Sunday Update – July 31, 2016

2016-07-30_000112631_E4B89_iOS

How is July over? My summer is flying by in a blink! Some of you know that summer is my absolute favorite season. I look forward to it all year. I love the hot weather, being outside, going to the pool, all of that. I love the green trees and grass. I love the sun and the beach. Sigh. All of it. I love it. So seeing July already over fills me with dread for winter. I still have August though and August will contain many great things including my trip to Japan! So I mustn’t get all maudlin about summer speeding by.

Anyway, this week went by fast too. I barely remember what happened! I did a lot of cooking. We ate those muffins I made last week. We went to the pool several times and I ran a lot of errands. Did my usual trip to the chiropractor too. Oh! I remember. We had a moment when we thought our air conditioning died. We do need to replace the unit as it’s about 15 years old, but we don’t want to do that when it’s 90ºF outside. Turned out that a part inside (the capacitor) had gone bad. The repair guy swapped in a new one and we were up and running in no time. So that was good, but it did impact my days because I had to wait around for someone to show up.

I got some writing done. I’m chugging along with the third Daydreamer book and I hope to be almost done (at least in the third act) by the time I leave for Japan. The writing is going well. I plotted out the first act, wrote it, and then realized something was missing. It was too short. So I did some brainstorming and now I’m adding in scenes to bring it up to snuff. Once I’m done with the first act, I’ll plot the second act, and then write that. This is how I tackle all my books lately. I have an overall goal and destination for the book plus some ideas of what I want to happen. But I plot an act, write an act, plot, write. Seems to be working for me!

What else happened this week?

2016-07-26_010406655_979DF_iOS

I passed the 10k mark on Daydreamer 3! It’s just shy of 15k now.

How Not To Give A F*ck – Temper Your Expectations

SJ Pajonas How Not To Give A Fck

In this continuing series, I will show you how not to give a fuck about your book rejections, bad reviews, and disappointing sales. Please see the table of contents at the bottom of this post for more in this series.

This is a lesson that’s usually learned the hard way, but if you can learn it up front, you have a lot less work to do. Plenty of authors go into this business thinking their manuscripts are hot shit and they’ll sell really well. They think they know the market, that their book is perfect, and the NY Times bestseller list is only a few weeks away.

And I’m sure you’re reading that last sentence and thinking, “But surely, she isn’t talking about me. I’m going to make it big.” This is me over here laughing at you. You’re precious, really, you are. The sad fact of the matter is that so few authors “make it big time,” meaning they have immediate success and are able to make a living off writing right away. And quite frankly, very few authors even can consider themselves mid-list authors after a few books published. Being an author is a career where you start out at the very bottom and work your way up. And I do mean work. You will need to work for every sale, every review, every bit of word of mouth you can get.

If you go into this business knowing this ahead of time, you’ll be better off. Temper your expectations! Understand what’s ahead of you. Lots of authors nowadays quit in the first year because they weren’t prepared for what’s to come. The first year is the hardest. You will work, blood, sweat, and quite a few tears into your manuscript, your business plan, you advertising plan, and everything else you have to do before the first book is out. Then the first book is out! You celebrate! Now what? You go back to work, immediately if possible. You promote the first book while you get the second one ready to publish. There are no breaks. If you rest, you lose momentum. It is extremely easy to burn-out, especially in the first five years when this is your pace. Especially if you want to make a livable wage at this.

Sounds exhausting, right?

Sounds exhausting, right?

Temper your expectations! If you want to go slower, you can but know that income will slow down too until you’ve reach a point where your backlist sells as strongly as your new releases. If you want to change genres, you can but know that your readers may not follow you and you’ll have to build a new audience. Anything can be done if you know what you’re getting yourself into.

If you’re prepared and ready to live this author life before you go to publication, you’ll be less likely to obsess over the numbers because you came in ready to work for a long time BEFORE you got those numbers.

