Stay in a Irish Castle: Pasadena Magazine

Thank you to Malina Saval and Pasadena Magazine for this stunning two-page print feature on Irelands incredible castles! I am so grateful to share my story in print and online for St. Patricks Day from the March/April 2025 magazine. Explore the magic, history, and luxury of these iconic estates!
Castle Living: Embracing Luxury, Adventure, and a Touch of Whimsy in Irelands Historic EstatesImagine waking up in a lavish Irish castle, where every corner tells a story of history and opulence. Surrounded by meticulously manicured gardens that evoke timeless charm, guests are transported to a world of enchantment. The grounds exude a sense of serenity, providing a perfect backdrop for both leisurely strolls and spontaneous moments of whimsy.
As a travel journalist, Ive had the privilege of exploring some of the worlds most remarkable destinations, but few experiences rival the enchantment of staying in an Irish castle. These historic estates offer more than accommodationsthey transport you to extraordinary settings filled with unique adventures. Whether witnessing the graceful flight of soaring hawks during a falconry lesson, cruising serene lakes with nothing but the sound of water lapping against the boat, or simply enjoying the tranquility of expansive gardens, each visit feels like stepping into a dream.
At Dromoland Castle, I felt like royalty from the moment I arrived. The highlight of my stay was a hawk walk, where a majestic falcon gracefully glided to my gloved hand amidst the castles lush surroundings. The quiet stillness of the gardens, broken only by the soft sounds of nature, created a magical atmosphere. After a day of exploration, I relaxed in my luxurious Queen Anne suite, complete with a giant tub, savoring the peace and beauty of the estate while the fading light created a soft glow in the room.
Ashford Castle offered an experience steeped in a rich, 800-year-old legacy. A hawk walk captivated me with the intelligence and grace of these magnificent birds, their sharp eyes surveying the land below. A peaceful boat ride around the shimmering Lough Corrib transported me to a world of natural beauty. Activities like clay pigeon shooting with an Olympian added thrilling excitement, while the castles spa and pool provided moments of pure relaxation.
Ballyfin feels like a page from a storybook, with its Regency-era grandeur and 614 acres of pristine countryside. Every detail, from the elegant interiors to the tranquil gardens and whimsical follies, exudes refinement and charm. Its a place where guests can indulge in quintessential country pursuitshorseback riding, falconry, or quiet moments by a crackling fire. Ballyfin offers the kind of experience that lingers in your imagination long after your visit.
In the heart of Dublin, The Shelbourne blended timeless elegance with urban sophistication. Celebrating its 200th anniversary, this historic hotel offered a perfect fusion of history and modern comforts. Staying in the Michael Collins Suite, I marveled at the rich history embedded in the Constitution Room, where Irelands Constitution was drafted. St. Stephens Green provided a stunning backdrop for a joyful hula hooping moment, blending the vibrancy of Dublins city life with the Shelbournes timeless charm.
The hotels luxurious pool was a serene oasis where I could unwind after a day of exploring the city. But what truly stood out was the spa experiencewithout a doubt, it offered the best hair blowout of my life. Erin, the talented stylist at the Shelbournes spa, transformed my hair into perfect beach waves, ideal for filming my Celtic Charm segment for The Jet Set TV.
Abbeyglen Castle Hotel felt like a welcoming home away from home with its intimate atmosphere and nightly singing sessions at dinner. Tales of the regions history were shared over a glass of smooth Irish whiskey. This time, I hula hooped on the turret that was part of my suite at the top of the hotel, enjoying panoramic views of the picturesque grounds below, embracing the joyful spirit of this enchanting place.
At Lough Erne Resort, I discovered a perfect blend of tranquility and indulgence. A scenic boat ride revealed breathtaking views of the lake, swans and surrounding countryside. The resorts rolling green spaces provided the ideal setting for yet another hula hoop session, embracing the beauty of nature at its finest.
Traveling on Aer Lingus from Los Angeles to Dublin has never been more seamless. With a direct flight and preclearance in Dublin, returning to the USA feels effortless and enjoyable. This smooth experience sets the stage for a memorable journey to immerse myself in the magic of the Irish countryside.
