An Impossible Rescue by Annamaria Bazzi

Why hasn’t he signed the divorce papers? Money, that’s why. The no good lowlife always wants money from me.Just three months after the wedding, she’d realized he’d married her for her wealth. Thank God her father was still alive and owned the business her mother had created and turned into a multimillion-dollar company. Dad had supported Mother and had taken care of all the accounting for the business.Rising, Julia sauntered to the kitchen. She glanced around the open architecture, which had made her fall in love with the house to begin with. Dad always wanted to see her happy, so he’d bought her the five thousand square foot home as a wedding present, with just one catch—the house would remain in his name.“Why would you do such a thing?” Her voice rose.“Calm down. You’re a woman in love and don’t see what I see. One day, you’ll thank me.”Those words kept coming back, and she praised God for her father’s wisdom. Every time Damien ran dry, he came back and asked her for money then disappeared for weeks at a time, sometimes months. Another conversation came to the forefront, and she leaned on the island, playing it through her mind.“Why are you doing this? We love each other.”“Your business is not profitable yet, but one day it will be,” her dad said. “You’re too much like your mother, God rest her soul, and your business will bring in millions. I don’t want him to walk away with the sweat of your brow.”She waved the papers she held at him. “This is a prenuptial agreement, are you serious?”“I’m dead serious. Mark my words, the day will come when you’ll thank me.”Julia sighed. “Thank you, Daddy,” she whispered. “Mom, you married a wise man. Not like me, who married a complete jerk.”She opened the refrigerator and took out the bottle of white wine she’d opened a few nights ago, pouring some in a Waterford wineglass. After corking the bottle and placing it back in the fridge, she curled up on the sofa. Staring into the shadows of evening, she beat herself for having been so blind with respect to Damien. “Love is blind” turned out to be so true. Damn! Could I have been more stupid?Disgusted with herself to the point she couldn’t enjoy the book, she placed the paperback back on the bookshelf and went up to the master suite to enjoy a hot bath. Julia lit all the aromatic candles and filled the tub. While the water poured into it, she ran downstairs to pick up the wineglass she’d forgotten in the gathering room.Almost asleep in the jetted tub and with steam filling the large room, it took a while before she heard her cell buzzing. Who could possibly be calling at this hour? She tightened her lips, and scrunched her brow. She stood and wrapped her body in a plush white towel. This was supposed to be her time to relax. Anger and anxiety rushed through her.“Hello?” she said with a bit more force than she wanted.“Hey, babe, I’ll be home for Christmas.”“Damien, where are you?”“I’m in the middle of an investment deal in Qatar.”Had she heard right? “Where?”“Qatar, baby. You know, the Middle East.”Not in the mood to hear about his new gamble in whatever kind of business venture he’d embroiled himself in, she hung up and shut off her iPhone, returning to the tub of lukewarm water. Letting some of it out, she refilled the tub with steaming water then sank down to her chin and closed her eyes. If anyone needed her, they could just show up at the house. When her bath cooled again, she slipped into her robe, tied it at her waist, and stretched out on the bed.Cold crept into her bones, and she shivered. Darkness surrounded her. How long had she slept? Sitting up, she grabbed her cell phone and turned it back on. Goodness, it was 8:15 p.m.Pangs of hunger burned her stomach, but she didn’t feel like cooking at such a late hour. She dialed for delivery.“Hello, I’d like to order veal Parmesan….”With the order on the way, she slipped into silky pajamas, French braided her milk-chocolate brown hair, and went downstairs to wait for the food to arrive. The gourmet kitchen surrounding her had been a joy to create with the help of Marcello DiStoia, a wonderful designer of kitchens and baths. A place where she’d dreamed of cooking with her newlywed husband. He did help for the first few months of marriage, but then all his failed ventures took him to different corners of the earth as he looked to gamble in varied “business opportunities” as he called them. Apparently, now he was in Qatar, of all places. She rolled her eyes and closed her hands in tight fists. A few deep breaths and she let it all go, reminding herself Damien was not worth a single thought.A sigh of relief escaped her when the doorbell rang announcing the arrival of the food.“Thank you.” She took the package from the older man, giving him a twenty-dollar tip.“Have a good evening.”Before closing the door, she stuck her head out to admire a few flurries. Only the beginning of October, it seemed too early for snow. In Virginia, it almost never snowed until after Christmas. Back at the counter, she laid out one place setting and sat on one of the high chairs. As she shoved the first bite in her mouth, the cell rang. Huffing, she reached for it to see who called.“Hello, Dad. What’s up?”“You were supposed to call to let me know if you want to go out Saturday night to grab some dinner and a movie with your old dad.”“Oh my God!” She raised her hand to her chest. “So sorry, I forgot all about calling. Yes, I want to go out with you on Saturday. What movie did you want to see?”“I thought we could just see whatever is playing at the Bird Theater, since you enjoy eating at Can Can.”“Sounds perfect! I love going to Can Can.”“I’ll pick you up at seven thirty.” The higher pitch in his voice let her know how happy and excited he felt about the date. The phone disconnected.Ever since a little girl, she’d loved her special moments alone with her father. He’d involved himself raising his only child and sharing the duties of a soccer mom. Julia had loved that about her father, and she’d grown close to him, developing a unique and open relationship. After clearing the counter and throwing the boxes away, Julia went back to her room to brush her teeth and slip between the covers. Exhaustion took over, and when she rested her head on the pillow she fell asleep.

