Today, I have Angela C. Blackmoore on the on the blog to feature her book, HOT TEA AND COLD MURDER.
I asked Angela, “What inspired you to write this book?”
She replied…
I was inspired to write a cozy mystery in the state that I live. Oregon! I wanted to showcase the beauty of my state and spin a tale of mystery at the same time. I think I’ve succeeded!
Many authors seem to be inspired to write about their home towns or states!
Struggling from the loss of her husband, Abby Morgan finds herself trying to find a new life in a small Oregon town called Red Pine Falls. It has everything she’ll need to recover. A new best friend, a handsome park ranger, and a loving grandmother.
If only her friend, Becky, weren’t accused of murdering a local land developer, it might just be perfect.

Sunday Update – July 22, 2018

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share News. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.
My fingers hurt today from all the writing/typing I’ve done so I’m going to try and keep this short.
This was an interesting week. It all started off just fine. We did our normal stuff, camp and pool for the kids, walking and working for me. Wednesday, I had to attend my youngest daughter’s camp to see their little play they put together and find out what else she had been doing there this summer. She told me her stomach hurt that day but I thought she was just nervous for her play since she had a leading role. But that night it was still hurting, and she went to bed for a short while before puking.
Then Thursday she spent most of the morning puking and got steadily better throughout the day. Turned out to be a very short stomach bug. She was back to camp the next day with no issues but lack of appetite.
We tried to go to the pool as much as possible this week because there’s a lot of rain in the forecast for the coming week. We weren’t able to go this weekend due to thunderstorms either. Hopefully we go tomorrow.
In other family news, we finally held the birthday party for the youngest and her friends. We did a painting party and the girls had a lot of fun. They all painted sea turtles! I loved them all.
In writing news, I’ve finally finished the first, second, and third act of my WIP, and I only have 15,000 words to go in the final fourth act. I’m really enjoying this story, and I hope my readers like this new series too. We shall see what y’all think of it.
What else happened this week…
My daughter showed off what she’s been learning at summer music camp this summer.
Lots of yummy stuff this past week from the CSA.
The tale of the tortoise and the hare. They learned about fables in summer camp this year!
Big turtle, little turtle sitting on a log.
We had two huge bundles of kale that needed to be eaten and not enough time to eat them in. So I steamed them and froze them. This will be good in soups this winter.
And here’s the result of the turtle painting party! They all had a great time!
Coming up this week on the blog: another author feature, another Japan post, and maybe something else. We shall see! Have a great week everyone!

Why Can’t I Get Into And Read Fantasy? Let’s Discuss!

Let me first start off this post by saying I think some of the most beautiful prose and exciting ideas I’ve ever read were in the fantasy genre. This is not a diss on fantasy as a genre nor on fantasy authors.
Now, I wanted to have a discussion post for today and try to figure out something about myself that has perplexed me for the last few years.
Why can’t I get into fantasy? Why can’t I suspend my disbelief for this genre?
God, I wish I knew the answers to these two questions! I have hundreds of fantasy books on my Kindle that are going to turn into a waste of money if I can’t conquer this issue of mine. I have started and stopped at least twenty fantasy books in the last year, never making it past the 20% mark. Series that are raved about, beloved, are languishing away on my Kindle because I make it to the first fairy or paranormal/magical element, and I think, “I don’t believe in magic.” What the hell, Stephanie?
Most of my friends know that I’m a huge Harry Potter fan. Like MASSIVE. I stood in line for hours to get the books at midnight. THAT kind of huge. I believed in magic for Harry Potter. It wasn’t a stretch for me to think of there being a hidden world of magic right under my nose. Wands, yes! Spells and potions, sure! Dark forces behind everyday events, you betcha!
The other series I really enjoyed in the fantasy genre was the Sweep Series by Cate Tiernan. Morgan finds out that she can tap into magic, not knowing she had this power to begin with. This is another like Harry Potter where the reader finds out these powers at the same time as the protagonist. I loved this series and read every single book in it.
And I’m really enjoying Game of Thrones too (just the TV show, I haven’t read the books). I can believe in this Westeros and its hidden power and its dragons. The family drama in this series gets most of my attention. I love a good family saga.
But for some reason, every other fantasy book has been hard for me. I’ve tried second-world fantasy. I’ve tried paranormal romance. I’ve tried urban fantasy too (that one was the hardest to get through). I keep hitting the magical elements and thinking, “Nah. Could never happen.”
I’m beginning to think I’m too practical. Too cynical. Inevitably, I go back to a science fiction book where technology, and even psychic abilities that have been scientifically engineered, seem more plausible than magic.
Yeah, I should listen to that quote from one of my favorite sci-fi authors, shouldn’t I? Lol.
I think my biggest problem is that, as a person, I’ve never been able to subdue my logical, pragmatic side. I’m not a religious person, and I have trouble believing in “higher powers.” Magic and fantasy are on that same level to me.
So then what was it about Harry Potter that captivated me? I did discuss this with my friend, Amy, last year. I wonder if it was the fact that I learned about the magical world at the same time as Harry? I read the first book not long after the second one was out, so pretty early in the game. I identified with Harry, not with the magic or the world. Maybe I’m choosing the wrong fantasy books for me!
And so, let’s discuss. What do you think I can do or read to get me into fantasy? Is there a subgenere I’m missing out on that would be perfect for me? Or do you think I’m a lost cause when it comes to fantasy? Help me out, readers! Maybe some of you have been in the same situation in the past and know the perfect book for me. Now’s the time to give me your recommendations too!