Each of these castles and estates provided a unique perspective on Irish history and hospitalityfrom ancient traditions to modern luxuries like world-class dining and seaweed spa treatments. What truly stood out, however, was how they invited me to fully embrace the moment.
If youre dreaming of stepping into a fairytale, theres no better place than Irelands incredible castles and estates. These experiences offer the perfect blend of opulence and adventure.

Brave-ish on Spectrum News: “Transforming Life for THE BETTER!”
Thank you Catalina Villegas for interviewing me about my award-winning book, BRAVE-ish, and my recent adventures in Antarctica with Quark Expeditions on Spectrum News. What an incredible honor to be featured on Spectrum News with Catalina Villegas, who called our interview “Transforming Life for THE BETTER!” Catalina, a brilliant journalist and board member of the LA Press Club, has always been so supportive of my writing. Every time we see each other at the awards, she asks about my book, and this time, she told me how much she LOVES BRAVE-ish and finds my journey truly inspiring.
During our conversation, she highlighted my ten book awards and my adventuresincluding traveling to Antarcticawhile emphasizing how my story encourages others to step outside their comfort zones. Getting to share these experiences reminded me why I wrote BRAVE-ish in the first place: to show that its never too late to take bold steps and embrace lifes adventures. Im so grateful to Catalina and Spectrum News for the opportunity to share that message!
Her interview of me was called: “Transforming Life for THE BETTER!” We talked about my travels in Antarctica and you can see my videos below:Beyond Spectrum News, Ive had the exciting opportunity to share my journey and BRAVE-ish on several other platforms. From exploring the intersection of tech and travel to discussing the power of storytelling, these conversations have allowed me to connect with new audiences in meaningful ways.
On The Tech Show with Sonya Gavankar, I delved into how technology is revolutionizing the way we travel, sharing insights from my Genesis road trip and how innovation enhances the travel experience. I also had the pleasure of joining Shirin Yadegar on Moms Matter to talk about my adventures, writing, and how travel can be transformative at any stage of life. And at the historic Adventurers Cluban institution with a 103-year legacy of celebrating explorationI had the honor of discussing BRAVE-ish with fellow travelers and storytellers who thrive on pushing boundaries.
Each of these conversations reinforced my belief that adventure isnt just about where you goits about how you embrace the journey. Im so grateful for these opportunities to share, learn, and inspire!

What To Believe: Debby Waldman & BRAVE-ish
Thank you to Debby Waldman for interviewing me! CLICK HERE to read the entire interview
Brave-ish: A Conversation with Travel Journalist and author Lisa Ellen NiverNiver is an inspiration for lots of reasons, not the least of which is that she’s unafraid to reinvent herselfand she always makes it work
When I met Lisa Niver in a writing workshop a few years ago, I was impressed with her confidence and with her commitment to her career as a travel journalist, a career that has taken her to 103 countries and given her some amazing opportunitiesscuba diving with barracudas in the Philippines, hula-hooping with Maasai warriors in Tanzania, running kids programs at Club Med locations and on Princess and Royal Caribbean cruise ships, driving a Lamborghini 150 miles an hour on a race track in Las Vegas.
Hula-hooping demo for the Maasai warriors in Kenya (above) and the women (below)
You only have a career like that, I figured, if youve spent your whole life gearing up for it.
Boy, was I wrong. When I read Nivers 2023 memoirBrave-ish: One Breakup, Six Continents, And Feeling Fearless After Fifty,I discovered shed never set out to be a travel journalist. She actually went directly from the University of Pennsylvania to the University of California San Francisco Medical School in the fall of 1989, when she was 21 years old. Her whole life shed planned to become a doctor, but early in her program at UCSF she began thinking maybe that wasnt the right career path.
During a one-year leave of absence, she took scuba diving lessons and began doing ceramicstwo activities that are still a big part of her life. She also taught preschool and earned a masters degree in education. Scuba diving can be an expensive hobby if, like Niver, you want to dive in exotic locales. When she learned that one of her sisters friends had worked at Club Med, she decided that might be a good way to scuba dive on the cheap. The Club Med gig led the way to the cruise ships, which led to the career she has today, doing TV segments, a video podcast called Make Your Own Map, and writing travel stories for publications like Readers Digest and companies including Booking.Com and Tylenol.
