Weekend Writing Warriors – A Christmas Flash Fiction Excerpt #6

Another installment of the Christmas short I’m sharing on Weekend Writing Warriors.

Christmas time and at the end of his military service, Jake Reagan returns from deployment to an empty apartment.  Single again with his lease up, he plans on wintering on the Outer Banks of North Carolina with his brother and work as a duck hunting guide. His first night there, he runs into an old flame at the hotel bar while waiting for the annual Ducks Unlimited auction to begin. While catching up, she tells him she’s divorced and her son only visits her during summers.

“That must be tough,” Jake offered thinking it’d been hard enough to leave his dog when he joined the military.

She waved him off. “So, you’re going to help John on hunting tours this winter, I hear.”

“It wasn’t you, you know…it was just―”

“You needed to see the world beyond this sandbar, Jake,” she said without a resenting tone.

“And what I valued most, I left behind.”

Sammy arched a brow and slid a warming glance down his body. “What are you looking to bid on at the auction?”

He’d bid his last penny for another chance with her. “I need another gun,” he said and shotgunned the rest of his whiskey.

Check back next week as this Christmas short wraps up. FYI my next short novel, Sand and Sin releases on December 22.

Jax is a SEAL all about the mission, but a sexy bar owner has enough saucy wit to drive him off course.

Guarding his Heart – Carolyn Spear #romance #paranormal

guarding heart Today I’m hosting Carolyn Spear’s hero, Trevor Green, from her release, Guarding his Heart in the Wiccan Haus series. Welcome Trevor. So happy to meet you!

Thanks, Dani for inviting me today. This really isn’t my thing- socializing but I promised Cassie I’d play nicely. I’m much better at blending into the background, you know, better for protecting my charges.

How did you meet your heroine? Cassidy Sinclair is my mate. She was my 6-year-old charge’s teacher.

Tell us something no one would believe about you? Large or small.  Really? Well, I’m what a Watcher. Native Americans call me Elder Brother or the Big Man.

A watcher, interesting…What’s the one thing you’d never tell Cassie? I’d never tell her to shave. It would be hypocritical.

LOL! What’s one thing your lover or potential lover can do to totally turn you on? Look at me. That’s all it takes.

Well that’s easy. Do you rely on your physical prowess or your intelligence to attract a lover?  Before Cassie, it was all physical, scratching an itch. Lots of women love tall men. My Cassie, she knows how to put me in my place and I gotta say, I love every minute of it.

Is there a specific body type, hair, or eye color that attracts you? Does your current lover meet the criteria?  I don’t have a “type” but a woman who is comfortable enough in her body to let loose, damn that’s sexy. Cassie owns me.

What’s your occupation? I’m a bodyguard for high ranking members of the Syndicate.

I see…what worries you the most? The bastards in the new radical anti-Syndicate faction. That they will attack Cassie again. It would be the last time.

I can see you’re a take care of business type. What’s a sexual fantasy that your lover would never agree to? Sharing. I don’t share well. No menages for me!

Don’t blame you there, I’m the jealous type. Well I hope yours and Cassie’s story is a Wiccan Haus hit.  Glad you stopped by today.

Thanks, Dani. Here’s the blurb and excerpt for Guarding his Heart.

School teacher Cassidy Sinclair’s sanity is questioned after claiming to see her hero appear out of thin air. Her savior dies in her arms after intercepting a gunshot meant for her and her student, Allan Branson. The only person who believes her account is the boy’s father who arranges her one-week stay at an exclusive holistic healing spa called the Wiccan Haus off the coast of Maine.

Trevor Green, a paranormal, is recovering—again—from gunshot wounds at Wiccan Haus. His body battered and his confidence broken, he is tasked to protect the woman he almost got killed. The one he’s fantasized about for months and who thinks he’s dead.

Excerpt:

“What happened?”

What happened? He inhaled a calming breath and counted to ten, aware that Cemil and Cyrus had joined Sage and were awaiting his answer. Well, not Cemil. He was just being polite. As a telepath, he’d already read Trevor’s thoughts.

“She was determined to come back here and I had to stop her.”

Cemil grinned. “The best you could come up with was decloaking her dead savior right in front of her?”

“Yeah,” he snarled, “it was.” Cassidy stirred in his arms and he tightened his hold keeping her close. He savored the innocent intimacy and hated himself for enjoying it.

Dana stood between the two elevators. “Your room or hers?”

“Hers.”

He nodded toward Sage as he waited for the third elevator, the one reserved for the humans. Somehow, these siblings had charmed the elevators so that only humans could use the one designated to go to the third floor and only Paranormals could use the second floor elevator. The first elevator was reserved for the siblings alone. No one knew where that one went.

“I could use a key to her room.”

“How will you get there?” Sage asked, though he was sure she knew the answer. As always, he would wait patiently, cloaked, for his opportunity.

“Don’t worry about me. Just get me the key. She’s not going to be an easy one to keep an eye on.” The elevator pinged and Dana escorted him to the third floor.

In the privacy of the elevator, he pressed his lips to her hair. She wouldn’t know, but he would remember the silky strands caressing his cheek during the long lonely nights.

He needed to concoct a believable explanation for materializing out of thin air without threatening her sanity. Or his secret.

Game On! Cover Reveal

It’s time to take it to the next level.

Until he finds a new semi-pro league in Virginia Beach. And that lucky break arrives when a bikini-clad hottie snags one of his passes on the beach and offers him a tour of the area.

A scandalous affair turned Jordan Kelly into media fodder—and in no hurry to get back into the dating game. But the easy going tight end of the new Triton’s team unleashes an inhibited wild streak in her and has her tempting him with a game of her own. But when she finds out who the owner of the Tritons is, she’s wondering if she’ll repeat her mistakes . . .

