We promised a sneak peek, so here goes . . .

Author Ryan Jo Summers gives an excerpt of her short story, Tamed By Christmas!

“Do you think we can still find a room or a cabin this late? I think I’d prefer going somewhere in Colorado. Aspen or Denver maybe.”

His face lit up as a smile touched his eyes. Gripping her hand, he squeezed gently. “I’ll check as soon as we get home. There’s bound to still be something.”

She pulled back. “Shane, I have to share something first, to be totally honest with you.”

“Uh oh.” He released her hand and leaned back, crossing one leg over the other, waiting. Again, his expression caused her heart to skip a couple beats. That baleful look he did so well.

She fiddled with her coat hem, trying to find the right words.

“Just try what comes to mind, Paige. It’s bound to be the most accurate.”

She drew in a breath, laced with cold air. “Sometimes I feel like we’re only lying to each other.”

His brows arched in twin peaks of surprise. “Excuse me?”

“I mean that our relationship is based on those lies. Like all we can do right is make love and there’s nothing solid beyond that.”

He shook his head. “I’m not following you.”

She fiddled with the hem again until he stopped her, resting his hand over hers. She wondered how he could feel so warm when she was so cold inside.

“Not actual verbal lies, I mean more to ourselves in thinking we even have a real relationship, beyond the sex.”

“Ah, I got you now.” He nodded, withdrawing his hand, leaving her even colder. His baleful look deepened, causing a chill to slide up Paige’s spine.

“Sometimes I feel as though there’s this wall between us. It’s real big. And I try but can’t figure out how to get over that wall.”

Her heart plummeted and she gave a mirthless laugh. “Lies and walls.” She held his gaze for a moment, licking her lips. “Are we really just kidding ourselves here, Shane?”

I’m all about keeping it simple and festive around the holidays.

Simply buy a bottle of pre-made Appletini (I found mine at            T.J.Maxx.)
Then, mix one part green apple mix with one part vodka in a cocktail shaker with ice.
Pour into a pretty martini glass and adorn the green concoction with a red maraschino cherry!

Holiday Memory CornerHoliday Memory Corner

My writing career began when my husband gifted me a Kindle for Christmas. I rediscovered my love of all things romance and decided to try my hand at writing a romance novel. So, I checked out some books from the library, signed up for some online classes, and began my manuscript for Protecting Rose. It took a year to write and edit my first novel. In 2011, Protecting Rose finaled in the Launching a Star contest. This gave me enough courage to send it out to three publishers. I received two offers, and signed with Soul Mate Publishing.

Protecting Rose went on to win the 2012 Gayle Wilson Award of Excellence. How fun is that!! Today I have eight books out, as well as a few boxed sets and short stories, including my short story for Sizzle in The Snow, Christmas Eve Surprise. I’ve continued to garner awards, and my latest novel, The Notary, hit number 4 in the romantic suspense category on Amazon and I rode the top-100 best-selling author list for two weeks in that category. It was an amazing feeling that I hope to repeat someday.

I just wrote “the end” on my latest book, Between Midnight And Dawn, which is due for release in early 2016. I have two other stories in the works, the third in my Hero Series, as well as a paranormal series in a writing collaboration with my BFF, Char Chaffin, under the pen-name of CiCi Cordelia. Our first co-authored short-story under this name, Sweet Equation, is due for release in January, 2016, in the anthology, Hot Encounters II. It changed my world.

So, lots of stuff going on. And I owe it all to love, and my husband’s wonderful Christmas gift.Holiday memory

Company coming over? Author Crystal Firsdon dishes up her favorite holiday recipe:

Holiday recipe

Easy and simple, that’s me. I stole this recipe (though it’s so simple I’m not sure recipe is the right word) from my mom. Whenever it’s made, everyone loves it and there’s never any left!

Ingredients:

1 container of peppermint ice cream

1 pre-made chocolate graham cracker pie crust

Directions:

Take ice cream out of freezer and soften at room temperature for about 30 minutes. It should be easy to stir and smooth with a regular spoon.
Scoop ice cream into graham cracker pie crust and smooth out to completely fill the pie crust. I usually put enough ice cream so that it’s ¼ to ½ inch high from the pie crust.
Cover and put back into the freezer to refreeze, at least 45 minutes.
Cut like a regular pie and enjoy!

Christmas Decor

Christmas is my favorite holiday of the year when I tromp downstairs and haul out boxes of Christmas decorations stacked in bins in the storage room. I love the ritual of carting boxes upstairs and unloading all the objects I’ve accumulated. Strings of lights, garlands, homemade ornaments and life-sized Victorian Santa’s that have seen better days come out of their dusty wraps and find their spot in the house.

I begin by setting up a Christmas scene on the fireplace mantel, using hand-painted wooden Santa figures that I crafted in the days before I had children. I place a sleigh and wooden trees on the hall table and string garland from the banister and around the front door. My trio of spindly pine trees are arranged in a corner by a window. Christmas lights create a wonderful mood, softening everything and when the snow comes, the house lights up in a soft, white glow.

