Radio Recap: Daily Fantasy Sports

DraftParty014bOnly a few years old, the appeal of fantasy sports is so pervasive that TV shows have been based on them, channels have been made for them, and with the boom of unicorn DFS sites FanDuel and DraftKings—who both raised over $250 million in venture capital this summer—a new advertising model has been born.

Today on “Dot Complicated with Randi Zuckerberg” Jackie Schaffer, co-creator of the FXX hit show, The League, and Erik Groset, the CEO of DFS site, FantasySportsCo.com discussed the success of DFS.

“The DFS model has changed in the last 7 years since we’ve started The League.”

“We work very long hours on our show. We’re out of these little trailers. We’re all working so hard. Don’t make me sleep under my desk.”

“My husband and co-creater of the show, , was a writer on Seinfeld.

“We were on vacation, which were few and far between. It was Christmas Eve when normally we can unplug from work. Instead he’s dialing in to the US and stomping his feet trying to change the outcome of a football game all the way from France.”

“I thought it was it was awesome and pathetic in the way you create characters for a television show.”

Golden Tate who plays for the Detroit Lions and used to play for the Seahawks arrived on set on one of those smartboards. I’m sure his coaches wouldn’t be happy with that.”

“The way DFS works, you set your line up, and pick your players. The games are already in play so there’s nothing you can do to affect the lineup.”

“I’m a very competitive player. Jeff and I play in a league together with the 6 cast members of the show.”

“Season 4 Episode 1 had the cast having their draft while Jenny and Kevin are having their child. I went into labor 4 weeks early and was still running the show. Art truly imitates life.”

“Watching Steve completely lose it at Jon for not knowing who he was playing was one of the best behind the scenes moments.”

“It’s the work-life balance. I have one secret of how I’m so efficient: I still have a Blackberry—it is so fast. It makes me so happy.”

“I cannot type fast enough on the iPhone. For seven years I’ve held onto that Blackberry.”

“My husband is a little disappointed that all the pictures of our children are like 1 megapixel.”

“Big shout to Netflix for changing the business model for TV.”

“I love hearing people tell me that they joined their first league after watching the show. People get really invested in it.”

“I hear a lot of people naming their child or dog after one of the characters of the show.”

“My one big tip that made me a 2-time champion: Don’t tinker.  Go with your gut and stick with it. Tinkering is really part of the problem.”

“We collaborated before, my husband and I, we made Eurotrip for Dreamworks. We’re working on more together.”

“Hopefully if you’re entertaining enough you can hold your own. Just get up there and have some fun.”

“If I’m out of town, Jeff never knows what to get for dinner. He went to a gas station and got a burrito. He just gave up.”

“One of my favorite apps is Matthew Berry and his Fantasy Life is app.”

“In Los Angeles, it’s all about Waze. We’re old school that way.”

Instacart and Artkive are silly things that aren’t valuable to work but definitely to my home life.”

“The apps that I’ve been deleting are points and rewards things that I just don’t need.”

“You have to really believe in what youre doing. The buyers are more often saying no than yes. It’s passion. It’s got to translate to viewers.”

“Everything we’ve ever done comes from such a personal place. You have to be in a passionate place.”

“Success is something you want to be proud of. So only do things you believe in.”

ERIK GROSET

“Given the amount of advertising that FanDuel and DraftKings did this kind of backlash is normal.”

“Any startup that grows too quick it’s going to have it’s fair share of missteps. Look at Uber. It’s explosive growth.”

“I think everyone is taking good steps in getting reputable law firms involved and self-policing.”

“FanDuel and DraftKings are allowing a former US Attorney General to do an independent audit.”

“Fantasy is a game of skill. You think you can beat everyone in the office based on your knowledge.”

“There’s more research that can be done, but it’s how much you know about the sport that determines how well you do.”

“Because it’s such a fast growing industry and we want people to be successful. We want to simplify the process using algorithms.”

“A lot of people do watch 10 hours a day of sports because it’s their passion. They don’t have to do it to be competitive. Everyone has their own intuition.”

