The older man had shown his frustration, banging the gavel repeatedly to maintain order at the formal meeting. There was bad business going on around town, rumors of drug running, even though the club had gotten out of that shit years ago. Brick and Betsey had worked hard to get the club out of the one-percenter limelight and into legit businesses without feeling the loss of income, but people had long memories when it came to the bad stuff. He’d spent the afternoon searching corners with a club prospect, hanging around, looking for leads. Nothing. It was hard enough to make himself understood, let alone get anyone to communicate with him, and the prospect was either too scared or too stupid to try.
When he’d arrived at the bar tonight, he’d slumped heavily into his spot at the bar and tapped at the new girl for his coffee. She looked at him like she was ready to run out the door. Real pretty eyes, but fuck this shit! His patience was at an end. He stood up and thumped the bar again, knowing his frustration was showing and he was taking it out on an innocent girl. Betsey was there in an instant, talking fast and light, pouring his coffee. The girl settled and went back to work, steadily if uneasily.
Too soft, thought Mute. Pretty girl but too soft for the life. Probably not stick it out. Leave in a week.

Deep down, Mikayla understood Nolan was taking over her heart. Ethan, her boyfriend, had come out of nowhere, and she thought their love was the real deal until Nolan appeared in her life.
“No, Mikayla, get that out of your mind,” she said out loud to stun her back to reality.
“Who are you talking to?” Nolan asked, walking by her room.

Her eyes tried to avoid his gaze, but the more she felt his stare, the more it drew her eyes to look at his. “Mikayla, tell me to leave the room, and I will.”
She sat silently, not saying a word. “Mikayla, tell me not to touch you, and I won’t.”
Again, she said nothing.
“Mikayla, tell me you don’t have feelings for me, and I will believe you.”
Again, she couldn’t speak. At the moment, she was mute.
“Tell me not to kiss you right now, and I won’t.”
Sitting down next to her, he moved her face to his, leaning his head toward her. “This is it, sweetness, no turning back.” Right then, she leaned in, placing her lips on his as their connection strengthened with their first kiss. It was soft. How could his lips be so tender, she thought as their tongues danced together? She couldn’t pull away. In her mind with her judgment clouded she told herself, I don’t want to stop this, not now, not ever.

Easing her up, he brought her close, deepening the kiss. She slowly yielded to him, uncertain at first, but bolder as he held his patience. He liked she had to think about what she wanted to do. Fresh desire swept over him. His fingers gripped the worn fabric of her granny shirt, and he yearned to yank it off her but sensed that would be too much. There were too many unanswered questions at the moment. However, he was a patient man, and he knew she felt the sparks zapping between them as much as he did.
