Wattpad Cover Contest for Saving My Heart

SavingMyHeartcvr4

Saving My Heart is getting a new cover. Share the love at: Wattpad/users/marilynvix.

Hi everyone! Some of you know that I’ve been writing on Wattpad for almost 2 years now. I can’t believe it. I signed up for Wattpad just before having massive heart failure (I almost died), and it was my saving grace while I couldn’t move and get off the couch for 3 months. I ended up writing a new adult contemporary novel, and I’ve decided to perk interest in it again by having a cover design contest.

So, I’m starting a contest to design the new cover for “Saving My Heart”. I thought who would be the best designer but a fan of the book. I’m setting the deadline for April 15. That should give everyone a good month to design their best. I’m looking for a cover that represents the story, genre, theme, and the characters. I do like to see the main characters, Julie and Peter on the front. But I’m open to other interpretations. I’d love to see ideas and inspirations you get from the story included in the cover. Go for it! Impress me!

What do you win? CREDIT. I will list you as the cover designer and use your design as the cover for “Saving My Heart”. Plus, I will rename a character in the story, Patty, Julie’s friend, after you. So, you get a character named after your first name in “Saving My Heart”. (Note: Just your first name will be used, or name of your choosing. I won’t use your last name, since I’m creating a fictional character.) **Use of the cover will be on Wattpad, and with permission, on my blog to use a link. I’ll be posting about this on my blog too. So, I want to display the winner there as well.

If you are interested, message me or post your email in the comments, and I’ll tell you where to send you’re cover design. Plus, if you have any questions, please post a comment. I want this to be fun and a challenge, but a way to include my followers in the process on Wattpad and on my blog. It’s because of you that “Saving Your Heart” was finished. You always keep me going.

DEADLINE: April 15, 2016

*I’ll announce finalists on Monday, April 18, 2016. The winner will be announced Friday, April 22, 2016.

Thanks for making the writing experience super awesome. All of my fans keep me going.

I’m looking forward to your entry. Happy designing! -Marilyn

Pitching At A Writing Conference Doesn’t Have To Be Scary

writerstumpedThere will be a time that you say to yourself, it’s done. It’s time to find an agent, an editor, someone to get this manuscript breathing and out there. That’s when it’s time to hit the conference scene. That’s when you inevitable turn your eyes to the dreaded pitch. There are books, workshops, on-line courses on how to write a pitch. You can take them and pull your hair out just getting it right, but when it comes down to it, all you need is a simple formula. Setting-Characters-What’s at stake!

I’ve just returned from the San Francisco Writers Conference with a fantastic, positive journey. I’m going to give you some background on what happened leading up so you can prepare for your next conference in the same way.

For some reason, after all of the courses and workshops, this formula stuck. It might be that I was really ready, manuscript in hand, for this moment. I think that really helped. The irony is that I’d finished two manuscripts and had two ready. I’d taken an on-line writing course through Writer’s Digest University a few weeks before the conference. I really worked on my query letters, synopsis, and 10 pages to have them ready for the conference. What was really helpful was the members of the class all formed a private writer’s group on Facebook for the critique of queries and pitches. They were giving me feedback, and cheering me on during the conference. There is nothing better than getting support from fellow writers.

That brings me to my next point. My fellow writers at the conference all were in the similar knowledge of whether our pitch was good or not. We formed a critique group at dinner and slowly over a bottle of wine, our pitch session turned into a helpful drinking game. We started with everyone taking a drink, and then a person would pitch. Then, everyone drinks passing the pitch to the the next person topping off their glass. Thus, the process of drink, pitch, drink, pitch, drink, pitch created one of the best critique sessions I’ve experienced in tightening my pitch. When we were done, I went back to the hotel room (it was only 11 pm), and spent an hour tightening my pitch from the feedback.

Here’s what I got back: You need to let all the extra details fall away. I know you want to share all the details that make your story great. The only thing that really matters though for the pitch is this: Setting(Time and place), Characters(explain main characters), and what is at stake. You don’t need anything else. Let EVERYTHING ELSE fall away and you’ll have the perfect pitch.

I don’t know whether it was the feedback, the alcohol, or all the info at the workshops that day, but for some reason it all clicked in my head. The next evening I tried going to get more help to fine tune from author coaches in an evening of “Ask the Pros”. This lead me to practice pitching to two editors that both loved it. One editor even said it was the perfect pitch. The next day at the pitchathon to agents, I had five agents give me their card to send them a query and first 10 pages.

