Grandparents Day Tech

GRANDPARENTSMy in-laws (and the only surviving grandparents to my children) live states away but are very interested in being involved and staying connected to our kids so much so that during every visit with the grandparents, my kids will spend time giving an iPhone or iPad tutorial to them. My kids will set up and run through how each application work and everytime my parents’ visit, there is usually one new application shared and downloaded.

I asked my kids (Millennials of ages 12 and 18) which technologies they like to use or would use more often with their grandparents. Here are their top three:

FaceTime/Skype-My kids have used both and prefer FaceTime from their iPhones but both are more or less the same. Aside from texting and Snapchat, FaceTime is the leading way my daughter stays connected with her friends.

Note: Holding the phone down below your chin is very unbecoming on FaceTime, so be forewarned, you may find doing these calls from your iPhone also offers a limited workout for your arms as you try to keep the phone up near your face. (Or maybe a little higher for a more flattering view to share with kids and grandkids.)

If you don’t have FaceTime, you can use Skype. We have used it from our home computers to call my in-laws for a quick video chat.

2. Snapchat-My son sums up Snapchat as a “better way to send snapshots of what you are doing.” Not only does he find it easier than texting a photo, but you can also add captions, emojis, and even filters to enhance the image.

I’ve witnessed him take hundreds of selfies and share them with friends. I opened up an account in hopes of making sure I had the opportunity to have him share a few of the good photos with me, especially now that he’s heading off to college. My son is much more apt to respond to Snapchat than return a text.

3. Words With Friends-When we visit the grandparents at their cabin, we are usually huddled around a game of Bananagrams. When we aren’t together, it’s one way my kids can still have fun with my mom, who is the gamer in the family.

I hope you will find these suggestions give you some new ways to connect the generations within your own family and Happy Grandparents Day!!

NOTE: In last month’s article, “Why You Need to Know Your Kids’ Passwords,” we shared that creating a written list might be the only way you would ever be able to access a minor’s online account. What you agree to (usually without reading it) says that no one else has any right to access that account. For this reason, we recommend having your children create a written backup that goes into a sealed envelope we hope you never have a need to open. It’s a bit disconcerting because there’s a lot of signals going across your face at anyone time.

Companion-logoCompanion(Free; iOS & Android) A virtual security guard for walk home from the University of Michigan. Companion allows you to sign people up that you would want to alert if, heaven forbid, something were to happen on a walk home. If you go 15 minutes without responding to a prompt, Companion lets your people know.

Rx Breakup (Free on iOS & Coming soon to Android) Created by therapist Jane Reardon & Jeanine Lobell, Rx Breakup is daily medicine for a recent split. The app provides activities and a motivational daily message with a social community element. Rx Breakup promises to help get over heartbreak in 30 days.

UnknownRantt(Free; iOS & Android) A social network for social news. An opportunity to engage with the news by selecting what news piece you want to engage with.

unnamedDuey Dialer (Free on Android & Coming soon to iOS) Helps drivers pulled over by law enforcement who think they’re potentially at risk for getting a DUI. Duey Dialer records the conversation with law enforcement and, if you don’t respond in a certain amount of time, the app alerts an attorney that your phone may have been confiscated. Police response has been mostly positive to Duey Dialer but always reminds drivers that the most preventable cause of death is drinking and driving, so just don’t do it.

Radio Recap: Digital Trends

maxresdefaultOne of the oldest industrial exhibitions in Germany is currently taking place in Berlin. The IFA global trade expo is the European version of the Consumer Electronics Show held annually in Las Vegas. IFA is over 90 years old, beginning in 1924, and is held in a venue the size of 21 soccer fields featuring the latest tech innovations of over 1,600 exhibitors to more than 200,000 attendees. In 2014, IFA generated orders over 4 BILLION Euros in the 6 days during the exhibition alone.

This year’s IFA started September 4th and ends September 9th so today Randi sat down with Jeremy Kaplan, the editor-in-chief at Digital Trends, and digital marketing strategist, Clint Schaff of Camp Playa, to discuss digital trends and digital marketing. Here’s quotes:

JEREMY KAPLAN

“I like tech that addresses specific problems. It should do something for us.”

“IFA got its origin outside of the electronics space.”

“One of the biggest things we see is TVs.”

“The OLED Panasonic television won our Best in Show. It is astonishing beautiful to look at.”

