About the Book
Confessions of a Red Herring (A Red Herring Mystery) Cozy Mystery 1st in Series Kensington (May 29, 2018) Mass Market Paperback: 336 pages ISBN-13: 978-1496716569 Digital ASIN: B075C8FDT5
As a reporter, she’s used to covering the news. Now she’s the headline.Alex Vlodnachek has been a reporter for 12 years, a P.R. rep for three months, and a murder suspect for all of 24 hours. When her agency's double-dealing CEO is stabbed, scheming co-workers cast the new redhead as a compelling red herring. The story is media catnip—especially her salacious nickname: Vlod the Impaler.Even Alex has to admit she looks guilty.Out of a job and under suspicion, Alex is running low on cash, when she’s visited by a second disaster: her family. Soon her tiny bungalow is bursting with her nearest and not-so-dearest. To keep herself out of jail—and save what’s left of her sanity—Alex returns to her reporting roots. She goes undercover to reclaim her life, break the story, and unmask a murderer. Pretty much in that order. What she doesn’t know: The killer also has a to-do list. And Alex is on it.
Review
Confessions of a Red Herring by Dana Dratch is the first book in the new cozy A Red Herring Mystery series where ex-reporter Alex Vlodnachek gets framed for murder when the CEO turns up dead. All eyes land on Alex as the one who's done the deed which I didn't find was really explained up front. This gets her fired from her job (unfairly in my opinion) and so out of a job and under suspicion, Alex is running low on cash, when she’s visited by a second disaster: her family. Soon her tiny bungalow is bursting with her nearest and not-so-dearest. To keep herself out of jail—and save what’s left of her sanity—Alex returns to her reporting roots. She goes undercover to reclaim her life (cleaning toilets, no less), breaks the story, and unmasks the murderer. So what did I think? Excellent question. When I started the book, I though it suffered Fred Flintstone syndrome which basically means everything was going wrong for this poor girl and it was frustrating me beyond belief. It definitely sagged in the middle too but if you hang in there, the book redeems itself with the help of the main character's brother (Nick), friend (Trip), and grandmother (Baba). You can’t beat a spunky old lady with frying pans. I'm looking for the next book in the series.

New Series: The Bohemian Murder Manor

Fortune Teller Madam 'Nana' Vianu and her gifted Bohemian Lake girls, Mallory and Danior have an unparalleled weekend planned for the guests of their family-owned-and-operated lakeside manor resort.
A carnival themed mystery game including two days of fake fatal fortunes, harmless hauntings, and bogus book hunts. Or so they think until a dead body is found at the bottom of the manor's secret staircase. Rumors abound of past indiscretions and a ghost's revenge. It could all be part of the show but as the weather worsens so do their chances for survival. Snowed in with a killer, the Vianu girls must use their paranormal gifts and follow the clues to decipher what is real in this game of make-believe. Buy Now

"Stapleton did a great job writing a story that I couldn't figure out. I spent the entire book wondering if the murder was real or part of the game (I won't spoil it for you). I also didn't have a guess on who the murderer was, not even an inkling, which is rare because I can usually come up with some good theories. The author used both the participants real names and party names to add to my confusion. I've always wanted to be a part of a murder mystery party and this author made me feel like I was there." ~ Books By Steph
This is a new book in the Bohemian Lake area and it is a great read. This one focuses on the Manor and the Vianu women. They decide to host a murder mystery weekend with guests staying at the Manor which gets a little complicated with a snowstorm, attempted murder, a real murder or two, and ghosts. There are plenty of clues, many of which will lead you down erroneous paths if you are not careful. I cannot wait for the next book in the series. ~ Denise. H.
Welcome to the Bohemian Murder Manor home to the Vianu family with Nana, Mallory, and Danoir. This weekend is a murder mystery. Due to a blizzard some guests don’t make it and friends who weren’t supposed to be there arrive. A company is running the murder event and no one seems to know what is happening or who is who. This is an interesting mystery. The characters tie in with other Rachel Stapleton series which I think makes a fun addition. ~ B. Foerst

Have you checked out my latest Penning Trouble Mystery yet?

Sirens ring. Are you listening? Near Candy Cane Lane. A Body is glistening. A murderous sight. Trubble's investigating tonight. Walking through this winter wonderland.

It's the week before Christmas and Investigative Journalist Penelope Trubble has reluctantly agreed to investigate the death of a woman at the Sleighs & Slopes Adventure Resort in the hopes of exonerating her husband--who just happens to be Penny's ex. But with so many suspicious characters lurking in the trees, Penelope risks being strangled by clues, Christmas lights, conjecture, and catastrophe. It doesn't help that Penny's still a little frosty with the man accused of icing his bride, and she must prove he's no cold-blooded killer. At least there's candy-cane cocoa, a roaring fire, and the Laurentian Mountains to savor--not to mention the hunky detective dashing through the snow after her.

