside.

His story is the first treat of the night, to prepare the pallet for the rest.

The Ladies of Horror Flash Project – Stacey Turner

Ileana’s Return

Dedicated to Rob M. Miller

by Stacey Turner

The Castle of my childhood now gray and crumbling,

but still standing on that stony cliff

beside the churning waters of an angry sea.

The scene familiar—and yet,

the damage wreaked by time

rendering its appearance still more sinister.

How long since here I last stood?

Four-score, a hundred, perhaps more years.

I’ve stayed away, unwilling, unable to face the past.
A tour is just beginning, the last one tonight.

I follow inside, and through halls, suffocating with memories.