No matter the layout or size of your home, Christmas ambience can be created with surprisingly few items:

lights (strings can be placed along mantels, banisters, counters, and around windows)
greenery (either fresh or bought, garlands herald the old days and bring a rustic warmth to your home )
groupings (placing similar objects together such as pine cones, Santa’s or angels, Christmas ball ornaments and so on.
candles (cinnamon, cranberry, apples and vanilla are great scents that remind people of Christmas)

Enjoy decorating, even if your kids are grown. Arrange a night with a group of friends, mix drinks and get creative with a variety of crafts that everyone can bring supplies for. Trust me, as the evening unfolds, the crafts become highly entertaining!

Friday Feature Tracey Clark Shocking Finds

Friday Feature
Talks with
Tracey Clark
Author of
Shocking Finds

Today Tracey shares with us about her life, her love of words, and Kentucky. A random commenter will be picked to win an E-book copy of Shocking Finds. So let’s find out about Tracey and her book. Take it away Tracey:

I love words, and always enjoyed word-of-the-day as a child. But the idea to take my love of words and create worlds and characters didn’t hit me until after I was diagnosed with MS. I mean, I loved words but I also loved numbers, and what type of writer would I be when I had a slight case of dyslexia. Hmm. According to Momma Rae, I could and should do anything I wanted. Okay… I can and will win the lottery (probably not what she meant) but first I decided to take all my ideas and turn my words into a story. Now my first novel, Shocking Finds: A Finder’s Keepers Novel, is out and ready for readers to enjoy. Truly, I have been spontaneously squealing for the last month or two.

Words have become a ‘life tool’ for me. MS can take a lot from you, but it left me my ability to dream. When I could nothing else, I was still able to dream of worlds and people, of stories… In a way, MS forced me to switch tracks, to create Shocking Finds… and Shocking Finds saved my sanity when bed rest was the height of my entertainment. Words gave my life meaning.

Writing Shocking Finds came with ease, but editing … not so much. At first I hated even the mention of more edits, but then I got into it. I found a book called ‘The Emotion Thesaurus’ and that helped to make my edits fun. This book, and others by the same person, helped me to show my characters actions and feelings, instead of just telling the reader what was going on. To help with edits that had to do with the surrounding area, I looked for antique-for-sale sights. The guy that my MC, Marin, works for loves old and expensive décor. And wow, I am good with hand me down couches, the prices were so high.

I also learned that Kentucky has the largest number of cave systems in the United States. Growing up in a family of campers, I went to Carter Caves and explored around Grayson Lake as a child, so I knew there were a lot of caves to find. Apparently, the limestone rocks make this area ideal for cave systems. I didn’t have room for a cave scene in this novel but I now have a few scenes for bad guy hide outs in future novels. Anyone that has been caving knows that it can be a different world down there, and that is what I am building with my words. A different world for others to enjoy.

I think Marin, my female MC, enjoy living in Ky as much as I do. Though she has a coffee addiction, were I can’t stand the stuff. Writers always talk about needing more coffee, but the closest I come is a French Vanilla Coffee from the gas station, sugar-free of course. And that tastes like dessert to me, with little to no bitterness. Marin, on the other hand, would be happy with a coffee IV to supplement the time she needed to sleep, and couldn’t suck down her favorite fix. If I have anything that could compare, it would be Diet Coke out of the fountain at the gas station. I even refer to the guy that works there as my Coke Dealer. Something that at first embarrassed him (okay that was my goal. I had turned to a costumer he was chatting with, and informed him “This is my Coke Dealer, always keeps me supplied.”) Now everyone working there comments on my addictions.

But it is a much needed addiction. One that helped me to continue writing when I lacked energy. Okay, enough about me. Here is some more about Shocking Finds:

Blurb

An act of rebellion, Marin doesn’t think that running into the new store in town will hurt anything. Her aunt will never know… right? One car wreck later, her aunt is hospitalized, Marin is forced to spend her twenty-first birthday fighting for her life, and magic – the very thing her aunt has always sworn to be for fools – is real. And so is the irresistible Fae dedicated to Marin’s protection.

Kyland has searched Earth-side and all the other realms, looking for a missing Fae child. A child his Queen prophesied would be able to one day save the Fae people from the Danshue, as the evil Fae threat tries to overwhelm the entire Supernatural Community. A child that would know nothing of her blocked gifts, or her Fae heritage waiting to be claimed. A child that has grown into a curvy, delicious morsel he would love to taste

Together Marin and Kyland will fight Fae assassins, overcome betrayals, and if they’re lucky … they will find the Danshue responsible for their plight. That’s if Marin doesn’t shock him to death with her erratic new gift, and her out of control emotions.

Excerpt20151007 Shocking Finds cover

Lindal jabbed her dainty finger at Marin, her words hissed with the pressure of contained rage. “Do you want to die like your mother? Do you enjoy making me worry and endangering your life like this?”

Marin lowered her head and whispered, “If magic isn’t real, then I should be safe enough. This is the only unscheduled stop I made.”

“Don’t back talk me, girl. Magic is for fools. And places like this are for those too weak to hold on to their money, those willing to purchase lies because they are unhappy with the imperfections they were born with. If your mother had stayed home, she would be alive. Instead, she was mugged in some back alley and left to bleed out with the trash.”

