Bringer of Chaos: The Origin of Pietas by Kayelle Allen

Bringer of Chaos: The Origin of Pietas by Kayelle Allen Series: Bringer of Chaos, Book 1Genre: Science Fiction, Space Opera, Young Adult, Teen, Genetic Engineering Science Fiction, Military Science Fiction, Dystopian Science Fiction
Publisher: Romance Lives Forever Books
Cover Designer: The Author's SecretRelease Date: May 1, 2016

Two enemy warriors: one human, one immortal. Different in belief, alike in spirit, marooned together on an alien world.
Imprisoned and in isolation over a year without food or water, the immortal Pietas survives. Though broken in body, his intellect and will are intact, thanks to Six, the special ops warrior who captured him, but kept him sane. The warrior had no hand in his deprivation and, like Pietas, was betrayed by his own kind. When Pietas is abandoned on an alien world with nothing but his honor--and Six--he must find and rejoin other immortal exiles. After centuries of war, Pietas detests humans and kills them on sight, but he is too damaged to continue on his own. Though he despises needing help, he allows Six to nurture and restore him to full strength, and then accompany him. As they cross the planet together on foot, the immortal begins to wonder if he has found his first human friend, or if Six is loyal only because Pietas could keep the others from tearing him to shreds. This human will either be his closest living friend, or the one whose betrayal will trigger all-out vengeance by the most powerful immortal ever born.
Immortal. Warrior. Outcasts. Traitors took everything. Except their honor.

In this scene from Bringer of Chaos, Pietas, leader of a group of immortals called Ultras, addresses the reader directly, and promises to tell his story, if the person dares to know the truth.
You are human. Unworthy.
A foreword from Pietas
This book you hold is being presented as fiction, but it did happen. It is as real as the air you breathe. It is not a first-person story, but it does follow my point of view.
I would never have allowed a human to know these things, but a friend persuaded me there can be no vengeance unless those in the wrong know what they did. When one has wronged another, one must face the consequences.
Having been persuaded to tell the story, I now allow it to be placed into your hands. I want you to know the truth. Why? Because other Ultras have hidden the truth. Buried it beneath fables and false retellings, as if you were a child unable to bear harsh reality. Unwilling to face the consequences of what your kind has done.
Above all, I will not lie to you.
When I come for you, I want the satisfaction of seeing your regret for what your ancestors did to my kind. I want to see your fear, and taste your terror.
This is no horror story. It's merely science fiction. Tell yourself it is only fable, if that will help you sleep. By all means, human, do sleep.
Read this, if you dare to know the truth.
~ Pietas
Prologue
In the twenty-seventh century on Earth, genslaves were supreme among all humanity's genetic creations. They fulfilled man's every desire. They recuperated from disease and injury so fast they were all but immortal. Their strength far exceeded man's. Specific, ingrained abilities limited upward and lateral movement among the servant classes, keeping genslaves in jobs with no chance of advancement.Bred to require little rest, labor-genslaves performed menial and repetitive tasks, with enough intelligence to work, but not enough to aspire beyond their station. Warriors possessed unmeasured strength and massive size. They fought humanity's wars, died so man didn't have to suffer, and were reborn to fight again. The physically weaker classes had more intelligence. Healer-genslaves obtained vast amounts of skill in medicine and designed cures for disease. Artists created beauty. Nurturers and teachers cared for humanity's children. Scientist-genslaves designed additional genslaves, to make man's life even more pleasant. All classes were created with genetic shackles of obedience, making them content to remain subservient. While humanity relaxed, secure in a position of power, genslave-scientists created a new order of beings with free will. It will be argued through the ages whether the creation arose from faulty programming, or a desire for freedom, but the new creatures were not hampered by genetic restraints. They took the name Ultra, and did as they pleased. Ultras were brains and brawn. No matter how difficult the problem, Ultras solved it. No matter how horrific or grisly their wounds, Ultras survived. Disease did not touch them. Starvation did not stop them. Even death did not hold them long. The creation of Ultras changed everything. When Ultras demanded freedom, humans claimed them soulless, inferior, unworthy, and undeserving of equality. Humans tried to silence them, and when that failed, punished them. The Ultras seized their liberty by force. Emboldened by the Ultras' success, other genslaves rebelled, and began calling themselves Ultras as well. The First Cycle of Wars devastated half the galaxy. In the Terran Crescent and the Colonies of Man, power tilted toward Ultras. They ruled the starways. Ultras tightened restrictions and limited trade, allowing mankind meager freedoms, and no more mercy than man had shown them. Humans served, subservient to their former slaves. Not all genslaves wanted war. Some concealed their genetic differences and abilities, and lived among humans--as human. The rumor that genslaves hid among them spawned the Human Pure movement. Purges wiped out non-human traits and enhanced sensory perceptions. Humanity weakened itself by outlawing genetic healing or correction. They identified anything and anyone considered unnatural. Anyone different hid it or faced death by fire, from which Ultras could not revive. For the human underground, the weapon of choice became a flamethrower.Among Ultras, leadership arose that considered humans redeemable. They sought to allow humans more freedom, and give them a voice in their own government. They hoped a kinder relationship would bring an end to galaxy-wide conflict. They hoped peace would halt senseless death and destruction, foster growth, and increase trade. In 4536 AD, after centuries of war, Ultras and humans met to discuss a truce. But that is according to legend. Here, you will learn the truth.

