10 Reasons Arctic Foxes Are the Coolest

If you’ve been here before, you probably know I love domesticated foxes (enough to write a book about them), but arctic foxes will always have a special place in my heart. One reason is that I spent 6 years studying them (and wolves) for my PhD. The other reason is that arctic foxes are COOL. Here’s why.     1) Look at that little face! Notice how the nose and ears are stubby compared to other foxes. Those are adaptations that help keep the heat in during a frigid arctic winter. 2) Arctic foxes also have fur on their toe […]

How The Princess Bride Landed Me a Husband

Tech Support and I celebrated our 8th wedding anniversary last week, which is actually a bigger accomplishment than it sounds like because we dated for 13 years before tying the knot. We wanted to be really, really sure.

More Live Action from Disney

Next on Disney’s list of “animated-classics-remade-as-live-action” is Beauty and the Beast: What do you think about this phenomenon? Are you excited about beloved stories getting new life, or do you see this as yet more evidence that there are “no new ideas” in Hollywood? Is this an innovation or a crash cash grab?

Celebrating Children’s Literacy Book Fair – This Saturday

If you’re in Nova Scotia, come on out. It’s a great opportunity to meet local authors, chat kid lit, and pick up a signed book. Free and open to the public – hope to see you there!

The Case of the Totally False Fingerprinting Propaganda

Deadlines are swarming like a school of sharks in search of blood, so I hope you’ll forgive me for recycling some blog content. I wrote this a year ago to celebrate the release of my second kid’s book on forensic science. By this time next year, my third and fourth books on forensics will have hit the shelves. In the meantime, enjoy! The Industrial Revolution of the 19th century was responsible for more than just technological breakthroughs and the novels of Charles Dickens. It also caused a major spike in crime rates, as people moved from the countryside into the cities looking […]

Crazy Awesome (Busy) Week…

Because I spent two days doing this with the awesome kids of Pine Ridge Middle School. We had a lot of fun talking about the books that have an impact on us, then practiced techniques for having that kind of impact on our reader. The kids were bright and engaged and really bought in. They also produced some very effective writing. Speaking of which, I stumbled on these two gems while researching for a new book this week: Dead competitors sell no beer. That’s ballistics expert Calvin Goddard on the 1929 St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. Only my profound respect for the […]

Flying Sea Flap Flaps

I’m not sure who coined the term “sea flap flap” for sting ray, but it’s hilarious and it makes me happy. And since I am under a deadline crunch and don’t have time to write a lengthy post this weekend, let’s go with a fantastical video of sting rays, you guessed it, flying! Enjoy!

Fox Talk Joins Fox Appeal!

I am so pleased to announce that my book Fox Talk is now available to order through Fox Appeal! Fox Appeal is a clothing line inspired by Siberian domesticated foxes Boris and Sophia, so a partnership was a natural fit. This awesome T shirt they make also fits pretty well, although that may not be obvious in the photo due to my rudimentary selfie skills. Anyway, Boris and Sophia, known as the Siberian Cupcakes, are working as foxy ambassadors in outreach and education programs surrounding domesticated foxes in the USA. Since I harbour a not-so-secret dream of having a domestic fox of my […]

The Maiden Voyage of the HMS Icebear

So it turns out Tech Support was right. A canoe CAN be used as an icebreaker. Provided the ice is only about 1 cm thick, and you’re willing to back up repeatedly in order to generate fresh momentum. The ducks were VERY confused. It was a total blast, and I’m very glad we stopped being grown up and practical long enough to actually give it a try! What did you do Easter weekend?

Throwback Thursday – Jesus Christ Superstar

Confession – when I was a senior in high school, I was totally obsessed with Jesus Christ Superstar. Not the completely dreadful movie version, which I suspect was filmed under the influence of a LOT of mind-altering substances of dubious legality. The Broadway version, which inexplicably underwent a sort of revival that year. I saw it twice in the space of 12 months. The first time (my introduction to the musical) was in the summer of 1994, with my mom and Grandma at Edmonton’s dinner theatre, which I’m pretty sure was still called Stage West back then. Although Grandma is a pretty devout […]
