Annie Turnbo Malone

Annie Turnbo Malone was one of the first self made African-American millionaires. She used her success to bring others with her, creating jobs for thousands of other women like her and using her millions to support good causes.

Annie was born in southern Illinois in 1869. She was the daughter of two excaped slaves and the 10th of 11 children. When she was still young her parents both died, orphaning Annie (yes she’s the other ‘little orphan Annie’!) She moved to live with her older sister....

Which Switch is the Switch, Miss, for Ipswich?

Stories From Ipswich

which_switch

I’ve just had a row with a telephone girl,a telephone girl, my brain’s in a whirl.
I asked her for Ipswich, but she lost her head,

(Chorus)
“Which switch is the switch, Miss, for Ipswich?
It’s the Ipswich switch which I require.
Which switch switches Ipswich with this switch?
You’ve switched my switch on the wrong wire.
You’v...

What am I looking for? I’m always entranced by transferware, even though (or perhaps because) I sold off my own collection of pink a few...

Windows into History

Frederic Edwin Church's 1865 painting "Aurora Borealis" Frederic Edwin Church’s 1865 painting “Aurora Borealis”

Snippets 87. The Royal Society of London Journal is one of the greatest sources of historical information available. Established in 1665 as the first exclusively scientific journal in the world, it has been in continuous publication ever since. The remit of the journal has been very wide over the years, so there is plenty to interest an historian.

The following article was published in 1739 in the journal, and i...

A guest post by Clay Gilbert, author of “Annah” and “Dark Road to Paradise” clay gilbert

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if that nice meal out you’ve been looking forward to all week turned out to be your worst nightmare? If you couldn’t finish more than a couple of bites? With its strange customs and unfamiliar names, the Anglo-Saxon era became mysterious and misunderstood, ironically by the descendants...