Brave-ish, which Niver initially conceived as an opportunity to write about the 50 brave things she did before turning 50 seven years ago, has received a pile of honors and awards since it was published, some from familiar sounding organizations (Forbes included it on a Best New Non-Fiction list) and some, like the Hearten Award, that Id never heard of. But the Hearten Award was, to me, the most fitting, because Brave-ish won in the category of Uplifting & Inspiring Non-Fiction and Memoir.
Driving a race car 150 miles an hour: brave-ish or foolish? (Id be too scared-ish)Brave-ish is very much a travel bookI, for one, am quite envious of the incredible things Niver gets to do and write aboutbut its really a story about hope and fortitude and not giving up, and how, if you combine those three qualities, you can go far.

Navigating New Yorks airports can be challenging, especially during peak travel times such as Thanksgiving, spring break and other holidays. Here are some tips to help you manage the high traffic and ensure a smooth journey:
Plan ahead: Give yourself extra time if youre traveling during peak periods. Airports and surrounding traffic can be particularly congested, so arrive early and consider alternate routes.Check traffic reports: Use apps like Google Maps or Waze to monitor traffic conditions and find the quickest way to your airport.Security lines: Enroll in TSA PreCheck or Global Entry for expedited security clearance, especially if you frequently fly during busy times.Know your terminal: JFK and Newark, in particular, are large airports with multiple terminals. Make sure you know which terminal your flight departs from and arrives at, to avoid any last-minute rushes.Private charter flightsIf you prefer flying privately, several companies offer charter services from New Yorks airports. This option is ideal for those seeking privacy, flexibility and the ability to fly on your own schedule.
Services available: Companies like NetJets, Flexjet and XO provide a range of aircraft options and personalized services, catering to high-end clients and those traveling in groups.Ideal for: Executives, celebrities and groups needing tailored flight experiences.Ground transportation optionsOnce you land, getting from the airport to your final destination is made easier by New Yorks extensive range of ground transportation options.
Rideshare services: Uber and LyftUber and Lyft are the most popular rideshare options in New York, offering a range of services from standard rides to luxury vehicles. Both apps allow you to book a ride directly from the airport, making it easy to get where you need to go, whether thats a hotel in Manhattan or a meeting in Brooklyn.
Availability: JFK, Newark, LaGuardia, Buffalo Niagara International.Cost: Varies based on distance, time of day and vehicle type.Tips: Use the designated rideshare pick-up areas at the airport to avoid confusion. Be aware of surge pricing during peak travel times and consider shared rides for a more affordable option if youre traveling light.Public transit optionsFor budget-conscious travelers, New Yorks extensive public transit system is a great option. Each of the major airports is well-connected to the city via buses, trains and subways.
JFK: The AirTrain connects JFK to the subway and Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), providing access to Manhattan and beyond.Newark: The AirTrain at Newark connects to NJ Transit and Amtrak trains, offering a quick route into Manhattan.LaGuardia: Although LaGuardia doesnt have a direct train connection, MTA buses like the Q70 SBS link the airport to subway lines in Queens, making it easy to reach the city.Taxis and car servicesFor those who prefer a more traditional ride, yellow cabs are available at all New York airports. Taxi stands are well-marked and staffed by attendants who can help you find the right vehicle for your needs. For travelers who prefer more independence or have a lot of luggage, car rentals are also widely available at each airport, providing flexible and direct routes to your destination.

Eagle Beach, Aruba: The Perfect Mother/Daughter Destination

My daughter and I have been taking annual trips to New York City every holiday season since she was eight only missing 2020 due to COVID. As our journeys evolved, so did our adventures: when she started high school, we added a sunny weekend in Florida between our birthdays (mine in late January, hers in February). Then, during her college years, the tradition paused in favor of her Virginia Tech party weekendswhich, I dont blame her for. Now that I’m in my 50s and my daughter is a fully independent adult, traveling together has taken on a new dynamic. We love spending long weekends together exploring new places.
