Featuring RISE OF THE SEER By Brandon Barr

This author feature is a little different today. I featured Brandon Barr in my newsletters in the past because he was a fantastic and eloquent author and also a good friend. Tragically, Brandon passed away on Wednesday after spending several years fighting leukemia. I’m saddened by this loss, and I’ve spent the last few days thinking of him.

I loved talking to and spending online time with Brandon. We briefly worked on a Scifi and Fantasy project together, a project we both had a lot of love for but not a lot of time. I was super busy with family and writing, and he was busy with the same while also fighting cancer. We had a lot in common though! We both liked the same kind of epic stories and we talked of our favorite stories and sharing them with the world.

One of the beautiful things about being an author is that our work will live on far beyond our deaths. The proceeds can continue to go to our families and help out even though we’re not around anymore. Once Brandon found out that he only had a few months to live, he kept on writing and many fantasy authors were there to help get his books to publication so his wife and three young boys could get the support they need.

Usually in these feature posts I ask the author to tell us about their books. I’m unable to do that today, but here’s what Brandon had to say to Epic Fantasy Fanatics in his last days…

Fantasy fiction is a blessing in that it allows authors to tell heroic stories that WE need to hear. We may sit in an office chair half the day, or be stuck in traffic, or need to get groceries, or this or that; but fantasy fiction touches deep into something that humans long for. That under our suits and ties or tee-shirt and jeans, we have a hero or heroine inside of us. They may be timid, but this heroic person inside of us is an admirer of fantasy stories where they can identify with the characters, root and cheer for them, and in some cases, want to be them (even if the going is very difficult). We long to fix the world by going on a quest, or throwing the One Ring into Mount Doom, or playing out some great prophetic role like Paul Atreides in Frank Herbert’s sci-fi fantasy classic, Dune.

So very true.

If you love fantasy, you should definitely pick up RISE OF THE SEER and check out Brandon’s other books too. Remember that by purchasing his books, you’re also helping out his family now that he’s gone. There’s also a Go Fund Me to help Brandon’s family as they deal with his passing.

I know I will miss Brandon. May he rest in peace.

Two women. Two worlds. One epic destiny.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I’m not really a holiday person so much, but I’ve grown to love Thanksgiving over the years. We celebrate with family by driving out to Long Island and spending the day eating, talking, laughing, and having fun. The kids enjoy it, and so do we, sitting at the table all day long. It’s not about the turkey, although it may be about the mashed potatoes. Wow, I love mashed potatoes. Someday let me tell you about my cousin, Matt, and his mashed potato mountains as a kid.

Another thing to love about this holiday is how it gives me a day to really reflect on the things I’m thankful for. I’m definitely thankful for my family, both my immediate family of my awesome husband and two great kids. But also my extended family, my in-laws, my parents and brother and his family, my cousins and all their families. I’m also thankful for my friends, for Tracy Krimmer, and all the people I see online on a daily basis.

I’m also thankful for my writing and for the readers who have come with that. Every day that I sit down to write is a gift. I haven’t had much success at the business of writing, BUT I am following my passion and doing the thing I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid. There was a period of time in my 20s and early 30s where I thought I’d never have a good story to tell! And now look at how many I’ve told! I’m thankful the gift of storytelling has finally come to me, after so many years of hard work and waiting. I’m also thankful for the few readers out there, you all, who have shared in my stories. That’s probably the greatest gift you could ever give a writer. Seriously. I’m so thankful for each of you!

So today, on this Thanksgiving, I’m feeling happy and content for all the riches of this life.

And I hope you all have a lovely holiday, or a lovely Thursday, if you’re not celebrating.

Sunday Update – November 18, 2018

Late post tonight because we just got back from roller skating with the Girl Scouts!

It was a hit-the-ground-running week around here. We got back from our vacation and went straight into Monday. I worked through the last grammar check and proofreading of Flyght Book 1 all week. Now that’s done! Just needs to go off to my final proofreader. We also had our last CSA share this week. I can’t believe all the good veggies are over for the season! So sad.