Marin flinched, yet yearned to hear more. It was the most Lindal had ever said about her mother, or the events that had led to her death. Taking a chance that her aunt would continue sharing, Marin asked, “Is there any way to be safe?” She wanted to ask more about her mother, but feared that Lindal would clam up if she pushed too directly.

“Listen and listen good. People, those freaks with meddling gifts, can see how weak you are. They are abominations, just like you, but they can and will plant thoughts inside your mind, and lead you into danger. Everyone has enhanced senses these days, but you are an oddity. Abnormal, just begging for some fool to believe he can steal your curse, and use it for his own plans, by taking your life. The crap sold in places like this will not give you a shield from the evil in this world.” Lindal had explained many times over the years that Marin had been born without the natural shield that protected a person’s mind.

“But if there are people that can play tricks, put thoughts in your mind, then maybe there could be some small magic that’s real.”

Placing the bag with her new crystal protectively behind her back, Marin fought not to back away from her aunt. The look in Lindal’s eyes told her plainly that she had pushed too far. Any sign of weakness would light a match to these attacks. “Tricks. Nothing but tricks. Your mind is just too weak to figure them out.”

Bio20151106-Tracy-Clark

With the middle name Loquacious (okay, it’s really Lee) I will do my best to keep this bio short. My name is Tracey L Clark, and I write paranormal romance. I am surrounded by all things Kentucky: a love of horses and caves, a few dogs for best friends, and a taste for bourbon. Mostly, I love soaking up the changing colors to be found in a Kentucky fall season.

I started writing to keep my mind busy when I was hit with MS (multiple sclerosis), and now I have my first novel out for others to enjoy. My Mother is my strength, and my number one fan. The best part about Kentucky are the mommas, like mine, that are willing to bend over backwards to see their babies happy.

I grew up by people of Irish and Cherokee backgrounds, but mostly I grew up surrounded by those that loved to create. Even my mother (who will tell you she has no talent) designed our deck, and it was magnificent. Cooking grandmothers (seven of them), a poetry loving grandfather and one that built so many houses that the street bares our last name, and a grandmother that could draw or paint anything. My love of art definitely came from my family, but I believe that I am the first to take on a 100,000 word novel. And I loved every minute. (okay, maybe I didn’t love the edits, but that was because there are so many)

Genre: Historical Romance

Heat Level: Sensual20151105 BuccaneerBeauty

BUCCANEER BEAUTY is the story of Grace, Graínne, O’Malley, the beautiful daughter of a powerful Irish chieftain and a conventional mother. At the age of eleven, Graínne cuts her hair and sneaks aboard her father’s galley ship, determined to follow a life at sea and to seek the company of a handsome Scottish gallowglass, Bruce Donnel. Graínne proves herself a budding warrior when Spanish marauders invade her father’s vessel, but her parents have other plans for her. Though she proves an able sailor, Graínne is forced to marry Donal O’Flaherty, another powerful chieftain. Though enamored of Bruce Donnel, she nonetheless obeys her parents and proves an able helpmate to her violent and rash husband, continuing her own adventures at sea while raising children and supervising her husband’s home. Her heart, however, still belongs to a handsome Scot who she can never have.

Upon Donal’s death by ambush, Graínne continues her adventures along the Irish coast and Europe, secretly battling England’s growing power in her country. Alternately sleeping with the devil or manipulating the British authorities to her own ends, Graínne is determined to save her family and people from the tyranny imposed upon them by England. To make her family stronger, she weds Richard Bourke, one of the most powerful men in the region, but she can never forget Bruce Donnel and the passion he incited within her soul. Richard proves Graínne’s most stalwart supporter and she his, their minds and bodies uniting in an almost mystical union. Together, they faced the English with no fear—with only audacity and boundless courage. Still, the shadow of a youthful gallowglass intrudes on Graínne’s peace.

Excerpt:

“I wish you could come with me to Bunowen.” Grainne heard Bruce’s footsteps when he stepped on the hay spread along the barn. She looked up from grooming her chestnut horse.

“Now what would I be doing there?” Bruce ambled toward her and began stroking the mare’s nose. The horse stomped on the ground with her right front hoof and let out a fierce snort. The Scot took a step back.

“She thinks you mean to dishonor me.” Grainne grinned at him as she combed the horse’s mane. “My da gave her to me after that first voyage. Before that, I’d only had a pony. He said I could handle Anu after that.”

Bruce had regained his courage. He searched within the folds of his cloak and offered the horse a carrot. Anu gazed at him with what looked like suspicion, sniffing the tempting vegetable. “She’s a wild one.”

Grainne laughed and threw her arms around the animal’s long neck. “She’s a smart one, you’re meaning.” She stared at the now fully-grown man before her. His fair hair fell lightly onto his shoulders, and he wore the tartan trews typical of his people. She glanced at the way his muscular legs bulged within the tight material of his tartan trews. He’d spent most of his life yielding an axe, and Grainne didn’t want to admit to herself how lonely the months were when he returned to his native land with the rest of his men. “How old are you now, Bruce Donnel?”