Last November, while enjoying Eagle Beach in Aruba with my hockey mom friends, I texted my daughter, This is where were going for our trip in February! It was love at first sight, and our subsequent mother/daughter trip lived up to every expectation. It is no wonder that Trip Advisor named Eagle Beach the #1 beach in the Caribbean and #3 in the world!
Here is everything you need to know about a mother/daughter or girls trip to Aruba.
WHERE TO STAY
Aruba is an 18-mile-long island with various areas to stay. Palm Beach is where you’ll find most of the large hotel brands. I loved Eagle Beach so much that we decided to return there for our mother-daughter trip. Its quiet with powder white sand and perfect greenish-blue clear ocean water.
Its funny because neither of us will go into the Atlantic Ocean but we floated for hours in the water in Aruba. TIP: We got these floats ahead of time from Amazon that were easy to travel with.
When I went with my girlfriends, we stayed at the O Condominiums. There were five of us and we had a 3-bedroom condominium. It was perfect. Nothing was available there for this trip, so we booked at Oceania Condominiums a few blocks away. Its a great complex with big, beautiful pools.
We rented a 2-bedroom unit. It was a little worn and in need of a touchup but that didnt deter us. Overall, it was fine, and I would stay at either location again. However, I will zoom in on the pictures of the unit before I book. We used Bocobay to book both trips and could not have been happier with their customer service. They take very good care of their renters and are extremely attentive.
GROCERIES
Staying at a condo with no restaurant on site, we wanted to have some groceries in our unit. Superfood Aruba has an easy-to-use app and they deliver which is great if you dont have your own car. We did however have a lot of issues on both orders with substitutions, and not substituting. It’s hard to believe a grocery store doesn’t have crackers to go with the cheese we ordered. On this trip with my daughter, I decided to check out the Superfood Aruba myself. Its an easy half-mile walk from Oceania. It would be difficult to walk back with a case of water, but it was perfect to grab snacks. You might want to consider delivery for the bigger, heavier items as well as those that are likely to be in stock like fruit, milk, and butter, and go yourself for the things like chips and crackers.
RESTAURANTS
When I went with the hockey moms, we had a rare 2-hour afternoon rainstorm that shut down the roads in Aruba due to flooding. We couldnt get a cab, so we had to cancel our dinner reservation on the other side of the island. Instead, we had to find a restaurant we could walk to. Screaming Eagle was close and had good reviews, so we went there. It was delicious and the food was so memorable that my daughter and I went there on our first night.
We have very similar tastes so every night we shared a little bit of everything appetizer, salad, entree, and dessert. At Screaming Eagle, we had the blackened Chilean sea bass in a champagne sauce with truffle risotto and sauted spinach. I had the sea bass last time too. Its one of those meals you dream about. I cant wait to go back and have it again!
The next night we went to Opus. Ive always heard you should get the special at a restaurant, so we did – Grouper topped with shrimp, which was delicious.
Our last night we went to Ocean Z. This was rated #1 on Trip Advisor and I now know why. If the weather cooperates, definitely request outdoor seating. Across the street is a spectacular sunset over the water.
They had live music when we were there (a Frank Sinatra crooner) and the atmosphere and overall vibe were perfection!
Dinner was spectacular. We had linguini with lobster and shrimp in a wine alfredo sauce. This is another meal Ill be dreaming about!
In November we also went to Giannis (Italian) and Lola Taqueria (Mexican – great tacos and yummy margaritas). Both were really good so if you dont feel like fish or seafood, try one of these. Most restaurants take reservations and I recommend planning ahead.
There are plenty of great beachside restaurants and bars along Eagle Beach to have lunch. We had breakfast in the room, lunch on the beach, and then explored the island for these delicious dinners.
THINGS TO DO
When I went in November, we went to Sopranos Piano Bar. I couldnt wait to take my daughter back. We had so much fun there! Unfortunately on this trip, the piano player called in sick the night we went. The fill-in was a singer not a piano entertainer. He was very talented and we enjoyed his music but the Piano Bar show we saw in November was outstanding. We stayed for hours singing along. I highly recommend spending a night at the Piano Bar – maybe two.
There are also lots of boat excursions and if the weather cooperates, I recommend a sunset tour because the sunsets in Aruba are spectacular!
