Here is my latest ‘Top 5 Wednesday’. Best Fictional Technologies

I have already been informed that I was looking into the flipcam a hell of a lot in this vid. I am aware. I don’t know why that happened this time around. I must have been distracted or something… Won’t happen again.

Creating a WIKI for Your Book

Why I never thought of this before, I don’t know. I have wanted to make a bit of a reference for the smaller details in my stories for quite some time, but didn’t know how to go about doing it in a way that didn’t look like a dictionary. And I would never reference something like that. Then the ultimate idea (and I can’t for the life of me remember who I first heard it from, but I think it was a BookTuber on YouTube).

I have started creating personal WIKI pages for my stories. This turned out to be a great idea because when I did one for Violet Blake, I started immediately coming up ideas for the rest of the sequel. I have always liked writing out character backgrounds so I can better understand why a character does what they do, but a Wiki? It turned out to be an amazing thing for my writing.

Now, we all know that I can’t plan. The very idea of planning will keep my up at night. But a few pages of a Wiki seems easy enough. I wrote one up for Violet Blake in less than an hour and it helps me to get inside my main antagonist’s head a bit better. It also helped me out a bit with the world building. I was ready to Google how to do some world building, knowing that it was critical for this story because it was moving quite fast. I was having massive dialogue dumps in order to help the character along. Understanding her circumstances has been as much of a learning experience about this world for me as it has been for her.

I started with the main character. What she is. Who she is. Her age. Who she is in a relationship with (or at least who she will be as I have not written that part yet. Probably to come or START coming in book 3). Then I moved onto the antagonist and her entire background within a few words. That did a lot for me.

Then go onto the setting. Where is it. Why are the characters there. What does it look like?

The circumstances. New keywords or terms that I created.

The societies and organizations within the story. When were they created? Why? How? Who started it? When did it go bad? (Because it all goes very badly in my story).

This might sound like a bit of an outline. It’s not! It’s an info dump for me to reference so I have less trouble with continuity errors. And it helped me to figure out the world inside my head when it was only partially created. I spent over six months trying to figure out this world. This particular story has been re-written three times. And that was just the two hundred or so pages and the first 50,000 words. The first part has been released as a novella with nearly 25,000 words. So that means I have chopped 75,000 or so words just trying to figure out the details of the first 100 pages to get everything right for the upcoming books. So basically…anyone complaining about editing and removing word count, you won’t get any sympathy from me! You rip that story to shreds and start over if you have to. I did a few times. Hell, when I first started Violet Blake, it had fairies in it! Or was it banshees? I think there was both actually. And now it’s more sci-fi/thriller.

The Wiki page did more for the story than anything else as far as helping me to construct the universe. Highly recommend creating one.

What helps you out with world building?

Write Like the Wind!

Today is Easter Sunday. Or as I lovingly refer to it, the celebration of the rebirth of the Goddess! And no, I don’t say that because I read “Da Vinci Code.” I took an entire semester of a college course solely entitled “Goddess Religions,” and I find the celebration of Easter to be quite comical. Not meaning to offend anyone, but it always seems like the places I need to get to on Easter are closed because Christianity adopted a day to their calendar that belonged to the pagans. I dunno. It’s inconvenient and it pisses me off. But that’s me…

Yesterday I decided that my work ethic has not been where it should be. Or I am not prioritizing…or something along those lines. When I read that some writers (self-published ones mind you) publish 2-5 works in a single month (some of them being short stories and novellas), I think poorly of myself and my 5 books out right now. I am not making the most of my time, clearly. And there is a formula to self publishing that seems to work. PUBLISH! ALL THE FREAKING TIME! I never knew before how these “writing ninjas” as I lovingly call them do it!

Today, I broke one of my key rules. I normally don’t allow myself to write more than 2,000-2,300 words in a day. Because sometimes when I push myself too much, nothing but crap pours out of me. I think that I need to push myself harder than that. Especially if I expect any kind of results in the future. I currently have a short story from college almost ready to publish. And by almost I mean that I am anxiously awaiting the cover artist to get back to me with my cover because I would put it up today if I could. Then I have a short story from the “Elder Origins” series almost done. A certain POV from a scene that was not included in the book, but spoken about at the very end. And then I have been working on a small romance story. Not sure what it is yet or if it is even worth publishing. But some writers out there argue that you should publish even the stuff that might be sub par because you never know what is going to communicate with people. Now THAT is something I know to be true. I have often found that the pieces I wrote for classes which I found to be complete drivel were my teacher’s favorite. That teacher, not so much my favorite. But you get the idea.

This morning I woke up and wrote 3,000 words in the span of two hours. I wish that I could do that every single day. But let’s face it. Sometimes the drive just isn’t there no matter how much you fight for it. I hope that I have several more days like today, because maybe I can be one of those people who is constantly putting out material.

