8 Vacation Photo Tips to Add Magic to Your Brand Story Online

To amplify your vacation story, enjoy these eight fun photo tips that are based on our marketing book, 8-Second PR: Energize Your Story for Ultimate Media Success! Whether you are in Bali, Indonesia, or our hometown of Baltimore, Maryland, these examples will show you how to add magic to your photo to capture their attention in 8 seconds (average attention span of an adult).
And whether you like it or not, social media has now made everyone CEO of their own personal brand. Your photos are your message to the world, and can make a huge first impression on anyone scanning your profile, looking to hire you, and/or considering to buy your product or service.
1. Use Shadows and Positioning – Photo in Badwater Basin, Death Valley, California – Have fun magnifying your photo with shadows that can add more depth to the image. You can also see that this picture has the subject positioned slightly to the left. Always try to avoid taking photos with the subject in the center, unless there is no other option.2. Include Animals – Photo at Bali Safari and Marine Park, Indonesia – Everyone loves photos with animals, which get the second most likes and comments, according to Hopper HQ. This photo of two giraffes is also strong because you can see their eyes and it’s an action photo. And if you’re not near a safari park, try posting photos of your favorite dogs or cats to increase engagement.
3. Take Close Ups of Food with a Story – Photo at Ubud, Bali, Coffee and Tea Tasting, Indonesia – Food photos also receive more likes than most images. Capture snapshots of food that tells a story about your trip. For example, this photo is at a tea tasting in Ubud, Bali, where we were fortunate to have yummy coconut and fried bananas for lunch overlooking a rice field.
4. Add Action to Your Photo Story – Photo in Lake Elsinore, California – Because we are all overloaded when scanning through images on Instagram, add action to your photos to make people look twice. This fun snapshot of Photographer Joyce Chow was taken during the recent 2019 Superbloom in a Southern California poppy field.
5. Use Different Angles – Photo in Napa Valley, California – Get creative with your photos by trying different angels. Get down on the ground, point the camera angle down on a landscape or subject, and/or use the Macro or Pan settings on the camera. This picture of vineyard grapes also has the main subject on the right, which is always better for the composition.
6. Take Surprising Expressions – Baltimore, Maryland, Family Reunion – Take photos with an unexpected expression of people to draw your audience’s attention. This action photo at a family reunion just north of Baltimore is a magic moment that made many people smile.
7. Take Photos of Landmarks with Personality – Photo in Park City, Utah – Look for landmarks that are decorated to give your photo more personality. For example, this historic barn is on the main road into Park City, Utah, and is a welcoming sign to many who visit. During this drive-by, it had an American flag for the 4thof July holiday. Notice that the barn is also off to the side, which opens up the photo more.
8. Capture Powerful Sunrise and Sunset Images – Photo in Bali at the Komune Resort and Beach Club, Indonesia – When taking photos of a sunrise or sunset, it’s important to look at different elements in your composition. A photo with people and texture is much more powerful than flat water. In this case, we set the alarm for 5:00am to capture this orange sunrise in Bali. Fortunately, both surfers and waves were perfectly positioned. Silhouettes and curves also added to the depth.
On top of all of these vacation photo tips, make sure you have good lighting. While you can always go back and edit photos later with filters, apps and photoshop, it is always best to get it right the first time. If the lighting is bad, try moving to different angles, use a flash and/or use colors to make your image pop more. And if you can wait, come back the next day when the sun is in a better place for the best results.
And the BIG SECRET that many professional photographers will agree upon is that you need to take about 100 photos to get five great photos. We learned this approach during a photography class at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C., and it’s truly how we got these great photos.
The last photography tip that we want to share is that you always want to take photos with both a high quality camera and a smartphone on your trips. Trust me, you don’t want to learn this tip the hard way. After losing important photos from Bali and the Sundance Film Festival due to camera and iPhone malfunctions, we were so grateful to have the backups.
So enjoy taking and posting your priceless vacation photos. And for more photography and video marketing tips for amplifying your brand story, read our 8-Second PR book and/or take our online courses on Teachable that include case studies examples for how to break through all the noise online. Chapter 2 is all about digital marketing strategy and story tips to help you post great content, get more likes and comments online and add magic to your personal brand. And if you have any questions, tweet us @LizHKelly. You can do this!