TRANSPORTATION
There is no Uber or Lyft on the island. Aruba Taxi is available via Whats App and phone but beware they ghosted us! We used them once. They were very late and then picked up the wrong people. They finally sent a cab but we were very late for our dinner reservation. They never responded when I requested a pickup after dinner, nor did they respond to any of our other requests while we were there. Thankfully the restaurants can get you a cab after dinner but getting there might be difficult. I recommend asking your taxi driver from the airport if they will take you places while you are there. We used that driver for the rest of our trip! Make sure you have What’s App before you go. That’s what everyone uses.
WRAP UP
If you want a nice, quiet, relaxing mother/daughter trip or the perfect girlfriend getaway, I highly recommend Eagle Beach. I cant wait to go back! (Maybe Ill take my husband next time :). I hope youll try some of my suggestions above and share this with anyone you know who is thinking about a trip like this.
Heres a video summing up our amazing trip! Enjoy Aruba!
I hope you are enjoying life over 50! If you want inspiration, tips, and advice for life at this stage, tune into the Living Ageless and Bold Podcast. New episodes drop every Wednesday

New York City is a hub of excitement no matter the season, offering everything from Broadway musicals to literary meetups and unique hotel experiences.
NYCs Literary SceneNew York is a city of books, brilliant conversations, and unforgettable connections. I had the pleasure of meeting branding expert and bestselling author Aliza Licht at Ella’s. Aliza is featured in On Being Jewish Now and has authored two must-reads: On Brand and Leave Your Mark. We interviewed each other for our podcasts, discussing our books and exchanging ideas that continue to inspire.
My first visit to the famous NYC Strand Bookstore was with one of the travel authors who inspired me to write my book! Thanks to Holly Corbett and all THE LOST GIRLS who wander and wonder and lift up the community of women travelers!
At the NYU bookstore, Professor Susan Shapiro hosted an insightful panel with top authors and agents, offering a behind-the-scenes look into publishing. Another literary highlight was celebrating National Geographic author Andrew Nelsons book Here Not There at Bspoke House, reconnecting with fellow travel journalists and sharing stories.
Broadway MagicSeeing live theater on Broadway is a must, and Back to the Future was absolutely amazingone of my favorite shows! It was especially exciting to be just steps away from M Social Hotel New York, where I had drinks and played virtual golf. Enjoy the food and drinks from Beast & Butterflies and the rooftop virtual golf experience overlooking Times Square in partnership with Jack Daniels and Golf Pro Delivered (GPD). There is indoor and outdoor space, and you can play any golf course. Of course, we chose Augusta!
The “Stay Like WICKED” immersive suite at the New York Hilton Midtown transported guests to the enchanting Land of Oz, blending art deco elegance with WICKED-inspired decor. Though the experience is no longer available, you can feel the spellbinding atmosphere in my videos below.
The Magic of Central ParkCentral Park is a place of light and love. A gorgeous November day saw the city bathed in sunshine, with the peaceful sounds of Bethesda Fountain and row boats gliding along the water. From playful squirrels to couples exchanging vows, NYCs iconic park is always a perfect blend of nature and city life.
Spiritual and Cultural MomentsA deeply moving experience took place at Central Synagogue, where I attended an event with my friend Cindy. Rabbi Elliot Cosgrove of Park Avenue Synagogue spoke with Rabbi Angela Warnick Buchdahl about his book For Such a Time as This: On Being Jewish Today. Their conversation on identity and community was both timely and meaningful, especially in light of today’s challenges.
Talking Travel with LDPRI had the pleasure of talking travel at Laura Davidson PR in NYC. We gathered at Take Care Restaurant, a casual yet elevated bistro at The Shelburne Sonesta. Make sure to save room for the warm chocolate cookie dessert with ice creamabsolutely divine!

A particularly moving moment came at Central Synagogue, where I attended an event with my friend Cindy, who years ago sent me to Monaco for the Formula E race (a trip Ill never forget and country #97!). Rabbi Elliot Cosgrove of Park Avenue Synagogue spoke about his powerful new book, For Such a Time as This: On Being Jewish Today, in conversation with Rabbi Angela Warnick Buchdahl. Their dialogue was a reflection on identity, purpose, and communitytimely and deeply meaningful given todays challenges.