Bruce watched as Anu took a generous bite from the carrot, then he lifted it to his own lips, grinning. “Older than you, Lady Grainne.” He studied her for a few minutes. “Twenty.”

“So no Highland Lass has won your heart, has she?” Grainne swept the coarse mane from the comb and tossed it aside. She wiped her hands on her trews and pushed a stray strand of hair from her face.

“No, my heart’s been stolen by an Irish goddess, but I can’t have her.” He turned to the pawing horse and shared the rest of his carrot.

Grainne’s heart hammered inside her breast. She took a deep breath and forced levity into her voice. “Who is she, pray tell?”

Bruce was suddenly so close to her that she could feel his hot breath feathering the slight hairs on her neck. “Don’t play with me, Grainne. It hurts too much.”

Grainne swallowed hard as her very being lurched with desire and aching need. Every sinew in her body wanted to wrap him within the all-consuming fire of her passion. She forced a laugh into her voice. “What hurts? By what I hear aboard ship you waste no time pining for the chieftain’s daughter. You’re quite the man about port. Many a Spanish and French lass can attest to that.”

“They mean nothing.” His fingertips lightly touched a strand of her hair, but he jerked away as if an electric jolt raced through his body. He added bitterly, “But you’re the daughter of one of the most powerful men in Connaught, and you’re soon to be the wife of another. I’m a poor mercenary.”

“Not so poor by what I’ve heard.” Grainne struggled to control her own rapid breathing. The heat of his body infiltrated her very pores. “Rumor has it you’ve farmland in the Highlands.”

Bruce’s face was very close to hers as he moved closer to her, his breath fanning against her lips as they lightly touched hers. Grainne involuntarily touched his cheek, her fingertips on fire and her own breathing sounding loud in her ears. “You’ve heard right. It would be a great place to raise sheep, if I had the right woman.”

“Aye. It would be in a place with the right woman.”

Grainne looked away, but she still felt his heat. He cupped her chin under with his thumb and forefinger, forcing her to look at him. His brown eyes bore into her soul. Grainne’s whole body grew hot, and she gently slapped away his hand. Turning from him, she replied softly over her shoulder, “I have to finish with Anu.”

“Would you leave with me, my wild rose?” Suddenly, Bruce’s powerful arms encircled her waist. He ran his lips along her neck as his hands shifted to her breasts.

Grainne turned to him, almost against her as though she couldn’t help her conscious will. In his arms, she wasn’t possessed of a mind at all, only an aching body that longed for sexual release. During her long journeys at sea, Grainne had acquired many unsavory sailors’ habits. She loved to game and swore in such a way that made her mother cross herself before flailing her only daughter, but Grainne had never given of herself to man. She’d purposefully withheld her sexual favors from the men inhabiting her father’s ships. Grainne was a chieftain’s daughter. She wouldn’t disgrace him or herself.

Paragraphs seem to be an issue in my world lately, at least I’ve run into a number of issues with friends and paragraphs, so that made me start thinking about them…hence….a blog ;).

First thing to keep in mind is that paragraphs are . . .

Lily wants to solve her own problems. Why won’t she let Richard do his duty? He’ll chase her to hell and back if he has to.

Book Blurb

If women were as easily managed as the affairs of state—or the recalcitrant Ottoman Empire—Richard Hayden, Marquess of Glenaire, would be a happier man. As it was the creatures—one woman in particular—made hash of his well-laid plans and bedeviled him on all sides.

Lily Thornton came home from Saint Petersburg in pursuit of marriage. She wants a husband and a partner, not an overbearing, managing man. She may be “the least likely candidate to be Marchioness of Glenaire,” but her problems are her own to fix, even if those problems include both a Russian villain and an interfering Ottoman official.

Given enough facts, Richard can fix anything. But protecting that impossible woman is proving to be almost as hard as protecting his heart, especially when Lily’s problems bring her dangerously close to an Ottoman revolution. As Lily’s personal problems entangle with Richard’s professional ones, and she pits her will against his, he chases her across the pirate-infested Mediterranean. Will she discover surrender isn’t defeat? It might even have its own sweet reward.20150923 DANGEROUS WEAKNESS2 (5)

Excerpt

“Who invited Lilias Thornton?” Richard demanded under his breath. His eyes followed a slender young woman who paced out the steps of the Quadrille across the parquet floor of the earl’s ballroom.

“No ‘thank you for turning your country seat into a diplomatic snake pit for an entire week so the haut ton can mingle with exotic visitors from the East while the foreign secretary manages the fate of Greece over Brandy and cards?’” Will demanded.

Richard looked at his friend, one eyebrow raised. “Chadbourn Park fit the need precisely. I thanked your Catherine this morning.”

Will grunted. “My Catherine worked miracles when Sahin Pasha showed up with six extra people in his party.”

“We can’t predict how many retainers the Turks will impose,” Richard growled. The Ottomans danced to their own tune; the Foreign Office never knows what to expect. Richard loathed the unpredictable. He went back to surveying the overheated ballroom.

