A MOMENT TO SHARE with Eva Natsumi

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Eva Natsumi /Mary Catherine/ author of Drowing Ophelia, Bloody Valentine, Rue Bourbon Supernatirals, Beast, The Web and more. She doesn’t much care for genres. She writes what she wants to write. Her books are a little humorous, a lot dark, and mostly about twisted people.

UnknownHi Eva, thank you for agreeing to this interview.

• Tell me a little about yourself and your background? What were you like at school? Were you good at English? What are your ambitions for your writing career? Which writers inspire you? Or something that you feel you need to share?

Eva is my nom de plume. My real name is Mary Catherine, but everything about Eva is true, I.E. We were both diagnosed with debilitating illness(es). So high school was a real drag. I didn’t really go to school. I spent all of sophomore year at home, too sick to go, and the rest of the years I attended randomly. It was lonely. Writing makes me feel like I’m not alone. When I put pen to paper (or pixel to paper) suddenly someone else shares my problems. Suddenly there’s another person with my sense of humor. It’s the same rush I get when reading, only a billion times more. More than one writer has said they feel sick if they go a day without writing, and it’s true. Writing grounds me. I get too depressed and too lonely without my characters.

Oh and most teachers and I didn’t get along. Teachers either hated me or didn’t notice me. I really didn’t like school…. Was I good at English? I was alright. I got A’s and sometimes B’s. The thing about English is that most of the time the teacher wants you to follow the rules. I don’t follow the rules. I break them. You see that in my writing. We read these great, groundbreaking writers and essayists and then they want us to write these boring, structured essays. I did have one calculus teacher that looked like Viggo Mortenson, so even though I sucked at Calculus, that was a fun class. Wink Wink.

• What was your life like before becoming an author?

It was… antsy. I just want my stuff to be read, ya know?

• Which comes first? The character’s story or the idea for the novel?eroticmirror

It depends. I’ve been working on a novel for seven years now and the character came first with that. I love her. But a lot of the times the story comes first too. With Rue Bourbon Supernaturals and Beast the story came first. With Drowning Ophelia it was a mixture. With Miss Lonelyhearts it came to me in a dream. A fucking terrible nightmare, more like.

• When did you decide to become a writer?

I remember it like it was yesterday… Haha, but seriously I do. I had always had trouble making up my mind with what I wanted to be. One week it was marine biologist, the next actor, then fire fighter, etc etc. Then one week in drama class we were given an assignment to write our character’s back story and act it out. I had SO much fun writing my character and it hit me. I don’t want to be an actor, or a firefighter, or a marine biologist. I want to be a writer. I want to write those people’s stories, not live them. Living them gets boring, but writing them? I can write whatever I want! I had been writing since I was little as a hobby, but it never hit me to pursue it. That day was a friggin’ epiphany and I’ve never regretted it.

• Why do you write?

For many reasons. I said before I don’t want to feel lonely. It really helps when I’m struggling with something to write it down. It makes me feel like someone else has this problem too. I also write because I have this internal restlessness. One day I want to be a vampire and the next I want to be a heroine in some new adult comedy. Writing lets me live all the lives I want to.

Also, and this is a big also, I want to change someone. Every time I read something I’m changed a little bit. Whether I empathize with someone more or learn more about something, I’m changed. If I change just one person for the better with my writing then it’s done. I did my job.

• So, what have you written?

drowning ophelia mergeDrowning Ophelia

Drowing Ophelia (Drowning Ophelia, #1)

Arise (Drowning Ophelia, #2)

This is one of the darker series; it’s really not for people who like happy endings.

Bloody Valentine – Miss Lonelyhearts (Bloody Valentine, #1)

Sister Havoc (Bloody Valentine) Is the second book that I’m writing. I’m so damn excited for this too. The title is one of my favorites.

DCF 1.0Rue Bourbon Supernaturals

Scarlette (Rue Bourbon Supernaturals, #1)

Maya (Rue Bourbon Supernaturals, #2)

Jessica (Rue Bourbon Supernaturals, #3)

This is pure paranormal and so much fun. This is the third book and I’m writing this one as well. It’s a little taboo with the age of consent blurred.