An Abundance Of Zucchini

I laugh when I see this title because I have a friend, Lisa, who used to have a blog called An Abundance of Lisa.
Anyway… In an attempt to always be a little more personal on the blog without being TMI, let’s talk about my CSA, Community Supported Agriculture, share. Lol. This is my family’s third year getting a summer share of vegetables. Ours come every Tuesday, from mid-June to mid-November. I have to work three shifts to help setup which I don’t mind doing at all! It’s a lot of fun, and I like the people involved in the share.
Our biggest issue is using or freezing all of the vegetables before they go bad. I would say that we use 85-90% of what we get and compost the rest, but still, I like variety! I do a lot of searches on Pinterest and blogs to get ideas of what to make, but I thought I would ask my audience too!
Today, let’s talk zucchini or summer squash. I have a ton of squash that I’m looking to get cooked. Today, I made these Morning Glory Muffins and they’re delicious! Even my oldest kid is eating them. So that’s a plus. We’ll freeze the extra and eat them over the next few weeks.
What else do we do with zucchini? We grill them. We sauté them and add the to pasta sauces. What else should we make? Help keep this author fed and healthy!
Tell me what you like to make with zucchini!

Featuring BE STILL MY HEART By Sonia Parin

It’s time to feature another of the talented authors that I’m working with for the DESTINATION: MURDER box set! Did you know that there will be a Miso Cozy novella starring Mei, Kayo, and Akiko in this box set? You should go buy a copy! It’s only 99¢ for several great cozy mysteries set around the world!
Today, I have Sonia Parin on the on the blog to feature her book, BE STILL MY HEART.
I asked Sonia, “What is your favorite thing about this book or series?”
She replied…
From the start, I wanted to create a small town I could call home and have fun with lighthearted humor, dialogue and situations. In End of the Lane, book one in A Dear Abby Cozy Mystery, I decided to send Abby Maguire halfway around the world to a small alpine town populated by quirky characters; some could even be defined as outright odd.
As a new arrival in town, Abby Maguire is understandably concerned about fitting in and making a new life for herself but she’s soon thrown into the limelight and given little time to adjust to her new environment. She tries to remain neutral but, more often than not, she ends up going with the flow.
Writing a series gives me the opportunity to play with different characters and squeeze out as much entertainment value as I can out of them. The folk in the small town of Eden don’t just have a fundraiser picnic, they dress up in 1920s gear and try to outdo each other. The local cafe owner wields tremendous power over the town and uses her coffee as leverage to get what she wants. The local pub is owned by the Faydon family – three brothers and a sister, each one with a contrasting character trait. They weave in and out of the stories, playing the roles of sidekicks.
My contribution to the Travelogue Boxed Set will be THE LAST STOP. It’s been months since Abby Maguire made the move from Seattle to the small alpine town of Eden, Australia. Now her Iowa based travel phobic mom is coming to visit… virtually. Abby will give her the grand tour via a video link to prove Eden is a safe town. All goes well until they join a tour group and one of their fellow passengers dies.
I love quirky towns with tons of characters to get to know. Eden, Australia sound like a fun place to visit!
Abby Maguire is lagging behind with her scoops. As a reporter for the Eden Rise Gazette, she needs to be first in with the news but Eden is a small town and, even on a bad day, nothing much happens… And even then, the local café owner has shown a talent for beating her to the latest news.