AUDIBLE ✯ AMAZON AUDIO

Audible review 5✯ by Anna Salamatin (March 22, 2016)
"Smexy Christmas"
Would you listen to Unwrapping Noel again? Why? Sure, it's a true to life story line. Noel could easily be one of my friends or colleges.
What did you like best about this story? It's about mature, adult people with life experiences under their belts. They are dealing with stuff that life really throws at you.
Which character – as performed by Sara Gordon – was your favorite? She really brought Noel to life for me. I felt her emotions. I also liked how she portrays Anna, and brings her out of the shadowy side lines so to speak.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting? I did listen to it in one day.
Any additional comments? This is a captivating, emotional, and romantically erotic romance about not just finding love, (after a devastating betrayal) but finding THE LOVE, and having the courage to trust again. ... Noel's story just spoke to me.

Sara Gordon
How long have you been narrating audio books?A: Since June 2015
What made you decide to do this?A: I took a voiceover class as I was very interested in animation and commercial voiceover. Audiobooks were something that we touched upon in class and was intrigued by the process.
Is it hard to ‘get into character’?A: It depends. Some days, external events happen that can kind of dampen the day, but when I get in the booth, it’s pretty easy. Knowing the characters and knowing yourself is what makes it smooth.
Are there any characters you’ve narrated that you identify with?A: There is something I can relate to in every character I’ve done, but not one in particular that I identify with wholly.
What are your favorite genres to narrate?A: Children’s books. They are so much fun and you can let your imagination go and try new voices. It gives you a license to be larger than life. Those characters can be anything and you have to decide, if say the character was a tree, you know, what would a tree sound like?
Are sex scenes difficult for you?A: A little. While I do work from home, it can still feel a little strange and awkward. You have to plan things out about breaths and if it makes sense to keep it during the editing process or is it becoming too breathy and what not. Sometimes I can hear people in the apartment next to me and I wonder, ‘Can they hear me?’ Ha ha, I’m not as open in my own sexuality sometimes and I think that’s the hardest part about doing sex scenes. But, like anything else, when you remember that you have a job to do, you make it work.
Is there any genre you don’t narrate?A: At this point in time, not really. I’m open to almost anything.
How was it working with Jennifer Theriot? A: Absolutely wonderful. She was very quick to answer any question as well as generous and patient during the process of recording, editing, and reviewing each audio chapter. It was a great experience.
Do you have a career aside from narrating?A: I am a singer and actor in New York. To help pay the bills, I’ve had many “day jobs”, mostly as a nanny or in retail.
Any favorite authors you’ve worked with?A: The authors that I’ve worked with have been great! This is actually only my second audiobook but I’m excited to keep going and maybe one day record something for a book or author that I admire.
How important are strong female characters to you?A: Very important. I like female characters that are well rounded, strong but still vulnerable, and hopefully not one dimensional. When you have well rounded characters, that’s what creates a relatability- a way to connect better to them and the overall story. We need more of that for female characters because women are not one dimensional. Representation in every form is important.
Do you narrate both male and female voices?A: Yes. Sometimes I try to record the male voices in the morning when I’ve almost just woken up and my voice isn’t warmed up. It’s lower then and the sound just seems more realistic.
What does Sara Gordon do for fun? What are your hobbies and interests?A: I love to paint, sing, and visit family in Brooklyn. I used to do races and half marathons and such and now I’m starting to get back into it.
Does your ‘significant other’ (if applicable) support your narrating career?A: While it’s not applicable for a significant other, my family and friends are very supportive of my work and what I want to do with my life.

