I'm Back!
After taking a several week hiatus (for many good reasons) I'm back. In the very near future I'll be posting some awesome reviews from books sent to me from publishers and the thing I'm excited about most is I had the opportunity to interview Australian author Charlotte McConaghy and discuss her new series, Fury: Book 1 of The Cure.
I can't wait to share her thoughts and advice. Also, I'll be posting some amazing exclusive excerpts from Fury and my last review of Fury, for episode 3. Trust me, Fury is an amazing book and I cannot wait to read more. For a teaser, Charlotte did tell me that she is currently writing the second Fury novel, but I couldn't get her to spill the publication date :)
Blog hops will resume as well. I will only add that even in the life of an author, reviewer, blogger, etc. look beyond the glitter and understand that sometimes life happens, and we too, have to prioritize.
Before publication of my series came to fruition, I had this vision that to be an author must mean they lived in the Alps wearing bunny sweaters, drinking hot chocolate while typing up their next NYT Bestseller on a vintage typewriter. That idea perhaps exist for some authors, but I assure you, that's not even remotely close to my life as an author.
In real life I'm the Director of Nursing for a rather large agency that provides supports and services to individuals with some form of disruption in mental health. I'm on call every other week where the possibility of getting called into work at all hours of the night is a probable outcome. In addition to those responsibilities, I have a husband and two little daughters.
For fun, I review for BTS magazine, NetGalley, and various publishers. I occasionally try squeezing a novel or two of my own in there. It can be fun using social media, etc. but the moral here is that life happens to the best of us and when it does, some situations dictate that we put "fun" aside for "grown-up-no-fun-at-all-land".
Here's to hoping another hiatus doesn't occur for a very long time!

Review of Fury: Episode 2 Book 1 of The Cure by Charlotte McConaghy

Book Description:
Scared of her growing feelings for Luke, Josi strikes out on her own, determined never to get close to another living soul. A desperate fear is kindling inside her—a fear of the intimacy Luke craves, and a fear of her own terrible past and the trail of murders she has left in her wake.
Despite the danger, Luke is drawn to Josi, and is determined to discover the truth about her fury despite the risks. Luke knows that Josi will be hunted by the Bloods—the secret police who slaughter anyone who hasn't been cured.
Is Josi's fury enough to keep her alive? And will the deadly secret Luke is keeping from her be discovered? It is a secret he has fought to protect—lied to protect. A secret that could destroy them both if discovered ...
My Review: 5 HUGE STARS! Fury is what beautifully crafted books are made of!
"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."
Late at night after finishing Episode 2, I sat up and thought of this one line, these words woven together so beautifully, and they meant something to me. This sentence struck a cord deep in my heart. This one sentence can be applied to so many things in life and going forward I will remember it.
Fury: Episode 2 (Book One of The Cure) by Charlotte McConaghy, is simply breathtaking.
In Episode 2 we find out more about Josi, Luke, and Anthony. The plot and pace of the story is pieced together flawlessly.
Finding out who Luke truly is only added to the intensity of the story. I do not want to write any spoilers as Fury is a novel worth reading and experiencing on your own. It was emotional and greatly added to my love and appreciation for how the author placed Luke in a situation where he would have to either go down the path of duty and obligation, or walk down the lonely road of following your heart and fighting a corrupted system. Luke is so very dear in my eyes...
As I read from Anthony's POV, it was a joy to watch him grow, to see him begin to grasp what was transpiring all around him, that while he has been "cured" he can still grasp logic and strive for the man he might have been prior to receiving the cure.
And Josi...to read from her POV was like being there with her, traveling with her on this perilous journey to prevent the loss of more lives than she has already taken when transitioning under the blood moon. There was genuine anguish at the thought of her being unable to control herself. Josi has known no kindness in her life until Luke finds her, and given Josi's back story (history of abusiveness, no parental love, etc.) Luke's love for Josi is simply beautiful, written in such a way that makes the reader want to have some faith in humanity, that not all is lost.
Episode 2 was every bit as powerful and thought provoking as Episode 1. I am now and forever a fan of Ms. McConaghy. I cannot recommend Fury enough. Reading Fury was much like reading perfection on a page.
My review of Episode 3 will be posted soon. Also, in the very near future, I have been given the opportunity to interview Ms. McConaghy and am super excited to share. Coming soon...

