Book Review: Fractal Noise by Christopher Paolini

Published in 2023. Science Fiction. The spaceship, Adamura, is in orbit around an uninhabited planet called Talos VII when the crew discovers a perfectly round hole on the planet’s surface. The ship’s captain decides to send a ship to the surface to investigate since a hole like that must have been formed by some form of intelligence. Six volunteers are sent; two will stay with the lander and four will make the sixty-kilometer trek to the hole. The ground explorers detect movement on the surface, which look like moving rocks, and they also detect a sound at a regular ten point six second interval. Thud.

Interesting story. It mainly focuses on the relationship between the four ground explorers as they battle the elements and each other to reach the hole. They push on despite all the hardships to determine if the hole is harmful to humans.

The author does an excellent job building tension in the climax by incorporating the noise made by the hole. I couldn’t put the book down during this part. This is the third book in the Fractalverse by this author, but I didn’t have to know what happened in the first two books. I don't know if this is the end of the series or if it goes on.
