A Household Gospel #AddAWordRuinaChristianBook

So it started a few days back with a twitter trend #AddaWordRuinaMovie and transformed shortly into #AddaWordRuinaChristianBook. I realized that was a great opportunity to have some fun with my own book A Household Gospel . I ended up giving away some paperbacks and a dozen or so digital copies to those who ruined my book title. Here were the ingenious title ruiners.

I Feel Change Comin’ On

Two thousand and thirteen has been an amazing year. My wife and I are having our third daughter Adele Lila Kay. She’ll be here in December and I’m sure she will change our family dynamic--something we experienced when our second child Maddy arrived. That’s not a bad thing. It’s been a wonderful change with Maddy. I’m excited to see what Adele will add to our family.

I also published my first book A Household Gospel . I learned a lot about the publishing process. I was supremely naive before sta...

New Covenant Polemics: Jesus Commands the Storm

I recently reviewed Dr. John D. Currid’s Against the Gods . He argues convincingly that the Old Testament parallels to ancient Near Eastern literature should be understood as polemic. “Polemic theology is the use by biblical writers of the thought forms and stories that were common in ancient Near Eastern culture, while filling them with radically new meaning . . . . Polemic theology is monotheistic to the very core” (Against the Gods 25). From there I started asking, “In what ways is Jesus mi...

Review: Edmund Clowney’s The Unfolding Mystery

If you plan on purchasing The Unfolding Mystery, consider supporting Grace for Sinners by purchasing from Amazon.
10 out of 10 Stars
Author: Edmund Clowney
Publisher: P&R Publishing
Reading Level: Easy

Dr. Edmund Clowney’s The Unfolding Mystery is a classic text originally published in 1989. It’s only now reaching its second edition which is a shame. Biblical theology is coming into its own on a popular and scholarly level (rightly so) and Clowney well deserves to be heard and read widely. May...

The New Exodus: Rehearsing the Gospel Story in the New Covenant

I’ve talked a great deal about gospeling in our homes over the last year. It’s been a topic on my mind because I wrote a book on that topic, but I wanted to offer a broader application and some theological backdrop for the why and how of rehearsing the gospel story in the new covenant.

The Old Testament Exodus

As Genesis comes to a close, Joseph finds himself ruling Egypt as second in command. His brothers come down to Egypt seeking food. Joseph doesn’t reveal his identity right away, not until...

Four Ways Churches Can Equip Families to Rehearse the Gospel

All this hub bub about rehearsing the gospel story in your home, but I haven’t asked one question, “How can churches equip families to do this?” Yes, families must make much of God. Yes, we are all responsible for our families. Yet, when we read through Scripture, when we see God’s people acting faithfully, it almost always starts with the leadership of the church. God seems to normally use strong leadership to strengthen families and individuals.

This is true primarily because we are a body....

Edmund Clowney: God’s Story Unfolds in Christ

“Anyone who has had Bible stories read to him as a child knows that there are great stories in the Bible. But it is possible to know Bible stories, yet miss the Bible story. The Bible is much more than William How stated: “a golden casket where gems of truth are stored.” It is more than a bewildering collection of oracles, proverbs, poems, architectural directions, annals, and prophecies. The Bible has a story line. It traces an unfolding drama. The story follows the history of Israel, but it...

It began with reading Contours of Pauline Theology then fleshed itself out in some of what I wrote here and elsewhere and finally in A Household Gospel .