Review of Fury: Episode 1 (Book One of The Cure) by Charlotte McConaghy

By: Charlotte McConaghy
Genre: Dystopian
Publisher: Momentum
Length: 103 pages
Format: ebook
Book Description:
In the tradition of Divergent comes a novel about a world where negative emotions are stolen ... and only those with fury can stand up and fight.
Eighteen-year-old Josephine Luquet wakes naked and covered in blood that is not hers on the same day every year—when the blood moon is full. Josi has not responded to the "Cure"—an immunization against anger mandated by the government—and believes herself to be a threat to others.
Then she meets Luke. Luke has had the Cure but seems different to the other "drones"—and he's dead set on helping Josi discover the truth about herself before the next blood moon.
But time is running out. Is Luke willing to risk his life to be near her? Does he truly understand what violence she is capable of?
Raw and full of passion, Fury is a story of love in a dystopian world, and how much we are willing to forgive in the struggle to remember our humanity.
About the author:

My Review: 5 HUGE STARS!
I LOVED this one! Fury was amazing. The writing was eloquent, breathtaking, and simply beautiful. Fury: Episode One of The Cure, alternates between three viewpoints: Josephine (Josi), Luke (love interest), and Anthony (psychiatrist).
Josi is our main character. She is uncured, raw, and untouched by this dystopian societies answer for anger: The Cure. In Fury, (set well into the future) at the age of fifteen, all citizens are given an injection known as the cure. Josi calls them drones, beings unable to feel passion, anger, all those bad emotions that balance out the good ones.
When she meets Luke, for the first time, she finds someone who received the cure, but it didn't take away all of his feelings, his humanity, and emotions. They begin a friendship of sorts and Luke tries to help Josi discover her violent past, a past where she murders people but has no memory of doing so. This alter-ego Josi only comes out during the Blood Moon.
Fury is also told during different times in Josi's life. Presently Josi is in an asylum, and her story about Luke is told through her memories of him, and this is told to her psychiatrist, Anthony, for all appearances seems to be a drone as well, but in counseling Josi, it is as though she evokes emotion from him-something that doesn't occur in someone who has received the Cure. I cannot wait to find out more about Anthony, his character is interesting.
Episode 1 is a novella, but in it's pages the depth woven into each character was astounding and mesmerizing.
It concludes with the reader ascertaining that Luke is not all he appears to be. He is harboring a secret, and I bought Episode 2 last night as I fully intend to find out what he's up to.
What an incredible read! I would highly recommend Fury by Charlotte McConaghy to lovers of dystopian, science fiction, romance...it has such a wonderful crossover appeal into many genres. If you're in the mood for a wonderful read with stunning writing, Fury is the one for you!

Please stay tuned for teasers/excerpts and reviews of the next 2 episodes of Fury! This book was incredible! I'm excited to have the opportunity to interview Ms. McConaghy and will be posting that in the very near future.
Do yourself a favor and snatch these 3 episodes of Fury up! This was by far one of the most stunning novels in any genre that I've ever read. It will certainly go in my pile of re-read-every-year-because-it's-that-good!

My review: 5 HUGE STARS! Shadow Fire ROCKS!
Oh, I truly loved this one! Shadow Fire, by Kimber Leigh Wheaton, is a snappy, sassy, sweet, all-that-kind-of-awesome-and-then-some YA read. I couldn't put it down.
Okay, so let's start with the cover: How gorgeous is it? It's beautiful, eye-catching, pretty in the way you want to pet it (or the black wolf, at least). Kudos to the cover artist/s. They did a knock out job creating a cover that after reading Shadow Fire, captured the essence of it.
Onto the novel itself. Where do I begin? The author did an incredible job creating a fresh story in a genre that's been there and done that. The writing style was creative, well done, and descriptively just right.
Shadow Fire was a fast paced read full of adventure, suspense, twists, turns, and romantic tension. The main character, Ashlyn, is the Chosen One, not a role I would be signing up for any time soon, but when I think of mercenary swoon-worthy Zane, on second thought, I just might!
Ashlyn has her work cut out for her, a job that's sure to fail (no pressure there) and it's a race against time to save her people and her heart.
The quest Ashlyn and Zane are on together is a wonderful journey for the reader as well. I highly recommend Shadow Fire to those in search of something fun, suspenseful, with the right ratio of romance. The only disappointment was when Shadow Fire ended. While I enjoyed the ending, I simply wanted more, I didn't want the adventure to end!
Shadow Fire is a wonderful edition to the YA genre! Grab it up as Shadow Fire is sure not to disappoint.