After witnessing an altercation between two Eden thespian rivals, Abby hopes the annual Eden picnic fundraiser will be the perfect venue for her to witness some fireworks. Everyone has turned up, and everyone is dressed in 1920s costumes. Everyone including the dead body she finds.
The police claim it was death by natural causes. No one in Eden believes this, and everyone expects Abby Maguire to get to the bottom of the unexpected death. Someone has gone to a lot of trouble to make the death look like an accident. When she’s staring down the barrel of a gun, Abby knows she finally has her scoop.
This Cozy Mystery is a clean read, with no graphic violence, sex, or strong language but full of lots of fun, quirky dialogue and characters.

Sunday Update – July 15, 2018

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share News. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.
And we’re back to a our regular routine now! This week felt a little anticlimactic after being on vacation, but it was nice to be back and doing our thing. I got exercise most of the days of this week, even throwing in some yoga that I haven’t done for a long time. It felt good, even though I was sore the next day!
The best things about this week were definitely, (1) the July sumo tournament started! It’s great to see sumo on every day now. I miss it between tournaments. I wish I had more access to watch sumo during the off-months. (2) My youngest child turned 8 on Thursday! She’s such a big girl now, and I love her to pieces. She was super excited for her birthday and turning 8. I think she had a really nice day. She went to camp during the day and then we went to the pool in the afternoon. Then we all went out to dinner and had ice cream together.
The other big thing that happened this week was that my husband and I had a pretty awesome date on Friday. We got a babysitter, took the train into the city, had dinner at a fancy Indian restaurant (Junoon), and then went to Madison Square Garden to see Radiohead. Radiohead is one of my Top 5 Bands, and it was a bucket list item to see them in concert. I enjoyed every minute of it! We had great seats and they played lots of my favorite songs. We did the adult thing and went out for a drink after the show then took the train home. I didn’t get to bed until 1am! That’s pretty late for me now. Lol.
I took the kids to the pool as much as possible this week including all day on Saturday. And amongst all that time, I made great progress on my WIP. This is the new series that I started earlier this year! I made edits and got all caught up with the story, and now I’m writing new material too. I hope to be done with the whole book by the beginning of August.
What else happened this week…
I got some new mugs this week! The tervis cup with the octopus on it is from a store in Charleston, and the New Jersey “You Are Here” mug I bought online. I also got a Japan “You Are Here” mug. I’ll get a photo of that this week.
The park is looking pretty with lots of new flowers!
I cleaned out or “pen junk drawer” this week, which was on the to-do list for summer!
Ice cream was had after D’s birthday dinner.
We had a view straight into the kitchen at Junoon in NYC for dinner on Friday night.
Radiohead at Madison Square Garden was amazing. I cried several times. Lol.
This month’s Bokksu snack box is all citrus. My favorite! I enjoyed this snack cake and some yuzu candies.
And today I did some writing on my new Alphasmart Neo. I love it! The keyboard is so perfect for me.
Coming up this week on the blog: another author feature, a Japan post, and probably a discussion post.

