My Thoughts:
The Queen by Kiera Cass
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
It is interesting getting this glimpse of the past of Queen Amberly and King Clarkson, and nice to see that he did not always have a stick up his butt!
Seeing a bit about how Clarkson grew up and the way his parents were does kind of explain some things, though. But if I had been Amberly, the scene after their clandestine desert date would have scared the crap out of me.
I can kind of understand the negative reviews, but then again, why would someone read books in a series out of order.
I really enjoyed this story. It was nice to see Clarkson carefree for once. Makes you wonder what must have happened to turn him so — different in his later years.
Once again, the author paints a brilliant picture. I felt like I was in the room with these girls, experiencing all that they experienced. When The Queen ended, I felt a wide range of emotions all at once. I cannot wait to continue the series.

“BELLA?”
Edward’s soft voice came from behind me. I turned to see him spring lightly up the porch steps, his hair windblown from running. He pulled me into his arms at once, just like he had in the parking lot, and kissed me again.
This kiss frightened me. There was too much tension, too strong an edge to the way his lips crushed mine – like he was afraid we had only so much time left to us.
—
As Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob – knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella has one more decision to make: life or death. But which is which?
Readers captivated by Twilight and New Moon will eagerly devourEclipse, the much-anticipated third book in Stephenie Meyer’s riveting vampire love saga.
My Thoughts:
Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I really have lost count of how many times I have read the books in this series. I still enjoy the story just as much as I did the first time I read it, but I do seem to be a bit more discerning and more observant as a reader than I had been years ago when I read them for the first time.
I couldn’t help but notice some inconsistencies in the story this time around. For instance, she mentions the date being June 4th, and then a few pages later says the weather felt more like February than May. There were little things like that. Thus, the lower rating than I may have previously given the story.
I love the action in this one, for some reason, though I felt a bit…conflicted about the Edward versus Jacob drama. I mean, I love a good love triangle like the next person, but things just always seem to work out too well for Bella, and I am conflicted about the way so many boys just seem to be throwing themselves at her.
I seem to be doing a lot of rereading lately, instead of reading new books, but I had been in a bit of a reading and blogging slump, and this was just what the doctor ordered to help me get back into the groove.

My Thoughts:
Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
3-1/2 stars.
The completion of this series always seemed rather bittersweet to me. On one hand, you get closure on a lot of unknowns that have permeated the series, but on the other hand, you get a few more unknowns that you can’t help but wonder about.
The old favorite characters feature prominently, but it always confuses me when an author introduces new characters so close to the end like this author did. You are left to wonder about the new players and no way of getting closure on the newest plot twists that are introduced, because the series is over and you are not going to get to know the characters any more than what is laid out in the pages you have already read.
There were not nearly as many inconsistencies in this final installment as there had been in some of the earlier books, so the writing style improves some.
I really don’t know what it is about this series, though. It is not the best writing I have ever read, and one of the rare instances when I enjoy the movie more than the books, but I still keep coming back to it every couple of years. Maybe it is a matter of wanting to read something I know I already enjoy to clear a slump, maybe it is wanting to revisit old friends. For me, this series started it all. I hadn’t read anything in so long, and then devoured these books in short order. Whatever the reason, I still enjoy it every time I pick it up, even with knowing already what is going to happen. I guess that says something.

Where you can get it: Amazon
How much: List Price 17.99 (Hardcover)
Format I read it in: Kindle
Description/Blurb:
Lauren Oliver’s powerful New York Times bestselling novel Delirium—the first in a dystopian trilogy—presents a world as terrifying as George Orwell’s 1984 and a romance as true asRomeo & Juliet. In an alternate United States, love has been declared a dangerous disease, and the government forces everyone who reaches eighteen to have a procedure called the Cure. Living with her aunt, uncle, and cousins in Portland, Maine, Lena Haloway is very much looking forward to being cured and living a safe, predictable life. She watched love destroy her mother and isn’t about to make the same mistakes.
But with ninety-five days left until her treatment, Lena meets enigmatic Alex, a boy from the Wilds who lives under the government’s radar. What will happen if they do the unthinkable and fall in love?
Delirium received starred reviews from Kirkus and School Library Journal, and was named a Best Book of the Year by USA Today, Kirkus, Amazon.com, YALSA, and the Chicago Public Library and was selected as one of NPR’s Top 100 Best Ever Teen Novels.
Supports the Common Core State Standards
My Thoughts:
Delirium by Lauren Oliver
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This book/series poses a very interesting concept: Is love a disease? Is love the cause of all of the worlds problems, something to be eradicated, feared? Or can love truly exist as a beautiful thing, in a world where people coexist harmoniously? Does love have to mean pain and heartache, or can love be happiness and joy?
In the beginning, I almost felt like maybe Lena was a bit shallow and self-centered. She just wanted the cure. The same cure that did all of those horrible things to her mother and took everything away from her. But she didn’t see it that way. She saw it as salvation. If only she really knew what she was signing up for, huh?
Hana was the ultimate party girl and probably one of my favorite characters in the book.
The evolution of this characters and the world-building that took place was amazing. I felt instantly connected to the story. It takes place in the current time, but in an alternate world. I could so easily picture that being the true case as we watch the news debate gay marriage and things like that that define what is right and just and moral in the world. Because, of course, we fear the unknown. We are taught that that which is different or not the same as everything else, the unknown, is frightening and scary and something to be avoided at all costs, right?
But there is a beauty underneath the story, in the subtext, that you almost have to dig deep to see. It is so worth it though. I urge every teenager, every adult, every HUMAN to read this book. It will make you look at things in a whole new light, and re-evaluate everything you have ever known about love and relationships. It was utterly mind-blowing.