Not Afraid to Love You by Jude Ouvrard

Lilly McCarthy thought she had found the one, until an unexpected side of Dave left her body bruised and her pride hurt.
Living in fear, she knows she has to do something before the unimaginable happens. A timely phone call provides Lilly a means to escape but is her family prepared to face her nightmares?
While Lilly takes the time to heal and regain control of her life, an unexpected source of support appears in the form of her brother's best friend - and her old crush - Lennox.
Lilly hesitates to take on a new relationship, but Lennox is not giving up. He wants Lilly to find her way and be herself again, the relaxed and easygoing girl she used to be.
Can the love of a good man convince this scared and frightened woman to trust again? Or is it only going to push her away?

Dave booked us a flight for tonight. My clothes and toiletries are packed and ready to go. My suitcase is waiting by the door and so are my heels. This is going to be so much fun. My heart is fluttering just at the thought of seeing them. To please Dave, I decide to wear my red skirt that he loves so much, paired with my black see-through blouse. He’s going to love it.
We’re leaving after dinner, so I best get that done. He’s been working from home today and didn’t really eat much of his lunch so he must be starving.
In the kitchen, while I’m preparing a green garden salad and grilled chicken, Dave shows up and asks for a glass of wine.
“Of course,” I say getting him a glass of his favorite red. Some guys like football or hockey, Dave likes wine. A lot.
“Here, baby.” I hand him his glass and right away, he smells its perfume before taking a sip. While he tastes it, his eyes close and I can see how much he loves it. He always purchases very expensive bottles and drinks them with passion until the last drop. No wine goes to waste in this house—ever.
Setting his glass on the counter, he wraps his arms around me and I like it. I love the feeling of him near me, holding me against him. He always seems to do it in a dominant kind of way.
“Why are you dressed so sexy today, Lilly-Rose?” He pauses, his nose on my neck taking in my perfume—breathing me in. “Are you planning on seeing someone else tonight?”
“Absolutely not, I wanted to please you and be sexy for you. You know me better than that.”
I can’t believe he thinks I’m wearing his favorite clothes for someone else. It doesn’t make sense.
“I’m not sure I do. You’ll have to change before we leave. Nobody else gets to see your curves like I do. You’re mine, Lilly-Rose. I won’t allow anyone else to see what I get to touch when we’re in bed.”
I nod. “Okay, I will. Maybe I should change now,” I say nervously.
He presses against me, letting me feel his erection. My heart’s beating so fast. I don’t know what’s happening. I clearly turn him on but at the same time, he acts as if I’ve done something wrong.
With one quick movement, he turns me around tearing apart my blouse and pulling it away from my body. He holds his hand high above me holding the torn piece of cloth and then lets the blouse fall on the kitchen counter leaving me in my bra and skirt. My legs are shaking and I can’t even tell if I’m breathing or not. I try pulling away but I hit the glass of wine with my elbow and it shatters on the floor. I freeze knowing this situation just got worse.

Rise of Alpha by Lorenz Font

Official genre of book: Young Adult/Urban Fantasy/Coming-of-age

All Brian Morrison wants is to be an ordinary teenager with normal teenage problems, but his uncontrollable twitching and phonic tics make that impossible. The butt of jokes in school, he is nothing but a laughing-stock until a visit to a local tarot shop turns his life upside-down.
The psychic’s strange prediction thrusts him into a mysterious world of ghastly creatures and bizarre events, and he must come to terms with the abrupt changes if he is going to survive. One mother’s plea for help presents him with an impossible challenge, but it also brings him closer to the most popular girl in school. Brian must overcome threats from all sides to honor his promise, and he is determined to succeed. His heart won’t let him turn his back on someone in need, especially when he’s fallen in love with her.
Protecting Shannon McKesson soon becomes the greatest purpose of his life. Brian discovers many things on this new journey, but the biggest one might be the truth about who he is. If only he and Shannon can stay alive long enough to unlock the mystery.

