‘Las Patronas’ Receive Human Rights Award for Work Feeding Migrants

Norma Vázquez Romero, a working-class woman who has lived a very simple life in the coastal state of Veracruz in Mexico, was given the 2013 Mexican Human Rights Award for dedicating the last 15 years of her life to feeding migrants from Central America and Southern Mexico who pass by her town on the train known as “La Bestia” (“The Beast”) with the goal of reaching the United States.

A Perogy with a Big Heart from Saskatoon for Ukraine

To find a decent and reputable organization related to the situation within Ukraine is a difficult task indeed. We’ve been doing our research lately on it, which we plan to report on at a later date, but many we  are incredibly disappointed with and question their legitimacy. But… We did find one organization based in... Read More

‘I Sold My Sister for 300 Dollars’

“It isn’t rare in Syria to marry at the age of 16. Most Arab men are aware of this, and often come to Syria to find a young bride. These days, they come to find them at the camps, where almost everybody is desperate to leave. I have seen Jordanians, Egyptians and Saudis passing by the tents in search of a virgin to take along. They pay 300 dollars, and they get the girl of their dreams.”

Ukraine Struggling to Deal with Human Trafficking Menace

Ukraine is a source, transit and, recently a destination for the human trafficking. International organizations estimate about 1000 such cases annually that end up mainly in Russia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Turkey, the UAE, Italy, and Spain. Of all those cases, only 34 people gained the official status of those who suffered from trafficking. Most cases are not reported, while many remain unseen by the state.

Gypsy with a Capital “G”

A few years ago, I wrote a play called King of the Gypsies. I interviewed people from the Roma community, researched their history, and visited Appleby Common when the Gyspy fair was on...

I was fortunate with the timing of this play; Nick Griffin was at his highest point and Labour was on their way out. We seemed to be swinging enthusiastically to the right and, through King of the Gyspies, I hoped to play some small part in slowing it down.

To Be or Not to Be – Anti-discrimination and LGBT Rights in Ukraine

It’s clear that discrimination against LGBT people is a problem in Ukraine. Many members of Ukraine’s parliament deny there is discrimination – even as sixty- one of these politicians signed a petition to Kyiv city administration to forbid the Equality March.

Forced Labour is about Politics and Economics as much as Crime