Throughout all these events, one theme kept standing out: the power of connection and community. In a time of rising antisemitism and over 412 days since the hostages were taken, seeing Jewish authors being supported, celebrated, and heard felt incredibly powerful. Its a reminder that we truly need each other, now more than ever.

From Stormy Speeches to Seven Continents: Feb News 2025 Niver’s Newsletter 182Thank you to everyone who joined me for an unforgettable Galentines Day event at the Adventurers’ Club, where I spoke in the pouring rainso much rain, we nearly needed an ark to get there! Despite the storm, it was a full-circle moment as two dear friends from my cruise ship days flew in to join me, bringing back memories of past adventures on the high seas. I sold and signed books and we had an amazing discussion! In case you missed it, see the livestream video below!
This month, Im celebrating my journey across all seven continents, with more videos coming from my epic Quark Expeditions trip to Antarctica. Im also excited to share new articles on my trip to Puerto Vallarta where I stayed at Grand Velas and Casa Velas Resorts as well as Secrets Bahia Mita by Hyatt. More adventures include homecoming in Philadelphia at Penn and Halloween on the Ruby Princess. On my podcast, watch as I hit the road for a Genesis road trip to Death Valley, and my Spectrum TV News segment dives into my 7th continent adventure and BRAVE-ish.
The heartbreak surrounding the Bibas familymurdered in cold bloodand the hostages who have endured more than 500 days in hell is almost impossible to put into words. As a Jewish author, its deeply painful to witness such unimaginable suffering, especially as the worlds attention shifts while families remain trapped in terror, grief, and uncertainty.
In these challenging times, being Jewish means carrying both resilience and sorrow, standing firm in our history while advocating for humanity and justice. The pain is raw, but so is the urgency to speak, to remember, and to push for the safe return of every hostage.
While Im grateful for these milestones and the incredible experiences Ive been able to share, my heart is also heavy. This moment is a painful reminder of the fragility of joy and the brutal reality we cannot ignore. Storytelling mattersnot just to capture the beauty of the world, but to bear witness to its pain, ensuring that no story, no family, and no truth is forgotten.

BOOKING.com: How to Sleep on a Plane
Thank you Booking.com for publishing my article, “How to Sleep on a Plane: Expert Tips from Frequent Flyers“
Discover essential tips for sleeping on a plane with expert advice on:
Choosing the best seat for maximum restMust-pack essentials for comfortRelaxation techniques to make sleep easierWhether you’re a seasoned traveler or gearing up for your first long-haulflight, the excitement of travel often comes with a challenge: how can I sleep on a plane and get proper rest? While sleeping on a plane may not always be easy, its entirely possible with a little preparation and the right techniques.
Before you board: laying the groundwork for restful sleepSeat selection mattersBefore you even step foot on the plane, your journey to restful sleep begins withchoosing the right seat. While many frequent flyers swear by the window seat for its control over light and uninterrupted sleep (no passengers needing you to move), others prefer the aisle seat for the freedom to stretch your legs without disturbing anyone. But did you know that different airlines have different seating configurations?
Researching your airlines seat maps can help you pick seats with extra legroom, which might be a worthwhile upgrade if youre flying long haul. Exit rows, bulkhead seats, and certain sections like the upper deck on larger planes may offer more space and quiet. Websites like SeatGuru allow you to compare seat layouts and find the best options for comfort.
For those in economy class, window seats near the middle of the plane are often the quietest, as theyre away from both the engines and high-traffic areas like bathrooms and galley kitchens. If youre willing to pay a little more, some airlines offer premium economy, where youll get wider seats and more recline.