Excerpt #1
Every step I take is one step closer to death.
Hiking through the dense underbrush, I try to calm my frayed nerves and control the fear threatening to overwhelm me. Twigs and tendrils of ivy grab at my ankles as I continue to forge ahead, forcing me to wrench away from their skeletal grip. The sunlight is fading, signaling the end of another day, but this is no ordinary day.
A loud crack pierces the air. I freeze in my tracks, my breath catching in my throat. Whipping my head around, I try to locate the source of the sound. My heart pounds in my chest, the erratic rhythm painful. These woods are full of predators, some animal, some monster, but the worst… human. Taking a deep breath, I listen to the surrounding woods: birds chirp, insects hum, and small animals scurry about as if they have no care in the world.
Lungs burning, I force myself to continue walking. I didn't collapse three weeks ago when this whole fiasco started, and I won't give in now. My family needs me to be strong.
The trees become sparser as I approach the edge of the forest. My shoulders slump when I pass the tree house we used to play in so many years ago. Any other day when I'm this close to home after a long day of hunting, I'd smile, breathe a sigh of relief, and perhaps look forward to dinner. Today there will be no raucous family meal, no solace in entering the peaceful village, and nothing to smile about.
The villagers will be awaiting my return, skulking in the shadows, desperate to catch a glimpse of the walking dead girl.
I've dealt with the whispers and pointing for three weeks with my head held high, my anxiety hidden behind a mask of indifference. I don't want them to see me like this, trembling in fear, broken. They've taken everything I am, every hope, every dream I've had for the future and smashed them to pieces with little hope of salvation. The townsfolk of Verdane decided my fate and they chose death.
The elders told me being Chosen is an honor. Either they are ignorant or apathetic. Every five years for the last twenty, a teenage girl has been chosen by the town, via secret ballot, to undertake this dangerous quest, never to return. Perhaps if the elders had to forfeit their lives instead they wouldn't be so quick to label it an honor, they'd call it what it is… a sacrifice.
Excerpt #2
When we reach the deck, everyone stops to stare at me. Trying to ignore the blatant curiosity, I follow Hanna down the aft stairs to the brig. Zane and Taranis occupy cells across from each other. They're both sitting on the floor glaring daggers at each other. Hanna hands the key to me and slips away. Inching closer, I'm careful to remain out of reach of the two prisoners. As soon as they see me, both men jump up and start talking over each other.
"Ashlyn! How are you feeling, Love?" Zane asks.
"Ashlyn, my fiery angel, you are a ray of sunshine in this dank prison!" Taranis says.
"I'm gonna let you both out, if, and only if, you promise to behave," I threaten. Both men nod their agreement. "That means no fighting. It also means we never, and I mean never, speak of what happened last night." When I get no argument, I free Zane first and then Taranis.
"Do you even know what happened last night?" Zane asks, taking me into his arms. I stand rigid in his embrace, not sure if I'm ready to forgive him quite yet.
"Only what Hanna told me," I snap at him.
"I saved your virtue from this raving lunatic," Taranis says, pointing at Zane.
"Then you decided to take it for yourself!" Zane yells back at him.
"Did you not hear me?" I shout. Pulling myself from Zane's embrace, I back up and glare at both men. "No speaking of last night. Period. End of discussion."
"Yes, Love," Zane replies.
"Yes, virtuous virgin," Taranis replies.
"Taranis!" I release a menacing growl, and wince when my right eye starts to tic. "Yes?" he asks, eyes full of mock innocence.
"Run," Zane says.
Taranis listens to Zane's advice and takes off up the stairs to the deck with me hot on his heels.