Now, I don’t want to be all doom and gloom here because, honestly, being an author is an AMAZING career, and there are hundreds of things you can do to make things easy for yourself and improve your odds at doing well. You can write a whole series before you publish the first one. You can build a mailing list ahead of time. You can do your research before you publish your first book! So don’t fear! It’s hard but it’s also fun and rewarding, too. By improving your odds, you make it less likely that you’ll fail, less likely you’ll be crying over the lack of sales or the bad reviews. You’ll be working hard and not paying attention to those things!

How To Read For Cheap Or Free Without Pirating!

SJ Pajonas How To Read For Cheap Or Free Without Pirating

I’ve been thinking about this post for a few months since I’ve been watching a lot of pirating of my books and my friends books happen online. I know that times are tough for people. Readers want to read and they see all of these amazing books online, then they realize they can just download them from a torrent or a free ebook site, so they go the cheapest route possible and do that. I can’t tell you how heartbreaking this is for authors, to know that people justify downloading pirated ebooks because they’re “broke.” Most authors are starving artists too. We barely scrape by. And our income drops when more people download our books from pirate sites instead of paying for them or getting them legitimately for free.

But here’s the awesome news for most readers. You could probably go an entire year or two or five reading quality books for FREE (or super cheap) without pirating or stealing. And you could also “pay back” those authors by leaving reviews on those books when you’re through.

Here are my top resources for acquiring books for free or cheap. They should be applicable to just about ANY region of the world. If you can’t find one way on this list to read books for free or cheap, please leave suggestions in the comments and I will get to researching for you.

Library

First and foremost, join your local library. If your local library is on top of things, they not only have hardcovers and paperbacks, but they acquire new titles frequently. If they don’t have something you want, ask them to help you out and order it, either for them or from other local libraries. Be sure to stop by your local library often. Many of them sell used books once or twice a year for dirt cheap in order to raise money for the library. You want to get in on that. Plenty of people, myself included, donate good quality books to the library for these sales. Sign up for their newsletter and, if you have an eReader, see if you can get ebooks too.

Little Free Library

GO TO – https://littlefreelibrary.org

Search the Little Free Library and see if there’s one near you. None close by? Consider starting one of your own, loading it up with the paperbacks you already read, and see if others will come by and exchange books!

Borrow Books From Friends

Set up a book swap with friends a few times per month or start a Facebook group with local friends and swap in there. This is one of my favorite methods of reading more because this way you get to hear about new authors from a trusted source!

Use Amazon’s Lending Feature (or Amazon’s Prime Lending Library)

Ask friends to loan you books from Amazon using the lending feature. This is not always turned on for every book, but many do have it. Amazon also gives you a free book per month if you’re a Prime member (though I’m not sure you would be a Prime member if you’re broke, but it’s worth pointing out this exists.)

Paperback Book Swap

GO TO – http://www.paperbackbookswap.com

This one is for all the people who love their paperbacks and have a little money for shipping. I love Paperback Book Swap. Put your books up there that you want to give away. When people claim them, you send them their books and you get a credit. You can then use your credit to request books be sent to you. All you pay is shipping and a small site fee to PBS for helping out in the transaction. This is a great way to find new books and get rid of old ones.

Ebook Newsletters

Subscribe to ALL THE NEWSLETTERS! These are so worth it. These companies will send you a newsletter every day with ebooks that are discounted, 99¢, or free. Please remember to leave reviews if you get these books for cheap! They really help out authors and publishers.

Here’s a list of many newsletter (but not all because there are SO MANY)

There. That’s enough to get you started. In no time you will have so many free books, you will probably cry with joy.

Author Newsletters

If you love a particular author or many, sign up for their newsletters. They will often send out alerts about their books being on sale or free. SOMETIMES, if you open emails often, you will be more likely to get asked to read their books for free. Now, NOT ALL AUTHORS DO THIS, but many do. Many will open their newsletter lists, look for active subscribers, segment them off, and offer them Advanced Review/Reader Copies of their books in exchange for an honest review. Maybe you’ll get lucky and be invited. Whatever you do, though, don’t press the issue. Nagging an author for free books is a big NO-NO. We work hard to bring you the books we write. Giving our books away for free is AT OUR DISCRETION. Advanced Review Copies are a privilege, not a right. Please respect that.

