Author Copies – Woohoo!

So I got home from New York to find these waiting for me: And then my Public Lending Right payment came. Which means good news all around. Both books are for ages 8-12, and are on sale now through your favourite online or brick and mortar retailer. Buy indie if you can. How was your week?

New York Shenanigans

I’m flying to New York this morning for the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators conference. Blog will be quiet until I’m home and caught up on sleep, but check Facebook and Twitter. I’m hoping to have time to post a few updates. Have fun without me!

Fingerprints Still Solve More Crimes Than DNA

It’s true – DNA fingerprinting is an incredibly powerful tool for forensics, in part because DNA can tell us: if a particular person was at a crime scene (TV CSIs call this “getting a match”) the identity of a person whose remains can no longer be fingerprinted whether a suspect was a man or a woman whether the criminal was even human (don’t laugh – sometimes the bad guy is a literal bear!) whether or not people involved in an investigation are related (very handy in kidnapping cases) Traditional fingerprints can pretty much only do the first one. BUT. Usable fingerprints are […]

Geeks, Nerds, and The Big Bang Theory

I was procrastinating on the internets this morning, as one does, and I came across this handy chart for determining whether you are a geek or a nerd: As it turns out, I am nerdy with a sprinkle of geek for seasoning. I am OK with this. Thanks to the pioneering efforts of The Big Bang Theory, it is cooler to be a nerd or geek now than at any previous time in my life to date. I was so profoundly uncool as a kid, most of the cool kids didn’t even bother to bully me. I was such an easy […]

So Apparently I Can’t Write Intelligently About Science at 5PM

Because it’s been a long day already and I’ve been staring blankly at the screen for ten minutes, thinking about naps instead of typing. But all is not lost, because I have science writing friends. I highly recommend Sci/Why, a blog written entirely by Canadian children’s science authors. Want more? Check out Science Borealis, which is also full of Canadian-y goodness. Apparently I can’t grammar after 5 either. Let’s try this again on Thursday. Until then, happy Monday, my friends.

Why I Married Tech Support

Me: So tomorrow’s Flights of Fantasy Saturday on my blog. What should I write about? Tech Support: (immediately) Bone dragons. Me: ….bone dragons? Tech Support: Yeah. Like how do they fly? Doesn’t the wind go through their wings? And how do the bones stay together, anyway? Me: I’m guessing magic. Tech Support: Fair enough. So I guess the real question, then, is what happens when they eat you. Me: ….when they…. Tech Support: Yeah. Wouldn’t you fall right out? Me: *laughs helplessly* Stuff like this is why I married him. Happy Saturday, everyone!

What’s Your Boy Band?

I have a theory that I can pinpoint the decade of your teen years by the boy band whose lyrics you still remember. 1960s – The Monkees 1970s – The Jackson 5 1980s – New Kids on the Block (which I never actually listened to, being the weird kid who liked the Bee Gees, but whom certain other unnamed members of my family had posters of) And then came the 90s with dueling boy bands N’SYNC and Backstreet Boys. Whose albums my MOTHER asked me to buy for her one Christmas. I vividly remember standing in A&B Sound, an actual CD […]

Book Birthdays (And Mine, Too!)

It’s my birthday this week, and what better way to celebrate than with books? That I wrote. Heeheehee! But wait, there’s more!     And, as the frosting on the awesome cake…   My first article for National Geographic (Extreme Explorer) is now out! Like dolphins? Read the article in its entirety here. My dad, who shares my birthday, got an even better gift this year, though. After complications from a hip replacement and seven months in a wheelchair, he got the green light to start walking again. Which, quite frankly, is the best gift I could have gotten, too. Want to […]

Ten Reasons WILLOW is Still One of the Best Fantasy Movies of All Time

Tech Support and I watched Willow again the other night, and just like when I watched it (over and over) as a kid, it made me deliriously happy. It’s the story of an unlikely hero who has to save a baby from the evil queen that wants to kill her, and if you’ve never seen it, here are ten reasons you should. The Special Effects Yes, OK. By today’s standards, the effects are simplistic, in some places even comical (especially on the Blu-Ray). But for 1988? That stuff was AWESOME. The Setting Long before Peter Jackson turned New Zealand into Middle Earth, Ron […]