Helping an ex is a slippery slope, and things are going downhill fast for Penelope Trubble.

Book Review and Giveaway: Deadly Fashion by Kate Parker

Deadly Fashion by Kate Parker
Deadly Fashion (The Deadly Series) 3rd in Series - Can be read on its own Genre – Cozy Historical Mystery JDP Press Approximately 266 pages Will be up on Amazon for preorder soon and GoodReads
Why would a man, knowing his life was in danger, turn his back on his killer? In pre-war London, Olivia Denis wins a plum assignment from her newspaper when she meets the glamorous French fashion designer, Mimi Mareau. Mimi has it all, wealth, talent, acclaim, and a British duke for a lover. But on her first visit to Mimi's new Mayfair house of haute couture, Olivia finds something else - the body of an unknown man.Mimi and her three French assistants say they don't know the man, but is that true? As Olivia spends time around the salon, she learns at least one of the women knew the dead man and four women are lying.A British agent in possession of a terrible secret, an attempt on the life of a British leader, a fashion house in the middle of it all, and war marches closer. Can Olivia stop a murderer before he or she can strike again or shatter the fragile peace?

Rachael's Review

Tweed, Espionage and Cloche Hats Pre WWII London
It's 1938 and budding secret agent/society reporter for the Daily Premier, Olivia Denis finds herself interviewing the glamorous French fashion designer, Mimi Mareau when a German communist is found bludgeoned in the basement of the haute couture house. Olivia’s boss, Sir Henry suspects a leak and assigns her the task of uncovering who on ‘the committee’—a  collection of wealthy Jewish professionals, determined to save as many European Jews as possible—has turned coat and led a Nazi assassin to their door. Olivia having helped Sir Henry smuggle his own in-laws out of Germany is only too happy to lend her sleuthing skills to ferret out the murderer of such a noble man.
In addition to ‘the committee’, Olivia investigates a wide array of suspects at the Mayfair house of haute couture–Nazi sympathizers, the Duke of Marshburn and his mistress, Mimi Mareau; Fleur, the standoffish chief cutter who recognizes the dead man; and Reina, the mousy head seamstress and possible ex-wife of the victim.
As a style obsessed, WWII history addict, this book was the high fashion point of my day.  And although it was the third book in Kate Parker’s Deadly Series, it completely held up as a standalone. I will now be delving into this series beginning with the first book. The vivid vintage detail, the gritty backdrop and the intense atmosphere of a looming war transported me back to another era. Five Fashionable Thumbs Up!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:Kate Parker has wanted to travel to 1930s England since she read her mother’s Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers mysteries when she was a schoolgirl. After many years of studying science, she decided a time travel machine was out of the question so she found herself limited to reading about the period and visiting historic sites. Her love of this fascinating and challenging period led her to the research from which the Deadly series grew. Eventually, she found it necessary to spend several days in the British Library reading old newspapers, which meant another trip to England. Near Christmas. A sacrifice she’d gladly make every year.  Author Links: Website: www.KateParkerbooks.com

GET YOUR HOUSE HALLOWEEN SPOOKTACULAR

Welcome ghouls and boys! The witching hour is upon us! Cue the Cult Classic Horror Films, the Monster Mash, and the need for Haunted Houses decorations! If you’re hosting a Halloween party or a Deadly Haunted Ball like Juniper and Pike in Cookies, Corpses & the Deadly Haunt, you’ll need to get your house ready. Here are some of the tips on how I get my spooky old Victorian ready! Before you do anything, turn on the music, and get in the Halloween Spirit! I like Saint-Saëns "Danse Macabre." This dance of the dead features the Devil playing the violin, and a xylophone imitating the sounds of rattling bones. You might recognize it from certain Halloween films.

Fake skulls, cobwebs, candy dishes & creepy pictures
Skulls are an inexpensive and yet classy way to add a little spooky-ness to your house! I also keep these in my library to a little ambiance to my writing room. I bought my skulls (the eyes light up) at the dollar store. You know what else is cheap at the dollar store? Creepy pictures, candy dishes and fake cobwebs. Holographic Halloween Photos are cheesy, but I love them, and there’s no easier way to age a room than with fake spiderwebs! During Halloween you absolutely must have something to hold the candy. I like to use a witch’s pot that I got from a party store.