Google Surveys

GO TO – https://www.google.com/insights/consumersurveys/google_opinion_rewards

This is a hidden gem! Did you know that if you answer Google Consumer Surveys you can earn rewards in the Google Play Store? Which can then be used to buy books? I know tons of people who do this. They answer a few surveys, make some virtual cash, and then go spend it on books. Is that genius or what? I have an iPhone so I’ve never done this because everyone I know does this on Android. BUT if you do have an Android phone or tablet, you should totally do this. There are lots of books in the Google Play Store! (Mine are there!) And I’ve heard the reading experience on Google Play books is great too.

Instafreebie

GO TO – http://www.instafreebie.com

One of my favorite new sites is Instafreebie, a platform for authors to give away books to readers, while also getting the chance to invite those readers to join our newsletters. Here’s my suggestion. Go to http://www.instafreebie.com and sign up on the homepage. You’ll get regular emails with books they are giving away for free. Many of them require that you sign up for the author’s newsletter as well to claim the copy. Do it. And don’t unsubscribe. You’ll get the free book AND, if you end up loving that author and their books, you’ll hear more about them in the future via their newsletter! This is a win-win situation. And the Instafreebie staff do an excellent job of curating books for their giveaways. There’s something here for everyone.

NoiseTrade

GO TO – http://www.noisetrade.com

Check it out at http://www.noisetrade.com and sign up as a fan. This site is new to me but it has a great premise. Free music AND books to users, AND if you love what you download, you can leave a tip for the artists. It’s not required, but hey, if you have a $1 or two, you can make a difference in that artist’s life by leaving a tip. I have REMOVED up there and I’ve gained a few newsletter subscribers this way too. New fans I can send deals to!

My Top 10 Japanese Snacks

SJ Pajonas My Top 10 Japanese Snacks

DaydreamerDetective_2_200x300Japan is a snacky society. With people on the run to and from work at all hours or working overtime, getting a quick bite or a snack on the go is essential to making it through the day. Mei from THE DAYDREAMER DETECTIVE and THE DAYDREAMER DETECTIVE BRAVES THE WINTER is a big fan of fast foods and snacks from the convenience store, and I’m sure, if she had any spare cash, she’d stock up on all of these items!

1) Onigiri – this is a rice ball, usually stuffed with something savory like salmon, roe, vegetables, or seaweed. Usually these come wrapped in nori seaweed, making them easy to grab and eat on the go. (I like them grilled too. Yummy!)

2) Pocky – these sweet breadsticks dipped in chocolate, or many other flavored coatings like strawberry or coconut, come in a handy box and can be munched on with a beer. There’s a drinking game that uses Pocky too, if you’re daring enough to try it! https://gaijintonic.com/2008/12/15/ja...

For my Pocky-loving friends

3) Senbei – round rice crackers in various sizes and flavors, these snacks are favorites of every generation. They also make great gifts if you’re bringing stuff home from Japan because they keep for a long time.

4) Dorayaki – dorayaki are my favorite!! You can buy them on the streets and in stores, in various shapes and sizes, but the most common form is like two Western style pancakes with sweet red bean paste sandwiched between them. Delicious!

Dorayaki 002

5) Dango – another popular street food, dango are glutinous rice ball dumplings similar to mochi, chewy and sweet, and served on a skewer, usually dipped in a sweet sauce. Sometimes they’re colored pink and green too, and you can find them in a variety of types including yaki dango (grilled) and anko dango (made with red bean paste).

6) Umaibo – this crunchy corn snack comes in a variety of flavors and makes another good on-the-go treat. It’s cylindrical and individually packaged so you can choose a few different varieties and never be without something tasty to eat. Popular flavors include teriyaki burger, takoyaki (fried octopus dumplings), and corn potage.

