Movie Review: Hobbs and Shaw
Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham star in this film as Luke Hobbs and Deckham Shaw, former rivals, who now must work together to save the world. MI-6, British Intelligence, was in the process of stealing a dangerous virus when the operation goes sideways. The lead agent, Hattie Shaw played by Vanessa Kirby, injects herself with the virus instead of allowing it to be stolen by Brixton played by Idris Elba, but she’s framed for stealing the virus and killing her team. On the run, she runs into her brother, Deckham, who helps her escape. However, he and Hobbs are then framed for crimes they didn’t commit. They are relentlessly chased by Brixton, the black superman.
It’s best not to take this movie too seriously. It’s fun and filled with a lot of action. The dialogue can be a little tiresome as Hobbs and Shaw bicker continuously during the first half of the film. But once the action starts, hold onto your hat. Many of those stunts looked extremely dangerous and should not be tried by amateurs. In addition, Vanessa Kirby as Hattie Shaw was a beautiful badass.
There are a few surprises as well. Ryan Reynolds is a CIA agent and Kevin Hart is an air marshall, both have small but interesting roles in the film. In addition, there are additional clips of the film even at the end of the credits. By then, everyone else in the theater was gone.
One of the reasons why I wanted to see this movie was for a song that was on the TV program, 'Songland' called “I’m Just Getting Started” sung by Aloe Blacc and written by Kyle Williams and others. I was interested to see how it fit in the film. It didn’t come into play until the credits were rolling, however and had been changed significantly from the original. Still, I recognized it immediately. I thought it could have been used earlier as well to provide some impact on the beginning of the relationship between Hobbs and Shaw.
Oh and by the way, the ending left plenty of room for a sequel. We’ll see them again.
