‘All Abouth Home’: An Illiterate Emigrant’s Letters from America to Kerry in the 1850s
Irish in the American Civil War
As I often reiterate, the greatest value of the widows’ and dependents’ Civil War Pension Files lies not in what they contain about the American Civil War, but in what they tell us about 19th century Irish emigrants and emigration. There are few finer examples of this than the file associated with Charles Greaney. The documents within it allow us to trace his origins in Ireland down to the laneway he likely grew up on, and the road on which he walked to work....

England’s First Queen, the Original Wicked Stepmother
History... the interesting bits!
Queen Ælfthryth and King Edward at Corfe
After writing an article about Edward the Elder the other week, I thought it only fair to take a look at the other side of the story and write about Ælfthryth, England’s first ever crowned queen and Edward’s stepmother – and possible murderer.
Author Annie Whitehead researched Ælfthryth for her book Alvar the Kingmaker and rather likes her. So she can’t be all bad – can she?
Ælfthryth was probably born around 945; th...

Tutankhamen: Damnatio Memoriae
Excised: Damnatio Memoriae – Neither Osirus nor Thoth could protect the forgotten one
Damnatio Memoriae, the erasing of one’s name, reputation, memory, for earthly eternity. In the case of Ancient Egypt, erasing one’s name was akin to black magic. You see, the Ancient Egyptians practised performative magic. By braking the ankles of a stone depiction of a person they crippled him inhis afterlife. By erasing the cartouche, the written name of the king, the now-dead king also ce...

New Orleans Visit – Metairie Cemetery
My wife’s second and last Civil War concession during our recent visit to the Crescent City, Metairie Cemetery proved a little frustrating. After taking the Canal Street trolley to its terminus, we de-streetcarredin an area surrounded by cemeteries (that’s why, when you are looking for which streetcar to board, you look for the one that says “Cemeteries” – $3 for a 24 hour ticket).
You’ll have to walk about a quarter-mile or so from the streetcar stop to the cemetery’s pedestr...
Starting over: The art (and agony) of writing beginnings in fiction.
It’s been a long time since I’ve done an article specifically about writing, the craft and practice of writing. A lot of authors’ websites givewriting advice pretty often, and as you know I stake my “brand” on being different than that. But I’m just coming out of an extremely intensive two-week period of fiction writing, which has proven very productive. (For first looks at what I’ve been writing, join my email newsletter!) With writing craft on the brain as a result of t...

John Cage’s Music of Chance and Change
On the 5th of September 1912, American composer, theorist, writer, and the pioneer of indeterminacy in music John Cage was born in Los Angeles, California. After having studied piano in LA and Paris, he came under the influence of such musical innovators as Richard Buhling, Henry Cowell, Adolph Weiss, and Arnold Schönberg. By the late 1930s, Cage had established himself as a leader of the music world’s avant-garde movement, a position he solidified over the next five decades, expa...