Beast

This is my taboo erotica.

The Web (The Web, #1)

I just finished the rewrite for this and I’ll release it in November. It’s much better than before.

I’m also working on a new novel.

• Give me an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?

Instead of doing any one character, I’ll talk about them all. All of my characters are a bit twisty. They’re always struggling with something internally. Take, for example, Ophelia from Drowning Ophelia. She struggles with severe depression and has to deal with that, on top of being stranded in a manor with some mysterious guy. Greta from Miss Lonelyhearts has debilitating anxiety and is thrust in to the apocalypse, enough said. I like my characters to be relateable, and I don’t think it’s relateable if the only thing a character has to deal with is relationship problems.

• How do you market your book?

misslonelyheartscover

My marketing is so sporadic. I try not to bombard people with spam and ads. The way I want to market my books is through word of mouth and it being read, so I focus on giveaways and reviews. Every now and then I’ll place an ad (when I’m feelin’ antsy).

• Do you have any advice for other authors on how to market their books?

A book is meant to be read, so do whatever it takes to get it read. I like giving mine away.

• What do you do to get book reviews?

I giveaway my book in exchange for an honest review.

• What advice do you have for someone who would like to become a published writer?

DCF 1.0Make sure you edit your book thoroughly. If you suck at editing, hire an editor. I’ve hired a couple editors who (in my opinion) didn’t do that great of a job. I ended up editing my own. It isn’t just about looking over your work once. You need to read it a “bajillion” times in a couple of months to make sure it’s great. People don’t want to read crap.

Make sure you have a great cover. There are a bunch of great, online resources. Like http://www.goonwrite.com/

I even have shop where I sell pre made covers –  http://thebookcoverdesigner.com/designers/eva-natsumis-custom-covers/.

A MOMENT TO SHARE with Alison Strachan

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Alison Strachan author of the coming soon fantasy novel with the tentative title The Divided. Alison is a fantasy writer who believes in the power of story-telling. She is passionate about the environment and speaking up against abuse of animals. Her novel in progress explores these themes and those of identity and belonging in a world where men and women live separately. She invites you to read the prequel to her novel and excerpts on her blog.

Alison Strachan

Hi Alison, thank you for agreeing to this interview.

Tell me a little about yourself and your background? What were you like at school? Were you good at English? What are your ambitions for your writing career? Which writers inspire you? or something that you feel you need to share?

As a whole I am a tree-climbing, cat-loving woman with a wonderful family, a roof over my head, clothes on my back and a computer to write on. What more could a girl want? :-) Seriously though I am a very lucky wife and mother to two young girls who has an incredibly supportive family. These are not all things that everyone can say they have in life.

Like most writers though, I struggle a lot trying to find the balance between my family and work responsibilities, my children and my reading and writing. I believe that if you really want something you make time for it. You do what you can to make it happen because if you don’t do that – deep down you don’t really want it.

As far as my writing goes I guess I’m still a newbie. I’ve been writing for myself for a very long time. As a kid I was making my own picture books, writing and illustrating them myself and even sought feedback for one. How brave! Until recently, when I gathered a few of my online peeps to join a critique group, not very many people had seen my work.

What was your life like before becoming an author?

I probably watched more television and had more spare time!

Which comes first? The character’s story or the idea for the novel?

I guess that depends largely on the project. I began my WIP because I wanted to explore a world where men and women lived separately. The characters that spawned from there were a product of brainstorming those ideas.

When did you decide to become a writer?

Screen Shot 2013-10-27 at 3.50.04 PM

Alison’s Blog

I think I was about 18 when I answered an ad in one of the major newpapers here calling for ‘amateur writers’. At the time I thought that would be cool, and it turned out to be the chance of a life-time. I was selected to join a collaboration of fantasy writers to write a series of novels. I met some wonderful writers and have forged lifelong friendships but sadly that collaboration fell apart when the director had to take leave to look after her terminally ill mother. Being accepted into that group though was a defining moment for me and it was then that I knew I had to pursue my dream.