“Who invited Lilias Thornton?” he repeated while he moved along the mirrored wall of the earl’s spectacular ballroom to a position next to a massive marble urn that gave him a better view of his quarry. His eyes never left the dancers.

Will snatched two glasses of champagne from a footman stationed discreetly along the softly flocked wall, tray in hand. He handed one to Richard who took it without looking.

“Catherine also had to scurry when your mother demanded that she invite three more marriageable young ladies and their eager mamas,” Will complained.

“I would rather that she refused.”

“Refuse the Duchess of Sudbury? Surely you jest.”

Richard nodded without taking his gaze from the dancers. “I jest. I have less control over my mother than I do Sahin Pasha.” He loathed loss of control even more than unpredictability. He had been forced to sidestep the marriage-minded chits for two days.

Right now only one woman interested him, Lilias Thornton. He watched her throw her head back, send auburn curls bouncing, and laugh up at her partner. She dances with grace, I’ll give her that—grace and unbridled joy. A man could lose his senses over that look. The last thing he needed was to lose his senses.

Will followed his friend’s line of sight. “Beautiful woman,” he acknowledged. “Catherine called her dress ‘beyond perfection.’”

That dress radiates so damned much continental sophistication she makes the women around her look countrified, my esteemed mother’s protégées included. The woman laughed freely again, and Richard felt himself harden in spite of his determination; the surge of attraction irritated him. I have no time for such nonsense.

“Who invited her?” he demanded. “It’s a matter of some urgency.”

Will shrugged. “I believe Catherine included some regular attendees at your sister’s literary salon. She must be one of those. You said to invite women who could provide intelligent conversation to members of the diplomatic corps.”

“So I did. My men tell me she has been in conversation with Konstantin Volkov three times these past two days.”

“You’re tracking her conversations?”

“Volkov’s. He has no official role, yet he follows the Russian delegation and slinks through society in the shadows. I want to know who he works for, why he sought an invitation, and what he intends.”

The entire house party had been arranged to provide a discreet opportunity for the foreign secretary—or more precisely, Richard, his second—to persuade Ottoman officials to moderate their suppression of revolutionary rumbling in Greece. England did not want the kind of chaos that would tempt Russia. Expansionist Russia threatened all of Europe. The weak and floundering Ottoman Empire did not.

“Ask him,” Will suggested. “Unless diplomacy requires a more devious approach.”

“Lilias Thornton accompanied her father to St. Petersburg three years ago. The crown appointed him to the trade delegation at our embassy there,” Richard explained. “She returned without him rather abruptly in early January. I wonder why. Volkov arrived shortly after. It puzzles me.” He did not like puzzles.

“It isn’t unusual for a young woman of marriageable age to seek London before the Season starts,” a woman’s voice cut in. Catherine Landrum, Will’s countess, reached for her husband’s glass and took a sip. She tasted it slowly, seemed to pronounce it fit, and handed the glass back. “Lilias made it clear she’s seeking a good marriage,” the countess told Richard. “Who is Volkov?”

“She’s well beyond the age,” he answered. He ignored her question about the Russian.

“Surely not!” Catherine laughed. “Twenty-two may be somewhat older than the norm . . .” She paused when a young woman of seventeen pranced by and smiled coyly at the marquess over her partner’s shoulder.

“Well, perhaps quite a bit older,” she acknowledged when they passed.

“She served as her father’s hostess in his postings abroad since she turned sixteen. She has shown no interest in the marriage mart until this year,” Richard said. “I don’t care about the gossip. I want to know about her connection to Konstantin Volkov.”

“Ask her,” the countess suggested.

“I intend to,” Richard said as the last notes of the dance faded. He set out in the woman’s direction.

Author bio20150923 Caroline Warfield

Caroline Warfield has at various times been an army brat, a librarian, a poet, a raiser of children, a nun, a bird watcher, an Internet and Web services manager, a conference speaker, an indexer, a tech writer, a genealogist, and, of course, a romantic. She has sailed through the English channel while it was still mined from WWII, stood on the walls of Troy, searched Scotland for the location of an entirely fictional castle (and found it), climbed the steps to the Parthenon, floated down the Thames from the Tower to Greenwich, shopped in the Ginza, lost herself in the Louvre, gone on a night safari at the Singapore zoo, walked in the Black Forest, and explored the underground cistern of Istanbul. By far the biggest adventure has been life-long marriage to a prince among men.

She sits in front of a keyboard at a desk surrounded by windows, looks out at the trees and imagines. Her greatest joy is when one of those imaginings comes to life on the page and in the imagination of her readers.

Son of the Moonless Night

 SON OF THE MOONLESS NIGHT_805x1275

GENRE: Urban fantasy, Paranormal, Romance

HEAT LEVEL: Sensual

Currently available in eBook on Amazon at: http://amzn.com/B00XK3E172

Owen Todd Jordan Riley has a secret. He’s a shape shifter who has been hunting and killing his own kind. To him the only good shifter is a dead shifter. Revenge for the death of a friend motivates him, and nothing stands in his way . . . except Katrina Romanovski, the woman he is falling in love with.