7) Anpan – have you ever heard of Anpanman? This is a Japanese anime character whose head is an anpan, a round sweet bread usually stuffed with red bean paste (but can be stuffed with sesame or chestnuts too). “Pan”, Japanese bread, is popular all on its own but anpan especially is great because it’s easy to hold and eat one-handed.

Bean-jam-bun,anpan,katori-city,japan

8) Calbee Jagabee – Calbee is a big snack company that makes all types of potato chips but the Jagabee version of potato sticks are my favorite. I love all the different flavors they come in and the packaging that keeps them from getting crushed in my bag.

9) Kakigori – this is more of a summer time snack and I hope to have some when I’m in Japan in August. Perfect for a hot day, kakigori is a MOUNTAIN of shaved ice, topped with sweetened syrup in a variety of flavors, pretty much anything you can think of! Lemon, strawberry, matcha, chocolate. Some places add in fruit as well. A true summer treat!

Kuro-kuma derived from Shiro-kuma

10) Assorted Jellies – the Japanese love jellies in a variety of flavors. These are a lot like Jello in the States but a little thicker and uses a gelatin derived from seaweed, agar-agar, to make them (they do not taste like seaweed). This is also a popular summer treat because the jellies are cool and refreshing. Flavors range from fruits to almond jelly and even coffee jelly!

Hopefully you’ve found some interesting snacks you’d like to try! I plan to indulge in them all in just another month!

How Not To Give A F*ck – Just Don’t Look!

SJ Pajonas How Not To Give A Fck

In this continuing series, I will show you how not to give a fuck about your book rejections, bad reviews, and disappointing sales. Please see the table of contents at the bottom of this post for more in this series.

So, now we’re getting down to the nitty gritty of this series. The really HARD stuff. All of my previous suggestions are kind-of metaphysical/physical, right? Concentrate on your body or your brain and you’ll be distracted into not giving a fuck. But here starts the practical suggestions on what you can do for your career if you’re giving too many fucks and can’t stop.

CIMG1081

This is the hardest one of all, so I’ll put it first. Just don’t look at your sales or reviews. Just don’t do it. I know it’s hard. I know. I really do. You spent all that time slaving over your book and you want to see how it’s doing. Because, somehow, we gain validation when other people love our work as much as we do. You yearn for someone to adore your main character as much as you do, flail over your world-building, or fall in love with the hero. And in creative endeavors, feeling the love and admiration from others feeds us and makes us work harder. I mean, who wants to write if no one is ever going to see it or love it as much as we do, right? (This is sarcasm, by the way. Writing for ourselves first is the most important thing).

But! But it’s not that easy. This is a case where you can be damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Those positive reviews can also tear us down if we suffer from Imposter Syndrome, that feeling that someone is going to figure out you’re faking it. You may look at the praise and think, “No. There’s no way this applies to me. I suck. How come they can’t see that?” I’m a phony, a total disaster! Ugh. I’ve been there. Those positive reviews are supposed to make us feel awesome! Sometimes, though, they don’t, in a destructive way.

This ice cream makes me happy. Reviews do not.

This ice cream makes me happy. Reviews do not.

Then there are the negative reviews that tear us or our work down. They’re harder to swallow than the positive ones, but we read them anyway. But I have news for you. Here’s the thing, random people on Goodreads, Amazon, or their blogs are going to have opinions of your work, and those opinions should have no bearing on how you write. I’ve heard lots of new authors say they read their negative reviews so they can “learn from them.” No. Don’t do this. Those random people don’t have the qualifications to give you real constructive feedback. They’re giving their opinion about how they felt about your work.

Even if they say there are typos or grammar issues, as long as your work is professionally edited, those reviews can be ignored. Why? Most people have NO CLUE how to use commas, transitive or intransitive verbs, quotes, or even adjectives properly. If you spend any amount of time online now, you’ll see this every day. The state of English grammar in this world is dismal. Unless your book is averaging 2 stars or lower, there is no need to panic.