Why is it perfect? Well, it had several parts. The title of the manuscript is followed by the genre. Next, I had a tagline, explaining it in one sentence. I followed that with comparitive books or movies to my manuscript (also known as comps.) The last part is a paragraph that contains the setting/characters/what’s at stake.

Here is my pitch that I used at the conference for an example:

Everything For Love: A Time Travel Erotic Romance

One women’s sexual journey transcends space and time.

“The Time Traveler’s Wife” meets “Lady of Devices”

Deidre Thomson is a timeanaut studying artists in the early 20th century that powers her time device by sex. A mysterious stranger follows her from Paris 1899 to London 1914. He saves her form being killed, which changes the timeline. The man, Max, reveals he’s been sent by the Time Counsel to save her. Max helps Deidre on assignment. But he is scretly in love with her, and defied the Time Counsel to save her. The timeline change brings Deidre’s past love back to life, and she must choose between the two men she loves.

The other thing that was really helpful was downloading a free note app to my phone, and writing my pitches into it. I also created a separate note listing all the agents I wished to approach with each manuscript. I even took notes on what the agents said during our meeting during the pitch session on the app. Everything was easily organized on my phone, and that really kept my nerves down.

In summary I’d suggest using the pitch formula I described, write out your pitch onto your phone with a note app, and practicing it with lots of different people before and during the conference. You’ll change and hone it until it’s time to pitch. It will only getting better this way, and you’ll increase your confidence the more you read it out loud to others.

If you’re off to a conference, good luck to you. Remain calm, you’ve got this. If your still writing the manuscript, wait until you’re done to pitch. Most agents and editors want it done first before they can do anything with it. It’s taken me 2 1/2 years to write mine. It will take time. The whole writing process does. Bookmark this post and use it as a reference. As always, keep writing!

So, it’s not surprising my first romantic erotic short collaboration involved a cat. Lynda loved the idea, and took over all the hot scenes. It’s sizzling folks. And of course, a cat is the connecting point for the two main characters.

Audiobook for Beware of Warlocks Box Set Released

It’s here. The audiobook of the Beware of Warlocks series is finally out! It was a joy working with my narrator/producer on ACX.com, Nastasia Lacayo. She had the right voice that fits Cat perfectly. The last few months preparing and getting this ready for you all has been grueling. But it is finally here. After two years of writing the novelettes and editing the box set, it’s available. The work that goes into making a product of this sort is a learning and growing process. I’d like to thank everyone from my editor Shelley Hollaway, to my beta readers Lisa Frogjourney and Lady Trish MacDonald for all of the work that has turned this into a fabulous paranormal romance series. There is more to come too.cropped-beware-of-warlocks-box-set-3d.jpg

steamtiffNo accident the setting is in Vegas for this series. I love to play there! I just got back from a Steampunk conference there and I’m going back in April for a writing conference. Las Vegas keeps calling me back. I can’t stay away. I’m so looking forward to creating more adventures for Cat and her friend Cassandra. I’m working on the next series, Beware of Vampires. Cassandra is the main character, with Cat as her wingwoman. It’s going to take a witch’s help to get Cassandra out of the trouble she’s getting in.

Join me tomorrow, Feb. 3, on Facebook for the big party. Would love to see you there.

Wattpad Promo Opportunity: Wattpad Block Party Winter Edition II

Wattpad Block Party Winter Edition

The Wattpad Block Party runs Feb. 1-29 with over 100 authors.

I’ve talked about some of the fun things I’ve done on Wattpad over the last year. From writing a new adult novel to participating in the different Wattpad writing contests, I’ve found there is no end to things you can do on Wattpad to support your writing. Now, I’ve found a great way to engage your followers once you’ve got some projects up for them to read. It’s an author organized promotional event. I’m currently participating in the Wattpad Block Party. Here’s how it works.

The Wattpad Block Party is an author event that is run by @KellyAnneBlount. She’s put together a fabulous way to promote yourself on Wattpad and beyond. For the entire month of February, authors will be posting daily in the Wattpad Block Party interviews, blog posts, behind the scenes, and all sorts of fun info to engage readers on Wattpad. There are over 100 authors involved, and even a ton of giveaways. The prizes range from being named after a character in a chapter, receiving a critique on Wattpad, having a chapter dedicated to you, to ebooks from different authors.