Deputy coroner Katrina Romanovski has a secret, too. She hunts and kills paranormal beings like Owen. At least she did. When she rescues Owen from an attack by a werebear she is thrust back into the world she thought she’d left. Determined to find out what Owen knows about the bear, she begins a relationship meant to collect information. What she gets is something quite different-love with a man she suspects of murder. Can she reconcile his deception and murderous revenge spree and find a way to redeem him? Or will she condemn him for the same things she has done and walk away from love?

Excerpt from Son of the Moonless Night:

A crash in the alley stopped Katrina Romanovski mid-stride. Like the October mist swirling in off the lake, her gypsy blood stirred sending her intuition into high gear. Something unnatural was happening.

Go see what’s wrong. She heard her father’s voice as clearly as if he stood next to her.

On the heels of his words came her mother’s pragmatic warning in clipped British tones. You know what curiosity killed. Katrina pushed the ever-present warning aside. Mom never approved of Dad’s supernatural hunts and even less of his drawing her into them.

Pulling the oversized cross she always wore out from under her shirt, Kat looked around for a weapon. Please, not a vampire. I hate vampires! A piece of wood sticking out of the trashcan at the front of the alley caught her eye.

Grabbing it, she broke the end off into a sharp point. The mist-filled air filtered the light from the single bulb over one of the alley doorways. The wind swirled the loose trash around making a quiet approach difficult. Sidestepping the paper, with the stake in one hand and holding the gun she took from her purse in the other hand, she crept into the alley.

A roar echoed against the buildings, the sound nearly sending her running. That roar wasn’t a vampire. It sounded more like an animal. Kat inched closer. In the yellow pool of light from the back door of the building, a black bear, over seven feet tall, reared on its back legs and swung its paw at the man standing at the edge of the light. He crashed to the ground, shirt torn open from the slashing claws. Blood covered the fabric, and he clasped his left hand over his shoulder to stem the flow. The bear bent toward him, teeth bared in a smile. A wicked smile.

Kat aimed her gun, but before she could pull the trigger, a shot rang out. The flash of gunpowder lit the face of the injured man. The blast reverberated against the buildings. With an enraged bellow, the bear staggered backward against the wall. Shaking his head, the animal dropped to all four paws. Weaving like a drunk, he lumbered toward his attacker. The man took aim again, shooting the animal between the eyes. Animal and human collapsed on the dirty, littered pavement.

As she started to move forward, Kat’s gypsy senses crawled over her skin like angry red ants. As she slipped back into the shadows, the bear shed fur. Changing size. Then, finally, turning into a man.

Shape shifters. Her stake wasn’t any good against them, and her bullets weren’t silver. This one appeared dead anyway. Had the wounded man seen the shift? Tossing the stake aside, she paused by the shifter and quickly moved to the wounded man. Out cold. Still human.

When she touched him, his eyelids fluttered open. “Did I get it?”

“What?”

“The bear.”

We promised a sneak peek, so here goes . . .

Author Kim Hotzon gives an excerpt of their short story,

The Snow Bird!

Standing beneath him, she caught a glimpse of his butt encased in his jeans. He wore a navy fleece jacket and a matching hat. Even dressed like this, it was evident Tony had a sculpted, God-like physique. Her pulse raced as she pictured him naked, reclining on a sheepskin rug in front of a roaring fireplace. Or wrapping a white towel around his waist as he came out of the shower . . .

Lauren was startled when Tony nearly stepped on her hand. She had been so lost in thought, she hadn’t realized he’d almost descended the ladder.

“You all right? No need to be concerned,” he said. “It’s a small job. I need to cut a piece of wood and fit it in across the hole.”

She hadn’t expected he would work so quickly. How to devise a way to keep him around longer? “I was about to make a pot of coffee . . . can I bring you a cup?”

Tony hesitated, tucking a lock of hair under his fuzzy hat. His brown eyes were liquid, kind and warm. “Sure.”

Holiday Memory CornerHoliday Memory Corner

Tina Susedik has a wonderful holiday memory to share . . .

All four of my grandparents came over from Germany after WWI, and, of course, spoke German as well as English. As my siblings and cousins grew up, we learned a few words of German.

One Christmas when my parents were particularly short of cash for gifts, my mother decided to teach my two older sisters and me to sing Silent Night in German. I was six, my two sisters 8 and 10. We sang in three part-harmony. This would have been 1958.

I remember standing in the doorway between my Grandma’s parlor and living room. We were surrounded by aunts, uncles, cousins (there were a lot of them), and my two sets of grandparents. My mom played the piano. The room was dead silent. Everyone stared at us. Then we started singing (OMG. I’m starting to tear up as I write this). When we finished, tears were running down the adults’ faces, but none more than my grandparents.

This became a tradition whenever we were at my grandparents’ farm for Christmas. One year I had a cold, developed laryngitis, and couldn’t sing. I cried and cried as Barb and Pat sang without me. We’d had this dream of becoming the next Lennon Sisters and I ruined it.

Music CornerMusic Corner

Listen up! Crystal Firsdon shares her favorite holiday song:

I’ve always liked my Christmas music rocked up, so I’m partial to Mannheim Steamroller. Here’s one of my Christmas favorites, Carol of the Bells.

