************************************

What causes transphobia?Lack of information and stereotypes portrayed by popular media. The most proactive thing you can do about transphobia is to arm yourself with information and educate others.
Facts:
Nearly one million adults in the US identity of transgender.
According to a recent Pew poll, 90% of Americans say they personally know someone who is lesbian, gay, or bisexual. However only 8% of Americans say they personally know someone who is transgender.
The National Transgender Discrimination Survey, the largest study of transgender people’s experiences, found that 41 percent of transgender and gender non-conforming people have attempted suicide, a rate far higher than the national average of 4.6 percent.

What does transgender mean? Transgender is a term for people whose gender identity differs from what is typically associated with the sex they were assigned at birth. For transgender people, the sex they were assigned at birth and their own internal gender identity do not match.

What’s the difference between sex and gender?
Sex refers to the designation of a person at birth as either "male" or "female" based on their anatomy (e.g. reproductive organs) and/or their biology (e.g. hormones).

Gender refers to the traditional or stereotypical roles, behaviors, activities and attributes that a given society consider appropriate for men and women.
Gender identity is someone's internal, personal sense of being a man or a woman.
Keep in mind that gender identity is not sexual orientation. Sexual orientation refers to whom you are attracted, so trans people can be gay, bisexual, straight, asexual, pansexual, etc., just like cisgender individuals.

What is Gender Identity Disorder?
Gender identity disorder is a condition in which a male or female feels a strong identification with the opposite sex.
Gender Dysphoria is an intense, psychologically painful and anxiety laden state which can intensify over time to the point of being intolerable.  Gender is our first and most intimate identity, and to have that be wrong in some way is deeply disturbing.  I have had many people say some form of:  “there is no choice, it’s either this or I kill myself”.  Furthermore, transitioning is a process of becoming who one authentically is.” — Ami B. Kaplan, LCSW

Does everyone who is transgender “transition” physically?
Many transgender people seek to bring their bodies more into alignment with their gender identity. While some Transgender people may alter their bodies with hormones and/or surgery, many do not.
Medical procedures don’t define someone as transgender. The gender they identify with in their minds does.

What is the correct way to refer to someone who is transgender?
Remember: Transgender is not a noun but an adjective. And transgender never needs an "-ed" at the end.
Incorrect: “Jake is a transgender."
Correct: Jake is a transgender person."

What is the difference between “coming out” lesbian, gay or bi and “coming out” transgender?
"Coming out" to other people as lesbian, gay, or bisexual is typically seen as revealing a "truth" that allows others to know your authentic self. The LGB community places great importance and value on the idea of being "out" in order to be happy and whole.
When a transgender person has transitioned and is living as their authentic gender - that is their "truth." The world is now seeing them as their true selves. Unfortunately, a person is transgender may no longer be seen as a "real" man or woman - and it can feel disempowering for a transgender person to have that experience.
A transgender person does not need to be "out" to everyone in order to feel happy and whole.

What do the initials FTM and MTF stand for?
FTM stands for female-to-male and refers to someone who was designated female at birth but identifies and expresses himself as a man. Many FTM transgender people prefer the term "trans man" to describe themselves.
MTF stands for male-to-female and refers to someone who was designated male at birth but who identifies and expresses herself as a woman. Many MTF transgender people prefer the term "trans woman" to describe themselves.

How do I know which pronouns to use?
Transgender people should be identified with their preferred pronoun. Often this is the pronoun that corresponds to the gender with which they identify. Not sure? It’s appropriate to respectfully ask their name and which pronouns they’d prefer. Some transgender people do not believe in a gender binary and prefer not to use pronouns typically associated with men (e.g. him) and women (e.g. her). Instead, they would prefer if people simply used their names or used a non-gendered pronoun such as “hir” or “they.”

Autism Awareness Day!

Hi all, I'm participating in RJ Scott's Autism Awareness Blog Hop! I work with individuals with Autism everyday and they are some of the most amazing people I know. Read some facts about Autism, enjoy a blurb and excerpt from my recent release, Shredding the Heart, and then enter my Rafflecopter giveaway!