Table Cloths!
This is one of my favorite ways to decorate for Halloween, because they are so versatile! Just take an old sheer curtain and cut tears into it. Instant spooky chic table cloth or hang them in a doorway. I like to lay mine over a black cloth.
Fake TombstonesWe do a combo here. We have a couple that we bought from the dollar store or party centre but we also made some from cardboard and spray-painted. We just stand them up in the garden, along the walkway and against the house. My daughter likes to hide amongst them like she’s a statue and then jump out and scare people as they arrive. Little girls can be so spooky.
Old Trunks & Suitcases We found some in our attic and bought others at an antique shop. They are all over my house, so I just leave a fake hand or leg hanging half-out; add some fake cobwebs and boom! Now we have a hidden dead body. Similarly, we stick those old bones in our garden. How to make a creepy standing figure.
Get a tall lamp stand, and take the light bulb and shade off of it.
-Get a long dress or nightgown
-Leave the dress on the hanger, and hang it over the lamp stand.
-Get a skull or mask and place it over the top of the lamp stand, so that it covers the hanger. And there is your super cool and super creepy standing figure!

In my book, Juniper and Pike make creepy ghost ladies using mannequins, sheets and/orold sheer dresses and led lights. Review & #Giveaway – A Cajun Christmas Killing by Ellen Byron @ellenbyronla #5jinglebells #cozy

Rachael's Review:

Another dead body. Just another day in the Bayou for budding sleuth Magnolia Crozat. In the 3rd Cajun Country mystery, Ellen Byron once again cooks up a laugh out loud page turner that's as yummy as Ninette Crozat's Holiday Brandy Pain Perdu. Maggie Crozat is home for the holidays playing mistress of the Doucet Plantation to the tune of her new manager’s fiddle and helping out at her own family's B&B. Not a moment too soon, given that her family is sick with stress—the trouble is that the Crozat Plantation B & B is being targeted. It isn't long before Maggie and hunky boyfriend Bo Durand dig in, seeking out a mysterious Internet troll who is writing damaging reviews about all of her uncle's properties. What they find at the heart of the matter is a ruthless financier intent on acquiring the Crozat estate. Sadly, (but not really) that financier ends up dead, which lands Maggie and Bo on the suspect list. From irrational reviews to bursting bonfires and crusty guests, the sleigh bells are jingling, and the clock is ticking for Maggie and Rufus, who must catch the killer. Ellen Byron’s Cajun Country mysteries are delightful and addictive. I can't wait for the next book.
I give this five glorious bonfires a burning. ~ Author Rachael Stapleton

A Cajun Christmas Killing: A Cajun Country Mystery
Cozy Mystery 3rd in Series Crooked Lane Books (October 10, 2017) Hardcover: 304 pages ISBN-13: 978-1683313052 E-Book ASIN: B06XW23LPG
Maggie Crozat is back home in bayou country during the most magical time of the year. In Pelican, Louisiana, Christmastime is a season of giant bonfires on the levee, zydeco carols, and pots of gumbo. Except, this year, the Grinch has come to stay at the family-run Crozat Plantation B&B. When he floods travel websites with vicious reviews, Maggie thinks she’s identified him as rival businessman Donald Baxter. That is, until he’s found stabbed to death at Maggie’s workplace. And Maggie and her loved ones become top suspects. The Crozats quickly establish alibis, but Maggie’s boyfriend, Detective Bo Durand, remains under suspicion. With Bo sidelined during the investigation, Maggie finds herself forced to work with an unlikely ally: longtime family enemy Rufus Durand. Her sleuthing uncovers more suspects than drummers drumming, and lands her in the crosshairs of the murderer. The sleigh bells are jingling, and the clock is ticking for Maggie and Rufus, who must catch the killer or it will be the opposite of a Joyeux Noël in A Cajun Christmas Killing, the recipe-stuffed third installment of USA Today bestselling author Ellen Byron’s Cajun Country mysteries.

New Review *Five Star Free Range Fun

A.B Funkhauser's Shell Game

Print Length: 228 pagesPublisher: Solstice Publishing (September 12, 2017)Publication Date: September 12, 2017Sold by: Amazon Digital Services LLCLanguage: EnglishASIN: B075M1K43Z
A smart and hilarious novel that delivers constant chuckles and an onslaught of outlandish situations piling up around neighbors Bronagh and Poonam in the sleepy town of Pictontown on the Downs.

The best part is when Sils Banks, Animal Control Officer for Pictontown on the Downs attends a swinger’s party and meets gossip columnist, Goddess Moonbow who decides that Sils should be treated as one of the animals. In other words, Sils is caged like one of her stray cats. From here on out, the story is fast-paced and hilarious as Sils comes up with a plan to exact revenge and expose the true happenings of this sleepy little town. This book is stuffed with precious one-liners and humorous set ups.

The characters are colorful, the pacing breathtaking, and the atmosphere of the tiny town, with all its political drama and kinky sex, rings ludicrously entertaining. A.B Funkhauser’s writing is delightful and addictive. I can't wait for the next installment. ~ The Mysterious Ink Spot