My Thoughts:
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Once again we find our heroes in the throes of adventure and excitement.
It never ceases to amaze me that, no matter how many times I have read this book, I still get sucked in and am rapt with attention as I turn the pages.
I think the series this time around is all the more exciting because I am reading them with my son, but maybe that is just me. Of course, he cheated and skipped this one since his school library was out of it and he wanted to be able to “impress people by carrying a big dang book,” so he skipped to Goblet of Fire instead of reading Prisoner on his Nook. But now mom is thoroughly caught up and will likely be ahead by the end of the weekend, as he is camping.
I love that series’ like this exist so that I can share something in reading a good book with my children. I love seeing their eyes light up when they find a favorite character and get to read all about them. There is nothing better than that.

Description/Blurb:
Kiera Cass’s #1 New York Times bestselling Selection series has enchanted readers from the very first page. In this fourth romantic novel, follow Illéa’s royal family into a whole new Selection—and find out what happens after happily ever after.
Twenty years ago, America Singer entered the Selection and won Prince Maxon’s heart. Now the time has come for Princess Eadlyn to hold a Selection of her own. Eadlyn doesn’t expect her Selection to be anything like her parents’ fairy-tale love story…but as the competition begins, she may discover that finding her own happily ever after isn’t as impossible as she’s always thought.
A new generation of swoonworthy characters and captivating romance awaits in the fourth book of the Selection series!
My Thoughts:
The Heir by Kiera Cass
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I cannot believe that I just sat down and finished this novel in less than 24 hours. I had so anxiously awaited this one that I feel like it went way too fast!
I am not sure what I expected when I began reading this, but I am fairly certain I got so much more than I had bargained for. The change of perspective with the Selection occurring with a female heir is… Overwhelming is the first word that comes to mind.
Kiera Cass has artfully crafted so many emotions into all of these pages that it is hard to imagine that so much has been fit into so few pages, comparatively speaking.
I enjoyed reading this book but by the end I have more questions than answers and now feel like I will be sitting on the edge of my seat to find out how it all turned out. Part of me is a little disappointed for a few reasons. One, that there wasn’t a bit more background on what had happened over the last eighteen years of their lives, and partly because I had hoped things would be wrapped up nice and neat by the end, instead of yet another cliffhanger and the wonder about whether or not there was going to be another book. Ms. Cass if you are reading this, please! I really need to know what happens.

Book Excerpt:
Inside this rustic cottage she heard nothing but—
Her heart stopped.
She was not alone.
Whoever was with her was as still and watchful as she. Her fingers longed to flex in defence, but she kept them still. Was it someone she could overcome? With her magic tingling in her veins and her rage at what had been perpetrated upon her, she knew she could. She could overcome anyone who dared stand in her way.
She allowed her eyes to open completely and, after a moment, saw beyond the feeble light from the small window and into the gloom of the dark corner. Another blink, and shape emerged. Long legs stretched forward. Elbows were planted on the arms of a chair. Long, pale fingers steepled and glittering black eyes stared over them at her. A predator, watching. Waiting.
She shot up, the pain in her right shoulder tearing through her. “How dare you!”
His wand flicked out, aimed at her heart, though beyond the movement of that one agile hand, the rest of his body remained as still and dangerously relaxed as before. “Quite easily,” he purred.
Her purple gown, once a source of horror and then of wondrous pride, now was ripped open with a bandage and too much skin showing beneath it. She covered herself with both hands, enraged. “What sort of blackguard watches a young lady sleep?” she demanded, her heart pounding. “And… and…” She found herself unable to voice her shock and alarm at being faced with a wand again, much less the sort of man who would possess one.
A shudder of revulsion rippled through her.
“I’ve not been watching you sleep. I’ve been watching you awaken.” The wand twitched. “Consider carefully any move you make, because if I even suspect that you are about to attack me again, you will be chastened. Again.”
Chastened? Was that what he called it?
His voice was silky and menacing in the gloom. “Unless you’d like a wound in your left shoulder to match that on your right?”
She drew back in fear, despite herself.
“Ah, so we have an understanding.”
He twirled his wand through his slender, nimble fingers and then back into his palm again.
About the Author
Patricia Burroughs had insomnia throughout her entire teen years. This meant she read books in the middle of the night, and slept during class in the middle of the day. Unless, of course, she was hiding a novel inside a physics textbook. Who needed physics? She believed in magic. Eventually she turned her propensity for daydreaming and scheming into storytelling, which manifested in award-winning screenplays and books. She still can’t sleep at night, but now it’s her own characters keeping her awake.