“We’re riding the wave, because the two unicorns are doing so much marketing. Ride the trends.”

“Do they need to advertise this aggressively—absolutely not. They’re doing it because the other guy is doing it.”

“The great part of building software is the ability to reach millions of people, but there’s a lot of logistics that go into it.”

“I feel like the butcher is the most knowledgeable person in the market, so I’d ask him for advice.”

Product Hunt is one of my favorite apps right now.”

“I love the Nokia Here maps for navigation in the car. Google Maps and Apple Maps have just blown it.”

“I used to love Shopkick but it got too overly complicated.”

“Follow your passion and trends. If you can find something you’re passionate about and a hot trend you’ll probably be successful.”

Tune into ‘Dot Complicated with Randi Zuckerberg’ next week when Randi sits down with former ‘Housewives of New York’ star, Heather Thomson, to discuss her new clothing brand Yummie by HT. Only on SiriusXM Business channel 111; 12pm ET/9am PT.

2. US Citizen Test Prep(Free, iOS & Android)When a person is applying for US citizenship they have to go through a multiple-choice quiz. This is a list of questions to study from. Such as for those who are citizens of a British commonwealth or can prove that a grandparent is British, they can obtain an ancestry visa to live and work in the UK. In Luxembourg, if one can show family ties back to the early 1900s, you may qualify for citizenship as well.

5. Canada Immigration News  — (Free, Android only) Canada went from one of the easiest countries to get into to one of the hardest to get into, now going the way of the US. With this app users can find any Canadian immigration news via the RSS feed.

Tech & Immigration

business-english-worldWhether you’ve been hearing the different opinions during the presidential debates or reading them online, the one thing that everyone can agree on is that the current American immigration system is seriously flawed, and no industry is getting quite such a beating as the tech industry. Instagram co-founder, Mike Krieger, said it took him less time to build Instagram than it did to get his US visa and Facebook relies on foreign workers so much that it’s one of the biggest companies dependent on the H-1B visa—a temporary visa designated for specialty workers.

With over 11 million undocumented immigrants in the US today, what can be done about the hot-bed problem of immigration in hopes of bringing back the spirit of entrepreneurialism, innovation, and productivity back to our great nation?

Today on ‘Dot Complicated with Randi Zuckerberg’ Randi discussed immigration reform with Todd Schulte, the President of FWD.US, Lynden Melmed, Partner at corporate immigration law firm Berry, Appleman and Leiden LLC, and Stephanie Lewin, Senior Associate at BAL.

TODD SCHULTE

“I think it’s critical people come forward and tell their story.”

“We believe that a healthy immigration reform is a huge strength for this country.”

“The technical term for having students come here and then send them elsewhere to grow other economies is “bonkers.”

“2 ½ years ago there was a real moment where comprehensive immigration reform had it’s moment.”

“1986 was the last time we had immigration reform. 29 years. Almost 3 decades. Atari was the tech company of the time.”

“The tech industry prides itself on creating opportunity that allows the best and brightest to succeed.”

“40% of startups are founded by immigrants or children of immigrants.”

“Our tech sector is being held back by the visa process.”

“We are fighting everyday to get Congress to pass immigration reform.”

“A year ago, President Obama was going to take Congressional action to improve the immigration reform with the ‘start-up visa’ allowing people to stay here.”

“There are a lot of presidential candidates doing a great job, and a lot doing a really bad job on immigration reform.”

“People are looking for a common-sense solution and want to hear that from candidates.”

“Passions run high on immigration. People can play to those emotions in bad ways.”

“The alternative to not stapling a green card to a STEM degree is watching skilled talent take their world-class education to other economies.”

“Tell your story or someone effected by the broken immigration system. Reach out to the policy makers. And pay attention to this presidential election.”

LYNDEN MELMED

“One of the positive aspects of the debate is that people are willing to go out and discuss their own personal journey of becoming an immigrant.”

“It takes courage for people to come out and put themselves into a personal situation.”

“Policies affect people.”

“People forget the EB-5 is in the job creation category. You have to put your money at risk and prove that 10 jobs have been created with your investment.”

