Excerpt
I complete another tour around the baggage carousel and recheck the
time. Hobart International Airport needs to review its name. The last overseas
flights were canceled years ago.
The wall clock taunts me. Surely more than three minutes have elapsed
since the last time I checked. The distant engine drone cuts through the
terminal chatter, growing steadily louder. My scalp prickles. God, I despise
air travel. Only a few more minutes and she’ll be safe on the ground, here in
Tasmania, crossing the tarmac. Breath bottles in my chest. I rub my palms on my
jeans and pull down my hat.
Talia.
A thousand images strike my brain like sudden lightning. Her sexy
lips quirking when she’s privately amused or ragging on me. Those bright eyes
and wild hand gesticulations. The way my whole body simultaneously revs and
calms from her touch.
Muscles fire down my body’s length, concentrating a heated flare in
one particular region.
Down, boy.
Fucking hell, I’m nervous.
A typical bogan, red-faced and outfitted in a faded rugby shirt,
jostles against me beside the arrival door. He fails to subdue the supersize
rose bouquet exploding out of his beefy arms. “How ya goin’, mate?” he asks
with a proud shrug, proceeding to mistake my aggravation for polite interest.
“Got to treat the missus right, ’ey?”
I avoid humoring this blokey conversation by giving a curt nod.
Shit.
Talia isn’t expecting flowers, is she?
The thought never occurred to me. I yank a retractable pen from my
back pocket and click the button.
Tick, tick, tick.
The bogan peers through the lifeless blooms; his thick lips frown
in my direction.
Tick, tick, tick.
Never understood the big attraction in giving a girl dead blossoms
as a symbol of affection.
Tick, tick, tick.
The bogan grumbles under his breath and moves away.
I can’t help irritating dudes like him. It’s a gift.
Outside the terminal, a thunderous engine roar signals touchdown.
The din dials to a high whining hum as the plane taxis. It’s been two months
since I flew halfway around the world and begged Talia for a second chance.
Despite everything, a miracle happened. She took my dumb ass back. I wondered
if she’d wise up, reconsider. Moving to Australia is a big deal. Takes effort,
commitment. Would have been easy to back out.
Will she ever know—truly grasp—that I died a little every day
waiting for her?
The first passengers trickle in, becoming a flood. I dismiss the
unknown faces.
You don’t matter.
Don’t care about you either.
Or you, love. Shuffle along.
The crowd shifts.
There.
Familiar copper eyes lock with mine and doubt evaporates. In three
steps—four if you count me sidestepping the human rosebush—Talia is in my arms.
“Hey, you,” she whispers.
I spin her around and the whole world blurs like a piece of
abstract art, our lips the only concrete entities. She tastes exactly the
same—warm, salty, with a hint of mint. This is a kiss of victory. Talia and I,
we pulled off an impossible stunt.

About Lia

Lia Riley writes offbeat New Adult Romance. After studying at the University of Montana-Missoula, she scoured the world armed only with a backpack, overconfidence and a terrible sense of direction. She counts shooting vodka with a Ukranian mechanic in Antarctica, sipping yerba mate with gauchos in Chile and swilling XXXX with stationhands in Outback Australia among her accomplishments. When not torturing heroes (because c’mon, who doesn’t love a good tortured hero?), Lia herds unruly chickens, camps, beach combs, daydreams about as-of-yet unwritten books, wades through a mile-high TBR pile and schemes yet another trip. She and her family live in Northern California.

Spotlight On: Love and Other Unknown Variables, by Shannon Lee Alexander

Love and Other Unknown Variables
by Shannon Alexander
Release Date: 10/07/14
Entangled Teen
Summary from Goodreads:
Charlie Hanson has a clear vision of his future. A senior at Brighton School of Mathematics and Science, he knows he’ll graduate, go to MIT, and inevitably discover solutions to the universe’s greatest unanswered questions. He’s that smart. But Charlie’s future blurs the moment he reaches out to touch the tattoo on a beautiful girl’s neck.
The future has never seemed very kind to Charlotte Finch, so she’s counting on the present. She’s not impressed by the strange boy at the donut shop—until she learns he’s a student at Brighton where her sister has just taken a job as the English teacher. With her encouragement, Charlie orchestrates the most effective prank campaign in Brighton history. But, in doing so, he puts his own future in jeopardy.
By the time he learns she’s ill—and that the pranks were a way to distract Ms. Finch from Charlotte’s illness—Charlotte’s gravitational pull is too great to overcome. Soon he must choose between the familiar formulas he’s always relied on or the girl he’s falling for (at far more than 32 feet per second squared).