Packing smart for sleep
While a seat can only offer so much comfort, your in-flight essentials make all the difference. Seasoned travelers recommend a compact yet effective kit to maximize rest:
A neck pillow: ergonomically designed neck pillows like the Trtl Pillow or Cabeau Evolution Pillow offer excellent support while being easy to stow away.Noise-canceling headphones: these headphones drown out the plane’s constant hum and potential noisy neighbors. Bose QuietComfort and Sony WH-1000XM5 are popular choices.A good sleep mask: cabin lighting can be disruptive, so investing in a quality sleep mask like the Slip Silk Mask can be a game-changer.Compression socks: on long flights, your body might swell due to inactivity and cabin pressure. Compression socks, such as those from Physix Gear, might make you more comfortable.Other items include a large scarf or blanket for extra warmth, particularly on cold flights and a water bottle to stay hydrated you can bring an empty bottle and fill it after security.
Your pre-flight routineOnce your packing is done, think about your pre-flight routine. A little planning can go a long way. Avoiding caffeine and heavy meals in the hours before your flight will help you be ready for sleep. Think about a balanced meal with lean proteins and complex carbs, which provide lasting energy without feeling too full.
Hydration is another key to feeling good on a flight. Airplane cabins tend to be very dry, so starting your journey well-hydrated will help you avoid the side effects of dehydration like headaches and discomfort. Some travelers take it a step further by starting sleep adjustments a day or two in advance, gradually shifting their sleep and wake times to align with their destinations time zone.
Travelers also swear by pre-flight stretching or light yoga to loosen muscles, reduce stiffness, and promote circulation, making it easier to relax during the flight.
In-flight sleep strategies
Once you’re in the air, its all about creating the most sleep-friendly environment possible.
Optimize your sleep spaceOne of the easiest ways to create an optimal sleep environment is by maximizing your seats potential. If youre in a window seat, use the wall as extra support. Leaning against it can give you more stability and reduce head bobbing, which is a common issue while dozing off in upright positions.
Consider using the tray table for extra support. With a soft blanket or a pillow, you can turn it into a makeshift headrest, especially for shorter naps. Some travelers bring a travel footrest, a lightweight sling that hangs off the seat in front of you, allowing your legs to stay elevated and relaxed.
Relaxation techniques for better restEven with the perfect setup, falling asleep mid-flight can be challenging. This is where relaxation techniques come in handy:
Progressive muscle relaxation: starting from your toes, slowly tense and then relax each muscle group, working your way up your body. This technique calms your mind and reduces tension.Deep breathing exercises: a few minutes of deep, mindful breathing can help you settle into a more relaxed state.Use aromatherapy oils: scents like lavender or chamomile can help cue your brain to relax. Just rub a small amount on your wrists or behind your ears.Overcoming common disruptionsTravel is unpredictable and even the best preparations cant prevent every disruption. Noise, turbulence and other passengers can throw off your sleep rhythm.
To deal with these disruptions, listen to music or try earplugs to drown out loud passengers. If you feel anxious during turbulence, distract yourself by watching a calming movie or listening to an audiobook.
Jet lag and sleepManaging jet lag is a major concern for long-haul travelers. While theres no perfect solution, you can minimize its effects by syncing your sleep with your destinations time zone. Adjust your watch as soon as you board the plane and try to eat, sleep, and stay awake according to the destinations local time.
Product recommendations
To boost your in-flight comfort, consider bringing along a few essentials in your travel kit:
Ergonomic travel pillow: look for a supportive, contoured design that cradles your neck comfortably, even in cramped spaces.Noise-canceling earbuds or headphones: these can effectively block out engine hum and cabin noise, making it easier to fall asleep and stay rested.Soft, comfortable earplugs: for a lightweight noise solution, earplugs are a simple way to reduce disturbances without the bulk of headphones.Light-blocking sleep mask: choose a mask thats soft on the skin and fully blocks light to help you drift off, especially during overnight flights.Compression socks: these help improve circulation and reduce swelling, keeping you more comfortable on long-haul flights. These items add an extra layer of comfort to your journey, helping you arrive at your destination rested and ready to explore.
Arrival: refreshed and ready for adventureAfter a successful flight, theres nothing like the feeling of stepping off the plane and into the vibrancy of your destination. Whether it’s the bright lights of a bustling city, the serene beauty of nature or the excitement of a new culture to explore, your trip begins the moment you land. Hopefully, with these tips, youll arrive energized and ready to make the most of every moment. Travel may have its discomforts, but the thrill of arriving somewhere new far outweighs them.