“Bro, you’re acting weird today—weirder than usual, anyway. I know you well enough to know something’s up, so spill the fava beans!” Mark made that Hannibal Lecter hissing sound from one of our favorite movies.
“Yeah, you ran out of that psychic shop like you’d seen a ghost.” Darryl seconded. “Then you got sick and wouldn’t answer our calls until this morning. Spill, dude.”
I wavered between the truth or a lie about what had happened over the past few days. Telling them would also mean I had to tell them about Shannon. For some selfish reason, I wanted to keep her all to myself. My own little secret.
“We’re your best friends, in case you’ve forgotten. We’ve shared dirty secrets since middle school,” Mark reminded me.
As long as I could remember, these two had been watching my back.
I still hesitated, but the overwhelming need to share my fears with them overcame the urge to keep Shannon to myself.
“Fine. It’s weird, and I expect you to keep this on the down-low, aʼight?”
They nodded.
“That night at Madame Elizabeth’s, she said something that scared the crap out of me. I know it was bogus, but it freaked me out bad.”
“What did she say?” they asked in unison.
I mimicked Shannon’s mom. “With your curse comes a blessing.”
“Really?” Mark narrowed his eyes. “That scared the shit out of you?”
“Yeah.” I was sure they’d start making fun of me, but when neither of them said anything, I continued. “She’s creepy, bro.”
Again, there was silence except for the crunching sound of their chewing, and the music of the forgotten video game’s menu screen.
After a moment, Darryl began picking at his ear piercings, a nervous habit of his. “Okay, fine. Madame Elizabeth confused the hell out of me with my reading. I got the man hanging upside down. She said that it symbolized self-sacrifice and adapting to changes. Like there’s going to be a pause in my life until I give up something for the greater good. So I asked what it really meant, because my creep-o-meter shot through the roof. She said that my friend would be going through a transition and I needed to be there for him.”
Mark and I looked at each other while Darryl resumed his assault on the chips.

Mark raised both hands and shook his head with a grin. “Don’t look at me. My voice doesn’t squeak. I’m circumcised, and all cylinders are a go.”
I socked Mark in the arm. “You’re stupid.”
“What did Madame E tell you?” Darryl asked him.
He was thoughtful for a moment. “Well, mine was kinda freaky, too. She had me pick a card, and I got temperance. She said it meant I had self-control and was able to handle tough situations, but that I had to deal with impatience and conflict. It could also mean angels and guardian spirits were around, but in my case, she said I was it.” He sighed and looked over at me. “Go figure what that means. Anyway, now you can tell us whatever it is you’re holding back.”
Cornered, I knew it was time to tell them about the dreams. I turned my desk chair around and straddled it. “That night, I started having weird dreams. First, this creature was chasing after Shannon McKesson. It was all a blur. I went back to sleep and dreamed something different. This random woman was being bitten by a rattlesnake. It was like I was there watching it happen. Then the next day, there she was in the news.”
I stopped to take a deep breath, and my friends stared at me like I’d lost my marbles. “See, I told you it’s weird. But that’s not all. I dreamed about Shannon and the weird creature again. It woke me up. I went back to sleep, I had another dream. This time, there was a girl running away from a man, and he was holding a bat. I could see everything around them, but I had no idea where they were. The next day, Shannon came over, and she and my mom were watching the—”
“Hold it right there! Shannon was here?” Disbelief was all over Mark’s face. Darryl stopped chewing, mirroring Mark’s surprise.
My secret was out. “Yeah, she came over when I didn’t show up for class yesterday.” I tried to make it sound like it wasn’t a big deal.

My Secret Submission By J. M. Witt

Release Date: May 4, 2016

Then, I met Gregor Thompson. Our worlds collided one fateful day and there was no turning back. He’s a mystery, intriguing, dominant, and has the same struggles at home that I do. He’s opened my mind to the possibility that my fantasies can indeed be met and that he’s the man to mentor me. He’s infiltrated my brain and seems to know my wants and needs before I express them.
It’s time to be who I was meant to be, get what I want, what I need, and forget what society thinks. I’m going to let Gregor take me on a journey of self-discovery to places most are unwilling to go. We all have a public life, a private life, and a secret life… He would be mine.
He was my safe place. He was my secret escape. He was my Sir.He was My Secret Submission.