Wednesday, we had our most stressful day. I cut my whole day short for chiropractor and acupuncture. Then got the kids early from school to take them to the doctor for their yearly checkup. They did great! I can’t believe my oldest kid is already 5’5″! Holy smokes! How did she get so big? Then we got stuck in traffic on our way to tennis and missed the first fifteen minutes. Sigh. We ordered fish tacos and quesadillas afterward, and usually, that goes just fine. But the waitress misheard my order and we got the wrong food! Ugh! We had to get back in the car and go back and exchange it. I love this restaurant, though, and they know me, so even though I was inconvenienced, I’m not mad or anything. Shit happens.

Thursday was great until it snowed! I had pottery and a dentist appointment in the morning and then I went to get groceries. By the time I was out of the store, the snow was falling lightly. By the time the kids got out of school, it was coming down and it was wet and heavy. I got us home and we hunkered down. That night, my husband left Manhattan at 5:30PM and didn’t make it home until after 9PM! We live only about 18 miles from the city! Crazy. I’m just glad he made it home safely.

On Friday, we thought the kids had a delayed opening for school, but then they ended up canceling it altogether. I shoveled snow and it was so heavy! Ugh. I hate snow (you all know that). My back is a little sore but not too bad. I’m in better shape than I used to be. I worked on my website pretty much all day.

Yesterday, I made playdoh for my youngest kid and I spent the day working more on my website. I think most of the main updates are done!

Today, I took some time off to just sit and read. Then I got on the treadmill and walked and started my edits on Flyght Book 2. I had an early dinner and took both my girls to the roller rink for some roller skating and roller blading with the Girl Scouts. They had fun and got the hang of it by the end. Now, I’m having a Singapore Sling and enjoying some sumo!

What else happened this week?

Here’s my new Starbucks You Are Here mug! I have lots of these now but I’m happy to get them from the places I’ve been. They’re my favorite mugs.

The house next to us got it’s second floor this week. Man, there’s been a lot of construction noise lately.

Last trip around the maze during CSA pickup!

This is my last bowl of this pottery class! Only two more classes left.

Building a snowman.

Made playdoh for the youngest. I hate the way it smells so I add lavender essential oils!

I got this knitting guide ring and I like it. I just need to get used to using it, but it will give my fingers a break from holding the yarn.

And we finished off the week with roller skating! But not me because I didn’t want to hurt myself. Lol. Maybe next time.

Have a great week everyone!

Let’s Celebrate #RRSciFiMonth with ARRIVAL, THE LONG WAY TO A SMALL ANGRY PLANET, and The Nogiku Series

Photo by Greg Rakozy on Unsplash.

It’s Sci-Fi Month! Which I didn’t know about until very recently, so I’m glad I found out before the month was over! Science fiction is my very favorite genre. It’s the genre I have loved since I was a teen, and I have never fallen out of love with it, as I have with other genres throughout my life. It’s also the genre I love to write the most. Something about space and the future charms and inspires me. My stories inevitably gravitate towards science fiction, and I know it’s what I’ve been called to write.

Today we’re going to celebrate Sci-Fi Month with a movie, a book, and one of my own series (which is on sale on Kobo).

Quiet Science Fiction

One of my favorite “brands” of science fiction is quiet science fiction. It’s the intellectual contemplation and promise of understanding whether of humans or aliens. It’s not guns and aliens and blowing up the White House like in Independence Day. Quiet science fiction showcases sciences and disciplines like linguistics and math, relationships, and mirroring humanity in futuristic colonies or alien species.

Besides INTERSTELLAR, my favorite quiet science fiction movie is ARRIVAL. I recently rewatched it and it was just as wonderful the second time through. When alien ships show up over 12 areas over Earth, everyone scrambles to figure out what they want. A linguist, Louise Banks, is called in to listen the aliens’ language and work with a team of people to translate and find out why the aliens have come. But the real story is really about Louise’s life and her eventual entangling with the aliens and how they influence her future.

I’ll admit that I cried both times I watched this movie. It’s so touching and wonderful. And when the pieces all come together, it’s surprising in an ingenious way. I still need to read the short story this movie is based on. I’ll have to do that soon.

Hitch a Ride on the Wayfarer

Another thing I love about science fiction are ensemble casts aboard spaceships. Firefly? Love, love, love it. Star Trek? Star Wars? Yes, yes, yes. Something about putting a crew aboard a starship and sending them into the unknown is totally appealing to me. My FLYGHT SERIES, which publishes late summer 2019, will also have an ensemble cast on a spaceship.