Books
In doing research for Love and Other Unknown Variables, I came across an interesting study that showed how our brains respond similarly to certain “beautiful” math problems just as they would a piece of music or art. It was one more piece of evidence proving math and art are more interrelated than I’d ever thought they could be.
This realization led me to write this scene for Charlie and Charlotte so they could begin to see not just how they differ, but the similarities they share. In this short excerpt, Charlotte has shown Charlie her book of sketches in an attempt to be more open with him.
Charlotte takes a deep breath that hitches as it travels up her spine like it’s catching on snags along the way. “I’m not used to sharing. It’s always been easiest to keep things close.”
I want to know what things she’s keeping so close. I want her to unpack them from inside herself, perhaps making room for…what? For me? This is ludicrous. I should hand her back her sketches and walk away.
I push my own notebook toward her instead. “It’s only fair.”
She chuckles and glances down at the open page. “What’s this?” Her voice is soft beside me. She’s pointing at the problem I was working on moments ago. In it, I’ve had to use the symbol for infinity, but I drew her tattoo instead. I didn’t even realize I’d done it.
“Trying to figure me out, Mr. Hanson? Think you’ll get extra credit?”
“I—” I’ve got nothing to say. I stare at the symbol I’ve drawn with the word hope bound up in its endlessness. There are many ideas in mathematics that we know are true, even if we’ll never be able to solve them. Too many. They’re the paradoxes that make math so beautiful.
Charlotte feels like that. Like a problem I’ll never really figure out, but that I know is just right for me.
She leans her shoulder into mine. “You and me, Charlie, we’re on the same team—both artists. We just work with different mediums.”
Charlie’s brain definitely lights up when he sees a beautiful math problem. Do you have a favorite math equation or scientific theory? How about a piece of music or art that moves you?

Excerpt
It hit me, hard, that no matter how I twisted it around in my head, Reese was going to be more than just an informant to me. I didn’t know if I could trust him, this cowboy-vampire I had been thrown together with. But something about him sang to me, like a tune just out of hearing, almost recognized—a song of protection and death. And I wanted to dance to it, almost as much as I wanted to escape it.
The department wouldn’t force me to stick it out, wouldn’t expect me to team up with a vampire for anything more than the most superficial of connections.
I could walk out at any time.
But I wouldn’t. He’d help us find and stop whoever was killing these women.
That’s why I’ll stay in this.
“I’ll tell you everything,” I said to the vampire snarling at me. “But I’ll need your help.”
Reese’s lip dropped back down, covering the fang.
I was glad—it was easier to contemplate joining forces with him when he wasn’t reminding me that he was one of the monsters.
“Talk,” he said.
I shook my head. “Not here,” I said, speaking quietly. How good his hearing might be was only one of the many things I didn’t know about vampires.
He slid up to the bar beside me.
“We can’t leave,” he said, equally softly. I had to lean close to hear him.
“Why not?” I asked.
“Mendoza all but dared me to Claim you, back there.” He didn’t look down at me. “If I don’t bleed you at least a little before we go, he’ll be suspicious.”
At his words, the half-healed bite mark Reese had left on my shoulder throbbed once, sending a hot pulse throughout my entire body.
I wanted the response to be revulsion.
Almost everyone who went undercover with the vamps came out addicted to their bite. The ones who could still string two sentences together, like Garrett, stayed on the force.
The others . . .
The press portrayed us as bumbling and stupid—and maybe we were. Sending detectives in against humanity’s worst nightmare? We were like little kids trying to hold back the dark with matches, bound to get our fingers burned, and worse, maybe burn the house down around us.
I paused and swallowed.

Naming Characters: Guest Post by Adrian J. Smith, Author of Ashes Fall

Guest Post by Adrian J Smith
There’s a lot that goes into a name. I’m quite open about talking about names of characters and to picking them randomly as I go along for side characters,
but I never pick a main character’s name randomly. That’s particularly important in this series. James Matthews is a woman—and that’s not a common first name for
a woman. There’s even a joke about it in the first book.
James is a name that has always had a special place for me. If I was a boy, it would have been my middle name, and thus the middle initial in my author name
became a “J” and I’ve always hoped that no one would ever ask me what it meant. In the two years I’ve been writing under this pen name no one has, so I’m
counting my lucky stars!
James Matthews was supposed to have a more exotic name for a woman. She’s a bit exotic in looks and definitely does not fall into the norm. She’s a female
firefighter who happens to be a lesbian, oh, and did I mention she has a special gift? She’s not your norm, and her name becomes that.
Addison, on the other hand, is a bit more normal. I have a special affinity for any name that begins with an “A” and thus my author name and her name must begin
with a name. I also wanted a name that was gender-neutral to add a slight confusion in the beginning of book one, and a nickname for James to call her on
the side.
Lily goes back to one of my best friends in high school, someone who inspired me to be creative and to go where I never thought I could go. I needed a name,
and Lily’s legal name, as you find out rather quickly in Ashes Fall, is Alyssa. My good friend Lily in high school probably doesn’t even know I’ve named this
character after her, but I think it suits her, and she would be most excited with the turn Lily takes (although, I will say, her name is based on my friend,
the personality is the complete opposite of my friend).
Names are just as important as anything else that goes into a book. They have to fit the character, fit the personality, and they have to fit the author. A
lot of people ask whether or not they should have a pen name, and honestly, they’re the only ones who can answer that question. My reasoning was simple—keep
day job and night job separate, create a buffer for the two, and hopefully get away with writing lesbian fiction with my day job never finding out.
I gave myself a new identity. But what I’ve come to realize is I’m more myself under this pen name than I can be under my real name. It’s not something
I quite expected, but I do sincerely enjoy it.
About The Author
Adrian J. Smith, or “AJ” as she is often called, has a generous and soft heart. She loves to rescue stray cats and dogs, as well as those who just
escape. Her hoard of animals currently includes two cats, a dog and a fish, but no children as of yet. She’s passionate about LGBT et al rights, women’s rights
and children’s rights.
AJ loves to read and write lesbian fiction, simply for the fact that strong women make her swoon and when two are involved her knees turn to jelly and she
falls head over heels in love. AJ travels around the United States, and sometimes the world, gathering up stories for her novels. Currently, she lives
in the middle of nowhere of the middle of nowhere and is rather difficult to find except on the internet, where she spends a lot of her time.
At least 10% of all AJ’s proceeds from book royalties go to Sanctuary For Kids. It’s a fantastic organization that sends money to help children around the
world. Charity and children are an extremely important part of my life and supporting them in any way possible is magnificent.
About The Book
Eleven years after the love of her life dies, James hopes everything would be normal and works to construct her reality as such. Her adopted daughter, Lily,
finishes her sophomore year of high school with nothing other than good grades, a best friend for life, and goals for the future. James, after stepping back
into the dating world, has a girlfriend with a steady, non-life-threatening job. Life is as peaceful as it can be. But a day at the waterpark with her daughter
reveals the largest crack in the façade.
And nothing can stop chaos from ensuing.