After fits and starts with a publishing business after that, I decided to begin taking my writing career seriously again at the beginning of 2012 and I began blogging and writing on a more regular basis. I began the Writing My Truth blog to keep me accountable to my writing. It’s a place where I share my work, my experiences, discuss the writing industry and craft with fellow writers and readers.

Why do you write?

I believe that telling and retelling stories is one of the most important things we can do as humans. A great story can bridge divides of race, age and gender. Not only that, it can open people’s eyes to new cultures and enlighten them to different ways of thinking and bring comfort, hope, inspire empathy and so much more.

Being a great story-teller is something I aspire to be. I don’t aspire to be a writer, I know I am already one of those. But creating stories that really move people, that is something I want to be remembered for and it is the reason I write.

So, what have you written?

I am writing my first fantasy novel which explores themes of identity and belonging in a world where men and women live separately as well as the affect we have on our environment. The story will (hopefully) make you think about the way we view our world, and our gender as a product of the society we are raised in.

I’ve also written a children’s series aimed at early school age kids. These stories are about a young girl called Sarah who likes to tell Tall Tales and the sticky situations she lands herself in as a result. I have had one or two short stories published under my maiden name some years ago in a couple e-zines, but those publications no longer exist.

Where people can buy or see them?

Alison’s Facebook page

You can read the prequel to my novel and excerpts on my blog and on my facebook page. I hope to be able to offer an anthology of urban fantasy tales to readers as a free ebook for subscribing soon.

Give me an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?

Breanna Essran is a free-spirited and passionate young woman who feels disconnected from her Sisters because of her upbringing. She has inherited her mother’s Neci Gift (with fire) and her control over this is tenuous at best which means it often gets her into trouble.

What sparked the idea for your book?

Screen Shot 2013-10-27 at 3.33.09 PM

Alison’s Pinterest page

With the tentative title The Divided, my current WIP was sparked by an idea and then asking what if? What if men and women lived separately? What if it wasn’t always like that? What would make them decide to step apart from their brothers, their husbands, their lovers, their sons and their sisters, their wives, their mothers and daughters? What would that do to society?

The children’s book I’m working on was sparked by a character that my audience can hopefully relate to, and the urban fantasy anthology has so far been sparked by a mixture of character and setting.

How do you market your book?

As yet I don’t have a book to market so I am still busy soaking up all the info I can on this. I plan on experimenting with different techniques like posting work on Wattpad, using Pinterest to generate interest in my characters and my world, as well as programs like Amazon’s KDP Select. That’s the great thing about being a self-published author – you have all the control!

Do you have any advice for other authors on how to market their books?

Having had no experience in this yet I would just say – be open and honest and giving in your approach to promoting yourself and promoting others.

What do you do to get book reviews?

I would consider offering a limited amount of free copies of my book to readers in exchange for reviews. I have been approached to do this before and I was happy to do so. I am unsure as to what else I would do at this point – suggestions welcome!

What advice do you have for someone who would like to become a published writer?

If you are really serious about writing then you have to make time, you have to write everyday and finish what you start. You also need to join a book club/critique group or find one or two people who are willing to give you some honest feedback of your work.

Is there anything else you would like to add that I haven’t included?

Thank you so very much Meggie for inviting me over to answer these questions!

A MOMENT TO SHARE with Dianne Harman

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Dianne Harman author of Blue Coyote Motel, Tea Party Teddy and Coyote in Provence. Dianne draws her stories and characters from a diverse business and personal background. She owned a national antique and art appraisal business for many years, leaving that industry and opening two yoga centers where she taught yoga and certified instructors. Dianne has traveled extensively throughout the world, most recently dividing her time between Huntington Beach and Sacramento, California, where her husband is a Senator. A gourmet cook, she has entertained Governors, Congressmen and numerous other political figures in her homes.