When I read the blurb for THE LONG WAY TO A SMALL ANGRY PLANET by Beck Chambers and saw that it’s also a spaceship filled with interesting people heading into the unknown, I bought it immediately. It was a great coincidence that this book is the highlight of #RRSciFiMonth too!

I read most of this book on my vacation last week next to the pool (as it should be) and I was glued to my Kindle. I knew right away that I was going to finish and love this book. I’ve given up on so many books lately, it was a treat to find one that was a joy from start to finish. I’m not a huge fan of “aliens,” believe it or not, because they all seem to be just humans in a different form. So I really loved Becky Chambers take on all her alien species. They felt unique and believable. And I was dialed into everyone on the ship for their entire journey to the small, angry planet and back home.

This book is currently #1 in LGBT Science Fiction, and though it does have one LGBT plot line, I would say it’s a book that accepts pairings in whatever form they come in. Human-human, human-alien, same sex, gay, or straight, it had them all and they all felt very natural. I really loved that part. It warmed my heart and made me smile to see people — be them aliens or humans — connect. We need more books in the world like this!

I really loved this book, and I immediately bought the second book once I read a few reviews from people who claimed to love it even more than the first! That’s a huge recommendation!

A future Japanese domed city

My other favorite science fiction device is future cities! What can we expect to find in those cities? Are cars flying? Are they dark and grungy? Or sunny and green? I love building future and science fiction cities.

My favorite future city is still Nishikyō, the last capital on Earth, for my Nogiku Series. I imagined a future after wars and a huge environmental decline where the Japanese were the last surviving majority on Earth. I gave Nishikyō domes to protect it from the harsh elements and Kus (districts) where people would live and work. I kept the Japanese culture alive in many ways but mixed it with other cultures too. And then I focused the story on one young woman and her struggle with a destiny she just didn’t expect.

What I loved most about building Nishikyō was seeing it in my dreams every night. I can picture the streets, the people, the way living under domes would shape them into the people they are. Nishikyō now is just as real to me as New York City or any other place I’ve visited in life, just like Shin Osaka is from the Hikoboshi Series, and Concord City and Oitavo and Sakata City are now from my upcoming Flyght Series. Future cities can be just as compelling as characters!

I have a deal going on right now at Kobo! Get the monster 5-book Nogiku Series Omnibus for 40% off through November 19, 2018. Discount: Use promo code 40NOV at checkout.

I hope you enjoy #RRSciFiMonth!

Featuring A SIGHT FOR PSYCHIC EYES By Kelly Hashway

It’s been a while since I featured a cozy mystery for all of my cozy readers! This one is currently free so pick it up while the getting’s good.

I asked Kelly, “Why did you write A SIGHT FOR PSYCHIC EYES?”

Kelly replied…

I’ve always been fascinated by the sixth sense. I think we all have it to some degree—you know those moments when you just know something is going to happen before it actually happens. Well, I did some research and discovered something called psychometry, which is where a person can read the energy off objects. It intrigued me so much that I had to write about a psychic P.I. who could do just that.

Oh cool! I didn’t know about psychometry. I’m going to have to learn more about that particular psychic power. This sounds like a great jumping off point for a novel!

Being psychic doesn’t mean private investigator Piper Ashwell has all the answers.

She’s surrounded by people who either don’t believe in her abilities or want her to solve all the world’s problems.

When nine-year-old Eric Danson goes missing in the middle of the night, Piper is reminded of her first case ever, when she was only twelve years old and her ability to read objects first surfaced. Now, she’s hoping to use that ability to bring the boy home unharmed.

But things only get worse when the boy who’s been bullying Eric goes missing as well. With a kidnapper on the loose, Piper will need to prove she’s the best P.I for the case. But can she find the boys before it’s too late?

Sunday Update – November 11, 2018

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

This Sunday post is publishing on Monday because we got back from our trip last night, and I was just too tired to get it on the blog.

We had a great week on vacation this week! It felt good to be in a warm location and away from the everyday grind.