Christopher John Francis Boone knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057. He relates well to animals but has no understanding of human emotions. He cannot stand to be touched. And he detests the color yellow.
This improbable story of Christopher’s quest to investigate the suspicious death of a neighborhood dog makes for one of the most captivating, unusual, and widely heralded novels in recent years.
My Thoughts:
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I received this book as a gift when I needed a book that would change my perspective.
My initial thought, of course, was who kills a dog with a garden fork?!?!
The author really captures the essence of the stereotypical characteristics of autism fairly well. I kind of felt like I was watching Rain Man in a sense, though, and i know that that is not how autism always looks. The language seemed a little juvenile and awkward at times, but in the context of the main character being autistic, that kind of worked.
There is something almost sweet about Christopher’s awkwardness. This poor kid has been through so much and he is still as matter of fact about it. His mom is dead, and as far as he is concerned, that is just that.
I found it interesting that the main character of this book is an autistic teenage boy. This is a perspective that you do not get to read very often. As the parent of an autistic child, I wish that there were more books like this.
Many might find the narrative awkward, but that is part of what makes it real, I think. I often wonder if this is how the world looks to my daughter.
I think the author really captured the essence of it and i felt a connection to Christopher. He faced so much that would be hugely overwhelming but he did not give up. Even when he discovered his father’s secret, he found a way to deal with it and move on.
I think that this book was well written and I am really glad that I read it.

#ArmchairBEA: Is it really over?

It’s hard for me to resign myself with the fact that yet another Armchair BEA has come to a close.
I was not able to participate as fully this year as I have in previous years and feel as though I missed so much. I will be going back through and reading many of the posts for several days to come, getting to know some more of the bloggers, reading the blogging Q&A posts and just generally reminiscing about this years event.
I was only able to make one of the Twitter Chats, but I thoroughly enjoyed my time there and getting to know some new to me bloggers. Hopefully these interactions will carry me through and I will make every effort to be a more engaged and involved blogger in this community that I have come to love.
We as book bloggers are spread throughout the world and yet each year during events like Armchair, we come together and enjoy a sense of camaraderie and community that remains unrivaled.
What were your favorite topics? Your favorite posts? Hidden gems that you think I might have missed and really need to check out? Let me know in the comments. Until next year, my friends.

Description/Blurb:
Is love worth betraying everything? Plunge into the second adventure in the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series and “prepare to be hooked” (Entertainment Weekly).
Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what’s normal when you’re a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who’s becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn’t ready to let her go—especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary’s only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil—and also her father.
To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings—and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?
In this breathtaking sequel to City of Bones, Cassandra Clare lures her readers back into the dark grip of New York City’s Downworld, where love is never safe and power becomes the deadliest temptation.
My Thoughts:
City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I am way behind on reading this series, I know, I know.
I had read the first when the movie had first come out, but then never got around to getting to the rest of it. Now I am wondering what had taken me so long.
I had been awfully careful to avoid reading other reviews so that I didn’t get throttled with spoilers, and now I almost wonder if some of the emotional blows would have come as less of a shock if I had been warned. Such a fine line to walk, indeed.
The action and adventure and emotional turmoil picks up where it left off in City of Bones. Clary’s mom’s condition is the same, and you have to wonder what is going to get blasted at these poor kids next.
Then, to endure so much, only to have everything turned upside down on you again and again. I cannot wait to see what more the author has in store.
The author paints a vivid picture and you will find yourself wondering what just happened, feeling like you need to re-read in case you missed something. A lot of the cliff hangers left me gasping. I didn’t see them coming, but I think maybe I should have.
Onward to the next book! Have you read City of Ashes? Let me know what you thought.