Craft Corner Craft-corner

Feeling crafty? Ryan Jo Summers shares a festive DIY craft:

My DIY craft is felt snowmen. Super easy to make and fairly quick. They do not require lots of expensive items either. This would be a super project to work on with the kids.

Start with various sized bottles or jars. Mine all came from white bottles: supplements, OTC medicine, etc… Almost any round object would work. Also, white felt, black felt, orange felt. Amounts will be based on sizes of bottles and number of snowmen to be made. Lastly, glue. Elmer’s school style or hot glue are both fine.Felt snowmen part 1

First, glue white felt around the empty bottle or jar. Then glue black felt around the top for a hat. Length will depend on overall desired size of hat. To make the hat brim, cut a hole in the center of a black felt circle slightly larger than the bottle’s/ jar’s diameter. Pull over bottle/ jar and glue in place.

Lastly, add googly eyes, orange felt nose and cheeks. Tie ribbons (Christmas design or not) around hat and/or body. Use puffy paint to draw a mouth and outline the nose. If you have a tall enough snowman, glue some buttons under the mouth to indicate a torso.

Viola! All done!

Time to bring out the mistletoe! CD Hersh has some great decorating tips!

Decorate your Christmas Table

Catherine loves to set a pretty Christmas table, which she changes yearly. (She has a thing for dishes.) She also loves napkin rings, which are often expensive. To satisfy her dish decorating habit, she came up with a quick and easy way to brighten up her Christmas table using last year’s Christmas cards. You have them right? Doesn’t everyone?

Here’s what you need:

Christmas cards

Clear drinking glass (which will allow you to see the pattern on the Christmas card) or other circle template. A 2 ¼ to 2 ¾ diameter works best.

A marking pen or pencil

Scissors

Craft knife

Ribbons-cord or ¼ inch satin works best. Coordinate them to match your cards or go wild with colors.

Directions:

Position the glass or circle template on the Christmas card, choosing the part of the card you want to use as the base of the napkin ring.CDHersh-Decorate-2

Draw around the outside edge of the glass. Cut out the circle. With a craft knife cut two slots in the circle, spacing them about ¼ of the way from the edges of the circle. Thread a pretty ribbon, long enough to circle your napkins and tie a bow, through the slots. Slip the ribbon around your napkins, tie your bow, and you have a festive napkin ring for your holiday table. If you want to get even fancier, glue some lace or gathered ribbon to the back of the greeting card circle and cover it with another circle. Slit both front and back circles and slid the ribbon through. Tie the ring onto your napkin and enjoy.CDHersh-Decorate-3

Like this easy table decoration? You can adapt it using any themed greeting cards and have tailor made napkin rings for any occasion. If you add your guests’ names, the napkin rings double as name cards.

Holiday Card/Poem Cornerangel with basket

What’s a holiday without a personalized poem by one of your favorite authors? Author Beth Carter shares this delightful and heartfelt poem:

Christmas Tree Angel

By Beth Carter

Bejeweled with strands of pearls

Feathered birds and twinkling lights;

Glittering ornaments and velvet bows

Encircled our tree with delight.

Plump snowmen and toy soldiers

Carefully placed just right;

Shiny Red and Green Packages

Completed the joyful sight.

The most special gift of all

Topped our majestic tree;

A frayed, embroidered angel

Handmade by Mommy and me.

Friday Features Seduction of Cinema Rachel Sharpe

Friday Features
Welcomes
Rachel Sharpe

Today we have with us author Rachel Sharpe the writer of the Jordan James, PI Series. She is sharing some interesting highlights about the cinema that relates to her newest book Bitter Retribution.

However before she does I (Donald) want to take a moment to talk about this newest book of the series. Having read Bitter Retribution, the third book in the Jordon James PI series, I can say that the story fully reveals Jordon’s feelings about her boyfriend Rick, and investigative partner Jon. These are characters you can love to follow because they are believable in their faults and uncertainties. Just be sure to not start reading the book without enough time to finish before bed time. LOL You will not be able to put it down.

Now I’ll turn the post over to Rachel.

THE SEDUCTION OF CINEMA

Many people are drawn to the Hollywood lifestyle. Everything about southern California, from its glamorous attractions to outdoor activities, cause people to flock there. Many do so with the hopes of making it big – to become a star. While very few achieve this goal, it’s still a dream many are willing to take a chance on.

It’s hard to pinpoint the exact reason for Hollywood’s allure, but the closest conclusion I’ve come to is fantasy. In Hollywood, anything goes. Tinsel town is filled with fame and fortune, all there for the taking. Reality rarely makes an appearance when one can live in a multi-million dollar mansion, eat at five star restaurants daily, shop on Rodeo Drive, and get paid to perform.

I’ve visited California a few times and am fortunate enough to know some people who work in the movie industry. When you’re in Hollywood getting an insider’s view, it’s hard not to become swept up in the fantasy. When you live the life of a famous actor, it’s easy to become detached from the “real world.” And what better place to solve a crime than in a land where make believe is reality?