Monday was a fairly normal day around here, though my husband took the day off from work.

Tuesday morning, we left early to get to the airport and get our mid-morning flight to Tampa. Everything went moderately well there except that we were delayed for take-off. We were supposed to land in Tampa around 12:30 but then we didn’t make it there till around 2pm. We picked up our rental car and got on the road to Orlando right away so as not to lose time. Once we got to our hotel, we ran into some issues with our rooms. We booked adjacent, connected rooms for us and the kids, and they didn’t have them. But after a lot of poking around, the front desk worker found two rooms for us but we just needed to wait until housekeeping got them cleaned. So we got changed and went out to the pool for a few hours. Once we got into our rooms, we changed again and went out to dinner. Unfortunately, the parks close at 7PM! What? So we couldn’t go to the parks our first day.

Wednesday, we hit the parks bright and early. I love theme parks, I really do, but they are tiring! We walked EVERYWHERE that first day, went on a ton of rides and saw pretty much everything. The kids got wands in Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley and we saw pretty much everything there. We took the train from Diagon Alley to Hogsmeade (which is in a different park) and saw everything there. It’s all a blur now, but I feel like we did pretty much 70% of the two main parks on our first day. I WAS BEAT by the end of it. BEAT. And yet, I still let my 8-year-old convince me to go on the Hulk roller coaster, which was the scariest roller coaster I have ever been on. EVER. Jesus. At the end of the day, I had to take an Aleve to sleep. My whole body hurt!

Thursday was much better. We saw the things we hadn’t seen on the first day and took our time walking around. We used our Fast Passes to get us into pretty much everything. There was only one roller coaster I wish I had gone on but didn’t make it to. Maybe someday I’ll go back and see it.

On Friday, we checked out, went the parks again to return a few things and buy a few things we missed and then got in the car and drove back to Tampa. We stayed in the city that my brother lives in (just north-ish from Tampa by about 20 miles) and spent the afternoon and evening with my family. We all went out to dinner together and then went to a school carnival in the evening.

On Saturday, we slept in and had breakfast at the hotel, then used the hotel pool for a bit. Then after lunch, we met up with my family again to go to their community pool for the afternoon. Afterward, we went back to my brother’s house, all had dinner together, then went out for frozen yogurt and checked out the Christmas display at the local mall. It was such a great time and the kids had a lot of fun. I miss my family already.

On Sunday, we were due to fly home and be home in the early afternoon. But once again, our flight was delayed by SEVERAL hours this time. Super annoying. The plane had technical problems in Texas before it was to fly to Newark and THEN to Tampa to get us. So it was delayed by several hours and cities. The flight that was supposed to take off at 1PM and get us home around 4PM didn’t take off from Tampa until around 4PM. So we went to the Florida Aquarium in the morning to pass time and had a real lunch before heading to the airport. I had a giant iced tea to get me through, and we made it home at close to 7PM. We ate dinner and went to bed! That’s about all that could be done!

Today it’s back to the same-old same-old around here. I’m about to head out for a walk!

Here are some photos from our week!

We had access to the airport lounge on the outbound trip so we all spent time there before leaving the northeast.

Scenes from Hogwarts, Hogsmeade, and Dragon Alley! I enjoyed the butterbeer a lot. I bought chocolate frogs AND peppermint toads. The Knight Bus and Platform 9 3/4 were all great too.

Dr. Seuss land was fun but trippy.

Nothing like relaxing by the pool at the end of the day.

Christmas is already on display in most of Florida.

Love the “dessert sushi” my daughter got with her grilled cheese at the sushi place we went to.

We saw lemurs at the Florida Aquarium.

The cousins had a great time together.

And I got my usual You Are Here souvenir mug!

Have a great week everyone!

Book Chat #43 – Mary Robinette Kowal, Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner, Richard K. Morgan, and John Scalzi

I haven’t done a Book Chat since the beginning of September! And unfortunately I don’t have a lot of books to show for two months of reading, mostly because I was writing a lot, but also because I had quite a few did-not-finish books that I won’t go into here.