44251a4ddc6375441369759174Hi Dianne, thank you for agreeing to this interview.

Tell us a little about yourself and your background? What were you like at school? Were you good at English?  What are your ambitions for your writing career? Which writers inspire you?

I was an English Major in college and yes, I was good at English. Those classes were effortless, but like so many, I never felt I had fulfilled the criteria for being an author, such as attending special schools for writing, support groups, etc. I read Stephen King’s book “On Writing” a little over two years ago and loved his kind of “Do It Now” philosophy. And so I did.

What was your life like before becoming an author?

Eclectic. A mother, a wife. I owned a national antique and art appraisal business for 20 years and then bought two yoga studios. I taught yoga internationally and certified teachers. My husband became a politician and eventually a California Senator. I spent 12 years dividing my time between Sacramento, California and Huntington Beach, California.

When did you decide to become a writer?

When my husband and I stayed at a motel in Palm Springs, California, and attended a wedding. Our son was the best man. It was October and 106 degrees out. The air conditioner was silent and welcome. I’ll never know why, but I turned to my husband and said, “What if someone put a ‘feel-good’ drug in the air-conditioner and everyone felt good all the time?” He looked at me and said, “There’s your book.” And so Blue Coyote Motel was birthed that afternoon on my iPad. It later went on to become a quarterfinalist in the ABNA contest and a Book of the Month, both on e-thriller and Goodreads Psychological Thrillers. Who knew???

Which comes first? The character’s story or the idea for the novel?Coyote in Provence - ebook-sm (1) - Copy

Probably an overall idea for the novel. I develop a character, and quite frankly, the characters begin to tell me where the story is going.

Why do you write? What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

People have always told me their stories. I guess I’m easy to talk to. The best advice to an aspiring writer – just start writing.. With each book, article, or short story, you’ll improve. And don’t let age stop you. I wrote Blue Coyote Motel when I was in my late 60’s.

So, what have you written? /*Include books, novellas, short stories, poems, blogs, awards or anything of interest. /

I presently have three published books: Blue Coyote Motel, the sequel to it – Coyote in Provence and Tea Party Teddy, a satiric novel about California politics.

Where people can buy or see them? /* include American, European and any other relevant links. Free, free promotions or prices can be included/

My books are all available on Amazon. Here’s my main page: http://ow.ly/q90K0

Give me an insight into your main character from your last novel /first novel/. What does he/she do that is so special?

When I gave Blue Coyote Motel to several people for beta reading, each one asked what was going to happen to Maria? I realized I’d written a character that people had become interested in. I think what makes her special is that she overcomes adversity. Kind of there’s hope for all of us, no matter what.

What sparked the idea for your book/s?

0[1]

The air conditioner in Palm Springs was the genesis for Blue Coyote Motel and then went on to Coyote in Provence. Tea Party Teddy has an interesting background. I had a front row center seat in the California political arena. One night at a reception, I was seated next to the most bigoted, biased, politician I’d ever met. The next night, by coincidence, I was seated next to him at a dinner. I couldn’t stop thinking about him. I wondered if he was married, what his family life was like, and what the future held for him. The novel came out of that experience.

Are there any character traits in your book that are based on someone you know? /*Even if the whole character isn’t based on them?

Teddy was born because of the politician I wrote above, but he became a composite of politicians. As for the other two books, not actually based on them, but I don’t think a writer can completely separate themselves from their experiences. For instance, in Blue Coyote Motel I write about Jill trekking in Nepal to go to the Mani Rimdu Festival in the Himalayas. I did that. In Teddy, there’s a scene where a woman comes up the head table at a Boys and Girls Club dinner and comments on the fact that Nina is wearing the same outfit she wore a year ago. I had that happen.

Do you read much and if so who are your favorite authors?

I read 4 – 5 books a week and as for favorite authors, it changes with whatever I’m reading. If I take the time to go beyond 20 pages, I like the book.

Where is your favorite place to read and write?

I like to read on the couch in the family room or in bed in the evening. I write in my office.

How do you market your book/s?