My inspiration of the day – this amazing song by Lindsey Stirling, who I am going to see in concert in the summer months. Freaking love this girl!

Genre Fiction vs Literary Fiction | Champagne Thursday

I know that this is a topic that I have discussed in great length on my blog, but I started talking about it now on my YouTube channel. My new series, Champagne Thursday will have a relatively new topic every week regarding writing.

I hope you enjoy!

If “The Keeper’s Realm” Were a Movie

“The Keeper’s Realm” is still the work that I am the most proud of. It went by quickly as far as writing it and I really loved how it turned out. When I am writing, I see everything in my mind as if it were a movie. I have the whole thing casted usually, or at least I know what the characters look like as a whole.

So without further ado… if “The Keeper’s Realm” were made into a movie, this would be my cast. And this is how I saw the characters in my mind while writing.

Ashlyn

This is what Ashlyn Drakes looks like. I know that it might make me creeper and stalker-ish given that this is Emma Pickles, the YouTube beauty guru. But I just always thought she was SO SO SO unbelievably pretty. Kinda like Megan Fox. My character in my head looks more like her than any actress or model I can think of or find on Google Images. So here’s to you Emma! You inspire me through more than just makeup.

*~*~*~*~*

Damien

Of course Damien has to be Henry Cavill. A slightly younger Henry Cavill. But yes, come on!!!! Now some may know why Ashlyn was swooning over him. Hell, I like to just look at him do. Especially when he dose the eye thing like he is doing right here. Does it all make sense now?

*~*~*~*~*

Emilie de Ravin - Lyla

And Emilie de Ravin as Lyla. This girl has an amazing look. As does Lyla. White blonde hair, piercing eyes. A softness that can go hard at a moment’s notice. Angelic, and startling all the same. Yep. It had to be her.

*~*~*~*~*

I hope that I am not the only one who sees things in her mind as if it were a film. I am currently working on a sequel to Violet Blake and ‘The Keeper’s Realm’ that I hope to have out by the end of the summer or early fall. So here’s hoping!

Alas! We are reunited!!!

So…the reason for my lack of updates still further….my family moved. Again! But this time it should be final for a quite a few years. Which for us generally means around 5. Har har.

I have my own room and office. And yes, I know. I am living at home. I feel like I need to defend myself when saying this often because of my age and my career situation. I am self-employed and living at home. Yes. But am I lazy? No. I work 7-8 hours a day on my books or my marketing strategies. I consider it my full time job. I have a family who fully supports me on it. And also, I have a sick relative who needs constant care. Like the kind where you need to check on them every hour if not more. So, that is my main reasoning for living at home. Not to mention that I help out with all the small stuff. The shopping, the cooking, the cleaning…and in this case, packing and moving everything. That was a bitch. Can’t even tell you. I had scraps on my body just from hauling boxes out to the car and back into the house.

Small moves are worse than big ones. That much I am certain.

In other news, when you move, you sometimes find treasures. You lose others. I am still missing a ton of things. Particularly my new “Catching Fire” DVD. Not too happy about that. But right now, I found something that was priceless to me.

When I was in college, (my freshman year to be exact), I wrote the first short story that I was very proud of. The class reviewed it and liked it as well. I was watching a documentary on some of the most haunted places in America. This story is all about the setting. And it is rather creepy, if not downright horror. I know there isn’t much of a market for that unless your name starts with Stephen and ends with King. But a girl can dream, right? Not that I want to spend my life writing horror. In fact, I can’t even watch horror movies. I am the kind of person who likes to be able to sleep at night without thinking that something is most definitely lurking just behind the closed bedroom door.

With that being said, I am sitting here putting the finishing touches on it and hoping that the short story will be released by the end of this week.

Oh, the feels that came back reading this story and the excitement when I finally found it. *happy dance*

If I could take a plane anywhere…RIGHT NOW!

I have been forcing myself to turn to a blog prompt website to help me get to blogging. I like the idea of this one, even if my answer might be a tad boring. I don’t want to go somewhere particularly exotic. Mostly because I have skin that is very temperamental to certain environments.

If I could take a plane anywhere right now, money being no option… it would be London. I lived in the United Kingdom for over a year, and it was the best year of my life. The earlier part was definitely the best just because it was little more exciting when I wasn’t dealing with the internship from hell with a commute that literally gave me blisters the size of walnuts on my feet.

I have friends in the UK that I miss so much right now. My life in my current city has been consumed with family issues and personal dramas. A get-away to see my old friends would be the nicest thing in the world right now.

A trip to the V&A, the Ashmolean in Oxford maybe, and definitely few pub nights with the gals. Kelly Amanda, Julie, Jessica, Jennifer, Esme, Sarah Jane, Ntani, Hazel… I miss you all.

Warning: This was not a good hair year for me. Stylist butchered my lovely locks right before I left. I cried buckets. Behold, me as a blonde.