“There’s been a lot of change in the display world, so you have you those curved tvs. The tech behind it is impressive.”

“4K UHD TVs are a big revolution we’re going to see. Especially this holiday this system.”

“I just want a remote from Apple, not a TV.”

“We were wowed by the new Gear S2 by Samsung. They spent a lot of time refining something that works well. “

“One of things Apple is going to announce are gadgets for the smarthome.”

“The big thing at IFA are the appliances. We saw a fridge with a built in ice cream maker.”

“I have a new microwave and range and the time is always off. Samsung has a software that allows appliances to sync up.”

“The Sony Xperia 4K smartphone is impressive.”

“The drone space was fantastic.  I like the drones that can follow you when zipping downhill on your skis.”

“Previously LG was the only TV maker putting out OLED screens which are set to replace LCD.

“All of the major tech companies are pushing into virtual reality.”

“VR is such a funny market, it’s hard to get a feel on it.”

“Virtual reality is a wonderful technology but it’s very isolating.”

“The thing that blew my mind the most was a demo of the HoloLens from Microsoft. It took a 3D mapping of Mars so I was walking on the surface of Mars.”

“I don’t think timely and trendy is the most important. Get something well put-together and get good reviews.”

“A lot of tech companies think they have to be first out there—look at smartwatches. A lot of them are bad.”

“The app I use the most is Google Skymap. Based on GPS, it will show you the stars.”

“I deleted Snapchat recently. It pours an incredible amount of data in my phone.”

Follow Jeremy Kaplan and Digital Trends HERE.

CLINT SCHAFF

“I was one of the Google Glass adopters. Not only did that not have a function but I didn’t look cool.”

“In our network of “camps”, one thing that’s different is population size. In Canada you reach everyone pretty easily. Not like the US.”

“Digital and social forms of advertising are definitely the most important in marketing.”

“The TV space doesn’t have an awareness of how those things work. And, conversely, VR has built a demand for something that doesn’t even exist yet.”

“As a marketer, I like the app experience of companies like Starbucks which is not a tech company but integrates tech so successfully.”

“We’re all trying to figure out how to do mobile messaging best. For brands that understand that any opportunity to engage is a successful opportunity is doing it right.”

“Most of the messaging apps don’t allow you to search for the company.”

“The New York Tough campaign was successful in localizing the product benefit message.”

“If you’re a small business you need to localize your campaign.”

“Younger people are open to marketing messages as long as they provide value.”

“Quality is paramount.”

“I can’t stop using the photo stream on my iPhone. It allows me to be more private in my sharing.”

Radio Recap: The Business of Pets

Approximately 45% of nationwide households contain some sort of pet—that’s triple the amount of animal owners from the 1970s. Just this year alone, Americans are estimated to spend upwards of $60 billion dollars on their pets’ needs like food, vet care, grooming, boarding, toys and, of course the newest in pet tech. Items like GoPros for dogs, laser pointers for cats, and self-cleaning cages for birds are sweeping the pet industry, and who better to sell these products than the pets themselves. With celebrity pets like Boo the Pomeranian and Grumpy Cat making large fortunes as spokes-animals for even non-pet products, some of the 80 million dog- and 95 million cat-owners of the US are now also looking to cash in the trend.

Today Randi sat down with two guests who can help you, too, build your pet empire from the cat box up: Courtney Dasher, owner of the popular Chi-weenie taking over social media, Tuna, of the brand and owner of animal marketing agency Paws PR, Patricia Jones.

COURTNEY DASHER

“Chi-weenie is such a cute name. When the vet told me Tuna was a mix I just made it up.”

“I met Tuna at a farmer’s market in LA but he was originally rescued by a rescue group in San Diego.”

“He was being called Wormy because he would drop on his belly and worm around because he was so insecure—it was love at first sight.”

“When I first got Tuna he didn’t have his signature smile.”

“There are loads of dog and cat, and even bunny and pig, accounts now on IG but when I started there were hardly any.”

“When I created  in 2011 I had no intention to garner a large following”

“Tuna went viral in December 2012. My dad was encouraging me to start a product line at the time.”

“Overnight Tuna quadrupled in followers.”

“Tuna’s manager is one of my best friends. We dubbed her the Tuna-ger.”

“I thought I could accomplish being Tuna’s manager all on my own but it is not a one-person job.”

“I was approached by Penguin to create a about the day and life of Tuna.”