THE FATED SKY by Mary Robinette Kowal

Guys, this series is AMAZING. I was so excited to get back into this universe after THE CALCULATING STARS and this book did not disappoint. I loved every moment of this trip to Mars. It was so well thought out and plausible, human and touching. I did not want it to end. It’s official, I’m a Lady Astronaut fan! And I’m super excited to learn there’ll be a lot more books in this series. Yay!

UNEARTHED by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

I mentioned this book once or twice in my sci-fi tropes post a few weeks ago. I really enjoyed the Starbound Trilogy by this author duo, so I had to pick this one up. It was just what I needed after trying to read two failed books in a row. (Let’s not get into that.) If I had to describe this book I’d say it was Indiana Jones on a faraway planet with a great little romance and lots of surprises. The ending was quite the cliffhanger! I have pre-ordered Book 2 and I hope it’s just as fun.

ALTERED CARBON by Richard K. Morgan

It took me a VERY long time to get through this audiobook. VERY. And I ended up having to fast-forward through the sex scenes. Maybe it’s just me, but I can’t read sex written by men anymore. It’s just not at all appealing. This story, though, is just as great as the TV show it’s based upon.

THE CONSUMING FIRE by John Scalzi

As soon as I was done with ALTERED CARBON, I jumped right on THE CONSUMING FIRE and was rewarded with another fast-paced, funny, and intriguing John Scalzi book. There’s a reason why John Scalzi is my favorite author, and you can see it in this series. A wide-sweeping story! Funny and interesting characters! (Kiva Lagos in my official favorite.) Lots of surprises and twists! This book and series has it all. I caught myself laughing out loud while walking in the park, mainly because Wil Wheaton’s delivery was so on-point. This series is a joy in audio. I highly recommend it.

And that’s it for this Book Chat! There were other books read (one beta read for a friend and lots of re-reading my own work) and plenty I didn’t finish or like, but these were the best of the bunch. Hope they give you some ideas of what to try next!

Sunday Update – November 4, 2018

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

Note: The next few weeks are going to be very light for content around here. I’m going on vacation, and I’m also editing two books and outlining the next Miso Cozy Mysteries book. I plan to have about two posts per week, and that’s about it. But December should bring back some more Japan-related and discussion posts! I like to write about Japan here when I’m writing a Miso Cozy Mystery book. It’s a good pairing of non-fiction and fiction.

This was another week that flew right on by! And mostly because I caught a cold and was laid up sick for most of the week.

On Monday, I spent the day resting and getting my Flyght 2 novel out to first readers. It felt great to send it out knowing that I had finished another book, a book I really enjoyed writing.

On Tuesday, I had planned to just relax but I woke up with a sore throat and an oncoming cold. I had a few errands to run in the morning, but then I spent the afternoon on the couch re-watching ARRIVAL, which was just as amazing the second time through.

Wednesday was Halloween. The kids went to school in their costumes and they had a half day. I took some cold medication and went to my youngest’s school for the Halloween parade and sing-off. It was cute and a lot of fun but I was wiped out by the time it was over. Thankfully, my husband worked from home that day and was able to cover for me as I rested. He took the young one out for trick-or-treating and I stayed home to cook. In the end, it was a fun day for both kids.

Thursday, I was still a little under the weather but not too bad, so I went to pottery. I got back a few more pots from the kiln. Several of them had issues with the glaze, which was a bit disappointing, but also a lesson in that pottery is not perfect nor easy to do. I have a long way to go before I figure a lot of this stuff out. I then met up with my buddy, Amy, for lunch at Panera even though I was in all of my pottery gear. I worked on edits to Flyght 1 for the rest of the day.

On Friday, I rested some more in the morning, got my haircut, and then picked up groceries. The afternoon was spent working on edits to Flyght 1 and taking my kids for their pottery class. My husband had a meeting in the Midwest, so he was gone all day, flying there and flying home.

Saturday and Sunday have been spent editing, sleeping, and recovering from this cold. It’s almost 100% gone. I feel lucky that it didn’t morph into a sinus infection as well.

We will be leaving on vacation this week, so expect only one post to the blog, a Book Chat, somewhere around Thursday!

What else happened this week?

So, I got this shirt that has pockets in it, and I love it!

Here’s one of the pots that didn’t turn out so nicely. The glaze broke on this one and several others. Still lots to learn here!