My Top Five Favorite Vampire Hunters in Novels
by Margo Bond Collins
In Sanguinary, Elle Dupree is catapulted into becoming a vampire hunter when her fiancé is turned. Hunting vampires was never in her plans—she wanted to be a college history professor. But when it becomes necessary, she takes up a stake and starts slaying.
Cami has become one of my favorite vampire hunters, but I have been a fan of these kinds of characters for a long time; I love watching them as they develop their abilities as hunters! In no particular order, here are my top five favorite vampire slayers to be found in books:
Abraham Van Helsing: This list wouldn’t be possible, I think, without Dracula’s Dutch doctor. Even the ridiculous accent can’t detract from his status as vampire hunter extraordinaire.
Anita Blake: I tend to prefer the earlier books of Laurell K. Hamilton’s series, but even the later ones have some interesting vampire-hunter moments. Anita Blake is tough and strong, and as the urban-fantasy progenitor of kick-ass, vampire-hunting women, she is an important addition to this list.
Jane Yellowrock: Faith Hunter’s series about the shapeshifting, Harley-riding, leather-wearing vampire hunter/bodyguard has become one of my favorite urban fantasy reads. Jane rocks!
Rae Seddon: The narrator of Robin McKinley’s novel Sunshine remains one of my favorites. I’ve even taught the book in a gothic literature class. Rae (also known as Sunshine) wants desperately to be a normal person, but being kidnapped by vampires forces her to tap into her powerful heritage.
Magiere: Dhampir by Barb and J.C. Hendee draws nicely on the mythology of the half-vampire, and the high-fantasy setting of the book (along with Magiere’s half-elf partner) make this a fun genre mash-up with a great protagonist!

Spotlight On: Alien Manifesto, by T.W. Embry
Blurb
When orphaned ex-Navy S.E.A.L. Thomas Scott decides upon a life of crime, he does not expect to be recruited to join an elite Special Forces operation charged with stealing an alien artifact. Especially a mixed-species alien team headed by inter-galactic billionaire Snarth. The close-knit team soon becomes Tom’s family in more senses than one, which complicates matters when the mysterious artifact turns out to hold secrets that may plunge the whole of the known universe into a devastating war…
Alien Manifesto: The Adventures of the Human Thomas Scott
In the future, Earth is controlled by one man, Supreme Leader Jeremiah Johnson. Fueled by a desire to control the world, Jeremiah Johnson infiltrated himself into the mega-churches and led a campaign of suppression and subversion that resulted in one Church of Enlightenment, with himself as leader. The political influence of the Church extended into the political arena where Jeremiah Johnson was also elected Supreme Leader of the World. With both the power of the church and the government in his hands, nothing stands between Jeremiah and world domination.
Henry Thomas’ parents were on a mission to uncover evidence that would undermine the doctrine that is the foundation of the Church of Enlightenment. Ten year old Henry watched as his parents were deemed heretics and violently murdered by a death squad of Church fanatics. Captured by fanatics himself, Henry is sent to a Church orphanage to be reprogrammed. After six years of captivity he manages to escape and begin a life on the run. He meets the love of his life, Annie Pearl, who shares his hatred of the oppression that has created a world of extreme wealth and extreme poverty. When Annie is murdered for her outspoken views, Henry’s life is set on a course of revenge and hatred. His mission to destroy Supreme Leader Johnson will take him all the way to the Martian deserts surrounding the new Mars colony. On Mars he hopes to find the proof his parents were seeking, the evidence that will topple an empire and exact revenge for the murder of those he loved.