Review of Blood Orange Soda by James Michael Larranaga
I received Blood Orange Soda from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I LOVED everything about this book. I thought the cover was cool, but the real prize was within. Blood Orange Soda was unlike anything I've ever read.
It's due out on March 15, 2014.
My Review: Blood Orange Soda was the most delicious novel I've read in quite some time. I absolutely loved this book. The world building was fleshed out in amazing detail. I enjoyed the author's imagination and take on groups: Normals, Vampires, Goth Vamps, Emo's...you name it, Mr. Larranaga dreamt it.
A truly original spin on Vampires. I loved the slang in the book which only made Blood Orange Soda that much more believable from the perspective of a teenage boy.
Our main character Darius, is in this novel, a typical Goth Vamp, conflicted about transitioning into an actual Vampire. Society offers "Reds", a pharmaceutical option that Vampires and pre-Vamps may take in order to remain human, or prevent the change.
Situations crop up throughout the novel that justifies Darius' decision to not only go off the medication, but to digest Blood Orange Soda to speed up the progression into transforming into a Vampire.
I admired the way the author wrote the relationships throughout the novel. Weezer, Angel, Jack, Virginia...And my heart absolutely clenched up tight at how under the guyliner, metal, and cool image, Darius wasn't afraid to cry in front of his mother and for his mother. Those parts of the novel were very emotional and beautifully written.
I loved the musical references, especially the John Lennon's "Beautiful Boy." It was profound and meaningful. And to me, Darius is a beautiful boy and Blood Orange Soda is a beautiful novel. This one is Two True! A winner! Add Blood Orange Soda on Goodreads here: BOS Check back here for reviews and recommendations of novels I've read from NetGalley or ARC's I've received for review.

New Release! Of Fire and Roses by Danielle Belwater

Nate moves from the big city to a small, forest town with his father after his mother’s tragic death. Alone and angry, Nate feels even more isolated by his father’s inability to communicate and relate to his only son in the wake of their loss.
Nate takes to the forest in an attempt to find some peace, but instead finds a beautiful girl with flaming red hair. But before he can speak with her, she vanishes. Unsure if the girl is a vision or real he searches desperately for her.
When Nate finally meets Cora, his world is turned upside down and inside out.
Dreams of his own death plague his sleep as old dark magic, hidden for centuries, resurfaces and has its sights clearly set on Nate.
Excerpt:
I felt her before I saw her. Warmth and comfort spread through me like hot soup on a cold day. I spun around and tried to focus through the hazy grey mist. But I could see her, hiding behind a large oak. There was no mistaking that flaming red hair. I had to resist the urge to run both my hands through the rich silk tresses, to feel its softness, to see if locks the colour of fire would burn me.
I didn’t want to startle her, so I motioned with my fingers that I was coming over. I calmly and deliberately walked over, terrified she might run off, even though my own heart felt like it was going to make a break for it. Her head darted back and forth like a frightened rabbit, uncertain of where to go. As I approached, I could see her eyes flicker with apprehension but she remained still.
When I got about ten feet away, I stopped. Her eyes connected with mine and I lurched backward. Her eyes were two azure blue pools so deep you could dive in and never reach the bottom. Those eyes appraised me inquisitively. I couldn’t move. I was stuck fast like the forest tree she hid behind. I had the unsettling feeling I was about to be dashed against rocks like sailors drawn to a siren’s song, and there was nothing I could do about it. Author Bio: Danielle Belwater adores the concept of true love and truly believes everyone has their Prince Charming or Snow White out there somewhere, even if they have to fight demons, ghosts, and wizards to find it.
Danielle has been having a love affair with words since she was young and in primary school, writing some rather imaginative tales. This love has followed her into adulthood.
She lives in rural South Australia with her husband, young daughters and way too many animals to mention. She spends most of her time dreaming up characters, stories, ghostly tales, and watching Firefly re-runs. She also cooks the odd meal for her family to avoid them looking like skeletons at official author functions!
Danielle is passionate about reading and her interests include pretty much anything with words from rolling four volume epics to the daily newspaper.

My Beautiful Shiny New Cover: Black Abaddon
Oh. My. Goodness. I received my new cover for book 2, Black Abaddon, earlier this week. I pretty much did the same thing as last time: "TIM! Get in here right now! I just got my new cover!" And then insert a bunch of screaming, jumping up and down in my kitchen, pretty much looking like I just lost my ever-lovin' mind. Here she is:
And here's my tour dates (stops will be posted soon):
Don't forget about book 1, Black Amaranth, in the Vulcan Legacies series. During my tour stops, I'll be giving away some great prizes including gift cards to Evernight Teen and who knows what else?
Also, Black Amaranth (book 1) will still be in the spotlight. I've wanted to keep this under wraps until all things are official, but Black Amaranth is still up for review at some pretty cool places and will be featured in the near future for some book blitzes and on other cool sites. I'm excited to get this series into the hands of readers!
Black Abaddon is much darker than Black Amaranth and in future interviews I cannot wait to talk about my new book and explain why I had to take the Vulcan Legacies series to a new level.
Stay tuned!