Of course, to get this involved you need content. So, it’s best to find these author events after you’ve got some stories up on Wattpad. But once you get some content up, it’s great to participate in these kinds of author organized parties.

If you’d like to check out the event, here is the link. All the information is posted in a book on Wattpad. Events run every 6 months. I had to sign up a while back, and I’m very excited to be part of this one. I’ve done other author promos with authors from my writing board, Kboards.com, even organizing blog tours of my own. I know they can be a lot of fun, and the cross pollination of readers is a win win for everyone involved. Readers get to discover more authors, and the authors gain more followers.

Welcome to the last day of the 2015 Paranormal Romance Blog Tour. Today is the wrap up of all the fun with a sneak peak and other surprises from the participating authors. I’ll be giving a sneak peak from my current Time Travel Romance, Everything For Love. It’s also going to be one of my NaNoWriMo projects this year. I’m about half way through, and hope to write about 25K words to complete it. The other 25K to win NaNo will be for the next series in the Beware of Warlocks world that will involve Cassandra, Catherine’s mortal friend.

To help with my word goal and NaNo, I’m fundraising to sponsor myself for a ticket for the Night of Writing Dangerously on Nov. 15. It’s the special fundraising night for the website. It’s a Write-A-Thon dinner where everyone writes with a fabulous candy bar to help spur us towards our word count. Many people ring the bell of victory reaching the 50K at this event. I’m just happy to be able to make it. Of course, you’ll benefit from the writing that is done and that it supports the website and NaNo educational writing programs.

So, please consider a sponsorship. I’m giving away Beware of Warlocks swag with different levels of donation. LINK HERE TO THE NIGHT OF WRITING DANGEROUSLY SPONSOR PAGE!

Now, as promised, here is a sneak peek excerpt from Everything For Love:

**We find Deidre, the timenaut, in the middle of a shopping spree to get her to fit in with the new time period, 1914 London.

She directed the car to head over to the next dress shop. She wanted to get at least something purchased to insure she’ll make a splash at the next dinner. She looked out at the shops. They looked more deserted and shabby. People started to walk more on the street, with more wagons. Cars were less prevalent in this neighborhood.

Deidre noticed people starting to stop and look at her car more often. She leaned back in her seat, looking through the window, her blonde curls coming down out of her hat after the extensive fitting. She’d have to fix that later. She tried to tuck some back under the hat when the Napier pulled up at a shop.

It looked deserted. The pealing paint had the name Mercantile/Fabric, but everything appeared shut. It wasn’t the first time that information at been wrong on the GPS database. Some records weren’t as thorough as other time periods. She opened the door and got out to go to look at the windows.

She pressed up against the front window, and leaned to see in the shop. No lighting, with thick dust. It looked like it had been shut for some time. It was a shame. She was looking forward to wearing a famous designer. It would be a treat to see something in person than in a black and white jpeg.

Deidre heard a shuffle behind her and turned. Two men startled her as they walked up. They didn’t have suits and wore workers clothes that were disheveled. They were unshaven, and one was smoking a cigar. “Beg your pardon miss, but do you have a ‘Bob’ or two for some down and out folk like us. Been an awfully long time since we’ve had a meal.”

She held her purse with both hands, and stepped back. “I’m sorry. I don’t have any extra change really.”

“We’ll take what we need then.”

They came toward her, one grabbing her arm, as the other grabbed her purse. Deidre didn’t know what happened next except it seemed like a whirlwind of action. Another man came from the alley to the side, and jumped the man closest to him.

It gave her a chance to do a twist and pull the other man’s arm back until he begged for mercy. She’d only had to use the defense moves only once before, and turned to be ready for the new stranger. She turned to look at him, and was dazzled by his smile. It was him, the familiar stranger. The mysterious dark haired man looked focused and alert. He quickly dispatched the man she had in a lock, sending him spiraling to the dirt. The two men ran off quickly. He slapped his hands together. “We make a good team.”

Paranormal Romance Blog Tour Day 4: Author Interviews

Day 4 of the Paranormal Blog Tour: Author Interviews

Day 4 of the Paranormal Blog Tour: Author Interviews

Welcome to the fourth day of the Paranormal Romance Blog Tour. Today is Author Interview Day. I’ve got mini-interviews from several of the participating authors. They’re going to share some of their favorite Halloween moments, how they got writing ideas, and what inspired them.