She'd looked up at him and gave him the most beautiful smile he'd ever seen. In that moment, he'd promised himself to do whatever it took to make her smile like that every day for the rest of their lives. "I'm perfect. You?"
He laughed at her question because he couldn't remember a time when he'd ever been happier than right there and then. "I spent the whole night making love to the woman I love. I woke up with her pressed against me, and now, I'm about to start my morning showing her much I love her sassy ass, so I'd say I'm better than perfect." He'd flipped her on her back, positioning himself between her spread thighs, his body weighing down on top of her. His woman loved him on top, one of the many things he'd learned the night before which he planned on using to his advantage, every chance he got.
"She's a lucky lady then." She'd ran her hands down his back, down to his ass, squeezing him lightly.
"Nah, I'm the lucky one." And he had meant that with every fiber in his body. He'd kissed her passionately and urgently until he had her squirming under him, begging for more, and God, had he given her more. One of the best things about Amanda was that no matter how much he gave, she was right there with him, letting her body take over, meeting him thrust for thrust. They'd spent the rest of the morning in bed, making love and ordering room service until it was time for them to leave.

Apocalypta Z by Maer Wilson

Apocalypta Z by Maer Wilson Genre: Sci Fi / Post Apocalyptic / Zombie
Cover Designer: M. Joseph MurphyRelease Date: October 8, 2015

First - meteors. Now - zombies. Ninety-nine percent of humans and animals have become zombified, leaving the rest scrambling to survive. Maddie Worthing and Nick Stanton are among the few not infected. They’re gathering survivors and doing what they can to preserve life in their isolated desert town. Joined by the remaining townspeople and a few scientists, they search for a way to make it through the apocalypse.
The key to humanity’s continued existence may lie within the mystery surrounding Maddie’s puppy. But they need to survive the roving gangs, crazy scientists and troublemakers within their own ranks in order to discover it. "Not since World War Z have zombies been presented in such a unique light. Give Wilson some props, and her little dog too." Danielle DeVor, Author of Sorrow’s Point

An eerie keening shattered the morning air: the apocalypse had begun.Of course Maddie Worthing didn’t know that. She just thought her dogs had to pee.She slowed the car and darted glances at the empty desert to see what else could have set her dogs off. She saw exactly what she’d seen for the last two hours along the two-lane highway – nothing. She didn’t see the white raven fly ahead of her to the east.“Damn it girls, settle down,” she yelled over their ear-splitting howls. “You scared the hell out of me. Inside voices!” She rolled the windows down a little, hoping the wind would settle them. They were ten miles from the rest stop. She hated stopping only thirty minutes from home, but the dogs continued to whine, although much softer than before.Minutes later, Maddie pulled into the rest stop. She flexed her fingers as she released them from the wheel. The arthritis and long drive were making them uncooperative. One car was parked nearby, but no one was around. Holding Cienna’s leash, she unfastened the small poodle from her car seat and crawled into the back to do the same for Chloe. But Cienna pulled her leash from Maddie’s cramped fingers and shot out of the car.Maddie moved fast, shutting the car door with Chloe inside. She ran after the puppy as fast as being slightly overweight and no longer young would allow. The fear for Cienna triggered adrenalin which helped.Exasperated with Cienna for running off and with herself for her hands that didn’t work as well as when she was younger, she called Cienna as she headed toward the bushes behind the restrooms. There was an odd smell in the air, but Maddie wrote it off; it was a rest stop after all.“Cienna, you better get your butt back here right now or you will live in the corner for the next year!” Maddie’s voice reflected her fear that the puppy would run toward the highway. She continued toward the bushes where the puppy had disappeared. Finding a long stick, she used it to prod into the underbrush, calling for Cienna all the while. The pup had a habit of running under bushes. She’d done the same thing at home on their large lot. So Cienna went into in a pen when she was outside. That stopped the dog from disappearing into the low hanging branches of the mesquite trees for hours. Cienna had not mastered “Come here” very well.Maddie heard a sound behind her and turned to see three figures lurching from the restroom. She peered over her sunglasses in disbelief. They were dressed nicely enough, but their clothes had been ripped as if they had been in a horrible accident. One had blood dripping down the side of her face. Another had his head caved in on one side with strange growths, almost like small antlers, on the other. Maddie looked around for cameras. Had she stumbled onto one of those prank shows, maybe? Or a zombie movie set?If so, it must have been a B movie. The makeup on these people was not very realistic. The blood looked rather thin as it trickled down their faces, but there was certainly enough gore. A man appeared to drag his intestines behind him. Maddie shook her head as she looked around again, forgetting to call for Cienna for a few seconds.“Sorry if I stumbled onto your set,” she called to the figures approaching her. “I didn’t see any signs or anything.”There was no answer as the figures came closer. Once they were only yards away, Maddie’s heart dropped into her stomach. That wasn’t makeup. Makeup didn’t have that god-awful smell. She made a few strangled mewling sounds before letting loose with a long scream. She threw the stick at the nearest figure and ran for the car, screaming for Cienna.

