As everyone rallies around Julia while she fights like hell to live, she learns that family, along with love, comes in many shapes and sizes. It is her family that gives her the strength to fight the biggest battle of her life; one she doesn’t want to lose.

Deciding to take a quick dinner break, he started to dig into a burger at his favorite watering hole. Though tonight, with work piling up, all he could have was water. No beer for him. He noticed a very attractive girl at the bar but was caught up in a soccer game and missed his opportunity. Well, he wanted more of a conversation with the pretty girl than to ask her to pass a condiment. Wanting to kick himself, he instead turned to her at a commercial break and tried to correct his rudeness with an apology. The girl was quick to smile and accepted it as he made a small joke at the expense of his sodium intake.
She immediately said, “Oh, that’s ok. I know how men are with their games. My best friend, well minus the guy thing, is just like that. You play soccer, then?” Her dark eyes were inquisitive but sad. That was something Joe knew about.
“I used to, in high school and some in college.” He looked down at her beer, “Very few girls know how good dark beer is.”
“I know right, this is the only kind of beer I can drink. My dad started me out young I guess.” She smiled. “What about you? Aren’t you a beer drinker?”
He replied, “Normally, yes, but I just stopped by tonight for a quick bite to eat. I have some work I’ve got to get done. Beer just doesn’t mix with that.”
“Oh, I get that!” The girl said. Her meek smile was enticing, and Joe needed a way to insert himself into a conversation that would go somewhere with this beautiful young woman.
“So, you just come to Irish bars and drink dark beer by yourself?” He asked trying not to look her up and down, though she was worthy of being admired. He surmised she had to be at least twenty-one by the fact she’d been drinking but didn’t look much older. They were close in age to Joe being twenty-three.
The young woman responded, “No actually I’m taking a large class load this semester, and my best friend dragged me out tonight claiming that I need some sort of break.”
“You come here often? I’m here twice a week and have never seen you.” Joe asked.
“I’ve not been here in a long time. My dad is a good friend with the owner and we’d come here for dinner every Friday night. But I was at ECU for almost two years and just transferred to Wake last semester.”
He looked at her then smiled, “You are a Demon Deacon, I’m sorry.” He said with a wink.
“Well, what ACC team did you play for then, since your allegiance lies with somewhere else?” If he didn’t know any better, he would have thought her tone was almost borderline frisky and coy.
“I was at NC State. I played soccer but wasn’t able to graduate. My dad needed help running the family business, so I came home. But I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Joe didn’t elaborate why his dad needed him; not wanting to burden the cute girl with his problems. “Why did you transfer colleges?” He asked, changing the subject quickly from himself.“It’s a long story.” She quickly answered.
“Oh, I see.”
“What do you mean, you see?” She asked with a snicker.
“All long stories like that normally follow with some tragedy concerning a guy.” He could only smirk at his own words. This was fun, he was actually having fun.
She could only laugh, “Well, ok smarty pants! You think you’re so smart.”
“Where did your friend go? The friend you claim came with you?” He asked with an even more flirtatious tone in his voice. He’d been having a free-flowing conversation with this girl that he didn't want to end. Her eyes were infectious and he couldn't look away from them.
“That is a good question. She was going to call her boyfriend. Probably got wrapped up in a conversation.”
“So, you know my name is Joe, what about you?”
“Oh, I’m sorry, I’m Julia.” She said quickly.