I know this is hard. I really do. But the majority of professional authors don’t look at their sales daily or their reviews, and this is how they manage to continue writing and not fall into a pit of despair. Once you get into the pit, it’s VERY hard to get out. VERY. Don’t let yourself go there. Don’t look at your sales. Don’t look at your reviews. BE STRONG. You’ll thank me for it later.

How often do you look at your reviews and sales? Don’t you wish you could stop? Will you take the challenge and stop looking?

Book Chat #26

SPajonas_BookChat

It looks like I update the Book Chat about once per month, so let’s goooooooo!!

What I’m reading…

[image error]I am back in scifi territory on all fronts! I’m currently reading REMANENCE by Jennifer Foehner Wells which is the second book in the Confluence series. I’m enjoying this book just as much as the first book, FLUENCY. I really love scifi books that explore an alien race and/or planet as long as they keep it believable. Wells does this in spades. I also really love her writing style. It just works for me. I hope to finish this book up soon because I have a Japan-inspired alternate history book I want to read next that I’m also looking forward to.

What I read…

[image error][image error]I finished up WINTER by Marissa Meyer and felt bereft afterward. It was quite a last book in the series and did not disappoint. It was also VERY LONG. 97 chapters long. But that’s okay because the story was told and that’s how many chapters she needed to tell it. I’m just saying, don’t think you’ll be able to read it in a day. Lol.

What I’m listening to…

[image error]I’m back in the Expanse universe!! I’m currently finishing up listening to NEMESIS GAMES by James S. A. Corey and it is by far my favorite book in the series. I love love love that they split up everyone on the Rocinate and told all their stories. I loved hearing about Naomi, Alex, and Amos all off doing their own things, and all of their pasts. Amos continues to be my absolute favorite character and I love Naomi even more now. She is the very epitome of strong heroines. Like seriously. Do not mess with her. heart I’ll probably finish this one tonight because I’m already in the epilogue. And I loved that the original narrator was back. One note, I’m not surprised to find this book got lower ratings on Amazon. For some reason, the hard core scifi readers are mostly male that want all the scifi to be without human feelings or emotions. I am so not that kind of reader, so this book turned out to be my favorite of the series. Just goes to show you that reviews are not all they’re cracked up to be.

What I listened to…

[image error]Before NEMESIS GAMES, I tried to listen to THE ATLANTIS GENE by A. G. Riddle. Though the writing was very good and I liked the narrator, I just was not into the storyline. The series seems to be all about the plot and not about the characters. The story jumped from one viewpoint to another, sometimes in the same chapter and characters would die or be tortured before I got to know them. Nope. Can’t do it. I turned it off and moved on.

[image error]Next up was THE VITAL ABYSS by James S. A. Corey, a companion novel to the Expanse series, which I really enjoyed. It was about the scientists who worked on the protomolecule and what happened to them after they were arrested. I’m pretty sure it will bring some insight into later books in the series, and now I have downloaded other companion novellas from the series and am eagerly looking forward to listening to them too.

And that’s it for now! As you can see, I am thoroughly entrenched in some scifi right now, which is a happy place for me to be, especially as I’m writing mystery.

Sunday Update – July 17, 2016

2016-07-15_203441335_8C362_iOS

What. A. Week. This week went by with a fury unmatched to anything in a while. On Monday, I went for a walk in the park and ran into some Pokemon Go hunters on the way home. Tuesday was my youngest’s birthday. My husband worked from home for the day while I did my usual routine. I dropped the oldest and the birthday girl at camp, went to the gym, picked up groceries, took the kids to the pool in the afternoon, then we all went out to dinner to celebrate the youngest’s birthday. She got some great presents and had a fabulous day.

The rest of the week is kind of a blur. I started writing the next Daydreamer book! Yay! I have it plotted out to the beginning of the second act and I’m slowly feeling my way to that point. After that, I hope to just be writing writing writing. Every single day this past week, Monday through Friday, I exercised or walked. I did a lot of walking on the treadmill and dictating, which has been great to get back to. On Wednesday, I left the house for a while to let the cabinet refurnisher fix all the nicks and scratches on the cabinets in the kitchen from when they were installed. Thursday and Friday were both filled with errands, walking and writing.