“Immigration can contribute to the economy.”

“The last few administrations looked for ways to retain foreign-born students in the US. It’s a challenge to do it within the 6 month time frame allotted.”

“Congress has not updated the annual caps for skilled immigrants for over 25 years.”

“Since 1990, the visa cap has been set at 85,000. This year over 200,000 applied for one.”

“The wait time to get a green card is 10 years. That’s a lot of uncertainty. It’s a silent killer in trying to get skilled workers into the US.”

“Other companies are catching up, investment follows skilled workers. They help the tax base.”

“When a company says they need to sponsor an employer they’re required to jump through hoops. They only go through this process if there really is the need.”

“The market needs to work. Companies need someone with the right experience to contribute something specific. It’s not a broad brush stroke.”

“The companies we work with believe there’s a shortage of the skills they need and are investing money to get the skilled workers they need.”

“The green card back lot has risen in the past 5-10 years. You used to only wait a year or two.”

“While waiting those 10 years for a green card, there’s a very good change that spouses and family members will not be able to work during that time.”

“For tech companies the strategy starts with an initial decision of time.”

“Most countries have some form of a work visa that take 3-6 months to get. It allows them to work for 3-6 years.”

“Immigration is an emotional issue. People want to understand what the practical solution is.

“Today if you’re at a small startup and someone needs a work visa, there’s really almost no option to get them one other than winning the H-1B lottery.”

STEPHANIE LEWIN

“The EB-5 program allows people to invest in projects and speed up the process to obtain residency faster.”

“There’s smart people all over the world chasing the best and brightest. And for the US to be at the forefront of keeping the best and brightest is critical for the growth of the nation.”

“Inter-company programs are taking certain citizens and putting them in different subsidiaries around the globe.”

“You have corporate immigration and personal immigration. A presidential candidate who can separate the two will be the most successful.”

“I’m not a proponent for open boarders but there has to be some sort of a quota system.”

Have a Relax-Cation

tcoys_fb2According to research, 10% of Americans admit they never manage to relax on vacation because 76% find themselves checking voicemail and email—and that’s just from work. Partner that with all the selfie-stick photos, Periscope videos, Instagram posts and Facebook updates, and you’ve literally experienced your entire vacation through a digital lens. Americans spend the most hours working per year, right behind Japan and South Korea, so why are so many of us wasting our hard-earned time off attached to our digital screen instead of our sunscreen?

Being a vacation spectator is not okay. We need to relax, unplug and recharge with our families and friends, otherwise, what are we really working for? Just as you totally immerse yourself in work, you should immerse yourself as an active participant in relaxing. But if the idea of how to actively relax is already stressing you out, let me show you how to do it the easy way:

Back in January, I partnered with Celebrity Cruises to curate five rejuvenating spa and fitness experiences, which launched an exclusive wellness program that we call “Take Care of YourSelfie.” With fun names like ”Texticure,” a manicure for your exhausted fingers, and ”fACEial Time,” for those who’ve been overexposed to computer screens, Take Care of YourSelfie allows guests of Celebrity Cruises to power up by powering down as they disconnect from their devices to finally experience their modern luxury vacation as it happens.  If this already sounds too divine to be true, great news! We’ve expanded the Take Care of YourSelfie wellness program to unveil seven new shore excursions, so now vacationers enjoying a Celebrity cruise can find their tech-life balance on land and at sea!

With the new Take Care of YourSelfie excursions, guests can unplug, rejuvenate and experience destinations like a local with adrenaline-fueled adventures, such as hydrobiking and running in the Caribbean or stand-up paddle yoga, hiking or cycling in Europe.

Some of my personal favorites are Power Core’d, a core-busting, paddle yoga session on the calm blue waters of the Mediterranean in Ibiza, Spain. With Morning SHIFT, you can transform from tired eyes to toned thighs as you experience a guided morning jog through scenic Philipsburg, St. Maarten. For those with tense everything, Hot Spot gets you soothing your sore muscles in the natural, thermal mineral waters at a coastal oasis in Melbourne, Australia. And with Flash, Drive, and Ride, a panoramic bicycle tour of Valletta allows riders to put down their phones and take an up-close look at the history and culture of Malta. Now ladies and gentlemen, THAT is how to relax-cation.

