Excerpt
My ear is stroking something so soft and smooth. It’s comforting and inviting, so I rub against the softness, reveling in sensation, sighing.
And then the something moves.
“Hey,” Silas says, his voice coming from above. “She’s awake.”
I open my eyes, then shut them quickly to make the spinning stop. The world is full of random objects that move in and out, forward and back, my depth perception put in a blender and puréed.
“What?” I whisper, his hand on my shoulder. I want him to stroke my hair, to bring me ginger ale, to keep me safe and let me relax.
“You fainted,” he says, voice somehow both taut with worry and gentle with concern. “Right into my arms.”
“You have good arms.”
“I like them.”
“So do I.”
I roll in his lap and look up into those bright eyes full of mirth and worry. “Can you sit up?” he asks.
“No.”
“That bad?”
“It feels so nice here. I could sleep here forever.”
Someone clears their throat in the distance. It’s a masculine sound.
“She okay?” the throat-clearer asks from another continent away. Or maybe the front seat. It’s hard to tell.
“I think so,” Silas responds, easing me up slowly.
“I did not consent to sitting up,” I murmur, snuggling in.
“And I didn’t consent to being your pillow.”
“But you’re a good pillow. The best pillow ever.”
“Jane?” Silas asks slowly. “Are you on something?”
“On something? I’m on you.” My muscles go slack, body in need of this all-too-short moment to enjoy being at rest in a place of sanctuary.
Rumbling makes my head move lightly as he–is he laughing? “No. I mean, did you take a drug, or a pill? You’re acting very weird.”
“Have we met? Come on. You try going through what I’ve been through these last few days, then faint, and come out of it perfectly sane,” I grouse.
As I come to a full upright position with my back against the upholstered seat, I realize it’s not just me, Silas, and–oh. The throat-clearer is Duff.
Drew is behind him, their heads huddled together as they speak through the window.
“I’m fine,” I lie. “Just tired and a little weary from having my entire life blitzed to smithereens.”

Excerpt
He stood as she wrapped the towel around the ice and applied it to her ankle. "Ahh, sweet Lord. God, that hurts." She squeezed her eyes shut. This pain in her ankle was starting to feel expensive.
He must have read her mind. "I think you need to go to the hospital."
"No thanks." She couldn't afford it, although she be damned if she told him that.
"It'll be my treat."
She opened one eye and stared at him from underneath her false eyelash. His lips crooked in a half-smile. "You sure know how to show a girl a good time, but no thanks." She shot Jonathan a look. "Can you make sure Henry here gets home okay? He's been drinking too much to drive, and I don't think his buddy's much better off."
"Sure." Jonathan waved at Henry. "Come on. I'll get you a Lyft." He turned and then shot a glance back over his shoulder. "You can wait out in the lobby."
It was a dismissal, and Henry had to know it. He looked at her, reluctant to go. "Here." He scrounged around on a nearby table until he found a piece of paper and a stub of a pencil. He wrote something and handed her the paper. "If you need anything, anything at all, give me a call."
She looked at the paper. Henry Stanton. 555-3022. She stuck it in her cleavage, momentarily forgetting her pain when a flush swept over Henry's face. "What? It's not like I have a pocket in this get-up."

Excerpt
Once she was inside the elevator, she jabbed at the button again, this time trying to make the doors close. She really was shit out of luck this morning. Just as they began to slide together, a set of long, strong fingers slipped between them, and they slid open again. And there he was.He stepped inside with a smile and a nod, then pressed to go to the eighteenth floor. Shit. That was her floor. He couldn’t go there.“What do you need?”She stared at him blankly. “Need?” Could he somehow see inside her mind, see all the months of a dry spell that had gone on way too long? Or could he see the images floating inside her head? Images of what the two of them could do if the elevator somehow got stuck. The corners of his lips curved upward again. That just might be the sexiest smile she’d ever seen. “Which floor?”“Oh!” Well, wasn’t she an idiot? Her mind raced. She couldn’t get off the elevator with him. He might think she was following him. “Seventeen.”He hit the button, but before they started to move, the doors slid open again. Thank God for that! Two men and two women came in and turned to face the doors, leaving Grace and the Big Cat alone in the silent space behind them. Grace gripped the tray with her two coffee cups and stared determinedly at the numbers above the door. She’d always suspected this was the world’s slowest elevator, but this morning’s ride confirmed it. Every second was torture. She could smell him—all citrus and man. She’d swear he was looking at her, but she refused to allow herself to sneak a peek. He’d catch her.She tried looking down at the coffee cups, but that just made a strand of her hair fall across her face. She wrinkled her nose and tried to blow it away, then she froze. There were those long, strong fingers again. They brushed her cheek as they took the errant strand and tucked it behind her ear. If the heat had surged through her when he held the door open, then her blood was boiling in her veins right now. All the little hairs on the back of her neck stood up and sent shivers racing down her spine. Even her scalp tingled. She turned. How could she not? Those big brown eyes were twinkling with amusement. “I hope I didn’t overstep? You looked uncomfortable.”She shook her head mutely. What could she say, even if she could find the breath to speak? The elevator stopped, and she silently begged the people in front of her not to get out. They couldn’t leave her alone in here with this guy—she would not be responsible for her actions. To her relief, they didn’t. Instead, two more got in, and that was quite a crowd. Everyone shuffled back a little. She had no clue how it happened, but somehow, she ended up face to face with Big Cat. She was in the corner, and he was right there in front of her, staring down into her eyes, that quirky little smile playing on his face again. She’d had a laugh with Spider the other night when one of the customers had tried hitting on her in the coffee shop. She’d told Spider that her sexual desires were dormant. Hell, had she been wrong about that. Standing here, face-to-face with this guy, she discovered that her sexual desires weren’t just active—oh, no, they were rampant. She was grateful for the tray of coffee she was gripping. It gave her hands something to do that kept them from reaching up to touch his face, maybe sinking into his hair or even sliding around his waist.“Are you okay?”She nodded rapidly, meeting his gaze briefly. Even she heard the gasp she made when he rested his hand on her hip. What was he doing? You didn’t just do that to a stranger in a crowded elevator.“Are you sure?” He looked worried now. She looked down to where his hand rested on her hip. Except it wasn’t his hand—it was the purse the woman in front of her had slung over her shoulder. Grace couldn’t help it. She laughed. Wow, she needed to get laid. Okay, the guy was attractive, but he shouldn’t affect her this badly. “I’m fine, thanks. Have a great day.” She edged her way to the front and squeezed out through the doors before they had a chance to open fully on the seventeenth floor. She couldn’t help it. She had to look back before they closed. He’d made his way to the front, too. He met her gaze with a smile.Bye, Big Cat. She bid him a sad farewell. At least, in the real world, the world where she’d never see him again. She had a feeling her imagination would be seeing a lot more of him in the nights to come. She smiled back at him; there was no harm now. And he winked! The arrogant prick actually winked at her. She stood there staring as the doors slid shut, and then he was gone.