I had revealed things to Gregor that Todd didn’t even know about me. Secret cravings, secret needs, and the secret betrayals of my past. Gregor held more of my secrets in the palm of his hand than I did. He had the potential to destroy everything I’d built, but I trusted him not to.
Things grew quiet and as I looked at him he complimented me once more. “Seriously, your eyes are stunning.”
I just shook my head. “Thank you.” I took a breath, gathering the courage to ask what I didn’t want to but needed to know. “So, I need to know if I’m ‘Thursday’ girl. I need to know if I’m just one of many you’re playing with. Safety, etc.”
“There hasn’t been anyone in a long time.”
Relieved, I simply said, “Ok.”
“So are your parents still together?”
I shook my head. “Well, technically, but my mom passed away several years ago. I don’t really know if they were ever really happy. Maybe they stayed together for us, my sister and me. I don’t know. My dad remarried a couple years after.”
He listened intently as I continued discussing their marriage from my perspective. Then he began doing the same in regards to his parents’ marriage.
“Mine stayed together, are still together, but I often wonder if my dad has someone else. My mother is a miserable woman and I hope my dad has someone, somewhere, that makes him happy.”
“Have you asked him?”
He just shook his head. “No.”
“Maybe you should.”
“I’m not sure I really want to know. Validation isn’t necessarily a good thing.”
“I get that. I know that my parents had affairs, or at least they both accused each other of it. For me it’s simple, if you’re not getting what you need, crave, and desire at home, you’re going to find it somewhere else.” He nodded his agreement. “I’m not saying its right, but it is what it is.”
“It’s almost impossible to find one person to meet all your needs, especially when most of us get married so young. We’re still discovering ourselves and odds are if you do find that person to meet all those carnal needs, as well as others, it happens later in life.”
Everything he said made sense. It wasn’t pretty or accepted by society, but it was the truth. When I got married I had no idea that the cravings and needs I now had would come to be. And I certainly didn’t know that Todd wouldn’t be open to exploring them.
“I wanted to tell you that you have my complete trust.” I looked to his face as his eyes narrowed on mine, like he wondered where I was going with this. “Given the circumstances, you could’ve ceased all contact with me once I revealed that we live in the same town. Had you been lying about anything detrimental, well, we wouldn’t be sitting here now.” He just stared at me as I nodded, “Thank you.”
He just shrugged and added, “I still can’t get over the odds of it all.”
Smiling, I agreed. “It’s a small, small world.”
We sat quiet for a moment before he asked, “So, what are you looking for?”
That was a loaded question and brought me back to the present. Sighing, I was honest with him. “I’m not looking to break up anyone’s marriage. I guess what I feel guilty about is that I don’t feel guilty.”
“I get that. It’s a process that took me a long time to grasp.”
“I have needs, desires, and right now he’s not willing to go there with me.”
“I want us to agree to a few things.” I nodded. “Don’t disappear on me. If things need to end, we do it like adults. I’ve had a couple just vanish on me and I have no idea what happened to them.”
“No, I agree and appreciate that. I’m a big girl. Just be honest.”
“Do you have a safe word?”
Smiling, “Yes.”
“What is it?”
“You’ll laugh.”
Shaking his head and smiling, he persisted, “I still need to know. What is it?”
“Unicorn.”
Laughing, “Ok. Unicorn it is.” He took a deep breath. “And no falling in love. If either of us starts falling, we need to walk away.”
“Agree. I’m not looking to fall in love.”
He quietly observed me for a moment and nodded his head. His hand stretched out across the back of the bench toward me. “So, what do you need from me today?”
Such a simple question and I became completely tongue-tied. “I, umm...”
I wasn’t trying to play coy, but I felt like an idiot. What did I need from him? I didn’t have a fucking clue. Where did we go next? He had yet to touch me, which I respected. The conversation flowed between us with ease, but was there physical chemistry? Would I recoil if he touched me? I didn’t know, I had no idea, and I sure as hell wasn’t about to make the first move.
As if he sensed my wariness, his hand reached out and grasped me just above my knee. Jesus, fuck! The heat of his hand seared me and I immediately had a puddle in my panties. If I was struggling with words before, they were impossible now.
He repeated his question, his stern voice catching my attention, “What do you need from me? We’re running out of time.”