Book Chat #40 – My Favorite YA Sci-fi Novels

For my 40th Book Chat, I thought I’d do something different! I have come to realize, accept, and love that Young Adult Sci-fi is probably my favorite genre to read. I love a good mystery, and I do love science fiction, but when I need something to read, I always reach for YA sci-fi first.
Did you know that REMOVED was originally written as YA sci-fi? In the first iteration, Sanaa was 16 and grappling with her fate. When I decided to self-publish, I changed her age to 20, which ultimately made a lot more sense for the story, and I haven’t written YA sci-fi since. But I still love it, and I can’t get enough.
So, I thought today, I would share with you my favorite YA sci-fi novels. YA sci-fi encompasses lots of subgenres: futuristic Earth, dystopians and utopians, local and far-flung space, post-apocalyptic, and more! So there’s always something to satisfy me.
UGLIES, PRETTIES, SPECIALS, EXTRAS by Scott Westerfeld
This is the series that got me started on YA sci-fi to begin with, and it’s still a winner. I re-read UGLIES not too long ago and I still loved it. If you haven’t read this series, DO IT NOW.
THE HUNGER GAMES, CATCHING FIRE, MOCKINGJAY by Suzanne Collins
I read THE HUNGER GAMES not long after it came out because a friend of mine was working for Penguin and passed it on. I remember being drawn in by the entire series and eagerly awaiting each book.
ACROSS THE UNIVERSE, A MILLION SUNS, SHADES OF EARTH by Beth Revis
I think the same person who gave me THE HUNGER GAMES gave me the first book in this series too (she’s such an enabler). I really loved the mystery of this whole series and seeing the heroine think for herself. Plus this series uses one of my favorite sci-fi tropes, a generation ship to the stars. This whole series kept me captivated from beginning to end.
THESE BROKEN STARS, THIS SHATTERED WORLD, THEIR FRACTURED LIGHT by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner
The covers drew me to this series before I ever read the blurb. But I love that this whole story takes place in far off planetary systems and there’s a great mystery surrounding all the books. Plus, some young adult romance amongst the conflict. All things I love. I remember especially devouring the second book in this series while on vacation on year. I couldn’t put it down.
CINDER, SCARLET, CRESS, WINTER, FAIREST (Not pictured) by Marissa Meyer
Here’s a series that started out slow for me. I remember reading CINDER and thinking, “Hmmm, I don’t know,” because I called all of the twists. But I loved world and the characters, and I figured that, with more books, I was bound to be surprised with the outcome. And I was. Boy, am I glad I kept reading! I still haven’t read FAIREST but I plan to soon. I have a signed-by-the-author copy sitting on my shelf.
THE FORGETTING by Sharon Cameron
This book totally blew me away. At first, you’re not sure if it’s sci-fi or some post-apocalyptic Earth, but by the 50% mark, you begin to really see this world for what it is. I’ll admit that the second book in the series did not grab me like the first book did, and I’ve set it aside to try and read it again in the future. But this first book stands on its own. You don’t want to miss it.
DEFY THE STARS, DEFY THE WORLDS by Claudia Gray
I listened to both of these in audiobook and they were a treat! This future has Earth as part of a conglomerate of worlds all linked with gates. Its world-building is strong and the characters are fun and easy to get to know. I loved every second of both of these.
FOR DARKNESS SHOWS THE STARS by Diana Peterfreund
This book. Sigh. I’ll admit that I personally know this author (we’re friends!) but that doesn’t sway my opinion in any way. I love that it’s Jane Austen in a future Earth, a future Earth that has shunned genetic advancement. The heroine is strong and yet still vulnerable. I loved her to pieces. Diana’s writing is rich and beautiful, and her world sucked me in immediately. I still have to read the second book in the series, but I’ve queued it up and hope to read it this summer.
UNWIND, UNWHOLLY, UNSOULED, UNDIVIDED by Neal Shusterman
I really thought this series was dead after the first book. I read it when it first came out AGES ago (I was still living in Brooklyn so pre-2010) and then there was nothing but crickets. But eventually the rest of the series came out and I consumed them all on audiobook. This is a scary future, of people being “unwound” for their body parts. But Shusterman took the theme and ran with it. The story was compelling from beginning to end. I’m currently listening to the first in his new series, SCYTHE, and enjoying that one too.
LIFE AS WE KNEW IT by Susan Beth Pfeffer
I only read this first book in the series and the rest I plan to read at some point, but this book stuck with me for years after I read it. It was so moving and immediate. And it made me want to horde canned goods something fierce. It could be the zombie apocalypse without the zombies and that’s probably why I really liked it.
LEGEND, PRODIGY, CHAMPION by Marie Lu
And here’s the last of my recommendation, a series I’m glad I stuck with. The first book annoyed me in print because of the way they designed the book, so pick this one up in ebook. This is another future world dystopia but had some very interesting characters with a believable and rich romance. I fell in love by the second book and the third book left me in tears, good tears.
So that’s it! Hope you found something here to read! These are all my favorites and I hope they become your favorites too.
Do you have some YA sci-fi to recommend to me? Please leave your recommendations in the comments!

Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Wrestling – Traveling In Japan 2018 Series

Since the July Sumo tournament is currently under way, I thought today would be a great day to talk about my sumo experience in Japan!
I arrived in Japan in the middle of the May 2018 tournament this time around. Did I have tickets for a day of sumo? No, I did not. Originally, when we had been planning my trip to Japan, I was supposed to go two weeks later which would’ve put me at the tail-end, if not after, the tournament. When I heard that news, I dismissed any idea of going to a sumo match and prepared planning other things for my trip. Then my husband found a better deal on airfare, and my trip was moved up by two weeks. By this time, though, the tickets were sold out and I knew I wouldn’t be able to attend.
That’s okay, though! Because I knew where the tournament would be, and I figured there’d be plenty going on around the stadium that day. I would just go and have some fun soaking in the atmosphere.

Here’s something you should know about me. My husband and I watch every sumo tournament together, and we have been watching for a few years now. There are six tournaments per year on every odd numbered month — January, March, May, July, September, and November. So there’s plenty of sumo happening every year. NHK World produces a Sumo Highlights reel for every day of the tournament in English, and these are available on their app, if you’re interested. It’s gotten to the point where I can recognize sumo wrestlers, name them, talk about their style of sumo, and even have my favorites. I’m a fan, for sure.
Wikimedia CC Attribution 2.0 – This image was originally posted to Flickr by GregTheBusker at https://flickr.com/photos/17004938@N00/16598159178
So I arrived at Ryogoku Kokugikan ready to spot sumo wrestlers, and spot them I did. Ryogoku Kokugikan is the main sumo stadium in Tokyo. It’s easily accessible by the Tokyo Metro, so I followed the map and signs and arrived at the stadium around 1pm, around the same time wrestlers would be showing up to compete.
Wikimedia CC Attribution Share Alike 4.0 – Mituo.toko68
I got lucky. I found the area where people were waiting to see sumo wrestlers, I got in behind a few shorter people (I’m 5’8″), got my iPhone on the Smooth Q gimbal, and started recording. It was really exciting for me! I got to see some of my favorite sumo rikishi (rikishi = wrestler/s) and cheer them on. Plus the crowd was a lot of fun. One guy (you can hear him in the background and see him at around 3:25 in the video below) was already three beers into his day, knew every wrestler by sight, and had something funny to say or a dance to do with every entrance. He was a blast.
After I was done sumo spotting, I walked along the outside of the arena before heading back to the hotel to watch the matches and then out to dinner.
So, if you’re ever in Japan and near the stadium for one of the tournaments, I highly recommend dropping by before the matches start and spending some time in the crowds. There’s still plenty to see and do, even without tickets.

Featuring POSIES AND POISON By Wendy Meadows

It’s time to feature another of the talented authors that I’m working with for the DESTINATION: MURDER box set! Did you know that there will be a Miso Cozy novella starring Mei, Kayo, and Akiko in this box set? You should go buy a copy! It’s only 99¢ for several great cozy mysteries set around the world!
Today, I have Wendy Meadows on the on the blog to feature her book, POSIES AND POISON.
I asked Kathryn, “Why did you write POSIES AND POISON?”
She replied…
I love the coast of Maine and thought it would be fun to write about a fictitious bed and breakfast there.
I’m not surprised that so many of us in the DESTINATION: MURDER box set are inspired by our travels.