Voices by Clarissa Johal
"Sometimes the ghosts from your past…are real."

Buy Voices:Amazon - BN - Kobo - Smashwords - iBooksExcerpt:They got their food and sat at one of the dining room tables in the corner. Moira pretended not to notice a couple of raised eyebrows from the other patients. “How long have you been able to see them?” “Who?” “Your ghosts.” “For a while,” Moira replied vaguely. Adam picked up his dinner roll and took a large bite. “My guess is longer than just ‘a while.’” Moira’s attention was captured again by his green eye, so sharply contrasting his brown one. He was almost too intense to look at. Almost. “How did you get the scratches?” His gaze settled on her cheek. “One of the other patients started a fight,” she said, covering her cheek with her hand. “I guess she doesn’t like me.” “What’s not to like? You seem okay to me.” Oddly, his statement made her stomach do a flip-flop. “Thanks.” “You know how some people are, quick to judge.” He dropped his fork and bent to retrieve it. Moira pictured herself reaching over and brushing back the lock of dark hair that fell across his forehead. She glanced nervously over her shoulder. Jack and Isabella were strangely silent. Isabella was probably just trying to figure out what childish thing she could say, but Jack…she knew that Jack was sizing Adam up; he did it with every man she came into contact with. And she knew he wouldn’t appreciate her noticing how handsome Adam was either. “I’m sure they upped her meds,” Adam said as he tossed the fork onto the table again. “This place sucks. It won’t do a damn thing but make you spill your guts, drive you crazy or turn you into a zombie. Last pills they sent me home with made me feel like my skull was being split with a meat cleaver.” “So you stopped taking them?” “Yep.” “How did you end up back here?” “My brother called the cops. Lying asshole, I should be used to it by now,” Adam muttered. “I was staying with him until I got my shit together, but he walked in on me as I was flushing my pill down the toilet and freaked out.” A look of distress crossed his face. “Whatever, I’ll be out soon enough.” He finished his roll and started on an apple. “What did your doctor put you on? Who is your doctor anyways?” “Um, he hasn’t put me on anything yet. I see Dr. Cassano.” “Ahh, Dr. Cassano.” He raised an eyebrow. “I hear the nurses talking about him all the time.” “He’s nice enough.” “I see Dr. Leo. He’s an asshole.” He spit out the bite of his apple and without getting up, tossed the rest of it into the garbage, basketball style. “Have you spoken to your ghosts about leaving?” “I’ve …tried.” “They won’t?” “No.” “You want me to ask them for you?” “Seriously?” She stayed an initial surge of hopefulness and reminded herself that Adam was in here because he was crazy. Not like her at all. “I can try.” He settled back and stared right at Isabella. That’s a fluke, she thought. He just picked an empty spot next to me. “You need to go,” Adam said simply. “Moira doesn’t want you around her.” He waited a beat. “Wow, she’s hostel. Kids can be such brats. I’ll try your other one.” He looked right at where Jack stood. The other empty spot next to me, she reminded herself. “Leave. Your time is done, tall guy. You have no business being here anymore.” She felt Jack’s presence crackle with anger. “He’s even more hostel than she is,” Adam said. “Sucks for you.” Moira felt her hopes deflate. Well, it’s not as if he can really see them, she thought. “Thanks anyways.” He aimed his plastic cup towards the trash and tossed it. It missed and rolled towards the kitchen door. “Damn. No points for me.” The cook leaned out the kitchen door and waved his ladle at them. “Stop tossing your garbage everywhere, you’re getting milk on the floor. Somebody’s got to mop that up.” “I hate that a culinary genius like you has to do that,” Adam called back with a straight face. “Smart ass,” the cook replied. “You lucky I don’t spit in your food.” Adam held his hands up in mock surrender. “I know you say that with love, Nathan.” He picked up his tray. “See you around.” Moira watched him swagger away. It suddenly dawned on her that she hadn’t mentioned Isabella was a child or said anything about Jack. Lucky guess.