I made the decision to do digital marketing almost exclusively. I’ve spoken to several book clubs, but at this stage of my life I have no desire to go from bookstore to bookstore hoping someone will take a couple of books on consignment and at this age, I probably don’t have years and years to experience rejection letters and then finally find some publisher who will take me on. I decided to self-publish and have never regretted it.

Do you have any advice for other authors on how to market their books?

Spend at least as much time marketing your books as you do writing them, if not more.

What do you do to get book reviews?

For Blue Coyote and Teddy, I relied on friends, and then the more people who read the books, the more the reviews came in. For Coyote in Provence, I decided to frontload it by having an event on Goodreads, an Advance Review Copy event. I sent the people who indicated an interest, the book in whatever format they preferred, and they agreed to write reviews for me on Amazon and Goodreads. The book has only been out a couple of weeks and it’s already gotten a number of reviews.

What advice do you have for someone who would like to become a published writer?214519ea0681f65d1369350248

Write the best book you can write. Set aside a budget for someone to do the cover and get a copy editor. Both of these are relatively inexpensive and I think, critical, to publishing a book that you’ll be proud of. A lot of people try to cut corners by doing everything themselves. No matter how good of a story you write, if the book is sloppily edited, that will take precedence over the story.

Is there anything else you would like to add that I haven’t included?

Absolutely nothing. You’ve done a fabulous interview and, I think, covered everything that needed covering. Thank you so much for asking me to do this interview!

Another Great book based on a true story about past life … Extremely interesting!

416Hfx0NxAL._SY344_PJlook-inside-v2,TopRight,1,0_SH20_BO1,204,203,200_ ”Many lives many masters” by Dr. Brian Weiss was recommended to me by a good friend of mine. Thanks for sharing the information Eli.

I know that I often get my next book by friends or family recommendations. So, those of you who’ve been keeping “knowledge” of a GOOD book titles, please share with me, so I can share with more people….

Let’s talk about the book! Like my good friend Eli told me the book “It’s based on a true story. The patient reveals her past life experiences under hypnosis. Extremely interesting.“

Well this book is about Dr. Brian Weiss of Yale who’s a very logical person untill he met Catherine, the patient who was depressed. Dr. Weiss records what his patient says about her previous past lives when he puts her in a state of hypnosis. During these sessions, Catherine experienced a myriad of past lives and also talked to The Masters… a group of spiritual beings.

Catherine began to channel messages from the space between our earth when we die and the beyond. What cemented Dr. Weiss’ belief is the fact that Catherine began to deliver news about his family and his dead son!

Using past-life therapy, Dr. Weiss was able to cure Catherine and now regularly regresses patients to past lives. If you are an unbeliever regarding reincarnation, I’m quite sure that after reading this book, it’ll give you food for thought and it just might make a believer out of you. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about this book since I turned the last page!34452

The book will move you, inspire you, make you cry, make you think, make you laugh. Dr. Weiss makes it very clear that our past lives, have a definite influence on our current life. This gives credit to the often hidden unconscious sole…

One of the most thought provoking books I have read. If you are going to read one book about the concept of reincarnation, this is it. The credentials of its author are impeccable:   an undergraduate degree from Columbia, a medical degree from Yale, the authorship of numerous articles on psychopharmacology in scientific journals, a respected position as department chair in a major medical center.

Life is delicate. This time here on earth is limited and should be enjoyed without regret or self-doubt. There are possibly many lives before this one. I believe that what we know in this life is built on from the last. The life experiences we gain and meant to occur for us to proceed in the next life and the lessons not learned will carry over.

For more information on Dr. Brian L. Weiss work you can visit his website here!

You can find this book here! Hope you will like it! :)

XoXo, Meggie

Scientific Proof of Reincarnation

Scientific Proof of Reincarnation

Dr. Ian Stevenson’s Life Work
150px-Ian_Stevenson

Dr. Ian Stevenson

Is reincarnation possible? For many people the idea of reincarnation seems remote and bizarre. BUT, there is compelling evidence of life after death, either in spirit in some other realm, or reincarnated here on Earth.

