The Origins of Perfume
Perfume is poetic mastery of some of the most exotic scents in the world and the artful combination of each in just the right quantities. So, its a little bit of this and a little bit of that to produce the desired aroma and even though the ingredients in a bottle of Channel No.5 are identical, the responses that it invokes in individuals is by no means the same
Most people are under the impression that perfume originated in France, after all Paris is the City of Love. But...

Easter 1916 – The Forgotten Battle
The GPO, Mount Street Bridge, The South Dublin Union these are names that resonate when it comes to Easter 1916 as the battlegrounds for what became Padraig Pearse’s ‘glorious failure’.
However, for some quirk of history, the success that took place in the sleepy town of Ashbourne, Co Meath, during the Rising has been largely ignored by the general public.
On April 24, Easter Monday morning, Commandant Thomas Ashe received orders from James Connolly to send 40 of his 5th Fi...

In the kitchen? really?
Last weekend I had what we call a “Ray Day” with friends in New Hampshire. A Ray Day is when we sit and watch tv all day while eating and eating and eating and eating. Anyway… so we watched a documentary series called Murder Maps on Netflix. WOW. And that is how I came upon this woman’s story- Marie Manning. I highly recommend watching the show, very informative and well done.

The Elusion of Happiness in Viginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway
On the 28th of March 1941, English writer Virginia Woolf filled her pockets with stones and drowned herself in the River Ouse, near Lewes, East Sussex during a bout of severe depression. A Song For Mother: Last Letters of A 16-Year-Old Wisconsin Irish Immigrant
Irish in the American Civil War
Some Irish soldiers of the American Civil War were little more than boys. Despite their youth, they often fervently supported the cause for which they fought. Timothy Dougherty was one such emigrant soldier. His antebellum family story is one of hardship and hard work– typical of that of many Irish immigrants in America. During the war, he took the opportunity of his final letters home to display his fervent belief in the war effort, not only in words, but als...

The work of Stephen Petronio has always spoken to my soul. For me it is the intrinsic value of his work, the ways in which he portrays the human condition. He is one of those rare artists who has the ability to combine both the cerebral and the emotional aspects giving us a glimpse into that which has made hi...