So, when planning this year’s vacation, make sure to invigorate your mind, body, and soul with holistic wellness experiences that restore you and Take Care of YourSelfie with Celebrity Cruises!

For more information about how you can experience Take Care of YourSelfie on your next vacation, as well as exciting, upcoming news about the program, visit celebritycruises.com/takecareofyourselfie.

Radio Recap: 2nd Chances

climbing-the-ladderOver 100 cities and countries from 18 states in the nation have already implemented fair-chance hiring reforms including the practice to  “ban the box” — a movement to remove the small box on job applications that asks whether or not an applicant has been convicted of a criminal offense. Statistics show that ex-offenders’ inability to find work doesn’t just hurt the applicants, it hurts the economy as a whole, costing the US upwards of $65 billion in lost output. With around 1 in 33 working-age adults an ex-prisoner and 1 in 15 an ex-felon, it’s estimated that the US economy is losing between 1.5 to 1.7 million workers annually, and that number is rising.

Today on ‘Dot Complicated,’ Randi sat down with Ryan Blair, author of Nothing to Lose and Kabira Stokes, CEO of Isidore Electronics Recycling which creates jobs for the previously incarcerated, to discuss second chances.

RYAN BLAIR

“When I did the tour for ‘Nothing to Lose’ we did it for free.”

“20 years ago a mentor came into my life after I had dropped out of high school and was in a gang.  He gave me a chance to learn about real estate.”

“A mentor came into my life and he was an entrepreneur. He saw something in me the traditional school system did not.”

“Finding your child a mentor is the most important thing you can do.”

“I had to learn vocab, self-study, how to shake a hand.”

“Etiquette and common terms and business practices were the first things I had to learn.”

“I started my first business when I was 20 years old.”

“I started my career in the ’90s in the first dot-com boom. One of my potential investors told me my business wasn’t scalable.”

“I pivoted one failure into a success.”

“I don’t see failure, I see it as a series of learnings if you continue to experiment.”

“I was a tax-payer liability and now I’m an asset.”

“What if there was a program to help take liabilities to tax payers and turn them into assets? People aren’t taught that entrepreneurship is an option.”

“Content is out there. Unlike in my day, the info is there. You have to find it.”

“I was always a writer. I wrote my way out of juvenile hall and into business.”

“I queried every agent out there and eventually I had an agent and then a book deal.”

“I discuss my inner dialogue of how to broker a deal in ‘Nothing to Lose.”

“I saw the reason why I got the opportunity I did and gave back. That’s the fabric of my DNA.”

“Everything that we do has a cause. Once you’ve made enough money you have to make an impact in someone else’s life.”

“I’m passionate about autism because my son has it.”

“Steve Jobs had unique questions for hiring. I have the same process. I’m interested in someone’s personality.”

“I get applicants out of their comfort zone. I play Connect Four or go hiking with them.”

“Is there possibly a person in the organization that you can relate with if you have a past? I’m open to interviewing different people.”

“Craft a great opening letter.”

“Get out there and learn about your target mentor and figure out a way to add value to that mentor. Most mentors make themselves very accessible.”

“Google attempted to help diversify their workforce by hiring those without college degrees.”

“Do not lie and do not conceal. It’s too easy for an employer to find out the truth.” —Scott Dobroski of Glassdoor

KABIRA STOKES

“I came out to LA in 2000 with my grandma’s sewing machine but in 2001 the world changed. The events surrounding 9/11 activated me. I landed in the office of City Councilman Eric Garcetti who is now the Mayor of LA.”

“I was suddenly understanding the lack of opportunity for young people and those coming from previous incarceration.”

“My question was ‘how can we help people who are ready to work after incarceration?’”

“Finding a job for someone with a previous past is almost near impossible. They need opportunities for employment.”