BITTER RETRIBUTION BLURB20151023 BitterRetribution400

“What started out as a star-studded vacation has turned into a sensational avalanche...

When private investigator Jordan James decided to join her best friend on the set of her hit television series in the Rocky Mountains, she had no idea she would become a key player in a murder mystery more suited for the big screen than the slopes. With one actor dead and a killer on the loose, can Jordan uncover the culprit before another victim makes headlines on Hollywood Minute?

BITTER RETRIBUTION EXCERPT

“Don’t let your tears flow,” she insisted passionately from the screen. I glanced up and saw Roch and Nikole embracing while the KGB closed in on them. Slowly, a crescendo of brass arose as Roch and Nikole fought gallantly to their deaths. The credits began and I glanced at the clock. It was ten.

“What garbage,” I laughed aloud, grinning at the thought of meeting Roch Turner the next afternoon. I turned off the television and stretched. Yawning, I walked into my bedroom. After doing one more double-check, I was satisfied I had not forgotten anything. I got ready for bed before climbing beneath my heavy, down comforter and closing my eyes. Sighing contentedly, I thought with excitement about seeing Heather for the first time in six months, skiing in the Rockies, and watching a hit sitcom being filmed. This is going to be the best Thanksgiving ever, I thought happily. pushing images of Rick from my mind.

As I succumbed to the tranquility of slumber, eagerly awaiting a much-needed vacation, I had no idea of the depth and complexity of the situation in which I would soon be enmeshed. I had no idea of the sheer magnitude of the vendetta in which I would find myself, a senseless dispute which began years before my own birth. If I had, I would have ripped my flight itinerary up into a million tiny pieces and stayed in the warm haven of my bed.

COLD AMBITIONCold Ambition

“It was my life-long dream to become a private eye. Little did I know that with my very first case, that dream would become a life-threatening nightmare…” When Jordan James decided to embark on a career as a private investigator, she never could have imagined that a chance encounter would lead to her staring down the barrel of a gun on the roof’s edge of a high-rise building. As she begins to investigate her first case, the puzzling murder of a prominent businessman that has left Boston’s finest mystified for more than two decades, she finds herself suddenly immersed in a treacherous underworld brimming with betrayal, raw greed, and political subterfuge of international proportions. In the midst of this, she discovers she is falling for her mysterious client despite the hints of his dark past. Can this feisty Southern girl with a penchant for trouble solve this baffling case or is she doomed to become another tragic chapter in an international conspiracy? “COLD AMBITION” Available Now on Amazon! http://www.amzn.com/B00L2OLQPG/

LOST DISTINCTION20141031 Lost Distinction 400

“It all started with a favor…” When private investigator Jordan James agreed to search for the missing son of a U.S. Ambassador, she didn’t realize she was walking into a case one hundred years in the making. The deeper she delves into this unusual assignment, the more shocking, and the more dangerous, it becomes. With time running out and lives at stake, Jordan must race to identify the culprit of an elaborate plot while also uncovering a far more personal truth too intimate to ignore… “LOST DISTINCTION” Available Now on Amazon! http://www.amzn.com/B00Q5OGCS4

Blurb:

Mike and Liz Keeny are newlyweds, new parents, and the proprietors of the Barrett Inn, an 1875 Victorian on Cape Cod, which just happens to be haunted. By their own ghosts. The Inn had become an annex of Purgatory, putting Mike, Liz, and their infant son in danger. Selling the historic seaside bed and breakfast was the only answer, one that Liz and her own tortured specter refused to consider. Were they doomed to follow the same path that led to disaster in their previous lives? Was getting out, getting away, enough?

Excerpt:

Look, for now, we’ll just stay where we are–together. If Liz and Mike are united, then Jared and Elisabeth aren’t going to be able to get in between us.” He brushed the tears off her cheeks.

She stared at him intently, fear, maybe desperation in her eyes. “We can only talk to each other about this. Others might use any information against us.”

“Who would do that, Liz?’

Her demeanor hardened. She sat up, raised her chin. “My son. Your daughter. Sandra.”

“You’re paranoid. The kids have no inkling about ghosts. All Sandra has are theories. She doesn’t know about your incident–or my illness. And I’m not going to tell her.” Guilt twanged in his gut. Sandra had come up with all the ghostly interpretations on her own, right?

Liz jumped up. “She knows about my injury. Maybe not how it happened, but when Mae went in there to get my things, she figured out it was for me. She reads minds, or manipulates people into blabbing what they know.”

Mike lowered his voice to a whisper. “It doesn’t take much for Mae to spill information. I think you’re giving Sandra too much credit.” Yet, she did ask him about the ghosts as soon as he sat down.

“You can joke all you want, Mike, but this is serious. We can’t let anyone else in.”

“I won’t say a word about anything ghostly to anyone. As long as things stay under control.”

Liz studied him.

Mike squirmed. “I think I’m going to take a nap.” He settled back on the sofa.

She tucked the blanket around him and kissed him on the cheek. “I’ll go help Mae with dinner.”

She didn’t believe him. He didn’t trust her. This was never going to work.