Yesterday, we had my youngest’s birthday party at our town pool. I’m always really nervous to throw parties. I obsess over the details and get anxious if things don’t go as planned. I was a mess planning my own wedding! That was 12 years ago and I still remember the anxiety attacks I had and how sick I was the night before. I’d much rather have other people do that for me. Now I know, Lol. Even a little birthday party for 6 year olds is hard for me!

What else happened this week?

2016-07-10_010059644_7FBAA_iOS

I’ve been watching the bears on the Explore.org YouTube streaming channel. This webcam is in Katmai National Park in Alaska. It’s pointed at the falls and you can watch the bears fish for salmon that’s swimming upstream. It’s really quite fascinating! And Alaska has so much daylight this time of year that you can watch all day and into the night.

2016-07-10_184754721_56B47_iOS

I picked up a few books at the town library’s annual pool sale last weekend. I didn’t have that Marian Keyes book!

I worked my last CSA shift this week and there were SO MANY VEGGIES to take home!

I really enjoyed my vegan burger I had while out on Wednesday. Delicious!

2016-07-16_183650693_1E3A0_iOS

And here’s yesterday’s birthday cake for my daughter. She loves The Muppets!

I realized yesterday that I meant to post a Book Chat to the blog last week but it didn’t happen, so I’ll do that this week. I’m heading into the lighter part of the month for blog content, which is good because I plan to be writing, so I’ll only be around a few days per week through the beginning of August. I do plan to repost my guest posts from THE DAYDREAMER DETECTIVE BRAVES THE WINTER blog tour, as well.

Have a great week everyone!

In this continuing series, I will show you how not to give a fuck about your book rejections, bad reviews, and disappointing sales. Please see the table of contents at the bottom of this post for more in this series.

We’ve gone through a lot of steps to get here. You’ve slaved away at exercising and meditated. You’ve been working on your hobbies and thinking all types of positive thoughts. Now it’s time to really do something for yourself. If you sink all of your creative juices into your writing, and you transition your writing from a hobby to a job, you may find that, over time, your creativity will hit lows you’ve never seen before.

You've been coloring or destressing, but you don't want to get back to writing.

When your creativity is low, you’ll find your mind wandering and your attention drawn to distractions like checking your sales dashboard and review stats. No! Don’t dooooooooooo it!!! Don’t click on those bookmarks! You’re already in a vulnerable state, maybe stuck in a fit of writer’s block or not sure where to go on your outline, and looking at your zero sales and terrible reviews is only going to make things worse. Trust me.

I have an theory on this loss of creativity and it’s not mine alone. I know I’ve heard it from countless other authors so I can’t take the credit. Still, if you haven’t heard of this before you should know about the Well of Creativity.

well

The well of creativity is like a water well, a big hole in the ground with water in it. You dip your bucket in and pull up a pail full of water (creativity) and use it. But if you draw from the well too frequently, it may run dry, and you either need to wait an undetermined amount of time for it to fill up again or you need to refill it yourself. Make sense?

I do a combination of both of these techniques. I try to see a project to completion, and then take some time off to refill the well before starting something new.

Refilling the well can include any of the activities I’ve already mentioned like meditation, exercise, or your hobby, but I feel it really works by taking the time to ingest creativity from other people as well. This “refilling the well” time is when I binge-watch an entire show on Netflix, read an entire series of books, go see a movie, or attend a concert. I enjoy the fruits of some other person’s creativity in the hopes their creativity will refill my well, give me a boost, so to speak.

Refilling the well will help get your own creative juices flowing. You may hear a song lyric that inspires a whole novel or read a high fantasy novel that convinces you to switch from writing non-fiction to fiction.

By refilling the well, you keep the hope alive, beating, ticking away in your chest. You forget about things like sales or rejections, and concentrate on creating new and amazing places for your brain to live.

Refilling the well = your continued success as a creative person.
