New Chicago Designer, Timeless Story of Success Part I

When Kelly King was 12 she was like most 12 year old girls. She loved clothes. But she was unlike many girls in that she loved clothes so much she decided to make her passion her life path. This direction came to her when she saw her cousin drawing dresses and exclaimed, “Oh, you can do that?!”

From that time, she started drawing. Kelly kept drawing as she entered high school at Carl Sandberg High School in Orland Park and took her first home economics class where...

Working Fall Fashion Trends Into Your Work Wardrobe

fall fashion

I may work in an office dominated by a boys’ club mentality, but that doesn’t mean I have to put away my fashionista self when I walk into the office. Keeping up with fashion–from reading Vogue cover to cover every month to obsessively clicking through all of the looks from New York fashion week–is a huge part of my life, and I like to incorporate that into the place where I spend 40 (or 60 or 70) hours every week.

I have enough awkward moments in my day to day interactions without attracting...

We Asked, They Answered — What Would You Tell Yourself at 20-Years-Old?

We Asked They Answered

Shy Town Girls has turned the focus to the women in Chicago who inspire us. These women are creating paths of their own, taking risks and making choices that ultimately fulfill them. In all of our interviews, we made sure to ask each Shy Town Girl what she would tell her 20-year-old self if she could, and we just wanted to remind you of these answers, because we can’t get enough of them. Click on each woman’s picture to get back to her original interview.

Cozy Up to Fall with Barbara’s Pumpkin Bread

pumpkin

If there’s one thing that I love to do every day, it’s baking. Usually, I can convince one of the girls to take a break from her hectic life to sit down for some tea and cookies, but even if all of my darlings are busy, there are still plenty of places and people in Chicago that could use an extra plate of something delicious.

Summer is really and truly over now, which means that the days of strawberry pies and lemon squares are over. Granted, few things are better than an autumn apple pie, bu...

Working as a Shy Town Girls editorial intern was my first project, first job, first anything out of college—Katie called to interview me for the job just six days after I walked across the graduation stage. And...

Bobbie: Law School Bound

Law School

It was fall of my freshman year when I first sat in on Political Theory 101 at the University of Chicago. A tall, stoic man glided into the classroom and the students became silent and serious. He picked up a dusty piece of chalk and wrote on the blackboard J-U-S-T-I-C-E, and his first words were, “What does this mean?” We spent the remainder of the hour and a half deciphering what justice meant to each of us. As he led us to the answer by a string of Socratic questions, it became c...