“I decided I wanted to be like Wilson from ‘Home Improvement’ and for no one to know my identity.”

“Because we’ve gone viral, I’ve become Tuna’s voice so unfortunately I have to appear with him sometimes.”

“I always make sure that whatever brand approaches me is a good fit for Tuna.”

“I try to stay neutral and not be offensive or compromise my integrity.”

“I’m more apt to align with those brands that have a charitable component,.”

““Keeping up with his audience and with all of the emails is the biggest challenge because I try and respond to as many as I can. I take on so much that it has turned into full time for me.”

“I’m an interior designer but now I’m focusing on Tuna. His popularity is still growing and I’m riding this wave until it goes away.”

“Babies and pets are such a great distraction from our days. It reminds us of our innocence.”

“I use my platform to bring people joy. My authenticity and consistency is key to making the audience grow.”

“The quality of photos is really important.”

“I use AfterLight everyday to adjust the lighting and make photos crisper.”

“I love BarkCam. I use it to add cute comments. It’s great for photo shoots with Tuna.”

What is Periscope?

imagesPeriscope—what is it? What’s “doing a scope”? How are you “scoping”? Periscope was bought by the folks at Twitter so when you download the Periscope app you connect it to your Twitter account. Then when you go live a tweet will go out to your followers that you are periscoping.

Periscope’s motto is “Explore the world through someone else’s eyes.” Typically when you log onto Periscope you will find people scoping what they are doing and where they’re at. You may see people scoping rides at Disney, live fashion shows, people walking around town or visiting a winery. People scope a variety of things. Many people scope themselves.

My husband pointed out to me that when you log on the camera faces outwards because you are supposed to film what you are seeing—hence Periscope’s motto. But I find that more than half of scopers are filming themselves talking. Whether it’s giving advice, trying to sell a product or sharing their day with you. It’s quickly becoming “selfie-scope.” But it’s another social media tool, another way to engage and connect with people, and it’s LIVE. Yes LIVE! As in if I’m filming and there is a child screaming behind me you will see it, LIVE!

You are easily able to follow your Twitter followers on Periscope as it works hand in hand. You may also follow strangers as well. When you log onto Periscope you will first be able to see if any of your friends are currently scoping so you can watch them. Or you can click on the map and watch strangers scope. There is a title given to each scope so you usually have an idea what someone is filming.

Once you give yourself a scope title you then go live. People will begin tuning in. You will start to see their names appear at the bottom of the screen. Some people’s names you will recognize because you probably follow them on Twitter while others you will not. Hearts are given when the viewers like what you are doing or saying.

The goal for many is to get lots of hearts because the more hearts means the more value you are offering to your viewers. In order to give a heart you simply tap the screen and you can do so multiple times. Then there are the comments. Remember I said this was live. So you could be filming about getting your hair cut and someone could randomly say “show me your feet.” Which I’m noticing is a trend for some reason.

You do want to be fairly cautious when scoping as well as with your responses and you can always block viewers if need be. Viewers sometimes ask a question or just comment, which you’re able to see and respond to while still live. Many celebrities have already caught on to Periscope and are using it to connect with their fans.

I’m enjoying the ‘Bachelor in Paradise‘ cast on Periscope because they often scope during and after their episodes. Donnie Wahlberg and Jenny McCarthy use it really well. Brands use it to promote new products, launches,  and to answer questions from customers. The ‘Ellen Show’ is coming to New York to film a few episodes and they promoted a two-ticket giveaway via Periscope. It really is a pretty amazing app.

Share your scope name and tell us what’s your favorite part about Periscope? And don’t forget to follow me on Periscope @kdevito!

Top 5 Apps for Millennials

Millennial AppsBefore you can effectively market to a Millennial, there’s a few questions every company needs to ask: What do Millennials value, what do they buy, and what do they want in the future? The best way to answer these questions is by asking Millennials themselves, and one of the best ways to find out anything from any Millennial is by finding out from the experts—Millennials themselves.

