Guadalajara III
And, on to day 3, the last day of classes. Tons of food again, but this time I was really careful, and for the most part, just had a bite of each dish.

Enchiladas mineras – cheese filled tortillas that have been dipped in adobo and then flash fried in a pan, served over salad, and topped with browned potatoes and carrots, extra spicy pico de gallo, sour cream. Breakfast for the miners, apparently.

New ingredient to work with, in two forms. Maguey cactus “leaves” – from which, the outer sk...

Guadalajara II
We made so much food today in the second class of the trio…. Let’s start with the new ingredients:

Tomatillos. I’ve worked with them before, but not much.

Nopales – cactus pads. I’ve eaten them, but never worked with them.

Pork brains. I’ve worked with beef ones, but never pork.

Mamey. Never seen one, never eaten one, never worked with one. And we didn’t even use the fruit, which got stuck in the fridge for something else. We wanted the hueso, the “bone”, or inner part o...

Guadalajara I
I’ve reached a point in life, I’ve realized. There are only so many cities and towns and villages that I can visit and wander around the streets snapping photos of plazas and churches and statues and historic spots. Not a physical limit, though I suppose that exists, but an intellectual one, a spiritual one, an I’m just not as interested in all that as I once was one. My passion is food, drink, and cultural events that get the blood pumping. And so when Henry decided he was off to spend a mon...

Burgers in the Outfield
Not all the gourmet burgers of Buenos Aires are located in the touristy and expat areas stretching from San Telmo through Centro, Recoleta and on to Palermo. There are actually burgers further afield….

Now that’s a good looking burger. Unfortunately, it’s all looks. I’m at La Marguerite, a little café at 11 de Septiembre 1888, #2620, pretty much straddling the frontier between Belgrano and Nuñez. But there’s a niggling little thought coming to my forebrain – this is a solid, inch-thick burg...

Mexico, Coming Right Up!
I’m headed to the International Gastronomy Festival in Guadalajara, Mexico, the first week of March, followed by a week in Mexico City. All gastronomy, all the time. If I have any readers, friends, romans, countrymen, etc., who are or will be in either place, I’d love to meet up, hang out, eat, tour, see things. I’d love to find one or more traditional Mexican cooking classes that I could take in either or both places – preferably private classes, but that’s not a must – either with an amazin...

A Quartet of Wallet Drainers
Somehow or other, over the last few weeks, we’ve ended up hitting several rather more expensive spots in BA. One of those we were treated to, the other three – maybe it’s because of the sudden shift in the value of the peso, they seemed less expensive when I think of them in dollar terms. None of these are places that I haven’t been to and written at least a little about at some point in the past, but it never hurts to take another look, and maybe even do a little compare and contrast….

Salta, La Linda
Henry and I just spent a trio of days up in Salta and the area north of there, in the far northwest of the country. It’s the first time we’ve been there (other than passing nearby and along part of the same route when we went to Bolivia a decade ago). Our original intent was a trip to Cafayate, where we had a complimentary stay at one of the wineries lined up, but, when we started looking at the travel time involved between the two, and what lay in store, we decided to stay in Salta and explore from there. Video of the trip, with music.

A January in My Life
A friend challenged me to take a short video every day and create a little “collage” for a month. It was an interesting project, not one I plan to continue, but it created a cute little video of three-second clips that’s probably of no interest to anyone but me of moments in my life, January 2016.

New Openings, A World Apart
A duo of new spots that have opened up in Palermo. Different cuisines, different experiences. Life in the fast lane.
Not So Wild About the Lotus

I’d like to say that we were all excited here in the Asian food fan club when word came of the opening of a new Vietnamese restaurant… in Palermo… Wild Lotus, Malabia 1893, off the corner of Plaza Armenia. But the thing is, we never heard about it. It came up one day when a friend who lives nearby to there said he’d passed by it and it looked like...