Author Bio

I'm SJ, a coffee addict, lover of chocolate and drinker of good red wines. I'm a lost soul and a hopeless romantic. Reading and writing are necessary parts of who I am. Though perhaps not as necessary as coffee! I can drink coffee without writing, but I can't write without coffee.

I grew up loving romance novels, my first boyfriends were book boyfriends, but life intervened, as it tends to do, and I wandered down the paths of non fiction for many years. My life changed completely a couple of years ago and I returned to Romance to find my escape.

I write 'Sweet n Steamy' stories because to me there is enough angst and darkness in real life. My favorite romances are happy escapes with a focus on fun, friendships and happily-ever-afters, just like the ones I write.

These days I live in beautiful Montana, the last best place. If I'm not reading or writing, you'll find me just down the road in the park - Yellowstone. I have deer, eagles and the occasional bear for company, and I like it that way :0)

The Consequence of Rejection by Rachel Van Dyken

Title: The Consequence of RejectionA Standalone Consequence NovelAuthor: Rachel Van DykenGenre: Romantic Comedy
Release Date: March 26, 2018

Blurb

You know the universe is trying to tell you something when you get struck by lightning, but only after getting hit on by the elderly, almost getting run over by a semi, and running into the one who got away.
Why do they say it like that anyway?
Like I accidentally lost her when she was the one that got in the car with my best friend and left me.
The day after I proposed.
We were eighteen.
I wanted forever.
She didn't.
It's been ten years.
I tried to move on, tried to get married, had that same wedding crashed by my now best friend who says the only way for me to stop pissing off the universe, is to gain closure with the one woman I can't forget.
So I do it.
I embark on a journey down memory lane that not only lands me in prison but on the receiving end of a fist fight in front of the entire town, this naturally happens after drunken pool sex, climbing the same girl's window, and getting threatened at gunpoint by her father.
To say the universe is trying to tell me something anything, is a giant understatement.
I just hope I survive the message.
And then, I hope I survive her—again.

Full breasts spilled over into a small black bikini that left nothing to the imagination, it barely covered nipple for that matter, and the bottoms? Well she had to keep adjusting them lets just say high school bathing suits ten years later look small. In the best way possible. Head held high she walked right by me to Max, grabbed a shot, took it, then sucked the lime he held out in front of her. I growled. Max winked at me. “Something wrong, man?”I reached for the non existent gun at my side, which just made him grin harder as he kept handing out alcohol to parents of toddlers. Because thats the type of party it was. Almost everyone started talking about their kids, retirement, stock portfolios, vacation time, and babies. It was almost too depressing for words. I had all those things but what I’d always wanted. A family. Babies. Maddy. She shared a sideway’s glance with me. I reached for her, but she pulled away and ran full speed towards the pool and did a giant canon ball. People cheered. While I watched as wet cold water ran down her curvy body, my gaze was so tranfixed on her erect nipples I’m surprised nobody pulled me aside about my current situation of arousal. Cold water. Fast. I chased after her, jumped in. And felt the warm buzz of alcohol fill my veins just as I popped up and saw Max follow, balls first, in my face. I ducked just in time so I didn’t get a fist full of balls. The guy only laughed once we both popped up. I swam towards Maddy, and tugged her against me. “Stop running.”“I’m not.” Her breath came out raspy. “I’m just…reliving old times, isn’t that what you wanted? So we could have closure?”Why did it feel like she was turning the tables on me. “Yeah,” I said slowly, “But—“Her kiss was swift. Hard. Fast, and oh so very punishing as I gaped into her mouth and pinned her against he side of the pool. Music filled the air out of nowhere from somewhere outside, it pounded into my ears the way I wanted to pound into her. I grinned against her mouth as she wrapped her legs around my waist. And then Reid cast a shadow over us and started pouring vodka over our heads. Maddy tilted her head back and opened her mouth while I leaned in and licked it off her chin. People cheered. “Guys!” Someone yelled. “Keep it down, someones going to call the cops!”“Cops?” Max laughed loudly. “I am the law, bitches!” The music blared. “Plus, we already got our cop here.” He pointed while I took another shot. People cheered. And then Maddy squeezed her thighs. Yeah the cops were coming alright.