Unknown

1) TINDER—Mobile dating app Tinder is changing the way Millennials think about love (and all generations, for that matter). “For older millennials, cultivating a digital persona was a social necessity. For teens and younger twenty-somethings, however, one-touch swiping, liking, and commenting is beginning to feel more natural than the more old-fashioned face-to-face courtship rituals.”—Ryan Bort

Unknown-1 4.55.43 PM2) SNAPCHAT—”Snapchat’s stories entice Millennials to see what locals experience, and the least travel brands can do on this platform is watch, learn, and iterate… With 100 million daily active users on the platform, of which 65% of its audience uploading at least one snap a day, Snapchat is continuously deepening its position in the mobile-first, visual-based community.”—Joyce Manalo

Unknown3) STARBUCKS—”Starbucks’ wildly popular loyalty program is perfectly tailored to Millennials. What Millennials want in a rewards program is what they want in all marketing—tailored, exclusive content that they can see and use on their phones. Starbucks provides tailored content using the app’s home page of how many stars needed until the customer earns a free drink, a list of available rewards + messages that offer discounts or special products.”—Gila Allswang

Unknown4) UBER— “According to the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development, in 2013 60% of all Millennials were interested in renting vs. owning all types of goods and services. With the surge of non-traditional renting options for Millennials, everything from cars, to clothing, to music, to vacations, companies have been working feverishly to provide a continuing source of new products and innovations to meet the Millennial needs.”—Shannah L. Compton

instagram-efjkg5) INSTAGRAM—”73% of Instagrammers are between 15 and 35 years old…48% of Instagram users follow a a brand because they find content interesting or funny, but also 62% of them follow a brand because they love the brand and 54% to discover new things…. 69% of Millennials check Instagram at home, 39% while going to sleep whereas 33% of them when they wake up. This means, Instagram grabs the attention of users throughout the whole day.”—Anthony Clausen

Radio Recap: Millennials

6a00d8341c2f6e53ef01156ffbc4c1970bIf you’ve ever wondered if you’re part of Generation Y—otherwise known as the Millennial generation—you’d have to born between the years 1981 and 2000 to be one of 2.5 billion young influencers globally. Millennials are the most educated and technologically savvy generation yet—plus, with the Millennials’ median income set to grow exponentially over the next 5 years, Millennials alone facilitate the most authentic change in online marketing. Since over 80% of Millennials use personal blogs, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to drive trends, so whether you’re retailer, entrepreneur, or a Millennial yourself, chances are you need to market your product—or yourself—toward the Millennials’ favorite mode of communication—mobile social media.

But before you go and join the latest social media site with hopes of attracting droves of Millennials to your brand, today Randi got inside the heads of Millennial reporter and author of Me 2.0 and Promote Yourself, Dan Schawbel and co-creator of SETT and author of Superman by Habit, Tynan.

DAN SCHAWBEL

“Everything is going virtual.”

“Add to the economy, create something, write a blog.”

“In entertainment there’s not that much money to be made. But in tech there’s tons of money to be made. Why shouldn’t celebrities be able to leverage their names to make money?”

“I’m a Millennial and learned the importance of branding from my first resume where I had internship experience from Reebok.”

“Ask yourself what you want to be known for, what are you the best at, who can you best serve?”

“Pinpoint your niche because there’s so much competition out there.”

“You’re probably not going to get a job at a Fortune 500 company unless you go to college.”

“In terms of skills, social media and tech skills should be leveraged. Keep up to date. Be relevant.”

“There’s a huge skills gap. There are 4.8 million job openings but not enough skills to fill them.”

“I was rejected by 70 out of 70 publishers for my first book.”

“Every book I write is a job transition from the first job to CEO.”

“All my books are Millennial friendly, not just for Millennials but for employers.”

“The average the work week is now 47 hours per week. In Europe it’s 35 hours.”

“There’s a huge epidemic of workplace burnout.”

“I think people in our generation don’t want to be defined by one thing.”

“I’m noticing my friends of mine becoming entrepreneurs through technology who would never been able to do so a decade ago.”

“I’m seeing an uptick in mindfulness to make it through the hard times.”

“There’s a reason that hotels are offering free wi-fi and most cost effective options because of places like Airbnb.”

“Businesses are reacting to Millennials. We’re eclipsed Boomers in the workplace, we’re brand loyal.”

“We want companies to be human, transparent.”

“If Millennials aren’t treated well by a company, they are more apt to spread negative feedback.”

“The app Slack for business is effective.”

“I’m all about long term goals and strategic moves in the short term to make a business successful.”

Unknown TYNAN

“I think anything to get people making something rather consuming is always good.”

“My blog grew to have a certain amount of readers—people who had the same interests. I wanted to build something that people could interact with.”