“When you show forgiveness, people will rise for a chance to contribute to society.”

“We are an electronics recycling company. They should not be in our landfills. There’s also gold and silver in these electronics. We offer services to manage that waste stream.”

“On the employment side, even if someone has spent the last 27 years in prison there are pathways of learning involved in the business.”

“We’re a B-Corp. We offer that first step for people.”

“Transitional job agencies hire people to get paid and get job ready.”

“We need to grow the economy and help teach employers to accept those with a checkered past.”

“I won’t hire anyone who has a record of identity theft or fraud because we deal with that sort of sensitive information. You have to know where to draw the line.”

“You have to own your story. Either someone is going to define you or you have to define yourself.”

“We ask different questions, like how you deal with making a mistake.”

“No one gets anywhere without the help of other people.”

“If a young person interested in social enterprise or the prison system sends me an email, they move to the top of my list.”

“I talked to everyone I could think of. Most people want to help.”

“Wal-Mart is super inspiring with their hiring practices.”

Chrysalis in LA helps those who are formerly incarcerated or homeless.”

“Isidore is the patron saint of computers.”

Top 5 Fashion Apps

fashion apps1) Vsco Cam – (Free; iOS & Android) This editing app I use for my photos. I take so many pictures during Fashion Week I don’t want to flood people’s Instagram. VSCO Cam allows me to rearrange my feed so it flows nicely, not like a selfie above a selfie. It makes photo streams seamless.

2) Priv – (Free; iOS & Android) There’s so many makeup beauty apps out there now, but Priv is the Uber of makeup artistry. With Priv, you have great hair and makeup artists to choose from that come to you! Have a photo on your phone to show them what it is you want.

3) Like to Know It – (Free; iOS & Android)  I use this year round. Like to Know it shops by Instagram. Readers can automatically shop what I’m wearing. It introduces people to new products. My followers love being able to shop the outfits even before they hit the blog.

4) Dark Sky – (iOS $3.99 & Android FREE) I found this app through Who What Wear. The weather has been insane this year so it’s helpful to have an app that shows you weather by the minute. It’s better than the Weather Channel and the design is very pretty.

5) Play Memories Mobile (Free; iOS & Android) There are certain photographers that can take great photos with their iPhone but, for me, it’s hard to get perfect shots. I bring my Sony digital camera with me to shoot video but it also takes great photos. I’ll often send a couple to my phone to post on social channels when the lighting doesn’t work on my iPhone.

Wearables, drones, and 3D printing have been all the rage at this year’s New York Fashion Week. From CFDA Fashion Incubator designer Misha Nonoo’s “Insta-show” which sheds the traditional runway route to instead make the show globally accessible using Instagram for its stylized debut, to revealing select pieces from a particular Fashion Week line on the mobile app Covet Fashion—a platform which transforms the actual garment into digital versions that can be styled, experimented with, designers have been showcasing how tech savvy they are.

Today on ‘Dot Complicated with Randi Zuckerberg’ Lea Goldman, the Executive Editor of Marie Claire, and fashion blogger, Sydne Summer, discussed the latest in fashion trends and tech.

“The digital landscape broadened the lens of the people ‘Marie Claire’ would cover. The tastemakers and trendsetters are these fashion bloggers.”

“An adrenaline dress from Chromat can track your sweat. None of this is for sale but the idea being that, not too far down the road, your clothes will adjust automatically to the environment.”

Freezy Freakies gloves and Hypercolor shirts were the precursor to wearable tech.

“It boils down to where the Apple Watch is going. I would never bet against Apple. Did the watch take off? No. But a lot of editors are talking about the Rose Gold band and how hot it looks. It’s not so much about the functionality as it is how good it looks.”

“Rebecca Minkoff had a line of chargers to go with smartphones.”

“I started on the corporate side. It was a time when blogging first started. My friend told me to start a blog so I took headless photos at first.”

“People started interacting with me and my advice and then brands started to approach me and asked to do sponsored posts or work with sponsored clothing.”

“Figure out your brand at first and stay true to it.”
