Blarg is not Romantic
It’s been a long time. Since I’ve last written, I’ve quit my soul-sucking day job, kept myself aloft with freelance work, and found myself another placement. I am excited about my new position: the atmosphere is lovely, the people are wonderful, the perks and benefits are amazing, I’ll make enough to support me and my stay-at-home house man, and I think I’ll be able to do the work well. Since freelance work kept me isolated before my keyboard, I’ll have to brush up on interpersonal skills, th...

Shadows, Larger than Life
Once, a friend of mine stated that he thought homophobia in stories featuring gay protagonists was overdone and had become trite. I had to disagree—even though it is featured frequently. But that idea did give me a lot to think about. In this blossoming of the LGBTQ civil rights movement, how pertinent is it, as a writer, to discuss the bigotry of what will, hopefully, soon be a bygone day?
However cliché it may seem to outsiders, these struggles are still pertinent to people in my daily life....

Highfell – Final Draft
I received the proofreader’s remarks on Thursday and spent most of the weekend carefully considering each and every comment — even doing a little additional research of my own. On Sunday, at six-thirty a.m., I started reading the novel aloud. I finished around 10:30 p.m. that night. I’m somewhat of a perfectionist, so always when I make something, whatever it is, I can see nothing but errors, what I could have done better, and it tears me up to let something go. But when I finished reading al...

Ulterior Motives
It was not with the noblest of intentions that I began to question the young gentleman who was kindly walking me home from the pub. As we passed over the River Cherwell’s bridge, I gazed up at the shadowy rounds of mistletoe in the trees and I asked him: Where exactly was he from in Germany? What did it look like there? Were there any interesting places to visit in his area? Was he intending to visit home over spring break?
Now, let me step back and explain to you what my ignoble intentions w...

Highfell Edits + Uncorrected Proof
I finished the final edits on Highfell earlier this week — on Tuesday, actually — and I’ve been recovering ever since. I know that I worked as hard as I could to get this manuscript in the best shape it could be in — even if it meant poring over it for twelve hours after a day at work, sacrificing sleep for another look through, and maybe eating a little less healthy than normal.
Okay — I’ll be fair. Eating mac ‘n’ cheese was no hardship.
Now that I’ve handed it over, I’m sure it’s rife with er...