JUDY CHICAGO
Judy Chicago is an artist, author of fourteen books, educator, and humanist whose work and life are models for an enlarged definition of art, an expanded role for the artist, and women’s rights to freedom of expression. Chicago is most well-known for her role in creating a Feminist art and art education program in California during the early 1970’s, and for her monumental work The Dinner Party, executed between 1974 – 1979, which is the centerpiece of the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum in New York. Over the subsequent decades, Chicago has approached a variety of subjects in a range of media, including the Birth Project, PowerPlay, the Holocaust Project: From Darkness into Light, Resolutions: A Stitch in Time. Most recently she completed The End: A Meditation on Death and Extinction, which will be premiered at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Fall 2019, shortly after the publication of a major monograph. Chicago’s work has been exhibited widely in the United States and internationally. Her continued influence has been increasingly acknowledged; as recently evidenced by her inclusion in Time Magazine’s list of the “100 Most Influential People” in 2018.

Her work is in the collections of the British Museum, Moderna Museet (Stockholm), Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), National Gallery (Washington DC), Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, Hammer Museum, Getty Trust and Getty Research Institute, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Tate Modern, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Art Institute of Chicago, and over 25 university art museums such as Brandeis, Cornell, Harvard, Illinois, Michigan, UCLA, Canterbury (New Zealand) and Cambridge (UK).

90210 Reboot: Are You Watching Tonight?

I was so excited to go to the premier of the 2019 version of 90210 with She Media at Shutters on the Beach on August 7, 2019. I have to agree with what other fans said: It was very confusing! I am going to watch the next episode tonight in hopes it starts to make sense but it is not clear if they are playing themselves or enhanced versions of themselves or what is happening. I wish Luke Perry was alive to be a part of it.

As seen in Good Housekeeping:
“Wow! Way to disappoint all your fans! #90210 whose bright idea was it having the actors NOT play their character?!” –@joannazaneta
“Dear @FOXTV, You really messed up this 90210 reboot. Nobody cares about their real lives. We can google that.” – @lanier_RN
“This 90210 reboot format is terrible! What a horrendous concept. I’m 6 minutes in, and already want to turn it off. What a major letdown!” – @squire31

Tori Spelling says her dad would be proud: “Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth are confident that Beverly Hills, 90210 producer — and Tori’s dad — Aaron Spelling would approve of the quasi-revival, BH90210. Spelling says: “I think he would be super proud. First of all, he’d be really proud that Jennie and I did this, that we went on this journey and it was no easy journey. It took us two years to get this whole thing put together. But I think he would get it. I feel really confident that we have created something groundbreaking and that’s what he loved to do and he loved storytelling and entertaining and that’s what we do.”

After the premier, fans took to Twitter and said:
“This 90210 show is one of the most confusing things I’ve ever watched.” – @tomkeels
“Raise your hand if you would rather have watched re-runs of 90210 instead of the confusing mess that was aired tonight

LA Press Club Screening: This Changes Everything by Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media

The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media is a partner in the new documentary: “This Changes Everything,” about how everything has not changed. “It paints an impressively full picture of how Hollywood’s gender imbalance is sustained and also how it reverberates throughout the culture.”

Thank you to the Los Angeles Press Club for the screening and panel discussion.
This Changes Everything PROGRAM from Los Angeles Press Club on Vimeo.
“The new documentary film, This Changes Everything, about the struggles women face in the film industry, is the subject of a great panel discussion. Panelists include: Geena Davis, Catherine Hardwicke, Kimberly Peirce and the film’s director Tom Donahue. Moderated by Devra Maza.”

More from THE GEENA DAVIS INSTITUTE ON GENDER and MEDIA:
If women and girls don’t see themselves on screen as STEM professionals, they’re less likely to pursue those career paths.”-Geena Davis
In the U.S., only 24% of professionals in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) are women. Increasing media depictions of women in STEM encourages more girls and women to pursue STEM jobs in the real world. You hold the key to inspiring future visionaries and innovators.