Stonehenge 2

Stonehenge was a great day. And those ancients knew a thing or two about the “feels.” We all got a little wacky and crazy while there. Physically and verbally. Love you Lauren!

*~*~*~*~*

Sarah Jane

I took a train to York to see my pen pal of over 10 years (mental note, I need to write her soon). We met as all people should. A fan forum. ;-) I think it was for Harry Potter in fact.

*~*~*~*~*

Dover 2The cliffs of Dover.

Dover

Can’t even say how excited I was to go there. Anything outside my element was an adventure.

*~*~*~*~*~*

Brighton

I swear if I could buy a house anywhere in the world and money wasn’t an option, I would have one in Brighton. Gorgeous city.

*~*~*~*~*

IMATS

One of my most exciting days. As a long time makeup fanatic, I bought a ticket to IMATS where I met the Pixiwoo sisters and my best friend, Kelly Amanda for the first time. We would later go on to Paris together.

*~*~*~*~*

Cambrige 2

I lived in Cambridge for a few months.

Cambridge

I got very very thin from the walking to my internship. Wasn’t an easy commute to say the least. The stress took its toll. My family immediately started feeding me when I came home. Har har.

*~*~*~*~*

Edinburgh Edinburgh 2

One of my fav cities of all time, Edinburgh. Beautiful yet dark and eery all at the same time. It inspired me to include it in my book, “The Keeper’s Realm.” I want to set more stories there in the future. A re-visitation might be in order. ;-)

*~*~*~*~*

Inverness

As much as I liked the Scottish landscape, the Rocky Mountains are still #1 in my heart. Although, I haven’t seen New Zealand yet. That is on my bucket list.

*~*~*~*~*

Ashmolean

A day wondering around the Ashmolean. One of my fav museums. If I were offered a job there, I wouldn’t have the strength to say no.

*~*~*~*~*

London Eye

The London Eye

London Eye 2

During my final weeks there, I spent a day exploring London with Lauren and her mom.

*~*~*~*~*

Museum

My own personal rebellion against Chatsworth and its gaudy Christmas ornaments when I was visiting. Made taking pics impossibly difficult. And placing my fav sculpture of all time in the most inconvenient of places. Anyone from my course of study will understand this pic perfectly. ;-)

*~*~*~*~*

HP

No trip to London is complete without a trip to Harry Potter studios.

*~*~*~*~*

Naomi

Me and my gym buddy, Naomi. Such a darling. And the guy behind us was the leader of the International Students society. We took trips all over England on weekends. I’ve probably seen of more England that most Brits have.

*~*~*~*~*

Evelyn

Pub night! Junie and Evelyn. My travel buddies in Scotland.

*~*~*~*~*

Hope you enjoy!!

The Resurgence of Violet Blake is now available!!

I am happy (and a tad bit nervous) to announce that my new novella series premiere is currently available on Amazon as an eBook.

You can buy it here: http://www.amazon.com/The-Resurgence-Violet-Blake-Faucheux-ebook/dp/B00IX6BQ1K/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1394548863&sr=8-2&keywords=Bre+Faucheux

I have been working on this novella for over six months. I rewrote it over five times. It started as an epic fantasy, only for me to realize that I haven’t read enough fantasy to really write it well. Then it turned into a spy chase type of thing. Then NaNoWriMo. That really helped me to get the groundwork done for the story, even though I ended up cutting 70,000 words by the end. I decided that I wanted this to be a novella series rather than a full length novel because I am going through a phase of liking shorter stories that have a great cliffhanger at the end.

This story centers around Shawn Cassidy. A slightly geeky but very smart girl just trying to survive high school (and don’t we all know how awful those years are). Only Shawn has a secret (as is the case with many YA stories, but I promise this one is a bit different). She comes from a family of healers. Her entire family is able to heal other people with their touch. This gift has been passed down for generations. Everyone in her family becomes a doctor so they can help with through their use of this incredible gift. But what Shawn doesn’t know can hurt her. And her family secret, isn’t quite as much of a secret as she thought it was.

I am currently working on the second book, along with the 4th ‘Elder Origins’ book. And a sequel to ‘The Keeper’s Realm.” Plus another novella series. GAH! So much to do! So little brain capacity left. Putting a new book out there takes my OCD to the extreme. I was up late looking at the document for any and all grammatical errors. I would like to think that I got them all, but let’s face it, when you are doing everything on your own it is extremely difficult. There is no team behind me and I don’t have a beta for personal preference reasons. So let’s hope that they are to a minimum.

But getting reviews that talk about grammar errors really make me upset because I work SO hard to get them all. But it really can’t be done. I have plenty of traditionally published books on my shelves with grammatical errors in them. The last Harry Potter book was FULL of them.

Anyway, that is the exciting new. If you enjoy YA, thrillers, chase, action, and a bit of paranormal, please check out my new novella, “The Resurgence of Violet Blake.”