There are many books on reincarnation written by those who want to make a quick buck, or those promoting a particular religious thought or simply to become popular and appear on talk shows and then charge people (gullible) on an hourly basis.

Dr Stevenson is not driven by any such factor. He is probably the best known, if not most respected, collection of scientific data that appears to provide scientific proof that reincarnation is real, is the life’s work of Dr. Ian Stevenson. He is Carlson Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Division of Parapsychology, Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry, at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He has devoted the last forty years to the scientific documentation of past life memories of children from all over the world. He has over 3000 cases in his files. Many people, including skeptics and scholars, agree that these cases offer the best evidence yet for reincarnation.

The idea that some children of ages three to five not only remember a previous existence, but can identify loved ones from it, strikes most Westerners as so bizarre that it compels disbelief. Perhaps this is why the world’s foremost investigator of the phenomenon, Dr. Ian Stevenson, has attracted so little attention. He has always been careful to say his work is only “suggestive of reincarnation” but he clearly leans that way. His evidence is compelling that something strange is happening – especially when children remember past lives, call out for relatives (in there past life) by name, have unexplained bruises and recognize their old past-life neighborhoods. Yes, strange and wonderful indeed. But not, by any means, determinative of reincarnation.

Dr. Ian Stevenson’s work gives an overview of the history of the belief in and evidence for reincarnation. Representative cases of children, research methods used, analyses of the cases and of variations due to different cultures, and the explanatory value of the idea of reincarnation for some unsolved problems in psychology and medicine are reviewed.

Hypnosis, while useful in researching into past lives, is less reliable from a purely scientific perspective. In order to collect his data, Dr. Stevenson methodically documents the child’s statements of a previous life. Then he identifies the deceased person the child remembers being, and verifies the facts of the deceased person’s life that match the child’s memory. He even matches birthmarks and birth defects to wounds and scars on the deceased, verified by medical records. His strict methods systematically rule out all possible “normal” explanations for the child’s memories.

You can reed more about him and his research here!

All of Stevenson’s books have been published by the University Press of Virginia, and all are in print. They include Twenty Cases Suggestive of Reincarnation; Cases of the Reincarnation Type (four volumes). Unlearned Language: New Studies in Xenoglossy, and Telepathic Impressions. A Review and Report of Thirty-five New Cases. If you are interested in knowing anything about reincarnation, or want any proof of it, read Stevenson’s books. He is sincere, scholarly, scientific, and thorough in his research.

Life Before Life: Children’s Memories of Previous Lives Paperback by Jim B. Tucker  (Author), Ian Stevenson (Foreword);
Where Reincarnation and Biology Intersect by Ian Stevenson M.D. (Author);

You will never prove that heaven or hell exist, in any scientific sense, anyway, but there is evidence for the idea of many lives, and Stevenson presents some of it in his books. :)

Rocket & The Ghost rock band

Calling Rocket & The Ghost a “rock band” would be the easiest way to categorize them, but not necessarily the most accurate. They have all the proper elements: thunderous drums, booming bass, the fuzz and wail of two electric guitars, and it’s clear that The Rock n’ roll music of the ’60s and ’70s that so influenced the London Souls had indelibly left a mark, both on Kiyoshi’s songwriting and showmanship.’

Rocket & The Ghost was born out of a brief but powerful songwriting collaboration with Lily Claire (of Lily & The Parlour Tricks) to help flesh out the songs Kiyoshi had written during his last year with The London Souls. He reached out to Brian Kesley(bass), Stuart Bidwell (drums), Sean Gavigan (guitar), and Alan Markley (keyboards) to hear what would come of this new music, and the chemistry was undeniable.

The band will whisper in your ear one minute and holler at you from the top of a mountain the next…

And then there are the songs themselves, which draw as comfortably from 1920s Americana as they do from millennial pop music without losing their fundamental garage grit. At their heart they are folk songs; they tell stories.

LOVE THIS BAND!!! :) :) :)