MAJOR FINDINGS

The purpose of this study is to establish benchmark measures for the percentage of protagonists who are women, people of color, LGBTQIA, and people with disabilities in family films, so that we can quantify progress over time.
Male leads outnumber female leads
TWO-TO-ONE
although this has improved slightly in the last decade
Family films with female leads closed the gap in domestic box office revenue over the past decade and now earn more than family films with male leads
When it comes to race, white leads outnumber leads of color
FOUR-TO-ONE
Box office revenue for family films with leads of color and racially diverse co-leading casts have caught up with and surpassed family films with white leads
FEWER THAN 1%
of family films feature a LGBTQIA lead, and we have seen no progress in the past decade
FEWER THAN 1%
of family films feature a lead with a disability, and this has not improved in the past decade
WOMEN LEADS
Women constitute 51% of the U.S. population, but most family films tell the stories of men’s lives:
Male leads vastly outnumber female leads—71.3% compared to 28.8%. This means that men’s stories were featured twice as often as women’s stories.
Female leads are the least represented in the action (9.4%), adventure (23.6%), and comedy (28.7%) genres. However, women are equitably represented in horror (55.9%) and romance (46.3%) films.
We see fluctuations in women’s representation from 2007 to 2017, but the trend is upward, meaning that more women were cast in leading roles by the end of the decade than the start of the decade. In 2007, 23.8% of leads were women compared to 30.1% in 2017, with a high of 33.3% in 2016 (Chart 1).
Previous studies find that women represent half of the film-going population, and that gender diversity on screen translates into higher revenues at the box office. We find that the gender diversity bonus at the box office is a relatively recent phenomenon:
The amount of money female-led films make has increased over the last decade. In 2007, female-led films grossed an average of $44.3 million, and in 2017, they grossed an average of $80.1 million (Chart 2).
Family films with female leads caught up with and surpassed films with male leads in the past decade. A decade ago, family films with male leads earned significantly more revenue than films with female leads, but this reversed by 2016 when female leads grossed $94.3 million compared to $88.0 million for male leads. In 2017, female leads surpassed male leads again— $80.1 million compared to $78.4 million.
We recommend the following actions to move the needle on lead representations:
• Diversify hiring in film production. Diversity in writing rooms and throughout the creative process translates into more diversity on the screen, so the problem with representation starts with inequitable hiring decisions. Hiring practices in the film industry have seen no improvement in the last two decades. Studios must truly commit to anti-discrimination in their hiring practices, and set goals to diversify their workforce.
• Commit distribution and marketing resources equally. Another foundational problem with representation on the screen is that films directed by women do not receive the same distribution and marketing resources as films directed by men. Despite this, films written, directed, or starring women enjoy a greater average return on investment. Studios must commit to making more family films about the lives of women, people of color, LGBTQIA individuals, and people with disabilities, and ensure that these films reach the widest audience possible by equitably promoting them.
• Tell stories that reflect the real world. Studios could make the representations in family films equitable overnight by making sure that the worlds they are re-creating in family films look like the real world in terms of whose stories are told. Is it especially important to have diversity with leading characters since plotlines and narratives revolve around their stories.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on previous research coupled with our findings, we propose the following interventions to increase the participation of girls and women in STEM majors and careers:
Improve media representations of STEM characters when it comes to gender and race. This study demonstrates that media is influential in shaping attitudes toward STEM, but content producers continue to disproportionately represent STEM characters as white men, especially leading characters. Special attention should be paid to increase the representation of women and people of color as STEM characters, and to improve the ways women STEM characters are portrayed.
Cultivate girls’ interest in math and science from an early age through media role models, parents, educators, and mentors. Having supportive mentors, teachers, friends, and family members improves girls’ interest in and intention to pursue STEM.
Implement early childhood interventions to combat stereotypes about science as a pursuit for men, and cultural misperceptions that girls and women have a lower aptitude for STEM.
Retain women in STEM through equitable hiring, pay, and promotion practices, and by addressing workplace bias (gender discrimination and sexual harassment) as well as implementing flexible work-family policies.
