Healthy Baby Boy & Short Story News

I gave birth to a healthy boy on September 11 at 2:29 in the morning. There were no complications during labor. He’s nursing well and gaining weight rapidly. He’s nursing almost too well–I’ve been getting hardly any rest. Unfortunately he never received the pediatrician’s memo stating that infants can go two to three hours without eating. Baby & General Update

I’m pregnant! Hugely pregnant. I’m at 33 weeks, due September 16th. If I’ve been quiet on my blog and in general, that’s why. The baby, according to the latest ultrasound, is healthy and gaining weight even though there’s been a slight abnormality with the umbilical cord insertion to the placenta. I’ve been unable to travel for conferences this year, because I have to save up my sick / vacation time at work to cover my maternity leave. Quick Update

The last few months have been busy but good. A few writing highlights:

– I took Cat Rambo’s Writing SF & F class in February. I’d recommend it highly to anyone who asked.
– My writing group completed its annual intensive, where we critique weekly and invite guest lecturers that are either fellow authors or from SF/F publisher to speak with us.
– I’m currently querying my new YA LGBT superhero novel.

There are a couple of smaller projects currently in the works that I hope to be able to share...

Pregnancy loss: Don’t say the a-word. She might crack.

I knew I was pregnant instantly – as soon as conception happened. Impossible, you say. But I knew.

Over the next few weeks, I was so sick. A smell could set off a bout of nausea. Scents, in particular, onion and cumin, disgusted me. An image of food on Facebook, my husband mentioning a recipe, anything, everything, became intolerable. I couldn’t bend at the waist or brush my teeth without wanting to vomit.

Common wisdom has it that morning sickness means a strong, healthy, viable pregnancy....

Writing My Own Obits: A Cheerful Way To Pass Time

I don’t know if it’s just me (it may be just me) but there’s something about writing my own obituary that cheers me up. Whenever I am sick, on a long and grueling hike, or am waiting in line at the Department of Licensing, the first line of an obituary springs into my head:

“Precocious young writer Langley Hyde…”

(Maybe someday I’ll have to chance that first line. Maybe not.)