Weekend Writing Warriors – A Christmas Short – Excerpt 5

Weekend Warrior WritersAnother installment of the Christmas short I’m writing for Weekend Writing Warriors.

At the end of his military service, Josh Reagan returned from deployment to an empty apartment.  Single again with his lease up, he plans on wintering on the Outer Banks of North Carolina with his brother over the holidays and through duck hunting season as a guide. His first night there, he hopes to obtain a new gun at the Duck Unlimited auction but instead runs into an old flame at the hotel bar. In the last excerpt she reminded him that she moved back to the Outer Banks last year.

John had probably told him of Sammy’s return, but then his brother is the one who also said he could do better than the woman who could out shoot most guys. If he’d meant better as in high minded and high maintenance then he’d been wrong and the empty apartment proved it . “Sorry, times slips away when you’re gone so much. Gosh, how old is your son now?”

She sighed and glanced down the bar. “Daniel. He’s nine and lives with his dad since we split.” She sipped from her iced mug. “He likes going to school with the cousins he grew up with. He’ll spend summers with me because he likes the beach.”

Check back next week as this Christmas short continues. FYI my next short novel, Sand and Sin releases on December 22.

Weekend Writing Warriors – A Christmas Short – Excerpt 4

Weekend Warrior WritersToday is the fourth installment of a Christmas short I’m writing for Weekend Writing Warriors.

A brandy colored gaze burned into Jake as hot as the whiskey searing his belly. The combo nearly stopped his heart. “Sammy.”

“Your brother said I’d probably find you here,” she said smiling.

Ten years later, he  found her western jeans and brown suede

hunter’s vest sexy instead tomboyish. He hugged her and let her light citrus fragrance bring him home. “Thought you’d moved.”

“And moved back home a year ago.” She ordered a beer and another round for him. Brushing her dark hair behind her ear revealed purple highlights, hinting her nonconformist nature remained.

View from My Window

This week on Romance Weekly, Betty Bolte  says our surroundings influence our mood and view of the world as much as setting in any story. What is the view outside our window, or what would we like the view to be?

DJhThe last two winters have been unusually snowy for southeastern VA. Hoping for a warming trend this coming winter.

Beyond my suburban window is  a large lawn with evergreen and dogwood trees.  I wouldn’t be happy as a city dweller and although I’d love to live in the country, I’m spoiled by the convenience of the grocery store.

The view from my house is nice, but I’d love to win the lotteryCoquina_1 and have coffee in the mornings gazing out at the ocean.  Then again if I won the lottery, I’d be able see many views via a fancy RV!

Have a great Thanksgiving! Hope you  already visited Kristi Rose  and will now hop on over to Leslie Hachtel.

HAB_DJace_backup_99My current release is on sale for $.99 at all major e-book retailers. Something to warm you up after a cold day of Black Friday shopping!

Weekend Writing Warriors – A Christmas Short – Excerpt 3

Weekend Warrior WritersToday is the third installment of a Christmas short I’m writing for Weekend Writing WarriorsFor previous excerpt.

Icicle lights illuminated the expansive liquor display.  A bartender in a crisp white shirt and black vest nodded and spun a red napkin on the bar in front of Jake.

Whiskey“Double bourbon on the rocks.” He slid his Real Tree jacket onto the back of the chair, pleased the guy read his taciturn mood, then checked the time and Ducks Unlimited Facebook page for the list of items being auctioned. Living a Spartan life style during deployment and coming home to an empty apartment had him seeking old comforts like a dog and gun. No dogs for sale, only a gun.

You going to the auction?” a woman asked sliding onto the chair next to him.

Guess the hunting jacket was a dead giveaway. He slammed back the bourbon that had landed in front of him and turned toward her.

Weekend Writing Warriors – A Christmas Short – Week 2

WWWToday is my birthday and this is the second installment of a Christmas short I’m writing for Weekend Writing WarriorsFor last week’s beginning excerpt.

Jake turned onto the beach road passing the Black Pelican Restaurant. He’d broke things off with his high school sweetheart, Sammy, there before he left for boot camp. What had made him think long, painted nails and high heels meant a better woman?

Arriving at the Comfort Inn for the Ducks Unlimited Christmas auction, he was glad for a decent excuse to avoid staying with his brother Dean and his wife, Katie, who seemed determined to match make.

The last woman had sufficiently drained his bank account, like it was his fault the military had extended his deployment. A dog was the only companionship he wanted right now. If he hadn’t already had a specialty in aviation repair, he’d have become a K9 officer.

The cold, salty breeze revived him as his eyes watered. Home in one piece. After checking in, he made his way into a darkened bar that only hosted a couple of patrons.

Weekend Writing Warriors – A Christmas Short

WWWEdits have been keeping me busy for my sports romance that will publish next June. However, I’d had this idea of doing a Christmas short just for Weekend Writing Warriors. Here goes.

The living room echoed as Jake trekked along the hardwood, empty except for his recliner and the TV. Her chocolate lab, Hersey, had always been more excited to see him home from deployment anyway. He’d miss her most.

He placed the fifth of Jack Daniels and his gear bag on the floor next to the recliner. Tomorrow, he’d grab his few belongings and head for OBX to help his brothers as a guide on winter duck hunting trips.

Jake unlaced his boots and dropped onto the recliner. With remote in hand he pressed the button and the flat screen lit up to a scene of Ralphie from The Christmas Story. He grabbed the bottle on the floor beside him. Perfect.

JaceDani_HotAsBlazesCheck back next week as this Christmas short continues. I want to thank all those who stopped to chat with me yesterday at The Ultimate Show for Woman at Virginia Beach. It was great to meet readers and I really appreciate those who bought one of my books.  And for everyone, my most current release, Hot as Blazes is on sale at Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Kobo for $.99.