Halloween was lots of fun! We had lots of candy and hardly any trick-or-treaters.

Here’s the pumpkins only two days later. Yikes!

Finished Flyght Book 2! Right on track too.

The park is looking beautiful!

I’m staying warm with my hand knits.

And there are lots of leaves down in the street!

Have a great week everyone!

November 2018 Goals

October was one of my better months!

What Happened With Octobers’s Goals?

Continue writing Flyght Book 2. I FINISHED THIS!! So excited to be done and way before the end of the month. I’ve had a few days off and it’s been nice to relax. This book is out with my first readers now.

Continue website maintenance. I did very little website maintenance because I went 100% on the writing of Flyght 2.

Set up evergreen campaigns through November. My goal was to set up a new evergreen campaign every Monday. I kept this going! I think I only missed one Monday which was this past Monday.

Set up all the Pinterest images for the Miso Cozy Mysteries Series and the Hikoboshi Series. I did not do this, unfortunately. I was writing a ton. I’ll move this to November.

Keep up my Pinterest campaign.I remembered to jump onto Pinterest here and there to pin stuff but I wasn’t as active as I wanted to be.

Continue to keep away from sweets and keep practicing intermittent fasting. I kept the intermittent fasting going. Sweets? Well, I love them, so I’m trying to be good and not overindulge.

Keep knitting! I’m still knitting when I can. I didn’t knit at all last week, or read for that matter. But now I have some time.

More of the same: walking, yoga, reading. Walking, yes. Yoga, only did one session this whole month. Reading, I read something early in the month and haven’t read anything since.

A Look Back At October

Business Goals For November

Edit both Flyght Books 1 and 2. I’m not doing NaNoWriMo because I’ll be editing instead. I want these books to be at 98% by the end of the month. Ready to go off to my proofreader.

Setup pre-orders on the non-Amazon vendors for Flyght 1 and 2. I have the cover for Book 1. Books 2 and 3 covers are coming soon. Once Books 1 and 2 are done with edits, I’ll put them up for pre-order. Currently I’m looking at September 6th, 2019 for Book 1 and October 4th, 2018 for Book 2. I plan to send out ARCs to readers at the beginning of summer.

Continue website maintenance. Since I’m not writing, I’ll have more time for website maintenance. I need to make it through a few more months of posts to clean up.

Set up evergreen campaigns through December. Same as last month. Set up a campaign for every Monday.

Set up all the Pinterest images for the Miso Cozy Mysteries Series and the Hikoboshi Series. I feel I can do this this month because I’ll just be editing.

Personal Goals For November

Go on vacation and really go on vacation. Meaning don’t bring work with me. Yeah. We’re going away for a few days next week and I’d like to really enjoy my time with my family.

Intermittent fasting, knitting, walking, yoga, reading, and pottery. All of the usual stuff!

Featuring THE RELISSARIUM WARS By Andrew Broderick

I love space opera, so I asked Andrew Broderick to drop by today to tell us about his new series!

I asked Andrew, “Why did you want to write THE RELISSARIUM WARS?”

He replied…

With this series, I wanted to write some true space opera, aka “science fiction without the science.” There’s no explanation of how a warp drive works here, but there is nonstop action, and a colorful multi-species cast of characters.

Nonstop action and a colorful cast of characters! Both things I enjoy in my space opera.

An interplanetary war without rules. A heartless enemy. One farmer’s fateful choice could transform the galaxy…

4 books of action-packed space opera with portals to endless new dimensions!

Theo is tired of working so hard to just barely feed his family. Turning to illicit dealings to supplement his income seems like the perfect crime, until a deadly double-cross puts a target on his chest. To protect his wife and children, he’ll have to exchange favors with a dangerous rebel group…

After suffering a tragic blow, there are no lengths to which Theo won’t go to have revenge. With new dangers lurking on every mission, he must join the ranks of the rebels and fight his way to freedom… or die trying.

As a civil war rages and the lines blur between good and evil, will Theo have to sacrifice his humanity to avenge his past?

The Relissarium Wars: Books 1-4 contains the first four books in a page-turning space opera series. If you like fast-paced action, intricate world building, and characters who never give up, then you’ll love Andrew Broderick’s intergalactic saga.