Autism Facts
Autism doesn't just affect children. Children with autism grow up to be adults with autism
ASD can sometimes be detected at 18 months or younger. By age 2, a diagnosis by an experienced professional can be considered very reliable. However, many children do not receive a final diagnosis until much older. This delay means that children with ASD might not get the early help they need.
Research shows that early intervention treatment services can improve a child’s development. Early intervention services help children from birth to 3 years old (36 months) learn important skills. Services can include therapy to help the child talk, walk, and interact with others.
Autism impacts the normal development of the brain in the areas of social interaction, communication skills, and cognitive function. Individuals with autism typically have difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities

Autism is treatable, not a hopeless condition. Children with autism do progress – early intervention is key. Children with autism become adults with autism and their struggles are just as great in adulthood and childhood.
I am a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). This mean I have been trained in understanding and creating changes in behaviors using the principles of Behaviorism and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), which is the only current evidence-based practice for the treatment of individuals with the diagnosis of autism. All of the individuals on my caseload have a diagnosis of autism as well as other co-morbid disorders such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, depression, learning disabilities, speech delays and disorders, etc.
The company I work for provides services to individuals with autism from age 3 and up and who present on the severe end of the spectrum. My area of expertise is older males who are learning transition skills needed as adults and support once they transition into the adult world.  For these individuals, this means moving from services provided by the school system to funding through adult services. This is called ominously called "the cliff". Schools have resources (money/people/programs) available to to serve the needs of these individual (although many refuse to spend what is truly needed), whereas the adult world of funding for those with disabilities is severely under-funded (unethically so) and most services provided by the schools are discontinued despite need.

The current dangerous mindset is that learning is for the first 18-22 yrs of life and then no longer necessary for individuals with autism. Resources and interventions throughout the school years increase skills and independence only to be pulled away from those individuals the moment school services are done.

Why is this so treacherous? Individuals with autism eventually lose skills without consistent support from qualified interventionists. I work with individuals who are in their early twenties who can lose skills within a day without adequate support. Given the poor resources for adults with autism, all of the hard work these individuals have done is thrown away by the system. Access to as normal a life as possible for these individuals decreases. The end result is often a life in residential services where the main mode of treatment is medication.

Autism is not just a disability in childhood, but one that is lifelong. These individuals deserve the best life can give despite their disabilities. For autism awareness, I am raising awareness for adults with autism, as well as children. Adults with autism are the forgotten side of this lifelong disorder. Outlook for their lifespan is bleak, and only knowing about this tragedy, can we truly make a change for the better.

A Chance for Us, New Vampire Justics Book 2

New Vampire Justice Book 2 is complete and heading to the publisher tomorrow. Here is a rough blurb of A Chance for Us.

Justin Masters is stuck in the nightmare of waking after seven years in a catatonic state and desperately in love with the straight, NVJ officer who saved him. He’s unable to cope with the world around him. He wants to live a normal life where he's confident, in control, and with the man he loves. Too bad he’s such a mess that he fears he'll be alone forever. When he starts having dreams of being tortured and getting pleasure from the pain, he's sure he's losing his mind.

Max Kincaid's life has been off kilter since the move to Washington DC and caring for Justin. Wrapping up the chaos left by Jameson Merrick and the growing unrest between the vampires and humans, he's struggling with Justin's seeming inability to cope with the world from day to day and his need to get on with his own life. Just as he realizes Justin means more to him than a ward, Justin is attacked and his resulting needs are something Max is unsure he can give him.

Add to that drama missing humans from a high-end bite club and a plot to cover up their disappearance. As the NVJ investigates, a deeper plot involving possible human trafficking is uncovered. Justin's life is in danger, and if those who want him have their way, the result could mean war between the humans and vampires. Justin and Max are forced to overcome the threats to Justin and fight for their love.

Soul Seekers to be published by Dreamspinner!

Very excited to announce the Dreamspinner will be publishing my story Soul Seekers in May/June of 2016. Soul Seekers started as a weekly flash fiction story which I pulled to complete and submit for publishing. Here is a tentative and very rough blurb:

Levi Reed is a nineteen-year-old college student who’s lived a lifetime with hollow emotions and a darkness so deep that he's convinced he’s losing his mind. He'd give anything to feel something, anything, that’s real.

When a mysterious stranger appears, Levi is convinced the man is somehow trying to kill him. When he’s near, Levi experiences head crushing pain, surging darkness, and something surprising—real emotions for the first time ever. Meeting the man, Levi finds he isn't the harbinger of death as he’d originally thought. Jeb Monroe is an arrogant, self-assured, closed-off, handsome man with a mission. Help Levi find his missing soul.
Levi is pulled into the world of Seers and Keepers, those born with the innate abilities to manipulate souls and tasked with balancing the negative energy of the natural world. Levi learns that he’s a rare combination of a Seer and a Keeper, and he’s in danger. As Jeb and Levi grow closer, a group of zealots want to harness the darkness within Levi to cleanse the world of damaged souls. To do this, Levi will have to sacrifice someone close to Jeb. Everyone Levi loves and cares for is in danger unless he agrees to become their tool of death. But what none of them understand is that once that darkness is unleashed upon the world no one will be left alive. And it’s up to Levi to save them all.
