Review: Derek Webb’s I Was Wrong, I’m Sorry, & I Love You

If you plan on purchasing I Was Wrong, I’m Sorry, & I Love You, consider supporting Grace for Sinners by purchasing from Amazon.
My first exposure to Derek was through Caedmon’s Call’s 40 Acres . I’ve followed his career since and have enjoyed many of his albums. One of the things I appreciate about Derek is the seriousness with which he undertakes his craft and the honesty in each song. He’s a Christian that makes good music with Christian themes, but his albums are always human. They aren...

Review: Brennan Manning’s The Ragamuffin Gospel

If you plan on purchasing Ragamuffin Gospel, consider supporting Grace for Sinners by purchasing from Amazon.
8 out of 10 Stars
Author: Brennan Manning
Publisher: Multnomah
Reading: Leisure

Brennan Manning is a skilled writer (I loved his telling of “a routine situation that every Catholic of my generation had to deal with” KL 480-492 of 3173) whose pen drips with a passion for sharing the love of God with people. His central message is God loves ragamuffins (sinners, downtrodden, prostitutes, et...

Christianese Memes

This week has been crazy with A Household Gospel releasing and my wife and I organizing for a massive Everything Must Go Yardsale this coming weekend. I wanted to share something light with you today. Monday I tweeted out some memes inspired by Relevant’s “20 Christianese Phrases We Really Need to Stop Saying.” They went over well. These are all meant in good fun. I’ve said some of them. Hopefully, they’ll get you thinking about what you say and how it sounds to others outside of the church.

What Are People Saying about A Household Gospel?

You may have heard already, but my book A Household Gospel released in digital format late Monday night. You can purchase it from Amazon or, if you prefer a different digital format (iBooks or PDF), you can purchase directly from Grace for Sinners. Some of you might need a little convincing that this book is worth reading. I had a few people who read it pre-release and offered to write recommendations. These range from editors at larger websites to your average Joe. I hope these help you get...

Into the Wild: A Household Gospel

Into the Wild
The time has drawn near. A Household Gospel will be released into the wild today. It’s a weight lifted and it also makes me anxious. I’ve learned a lot through this process and have made mistakes and have had people catch my mistakes (thanks Chad!). I have made an inordinate amount of minor tweaks to the book in the last two weeks (thanks Nick!). I joked with him that I was honoring Steve Jobs’s famous “One last thing...”

I hope this serves families in the church well. Without th...

Review: John D. Currid’s Against the Gods

If you plan on purchasing Against the Gods, consider supporting Grace for Sinners by purchasing from Amazon.
9 out of 10 Stars
Author: John D. Currid
Publisher: Crossway
Reading Level: Easy

I thoroughly enjoyed Against the Gods. It really hit the sweet spot for me with just the right mixture of easy to read, practical theology and scholarly background on the culture in the ancient Near East (ANE). Reading Against the Gods will aid your Scripture reading in the Old Testament immediately. John will...

Review: Michael Kelley’s Boring

If you plan on purchasing Boring, consider supporting Grace for Sinners by purchasing from Amazon.
7 out of 10 Stars
Author: Michael Kelley
Publisher: B&H
Reading Level: Leisure

In Boring, Michael Kelley teaches us that God is found in life’s ordinary tasks. We don’t have to travel to the heart of Africa or build an orphanage to have purpose or value. Michael says,
The truth is that we will all spend 90 percent of our time here on earth just doing life. Just being ordinary. If this were a self-...

CBMW Guest Post: Biblical Manhood in the Marketplace: Working and the Image of God

The team at CBMW’s Men Blog was gracious enough to write the first piece in their Biblical Manhood in the Marketplace series. Here’s an amuse-bouche. Follow the links at the end to read the rest of the article.

At 5:20 a.m., I’m always tired. I envy coffee drinkers. The coffee commercials look so pleasant and make it seem so delicious. But I can’t get past the bitterness. I scrounge a quick bite to eat. I zombie...