Damn.
That was the first thought to pop into Gage’s head when he spotted Lizzie strutting toward his old Chevy truck in Winn Dixie’s parking lot.
Well, damn, and also, how does she make sweats look so good?
Her hair shone caramel under the sun, and it was with a small dose of satisfaction that he watched her stumble, slow, and then stutter to a halt at the sight of him up against his truck.
“You all good?” he asked, not bothering to hide the once over he gave her. V-neck T-shirt; tight leggings that hugged her body in all the right places; PJ’s coffee cup clutched tight in one hand; a pair of pristine, white tennis shoes. He met her gaze. “Not used to walking without the weapons?”
“Weapons?” Her husky voice slid through him like a shot of bourbon. “I’m in the market of advertising eye shadows and false lashes, Gage, not shotguns.”
“Your shoes, Princess.” He met her gaze, swallowing a grin when a flush worked up her neck. “I was talking about those fuck-me heels you’ve worn each time I’ve seen you.”
As he was beginning to expect from her, her chin went up in defiance. “The shoes weren’t for you.”
“I figured.”
“And I can walk perfectly fine in tennis shoes. I just . . . there was a rock.”
“Yeah?” He made a show of looking around her to where her near-fall had gone down. “What’s your classification between a rock and a pebble?”
Blue eyes narrowed. “I’d offer you a sip of my coffee to fix that grumpy attitude of yours, but since you’re inhuman and all . . .”
Gage pushed away from the truck. One step toward her. Two steps. Her chest inflated with a sharp inhale when he wrapped one hand around the Styrofoam cup. With a quick tug, he pulled it from her grasp and brought the rim to his mouth, drawing out the moment.
“You wouldn’t.”
At her deadpan tone, he replied, “I would,” and then took a purposeful swallow of death itself.
Jesus. Coffee. And it was black, too. Not a single touch of cream or sugar to mitigate the bitterness.
It took everything in him not to cough and thump his chest, and he made do with returning the cup to her still waiting hand.
As though enjoying his misery, Lizzie took a long sip of the coffee, never taking her eyes off his face. Then, “Feel a lot manlier after that display of cavemanitis?”
It was seven-thirty in the morning, and the fire was already in her step. He should have downed the rest of her drink. She definitely didn’t need any more of a perk-me-up. “I think I liked you better in the heels,” he muttered, turning back for the truck.
“Because they make my legs look longer?”
He grasped the passenger’s side door handle, and drew it open for her. When she went to climb in, Gage put his hand to her back. “No, Princess, because you’re a hell of a lot less snarky when you’re an extra five inches taller. Might be the difference in oxygen levels.”
Her mouth parted in a surprised O just before he slammed the door shut.

Excerpt
Enraged, KC bounced off the bed, faltered, then whirled about to face me. He broke for me, spitting threats and curses, his giant shadow of a body charging. I felt a twist of terror in the pit of my stomach.
I slipped the Luger from my purse easily—feeling the cool, sticky grip. There was no time to shout out a warning. He was coming—a charging, killing animal. I squeezed off two shots. The impact stunned him, jerked him erect. Froze him. I could see his eyes, wide in the bright flash of yellow neon. He heaved out a loud breath, like a snort.
“You shot me, you bitch! I’ll kill you! You fuckin’ shot me! I’ll kill you!”
He came at me, a big angry bear reaching. I fired two more shots. I watched in horror as he teetered, and stumbled backwards off-balance. He bounced off the wall, face blank, and dropped like a heavy sack. I felt the thud of his body shake the floor under my bare feet.
I stood breathing, sweating, heart kicking. I knew he was dead. I didn’t need to check. I mean, I shot him four times, for Chrissake! Did anyone hear the shots? I strained my ears. Dead quiet. Were there people next door? Would someone call the police?
Strangely, I felt calm—incredibly calm. Where was the shock? Methodically, I slipped the handgun back into my purse. Then I realized I was naked. I found my clothes, slipped them on, turned the room lights on dim and searched the room, refusing to look at KC, making sure I hadn’t left anything: still had my earrings, watch, phone, purse. Would there be finger prints? Maybe. I knew, from some of Kyle’s police buddies, that prints were hard to find. I hadn’t touched many things. I hadn’t even drunk from a glass or used a towel. What about hair in the bed? A broken nail? No time to search. Impossible anyway.
I turned off the lights and slipped out of the motel into a dark humid night. The motel office was 70 feet or so away and, fortunately, I hadn’t stepped inside the office with KC when he registered. I had not been seen. I listened for police sirens. Nothing. Strange.
We had come on KC’s motorcycle, leaving my car in the bar’s parking lot. I’d have to walk the five miles or so, and I did, keeping my head low, edging along in the shadows.
When I arrived back at the bar, the parking lot was still bloated with motorcycles, trucks and old dinged up cars. I glanced about, saw a couple locked in a kiss near the front door, climbed into my car, cranked the engine and drove away, still feeling oddly calm. Why? I had just killed a man.
The police would soon be looking for the killer, of course. The bartender had seen me, and the man who had moved to give me his barstool, had seen me. Would they remember what I looked like? As far as I knew, they were the only ones. No one knew my name or anything else about me. Still, there was no doubt the police would find some evidence. If there was hair in the bed, they’d run a DNA test. This was Florida after all, and Florida cops weren’t stupid, at least not the ones Kyle and I had known.
So, what now? I drove, and drove, and kept on driving. I lost track of time and place, my mind soon entranced by the blurring white lines of the road, by the hum of the car engine and the expanding, chilling realization that I’d just killed a man.
About the Author: I'm a Florida-based writer, who loves all things romantic, with a shot of suspense. I also love to write Time Travel Novels. When the characters keep me up nights, I feel good about the story.
