Sandscript on Personhood.
Life is often stranger than fiction, luckily for authors; it means we can write about absolutely anything and it will be credible.
I have been writing a novella about a robot, not a recognisable android, but a strange contraption built to be more efficient than the human body. It absorbs information at an incredible rate and when its creator has to leave it with his mother in her suburban house she wonders how she will meet the challenge of looking after a four armed, hyperactive, super intelligent machine which seems to have a mind of its own. But does ‘Robo Sapien Mark One’ have a mind?
I was intrigued to wake up to this news item the other day.
‘The European parliament has urged the drafting of a set of regulations to govern the use and creation of robots and artificial intelligence, including a form of “electronic personhood” to ensure rights and responsibilities for the most capable AI.’
In my story ‘Someone For The Weekend’ Selina Harris becomes convinced Robo has a personality, a strong personality; despite looking like a purple vacuum cleaner with no face!
I think the European parliament’s proposals are aimed more at protecting the human race than encouraging equal treatment of and socialising with, robots and androids –
‘…to ensure that robots are and will remain in the service of humans, we urgently need to create a robust European legal framework.’

When Robo escapes, Selina is as frantic as any anxious grandparent….