J. A. Armtiage is the author of the Guardians of Light series.

J. A. Armtiage is the author of the Guardians of Light series.

First up: Author J. Armitage

How did you get the idea for your current book?
I’d always wanted to be a surrogate and one day I was travelling to London to meet the woman who I would eventually have a baby for. It was a long journey and I started musing how strange it was to have a baby for a total stranger. I then began to think about reasons for having a baby other than to be a mother. Endless Winter was born. (a year and a half later, the baby was also born:))

Who inspired you the most to become a writer?
I read a lot as a child. I read everything I could get my hands on. I think I read every Famous Five book there was. I carried on my love of reading into adulthood. One day I read a book that I really thought was bad. It was a best-seller. I figured that I could do better. Even though I’ve sold a lot less copies than this book, my ratings are higher. No – I’m not going to say which book it was.

What is your favorite Halloween memory?
I once dressed up as Delerium from Neil Gaiman’s Endless. I do love Neil Gaiman plus having multi-coloured hair was fun for the night

My second featured author is: Kessie Carroll

Kessie Carroll is the author of

Kessie Carroll is the author of “Malevolent”, a new take on the undead.

What inspirational advice would you give a new paranormal romancewriter?

Don’t write the genre unless you really like it, and you already read it a lot. There’s a lot of derivative tropes in this genre (especially in YA), and you want to produce fresh stories, not accidentally copy everybody else. Also, check out some urban fantasy, too. Lots and lots of romance there, and there’s quite a lot of crossover.

Who inspired you the most to become a writer?

My parents, the summer they revoked my Sega Genesis privileges. Ever the rebel, I sat down and began writing stories about the games I wasn’t getting to play.

As I grew out of fanfiction, my next inspiration was Diana Wynne Jones. She did things with fantasy I had never seen before, whether it was transforming a star into a dog (Dogsbody), pulling off the most amazing time travel plot ever (Archer’s Goon), or blowing my mind with seemingly-unrelated plots (The Merlin Conspiracy). I want to write books as awesome as hers.

What is your favorite Halloween memory?

One year, while trick or treating, my brother and I were greeted by a guy with a glass cage in his hands. Inside the cage were a couple of Reese’s with a tarantula sitting on them. “If you want some candy,” he said, “you’ll have to reach in and get them from Fang.”

My brother and I just stood there and stared in shock. This didn’t fit our trick or treating regimen.

Then his wife took pity on us and came out with the candy bowl. But as we were leaving, the guy called after us, “What’s the matter? It’s just a little old tarantula!”

Paranormal Romance Blog Tour Day 3: Book Review

Day 3 of the Paranormal Blog Tour: Book Review

Day 3 of the Paranormal Blog Tour: Book Review

Welcome to the third day of the Paranormal Romance Blog Tour. Today on all participating author sites, you will find an array of different PR books. We’ve done some book swapping to get an idea of what we’ve all been writing. I have to say, it’s been fun seeing what everyone is up to in the paranormal writing world.

I’ve been reading participating author K.M. Caroll’s book Malevolent (The Puzzle Box Series Book 1).  And I was definitely surprised on how much I liked it. Of course, the main character lives in the San Joaquin Valley in Southern California. I grew up in the Santa Clara Valley, now known as the Silicon Valley. Plus, Caroll’s take on the undead is a new angle than I’ve read in other books. It has a scientific perspective on magic, and how it may work. This, being a long time Trekkie, got my attention.

Libby, sick from valley fever for the last six months, decides to cheer herself up by watching the arrival of the bees in her father’s almond orchard. Enter Mal. A reclusive beekeeper with unique hives, brody personality, and weird of all, he has all the makings of a vampire. Unlike her boyfriend that she longs to break up with when she has strength, her friendship with Mal develops into more than mere passing relationship. It could save her life. With Mal’s lifegiving honey, she starts to regain strength but slowly realizes the dark secrets Mal is hiding from her. She is pulled into his world of the dark undead hoping that if all else fails, what she learns can save them both.

I really couldn’t put this book down. It was incredible new spin on the undead with death motes versus life motes, a new molecule that is magic in the physical world. Keeping the balance between them is the key. The relationship between Mal and Libby is tense since it eventually becomes a love triangle. Even the aspect of a religious undead creature still suffering from his curse, but can be turned to tears by simple verse was new to me. Christian and being undead was definitely new.

I really like the new elements K.M Carroll brought into Malevolent. I’m looking forward to see what she continue to do with this series.
